Hope next month EOFY sale will see this go under $1k !!!

What a price! I enjoy a windows device but honestly struggle to see how you would buy any thing else with a price like this. The battery life and quiet operation are amazing

    • +8

This is exactly my struggle at the moment. My aging Windows laptop (X1 Carbon) needs a replacement and… for the first time, Apple's offering seems to the best price/value

      • +1

Move over to the dark side. You’ll never want to go back!

        • +7

Until you want to do something a little different and then you'll go…Grrr

But great for just office stuff. And unbeatable for image, video & audio manipulation (i.e. anything Adobe).

          • -2

            @M00Cow: Yep.
Went to use Renault software , windows only.

        • +5

I actually went the other way: I used to hate Windows, but a few years ago switched (for all different reasons), and turns out, Windows is really not bad these days.

I do some low level programming and GPU accelerated machine learning, and Windows WSL is so well supported… Windows is practically the best Linux you can use these days, not to mention it runs all my games :)

I have a few external devices that I'm not sure I could run on an Apple Silicon machine (CNC router native driver; USB oscilloscope driver; ESP32 drivers)

Having said all of that, I do miss the beautiful look of OSX and the seamless integration with my phone.

          • +2

            @glade90:

Windows is practically the best Linux you can use these days

            Wut.

          • +1

@glade90: Windows is the best, although their system of updates can be annoying now.

          • @glade90: I just bought a Lenovo P14S because of the particular CAD software I needed. I really really wanted an MBP though, and while most software has a Mac equivalent, or you can get it to work virtually, it’s a hassle, and latest versions of these particular CAD software only really works on windows (Siemens NX, Solidworks).

And here’s the thing with those specialised windows workstations is they are just as expensive as the MBP and have lower build quality and lower outright performance.

        • I swapped over as well (same reason - best value for a portable laptop with good battery life), and for the most part had a good experience. But the real killer for me is the window management (no snapping?? why) and the inconsistent shortcuts (different between apps for no reason). So I will go back for my next one. Wish I didn't need to though as hardware wise it's fantastic.

          • +4

@nigel deborah: Have you tried an app to snap windows? I'm using Magnet.

I've previously used Better Touch Tool, but didn't need any of the more advanced features.

          • +1

@nigel deborah: What shortcuts are inconsistent?

          • @nigel deborah: Buy bettertouchtool, it has windows snapping and you can customise and automate everything. Shame there is no equivalent software for Windows

      • This has been the best value since it came out

    • +3

honestly struggle to see how you would buy any thing else with a price like this.

I'm finding it hard to pull the trigger… This model is 3 years old.

      • +1

Just as good as current year model

        • That's besides the point. It's still a 3 year old device. It was unbeatable when it came out but now the competition has caught up in many areas.

          • +4

@ozbargain-pashim: The competitions that have caught are expensive.

            • +2

@Allaboutdiscounts: Very true actually. I guess that's why apple released the newer model at a higher price tag and kept selling this one, almost 3 years later, at the original price.

Windows laptop manufacturers are entirely to blame here and they deserve to have a portion of their pie eaten by apple for not innovating.

          • +3

@ozbargain-pashim: I don't think the competition has caught up. Which laptop has similar build quality and performance and efficiency on battery for near this price?

        • Really? How do you know that this is as good as the current year model?

BTW Apple's laptop support is like 8 years or so… So, this laptop will be supported for 5 years (or so).

          https://www.macworld.com/article/673939/this-is-how-long-mac…

I'm not an Apple hater (or even Apple lover)… Just want a good deal that will last long.

          • @ram4ram: This model will probably have good resale.

Any decent upgrade on this model in the Apple range takes you dangerously close to $2500.

    • +2

And the screen and quality aluminium construction.

    • +3

I have a decent PC build for photo + video editing with a 5900X and a 2080, but I recently got a 14" M1 Pro Macbook for just over $2K for mobile use and it's every bit as quick except for the real meaty 3D or GPU intensive stuff and obviously can't game on it. I have always despised Apple but the M1/M2 chips are insane. Not to mention on the Pro models the screen is phenomenal, unbeatable value.

  • +1

My current 2012 macbook pro with only 8gb ram struggle like hell with Chrome (which I need the extensions which not available on Safari), will this air same with 8gb ends up same problem with Chrome? Otherwise everything else runs fine on it, then no point to upgrade …

    • -2

Ever tried to like… Google for it?
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQUm_D6R0nQ

    • -2

Overall yes, 8GB RAM would not be a pleasant experience with Chrome on any platform. Faster SSD for swap may help a bit but would wear down the small 256GB SSD.

The last Chrome update had an interesting feature - it would keep in RAM only a few recent tabs and unload everything else - this helps to keep the RAM usage much lower and makes it practical for such machines but some state of the opened tabs may be lost (it would reload the page when you switch to the tab).

    • +6

Ditch chrome-it has always been crap on Macs, and will never be fixed!

