It's super rare to see Breville one on sale, so thats a good sale

  • waiting for it to drop to around $150

    • -1

How long will that take? It will be obsolete before it is sub $150

    • +1

Among all the Apple products, which of them had above average hardware specs?

    • +2

It may be good for those who wanted it.

      You’d think so, wouldn’t you?

    • You don’t need high hardware specs for iOS compared to Android.

    • +3

Rubbish - it has a A15 bionic chip in it. Same chip that powers the iPhone 13 series.

  • Is it latest version apple tv? Any advantage over googletv4k?

    • Unless your in the Apple ecosystem. I have an iPhone and used to have apple tv but sold it and prefer google tv or firestick

        • apple TV is powerful but is wall garden and too restrictive

if apple let you sideload your own apps
that would be great and worth getting.

there are many people who want to install Kodi but can't.

the apple allowed apps/alternative is not as good as Kodi.
it is either cripple version or requires paying a yearly licence

          • @pinkybrain: This is true. Hopefully iOS 17 allows sideloading

            • +3

@kubernetesxp: There are people who enjoy using Kodi, and nothing to do with piracy..
There also heaps of addons in Kodi that has nothing to do with piracy.

The apple allow app version of Kodi is cripple MrMc
that you need to pay for and hope they still maintain and give you updates.
And you need to pay for a cripple version vs getting full version of Kodi + updates for free on other devices.

Then there is the INFUSE app
that needs to pay yearly license to keep using it.

Just cos you don't need to use Kodi, don't mean others don't either.
Each people have their own preferences.

I got apple products and their products are good but completely wall garden and restrictive.
There's no freedom if you want to do anything that Apple don't approve of.
Even though you bought and own the device, they still have complete control over it.

At least on their MacOS, you are free to install your own apps vs only get it from the Mac Store.
That is why there is currently court case about being able to sideload apps on the ipad.

Also don't act like you some sort of Goody Two Shoes.
Your PC probably contains lots of stuff that are not "legitimate".

Now stop drinking Apple Kool aid.

            • @kubernetesxp: It’s easy enough to do piracy on Apple TV.

    • It is a better device if you’re in the Apple ecosystem.

AirPods pairs with the Apple TV with a push of a button, and makes use of spatial and Dolby atmos audio. I use my AirPods Max with it and it is ridiculously good.

Also you can use your iPhone as a remote, and use your tv as an external display for a Mac.

    • It's much more powerful. The remote and UI/UX is more wife friendly. It doesn't pipe user data to Google. It's more capable for gaming, just sync an Xbox or PS4 controller to it, though no Fortnite after EPIC dummy spat.

If you could easily install Kodi, I'd have one of these but that's the deal breaker for me.

    • +1

That’s the only thing holding me back too would be good if it gets jailbreak till then long live nvidia shield tv pro

    • I used to be in the same camp.
But I managed to get all the functionality I wanted by paying for Infuse (for local / NAS media) and Channels for PVR / FTA.

My Nvidia Sheild TV Pro used to be my daily driver, however the lack of native refresh rate and HDR switching was a deal breaker.
Even if you downloaded the "Refresh Rate" app, it wouldn't work well for all apps (eg. Disney Plus) and it had a 2-3 second delay.

In comparison, the Apple TV has instant refresh rate switching built in and it works for all apps and keeps the GUI for apps nice and smooth.

  • can we price match/beat with Office works or JB?

    • They usually won't price beat if the price is only obtainable with coupons and such. Has to be publicly visible when they bring the page up on their store computer.

      • +1

        Thanks for clarifying

  • Can you get the Plex client on AppleTv?

    • +1

      Yes, it works great.

      • +1

Thanks Moose, bloody rippa. I just learnt there’s a SwiftFin client that works too for those complaining about Kodi not working.

  • What is the infared tuning like? Is the power and volume controls compatible with most models of TV's and AV Receivers? Have quite an old receiver (2009 Yamaha) and a 2017 Samsung Smart TV. Would prefer not using CEC for power.
My setup is fully compatible with the Shield TV Pro remote infared – so just wondering if ATV has the same level of compatabilities

    • I have ATV in a closed cupboard and control it via the remote of my 8 year old Panasonic tv. Don’t know about the underlying technologies, but it works and on the odd occasion I need to do something that the tv remote can’t do (like Fast swipe to jump forward to a particular spot on Netflix or Plex) I control it via my iPhone.

ATV best stream device I have owned. You won’t regret it, if you have the budget for it. Even if you don’t, save up for it. YOLO.

    • -6

      negged for YOLO

      • +4

        negged for negged

        • +1

          positive for negged

    • Is there an easy way to stream free to air content ad free?

      • Just install all the TV network apps.

        • Yeah, that’s what I do. Have got rid of my Fetch service as no longer need it with all the individual network apps now.

        • +1

That’s not the answer to my question. Unfortunately official apps force you to register and make you watch advertising.

I am looking for an easy way to access all that content without the ads. Which seems to be hard to do on Apple TV. It kills Apple TV for me unless there’s an easy way I don’t know about lol

    • I'm going to buy another one just because using Chromecast to spare TV is giving me the shits with the Binge app.

  • +1

    Thanks, got the Apple TV.

Anyone looking for a cheaper option could price match this at officeworks (probably easier in NSW as JW is a NSW store.

64gb Wifi only version $179 (~$170 with pricematch)

    https://www.jw.com.au/product/apple-tv-4k-3rd-generation-wi-…

    • Thanks for suggestion! Price matched lowest price ever for this!

  • +1

We use Apple TV at home and bought a FireStick for parents in law. The difference is night and day, the Apple TV is so snappy.

If you need a box just for mainstream streaming services like Disney, Netflix, Amazon, Paramount, Stan etc then the Apple TV does the job well.

If you are just streaming and don’t need Ethernet, then get the 64GB model when that’s on sale.

  • Can't seem to be able to buy one due to my address (Townsville) FNQ is an exclusion? TGG has a store here!

    • That’s pretty strange! You could try a AusPost Parcel Locker if you haven’t already.

      • +1

Tried, doesn't work for any PL location in Townsville. :(

  • Anyone know if it’s decent for Dolby Atmos output? I am planning on getting 990b/c and wondering if it can support that

    • +1

      It outputs Atmos without issue.

  • Just confirming this is 5th generation which would allow support as a Matter hub?

    • Yeah this will work as a Matter/Thread hub. The Wi-Fi only version does not.

      • +1

Thanks for that. Ordered one and returned a prior one I had.
