Price dropped from approximately $1100. Impressive performance and price given the size as per reviews: https://www.techradar.com/reviews/beelink-ser6-pro-7735hs-re…

There is an argument for waiting for units with Ryzen 7940HS, though not likely to release at this price point.

    Good price drop.
Not very flattering review though (looks like older gen has similar performance and with 3 years warranty vs 1 year for this, I would rather go for NUC 12 Extreme):

Unless I'm missing something, isn't the NUC 12 Extreme is about twice the price?

      • Ah my apologies! Was trying to say NUC 12 Pro.

Not seeing the deal as you can get a laptop with similar spec for not that much more money

    • +2

Well, by your own points, they're only similar in spec, and more money.

Also, these manage to tuck into much smaller areas than a laptop, and due to the smaller enclosure size manage to stay cooler\quieter also.
Maintenence is also easier if you're working in a dusty environment, which is a common use case for NUC's

    • +1

Same components will generally run better in this config due to heat management and no need to manage power draw. Also, different use cases - I have a small workspace and this takes up less room than a laptop.

    • Why pay more money for a computer that takes more desk space with a screen and keyboard you'll never use?

      • The point is you can use it if you want. I bought my laptop i7 1260p with 16gb for aroud 900. 90% of the time its connected to my 2 monitors and used as desktop setup for work and study. But i can take it with me when i am travelling too. Granted i only do word excel browsing and video calls and never felt my laptop was any slowere than my i9 desktop at work. But i can see different use case but for me not a deal.

        • 90% of the time its connected to my 2 monitors and used as desktop setup for work and study.

Different products are created for different target markets. My PC is connected to my monitors and keyboard 100% of the time on a sit/stand desk in my dedicated home office which is the only location I use for tasks that require a PC. The only device I require out of my office is a 13" tablet for media consumption. A laptop would be inferior for my use case.

Why are these not being powered by USB C is beyond me

    • Some mini PC's are. I know Minisforum have some that can do PD and Video over the USB-C directly from a monitor if the monitor supports PD.

    • Cost and Intel hasn't done it on NUCs yet. Apple hasn't done it for Mac Mini either.

In the current form, they can give you an el cheapo power adapter and you probably wouldn't notice.

  • minisforum UM790 with the 7940HS is available now on special, for shipping early July. ~758 AUD for the barebone kit or ~977AUD for the 32/512

    • Add shipping chief

      • there's free shipping or a $35 dollar option with no details about timing
        edit: to Sydney

      • +1

The other things that put me off is (1) its a preorder discount and there's no reviews, (2) history of heat issues with previous models, and (3) known for basically not having a warranty.

        • When I tried to visit the Minisforum site a few days ago it was down, which also doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

  • +1

    No deal

    Minisforum UM790 Pro Ryzen 9 7940HS Barebone - $834.16
    Crucial 32GB (2x16 GB) CL46 5600 DDR5 SODIMM - $158.49
    Western Digital Blue SN570 500GB PCIe Gen 3 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD - $40
    Total - $1032.65

Once the other OEM's and Beelink themselves release their Phoenix designs over the next few months, Zen 3 mini PC's will drop in value faster than a Surface Laptop

    • +1

I don't understand why 'no deal'?

      $824 is less than $1032

      • +1

Way better performance on the UM790

  • 12 month warranty doesn't cut it on computers or parts. I like 3 years 😊

    • I am more concerned about getting BIOS updates for these. If we are talking about AMD, AGESA updates are likely needed. I just updated my AMD desktop systems to latest AGESA recently. Honestly, if even the big 4 cannot release BIOS with AGESA updates in a timely fashion, what can we really expect from these smaller mini PC makers?

      • If it's working when you get it, do you really need a BIOS update? You won't be changing the CPU or anything.

  • Would it be a bad idea to get this from Amazon US instead for ~$754 including delivery? I realise you would also need to get a cord with Australian plug for the power brick, so could you just get this for $6 (I assume it's 3 pin?)?

    • How comfortable are you posting a parcel overseas if needed? Have you dealt with Amazon USA after sales service before?

One thing I am not a fan of Beelink and Minisforum is that the ones with RAM and SSD, you can end up getting generic brand ones, not the ones Beelink sent to reviewers.