      • try brave instead- uses chrome extensions

        • +2

          Vivaldi or even Edge.

    • +1

Depending how many tabs you keep open. Like, tens vs hundreds. But you'll be much better off with this new machine.

Note that your macbook struggles mainly because it's 11 years old and probably can't even decode certain media efficiently anymore, because software changes.

    • +7

I bought the 8gb M1 air after watching many YouTube reviews that said ‘you don’t need 16gb on MacOS’.

My use case for the laptop are mainly web browsing including lots of dense google slides and docs with 10+ tabs open in safari. I am not a heavy user and the computer battery life and speed were awesome. I found the 8gb of RAM filled even when I was using Safari (as opposed to chrome) when a few resource intensive docs/slides were open. It was usable but I noticed the delay.

In the end I sold the 8gb and bought an identical 16gb which I’ve been using for months very happily!

      • +4

Dense Google slides/Docs, especially multiples is on the heavier side.

YouTube reviews that said ‘you don’t need 16gb on MacOS’

YouTubers definitely overhyped the 8gb RAM.

  • +2

Bought it in June 2020, still going strong, feels like brand new.

    • Is that how old this model is? 3 years…

      • +4

Apologies I bought it in June 2021. This model was released in Nov 2020, but truth be told, it’s still a high performing laptop by today’s standard. Doesn’t heat up, no fan, super fast, slim design (the M2 MacBook Air looks too thick and bulky, can’t stand the notch on the top of the screen). That’s probably why Apple didn’t lower the price much after so many years.

      • +1

Yes. But it still feels brand new. Fast, reliable and silent. I bought it for $1300 nearly 2.5 years ago.

    • +1

Same for me - 2.5 years old. No slow down, still feels snappy.

My main machine for any non-gaming home use.

    • My MacBook Air 2017 is still going fast and strong.

  • +3

Great laptop, hard to beat in this price range.

    • +1

hard to beat in this price range.

I'm really struggling with this part.

It's a 2020 model (3 years old!), 8gb ram. Yes, it's an Apple, and if you're only comparing it to Macbooks, it's hands down a winner. But coming from WIndows laptops, the price still doesn't make sense.

I'm a web developer looking for a new laptop. I use a Macbook at work (2022? MBP) and it's a very nice device, and am considering a personal Macbook.

      • +1

Get M2 air with 512gb. There is not noticeable difference in performance with m1 but design in pretty sleek. I am web dev myself using m1 pro at work m1 air as personal.

        • -5

THis m1 air… I just found out that the display is only 720p resolution? THis is a big fail for me unfortunately… Pass! Must be at least FHD.

Thanks for the advice with the M2 air. Storage is not much of an issue for me but the ram is more important, and 8gb doesn't sound right (coming from windows)

          • +1

            @ram4ram: 2560-by-1600 native resolution.

            720p webcam.

I also have a MBP for work, MBA M1 for home use. I have the 8gb model which has been sufficient for me, though, I also have a PC primarily for gaming, and the occasional heavier personal task.

You'd really need to assess what you're doing to make a decision between 8 or 16gb RAM, imo.

          • @ram4ram: The display’s resolution is 2560x1600.

Even the original MacBook Air from 2008 has a display with a higher resolution than 720p. Apple haven’t made a laptop with a display resolution lower than 1280x720 since the iBook in the mid-2000s.

            • +1

@robothat: oh yes, my bad you're right. Not 720p. When you click on the first 'see more' button, the stated resolution is incorrect. I'm not too familiar with the different models, not trying to mislead anyone (and can't edit or remove my original comment)

              • @ram4ram: YOu can report it and mods will delete it or edit it for you. But maybe best to leave it as is and let the comment decay into the night.

      • It makes sense.

The M1 chip still outperforms anything else in this price range. It also runs silently because it has no fans, yet also doesn’t get hot. And it isn’t made of cheap plastic.

You can’t find a better Windows laptop than the M1 Air, especially for less than $1400.

      • +3

Find me a comparably priced laptop, with similar performance and battery life. I'll wait.

        • Well, I'll humour you…I can't answer your question directly and I'm not looking to 'beat' it. I"m just trying to replace my personal laptop.

It's 7 years old. Resolution is 1080p (and I don't need 2k or 4k on a 14'' screen). The processor is good enough (i5 7th gen), and no it won't beat the M1. 8gb ram. Battery life, the M1 will beat it, but mine easily lasts 3+ hours which is good enough.

Price: I got it for $350 2nd hand, 4 years ago.

Build quality, sound quality, the Apple absolutely KILLS it. But for the price, can't complain. Also mine's a touch screen.

Mine's an Acer Aspire S15. Good enough, but aging and Im just looking at alternatives.

Edit: I've done a bit of research on the M1 chip. It seems like it is F-KING good, hands down, can't beat Intel / AMD…? Even though this is 3 years old… Does that make sense? If so, this deal is hands down the winner for everyday users.

