    What a SHTSAVER!

I'll buy this cpu when it comes down to around $550. Bloody motherboard I want will be more expensive than the cpu.

  • +2

I am always unsure on buying components from ebay. If something goes wrong, is it really just the 30 days warranty on this, seems risky these days.
(I dont actually expect people to be able to speak for the seller, I have contacted them as well this was more just a discussion point)

    • +4

I guess the good thing about most components is that if they are faulty then you'll know within 30 days.

      • +1

True, the 30 days will cover DoA components, but with the recent, exploding CPU issues (and previous PSU etc) there could be issues coming up a few months down the track. potentially the manufacturer would cover this maybe.

        • +4

potentially the manufacturer would cover this maybe

          Asus? Hahahahaha

          • +1

@Lps: Lol not ASUS, ASUS will send you a tissue to dry your tears of frustration.

    • +5

In my experience buying from KS, as it's new you get a tax invoice - use that for any warranty claims (though you're likely going to need to RMA it yourself talking to the manufacturer).
I've had to do this with an ASUS router I got via ebay that died within the warranty period. I had no issues though… YMMV

      • right, so (in your experience) its pretty much the same warranty, except you have to manage the RMA instead of just taking it back to the store and having them manage it?

    • +7

is it really just the 30 days warranty on this

      No?
ACL and manufacturer warranty cover you.

      • +1

Great, sorry if it was a stupid question.
Haven't bought PC parts for ages, so its regular coverage but you have to deal with it yourself. The regular stores just offer the management process (Sometimes) for you.

        • +3

They're brand new parts from a legitimate business.
You'll be covered the exact same as if it were from a physical store, just without the "physical" aspect.
They (online stores) can help you, but you'll probably have an easier time just dealing directly with the manufacturer. And most of them will tell you to do so.

    • is it really just the 30 days warranty

Yes - unless ASUS - then no warranty whatsoever

      • All new products come with a warranty, including ASUS.

        • w….w….wh….whoo….wh

          meh, forget it

    • I bought a modem last year and they replaced it. So no issues

    • 30 days is the return window isn't it?
It should have the same manufacturer warranty period as any other component bought from a brick and mortar store..?

  • +2

Just hold off a few weeks on installing it & update your motherboard to the lastest bios to avoid the SOC Voltage frying the chip/board issue

    • +1

My CPU and Asus mobo arrived the day all started going down lmao.

I’m on the latest bios update from Asus and everything is running great (so far)…

It’s a shame because this CPU is a beast

      • +1

Mine was a few weeks before, although I've got the 7700x. I held off the beta bios updates until Asus walked back their BS warranty voiding claims, but am on the latest AGESA 1.0.0.6 bios until they release an updated 1.0.0.7 for my board, which just checking looks like it's been released overnight.
Time to go flash the machine, again

        • +1

Ahh i've been waiting for 1.0.0.7, thank you. I shall flash my machine.

  • -1

If you're buying this CPU from KS to pair with a new motherboard

    1. Buy a non-ASUS motherboard that has BIOS flashback
    2. Flash the mobo to the latest BIOS with latest AGESA using a USB stick
    3. Then install the CPU, XMP/EXPO RAM and everything else

Even if your board doesn't have flashback, you can still install the CPU first before flashing the BIOS

Just ensure you do not activate XMP/EXPO or tweak any BIOS settings before the flash

    • What is KS?

      • +1

        I assume it's "Kai Seng":

"Standard price jacking and RMA caveats about Kai Seng Computers (shallothead / Shopping Express / Futu Online / gg.tech365) apply"

        • +3

Right, so weird how we're all just meant to know this!

    • +2

We're told that failures have occurred with all motherboard brands, including Biostar, ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and ASRock.

      https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-7000-burning-out…

So I don't think "non-ASUS" is going to save you - I guess I've heard more press surrounding ASUS boards though.

      • The point of "non-Asus" is that they totally push the responsible of exploding MB out of them, while other brands do a bit of cover

        • They've been forced to back right off from that over the last couple of days after Gamers Nexus went to town with their failure analysis & called out their BS.
In the last couple of days they've stated they're still warrant beta bioses & have removed the EXPO/XMP warnings.

Shit that they needed to be forced into it, but glad they've been pulled into line.

      • +2

It's apparently ASUS was trying to quietly sweep this under the rug~

      • +3

The issue was that Asus was actively trying to void people's warranties for completely normal usage - unlike the other manufacturers.

    • how did you change the font in your replies?

This CPU or 13900k for $800

    • With the recent fiasco with CPU cooking, I would stay away…

      • Been using a 7900x3d since launch no issue with multiple workloads. Just made sure that the motherboard maker was keeping within AMD specifications for voltages.