    • If you can buy it from the AU page, using US as the seller, then its still 'local everything' (thanks ACL!)

If you buy from the .com you'll need to handle returns and shipping yourself; sometimes even a mail forwarding service.

      • Not quite even for Amazon AU. I am going through a similar process and let's just say that even Amazon AU CSR doesn't know the correct procedure for international returns (or based on what they've been told, they have not informed the customers the eaiset method, so if you don't actually know the best way, you could be less incline to do the returns).

I am aware of 2 OZBers not wanting to return due to thinking the default process (which they've been told and written on Web sites) being tedious. That process was fine pre-Covid, but since Covid, things have changed for DHL and Fedex. If you followed that procedure 100%, it can be quite annoying for most people.

        • Thanks for this. Was thinking of buying a 3070 ti for ~380$ from .com but if returns is difficult not worth the hassle

          • @cobknob: It's relative. If you have sent parcels overseas before, then you are quite likely comfortable with the process so it won't be a big issue. It's not difficult, just a little bit tedious the first time you do it.

Before Amazon AU, we had to do it.

        • I've done more than a dozen 'international' returns.
All I've ever needed to do was remind them I'm Australian, and they send me a label, no more questions.
Though I do always need to say 'I'm shopping from Australia under ACL' and they instantly have apologised and handled it.
Doesn't matter if it's a 3rd party store or an original one; the SHOP is 'Amazon AU' so THEY handle the returns.

I'm surprised you've had hassle honestly; though I know amazon has horror stories, so perhapss I shouldn't be.

          • @MasterScythe: It's not getting the return labels that's the issue. Amazon AU CSRs are telling people to return the item to a DHL drop off location. In VIC and NSW, there are only 3 locations each. Part of the problem is actually Covid in which DHL and Fedex have made some changes in terms of parcel / item lodgement.

I'm sure you've sent those returns a different way, but that's probably because you know the much easier way. I have informed the OZBers I know about the easier method. It's up to them to decide whether they want to go ahead with the returns. We've done it a few times so it is not a big deal for us (frankly, if I had to drop the item to one of those DHL drop off locations, I would do it, but to some people, they don't want that hassle).

          • @MasterScythe: Spoke too soon. Amazon AU just screwed up my refund.

Quick update: Amazon AU currently insists I pay for the return postage. Any pointers? The CSR person I spoke to told me I don't need to pay for return postage, but it looks like the system ignores that or that CSR done something wrong yesterday.

    • Note that is in USD, at check out the total is USD$625 which is approx AU $910.

      • +1

Yeah it was cheaper but the sale ended several hours ago

  • This model has been $824 on Amazon AU quite a few times.

Personally, I went for the GMKtec K2 which has the same CPU/RAM/SSD spec for $670 on Aliexpress when they had the Winter Sale.
I went with this one as they ship the 32GB with a single Crucial DDR5 so I can upgrade to 64GB later on without having to throw anything away.

It is currently USD $491 so approx AU $710.

    • How do you find it fan noise wise? Do you game on it? Cheers

      • +1

It is on its way - I should get it in the first week of July.
I do not do much gaming, I will likely try a few light games on it, although I am interested in seeing how MS Flight Simulator will run on it.

      • The K2 was shipped to me in 6 days.
The fan is audible, speeding up when downloading and installing etc, but it settles down to almost silent.
Overall it seems good so far.
I dont have any new games only old ones on steam and they all seem to run fine.

        • +1

Cheers, thank you for the reply and info

          • @mctubster: No problem, additionally the PC arrived with 2x16GB so was a little disappointed about that, anyhow 32GB seems good for now.
It can be run with just a USB-c cable from the Lenovo monitor which could be handy as well.
Win 11 and Ubuntu 23.04 both run perfectly, next will try proxmox on it.

I bought a 7730U mini pc from aliexpress, barebones was AUD$435 including postage. 32Gb ram and 500Gb SSD would add maybe $150 to that.

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/5215vs5138/AMD-Ryzen-7-…

Only 4% slower on single core and 20% slower multi core, and it's only 15W TDP vs 54W for this, so should be cooler/quieter.

Hopefully I don't have any problems with aliexpress though…
