8th gen i5 is plenty of power to do normal tasks or media consumption. I sold a laptop with similar specs (i5 8250U + MX150, but with a 1TB SATA m.2 SSD) for $500 about a year ago, right before these type of refurbs started popping up regularly.
This is pretty good for the price. Not an amazing bargain, but good. I'd say an amazing bargain price is closer to $220.

i got one of these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175663139000 i3 8th gen but with 256Gb looks pretty similar but with touchscreen which i preferred. Needed a spare for kids schooling laptop.

  • This HP or this Dell one, both are same price

For me, HP EliteBook 830 G5, for the screen resolution alone

This. 12.5 vs 13.3 with a FHD screen is a huge difference.

These value ones are not in the same condition as the refurb. They will have some kind of issue …i know as i got one . In my case it was a bright spot on the lcd screen and windows wasnt installed not that was a big deal

        • +1

100% this. I also have purchased one of these models for $256 and change after the code.
I was expecting this to not be in as new condition but here is the laundry list of issues upon receiving mine.

          • 1/2cm diameter bright spot in LCD noticable in dark screen settings (like videos and boot up)
          • 2cm crack in shell behind the screen on the top left corner
          • Bottom right corner the alloy compressed like it has been dropped onto a hard surface
          • 3cm long visible horizontal thin scratch on the screen just in my eye line
          • Battery Health 66%

I was told this was as per description for these 'refurbished' models and no further discount will be given.

          Buyer Beware.

          • +1

@darmz: Can you send it back if you are not happy with the condition? I'm guessing so if it is via eBay Pus

There is the better condtion version of it here possibly, although the description seems identical aside from VALUE at the end of it.

            https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185221697545

Maybe VALUE is code for extra damage and lower price.

This comes in at a higher price as you would expect.

            • +1

@beastontheroad: Yeah it looks that way - Value is extra damaged. I was expecting some of the issues described just not all of them and more. Anyways it moved from a great deal to a good deal. :) I'm OK with it.

              • +1

@darmz: I’ll see what turns up. If it’s a mess rd going back.

Minor damage is fine for the price.

                • @beastontheroad: UPDATE

Turned up in near perfect physical condition, Missing the two rubber feet on the front and the right shift key not working. I can live with that.

                  Very happy with it.

There've plenty for you to choose from, if your budget is > $300. 😁

    • i5-8350U is about twice as fast as I3-8145U, 4 core 8 threads vs 2 core 4 threads. Definitely worth the extra $40

      • But I need touch screen :)

    • these are the other ones i was looking at, much better performance.. but only needed mine as a backup for the kids when the other ones break/break down and have to send in for repair.

        • although this one says..

          That is a G3 and

          grade c
Battery’s health which has somewhere between 50% and 60% of designed capacity.
Item has one USB port broken
Screen display may have some light scratches or/and white spots.

    • if it's anything like my son's school, apparently you get bullied if you don't have a macbook.

  • Any more information on the exact screen this comes with? According to the HP page, this model came with 8 different screen+webcam combinations lol. All of them "13.3" diagonal FHD IPS anti-glare LED-backlit".

  • OOS

  • Hi Guys, Need to buy a laptop for kids school activities, any deals around please? Budget around $350 mark. Appreciate any links, thanks.

    • I've just listed another refurbished HP EliteBook x360 830 G6 for $351.20 / $342.42 (eBay Plus).

      • Thanks a lot @O O, I noticed that deal.

I have never bought the refurbished laptop but looking at price, worth a try? What are risk associated with such refurbished laptops? Usually how is the battery life for these one?

Lastly, do you think that deal is best one can currently get in 350?

        • do you think that deal is best one can currently get in 350?

I think so. Actually, there's a better one a few hour ago. But after mentioned by some OzB, it's snatched up.

          Dell Latitude 7400 $326.82.

        • Refurbished laptops should be ok provided the person who owned/used it previously looked after it. All of them come from corporate lease environments. I literally returned one of these units to my office yesterday as the lease was up - the unit was pristine as I looked after it but the battery health had deteriorated as I kept it plugged in all of the time.
