  • Is it good as a main bootable drive?

    • -3

I'd advise against it as this device is D-ramless which can be on the slow side for a bootable drive but fine for gaming and storage purposes.

      • +3

It's really not gonna be that slow. DRAM-less doesn't automatically result in poor performance. I'd say it would be fine unless you're writing huge amounts daily

        • +1

I disagree. The speed difference between DRAM and no DRAM is significant, particularly when copying files internally or externally.

          • @whats up skip: you know DRAM cache is different than SLC cache right?

            • @himefei: SLC cache is much slower than on board DRAM cache. SLC cache really slows down when a drive starts to fill up. In some designs SLC will result in higher wear than DRAM.

    • It will work. Not the best being dramless and QLC
      Better suited to secondary storage

    • +2

I have it as main bootable drive. All fine for me but I do not do intense gaming etc.

      • +4

        Gaming wouldn't be an issue.
It would be more like video/photo editing or large file writes.
Also being a budget drive, it's reliability wouldn't be as good as a high end drive.

  • +10

oh boy. I gave up data hording because my hdd drives failed and now I see its time to restart.

  • +7

A drive for you data hoarders… or Japanese Aviation aficionados.

  • +3

Well bugger. Just ordered from the deal this morning. I was checking the Centrecom website regularly too.

    • Same here. The woolworths rewards aren't making me feel better.

      • Tempted to buy another :-)

        • +1

Im going to wait for Ebay plus week or something hopefully they stay in freefall.

          • @Noppy: From what I've read/heard, there's a suplus of chips now but unbsure how long it will last. Prices are on a downward trajectory, generally, but who knows how long for.

            • +1

@Orrelljet: Until a fab blinks or mobile phone sales pickup significantly. Generally though it is customer, rather than the fab that has committed to a volume.

just bougth one last week for $299 :(

    • +14

Just buy this to make up for it

      • +1

        Do it @jazeng

      • Can we buy 2 of these to make up more? :-)

    • +1

If it helps I paid $213 for a 2TB nvme a few weeks ago. That being said I needed it for work and couldn't wait, so just have to roll with it.

  • +2

2 dollar question of the day: will this work with PS5?

    • +2

Yes it will. It's a little under recommended speed but will work fine

      • ok thanks I will get one!

      • Isn’t heatsink necessary?

        • +1

Yes you need a heatsink for ps5, my bad I forgot to mention that

    • +1

@gg99 The real MVP. thanks for your service.

  • +1

    To think I bought a 4TB external 2.5" spin-drive a few months ago for $120,
and I still have not used it yet…thinking it won't be as "portable" as a SSD !

  • +2

with prices like this, 3.5" spinning disks are just going to get more expensive.

    • This drive is not as large as many of spinning 3.5" drives and most people don't want to spread the data over multiple drives. For moving large amounts of data this SSD will be much slower than a large 3.5" drive.

  • Fantastic deal - Thanks for posting the deal
Would make an awesome external drive

  • +2

And to think people were spending over $1000 on 4TB M.2 drives going back over a year ago, muppets!

  • any advice on moving data across from my 1TB drive?

    • +2

      Freefilesync for transfer
      or
Macarium reflect (IIRC) to image your drive across

    • Macrium Reflect works well for me.

      • +1

It's worth noting that Macrium Reflect have stopped doing free editions now.

  • +1

        • when is next shipment arriving ?

          any other SSD deals?

  • +1