          • +1

@ram4ram: If you are happy with that, there are wealth o of business class Windows laptops (for example Dell Latitude or Lenovo X1) that have just come out of warranty.

You could get a really well built, upgradeable laptop for $400-$700.

But buying new, once you get to the $1200 price point, the MacBook Air completely rules.

At $1200 in the Windows world you get one or more of the following issues: poor performance, plasticky casing, throttling, dodgy keyboard or trackpad, poor battery life, bland design, extra bulk, mediocre screen. The one nice thing about cheaper Windows machines is the ability to upgrade the RAM and SSD.

For reference, my family owns a 2015 MacBook Pro, 2 ex corporate business class Dell laptops and one M1 MacBook Air.

            • +1

@mrmark1970: Ex corporate laptops are amazing.
I have a Dell 7490 that I use for personal stuff, and a very cheap Lenovo X1 Gen5.
Both get more than 6 hours (the X1 closer to 8) battery life. The X1 makes a perfect Linux machine.
They were both in perfect condition, and together both of them came in at less than this Macbook m1.

              • @thedean: With pricing like that, and that good of a battery life… I don't get the Macbook Air hype.

Maybe it's the build quality - this one might be the most obvious difference to general consumers.

Maybe it's the screen quality, which might be noticable to them.

Most probably won't care about the keyboard, as long as the Windows one is not totally rubbish.

It's probably the reputation. Apple MacBook.

                • +1

@ram4ram: Buying ex corporate is a gamble, but I was lucky 2 times.

                • -1

@ram4ram: You are comparing refurb to new which isn't really a fair comparison.

The MBA is a good all-rounder and beats much of the current competition while being competitive on price. If you imagine all the specs on a radar chart, would largely be ahead of the competition on most attributes. The thing is, users don't need all the positive qualities - they could cut back on any number of factors - display quality, processing power, build quality, keyboard, touchpad, fanless, etc.

I am using a MBA and I am more than happy with it. It is the best laptop I have owned. The screen is great, I like the aspect ratio, keyboard is great and the touchpad is best in class. My partner has a Dell refurb and thing is an absolute pain to use by comparison - it's loud, screen is not great, touchpad is a pain to use(randomly activates right click on occasion). I also briefly owned a Lenovo which I bought with a decent cashback but ended up sending back due to coil whine. While not completely fair comparisons, the MBA is massive improvement over Windows laptops I have used recently. I don't think it is all reputation - it is genuinely a better machine than many Windows laptops.

All that said, in many respects it is overkill for what I need. I would be perfectly fine with a refurb. The X1 mentioned with Linux is kind of tempting. One of my older laptops was basically just a terminal to use my PC with remote desktop.

PCs for general use have passed good enough a while ago. As long as you're buying 8th gen+, you're likely getting decent performance and a reasonably future proof unit.

            • @mrmark1970: I'll keep an eye out on ex-corporate ones for myself. I have bought one for a family member, but unfortunately there were issues (Dell… keyboard issues).

Anyhow regarding your 2015 MacBook Pros, how are the battery life? I suspect those are Intel ones, not the M1s.

  • +5

People always argue this, but the MacOS + M1 chip really is that at 8GB is fine, unlike Windows. Then we have the great battery life, screen and general build. I switched to Mac due to work and it's honestly been great.

    • -1

      8GB is totally fine!

It's the 256GB that will get you!

It very quickly becomes unusable with that little storage!

      • That really depends. I have a base MBA(8gb/256gb) and storage has never been a concern. Users may also have a NAS or other means of off device storage.

Users should be able to work out their personal files rate of growth and how much they need on the actual device, keeping a storage/back up routine in mind.

      • 8GB is fine for basic users/web browsing. The real answer is it depends on what you do with your machine. M1 macs also store chunks of ram data on you ssd when you reach your ram limit, somewhat degrading your ssd quicker.

  • Fantastic Deal, you'd be hard pressed to get a used one for under $800, so this is a good deal especially with officeworks -10%.

    • +1

Used ones get snapped up fast on FB marketplace when they drop under $1000 here.

You may be thinking of the webcam.

      From the specs

13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch with support for millions of colours

      Supported scaled resolutions:

      • 1680 by 1050
      • 1440 by 900
      • 1024 by 640
    • +5

How do you misread the screen spec? Mind blowing

      • +1

        My bad.

Yeah when you click on 'see more' (the first one), it says: 'Resolution 1280 x 720'

    • Lol wut, even MacBooks from 10 years ago were above 720p

    • It’s fine to hate Apple on many levels but don’t try to cr@p on an objectively good product with blatant lies.

      • my bad? lmao… I don't hate apple, I use a M2 MBP

  • +1

This unit is absolutely amazing… if you don't use Chrome. I've had it for 2 years and only discovered Brave recently as a chrome replacement and its like its new!