    • +4

If you only really play games plus minor productivity -> this
If you do a fair bit of productivity work (rendering) -> 13900k

      • If you really truly going to be redering get a 7950x because the TDP on that 13900k will go through the roof. Have feedback from colleagues who bought a 13900k to render, which throttle because the 360 AIO can't keep up with the high TDP.

        • Wasn't there a video where LTT hooked up a 13900k to an industrial cooling unit and it still couldnt stop it from throttling?

    • +2

Where did you find 13900k for $800? I seem to only be able to find it around $850. Cheers

      • +1

The main selling point for the 7800X3D for me was it's efficiency. 13900K still seems impossible to cool

    • -3

13900K every day and twice on sundays.
Jufes from FrameChasers has proved that it is faster than 7800X3D for gaming Max Overclock vs Max Overclock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytpVOFvbv8w&t=862s

      • +2

But the 7800x3d uses a fraction of the power to game and is easy to cool vs the 13900k.

        43w for 7800x3d vs over 143w for the 13900k

        https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-7800x3d/23.ht…

So you can save money on cooling and power supply vs the 13900k for similar performance.

        • +1

          Agreed!

        • does intel motherboard also need that motherboard chipset fan like AMD boards?

      • +1

Aren't most games these days more GPU-bound though? Buying a top of the line CPU purely for gaming just seems like a waste IMO.

        • Some games like Factorio and older single core games get mega boost from the big cache on these chips

        • Good for Paradox titles, which is primarily why I bought it

  • SHTSAVES5 did they for get the I in that one?

  • +1

    wheres the 5800X3D deals… :(

    • There was one from last night. Might not be as cheap as most people are after, but a good CPU all the same. Would have bought one, except my 5600 is a strong little CPU and can't justify the effort or cost.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/775349

  • I was so keen for this CPU to come out. Had plans to pair it with an asus 670e. Glad i dodged that bullet.. now i heard gigabyte also is overvolting CPU's. Anyone know if asrock has overvolting issues?

    • why are the board makers over volting?

  • the issues are blown out of proportion imo. Thanks op, been looking at this deal for a while and have caved.

Now to choose the motherboard… do I really need pcie 5

  • +2

Thanks OP, ordered 2 to run in SLI.

  • +3

Is this store eligible for the Jedi Survivor promo?

    • Would also be interested in knowing this.

      • +2

I messaged them and they already replied, this is eligible for the game code.

  • Can someone please recommend a good AMD cpu and mobo combo? Preferably Asus motherboard.

Been out of the game for a long time, don’t need super powerful CPU but guessing most will be fair update from my 4th gen i7.

    Thank you :)

    • Preferably Asus motherboard

Don't with recent fiasco with Asus, stay away!

      • Aah okay didn’t know about any of that, I’ll do some googling, I just bought Asus router and my old Asus board has been amazing that’s why I put down Asus on comments.

        • +2

asus product are still fine. the recent fiasco does put a heavy dent on their name. but its not as if other brands didnt have problems before and are somehow in the clear. if you like asus and their stuff does work for you. no reason not to go for it.

          • @Brrrrt: They're all degrees of average tbh.

Once this is out of the news cycle people will be back to buying Asus…

  • Any deals going for a decent motherboard to pair with this cpu?

  • I built an AM5 build with the 7700X from a previous deal waiting for this CPU to drop, but with how buggy things have been with random crashes and unstable boots I kinda wish I went with a 13900K instead.

This is a decent price but just know the random headaches that come with AM5

    • Just curious what sort of issues you having? I built a 7700X system too and it's rock solid even with heavily tweaked memory and undervolted CPU where I am easily getting 5.5GHz in lighter loads and close to 5.2GHz all core in Cinebench on air cooling.

I did have issue with CPU not wanting to play nice with 6200MHz memory though (which I underclocked to 6000MHz but with much tighter timings which would perform way better than stock XMP profile anyway).

    • what motherboard you got?

      How much total cost?

How much would the intel build cost?
And what board would you get?

Also how do you know intel won't have some other issues?

The downside is the intel would use more energy and increase your energy cost each year

      • The downside is the intel would use more energy and increase your energy cost each year

You can do the maths but I assure you the difference in energy costs will be negligible

  • Damn, didn't know these blow up, such a bummer.

    • Worrying about one of these blowing up is kind of like worrying about dying in a plane crash. Sure there is a chance, but it's not likely. Especially with the new bios updates.

  • +1

AM5 is still in "beta" status, I would wait till next year

  • +1

mobo prices are not helping the sales on these

  • Maybe AMD should start making their own motherboards.

  • dam just got the 5800x3d. thinking about returning and getting this for $170 extra? paid 510 for the 5800x3d.

    • +2

keep in mind the extra costs of changing your ddr4 memory to ddr5 and an AM5 motherboard too

      • +2

ah thanks, i knew i would need to upgrade motherboard to am5 but didn't know about ddr5. plus it has a lot of problems still. ill stick with 5800x3d cheers
