  • How much performance gain would I see going from
    i7 8700k 4.9ghz oc + 4080 to this cpu

    • +1

Mostly depends on the games you play and the resolution you play at.

      • 1440p mostly multiplayer games, holding out on making the jump until I see a 50% performance increase in the cpu department.

        • +4

You'll be severely bottlenecked running a 4080 with that CPU in most titles, even at 4K you'll be leaving performance on the table. If you can afford a 4080 already definitely upgrade. Since you're doing an entire platform upgrade I'd say skip am4 entirely and go am5 with a 7700X, you'll have platform longevity that way.

        • +1

If you're running slow RAM then I would expect a 7800X3D with fast RAM to be very close to 50% though it still depends on games and settings used.

        • Hardware Unboxed released a couple of videos comparing the 5800x3D with both the 7800x3D and 7600x. The conclusion was that in both cases if you're buying an entire system it's better to go with the AM5 part. The 5800x3D is only worth it if you're looking to extend the life of your existing AM4 system.

    • +4

Just a heads up you would need to change motherboards to!

    • -5

With the i7 8700k running at 4.9ghz the gains would be minor (~10%) at best and nowhere near worth the cost of mobo/cpu.

    • +13

If doing whole platform upgrade skip this and go 7000 series or Intel 12/13th gen

This CPU really only viable for people upgrading from older AM4 processors

    • -6

That GPU is overkill for 1440p

      • +3

Is it? I find 1440p is the sweet spot for both high res and high fps, especially when considering ray tracing.

      • Each to their own but for me…

        1440p + RTX4080 is a very nice system.

4K + any currently available GPU is still a somewhat limiting and undesirable system.

    • +2

Other than a 9900k upgrade, you are looking for a platform upgrade. If you are aiming for AMD instead of the 5800x3d, I would recommend the 7700. The total platform cost is about the same. It is also about 1% performance improvement in gaming over a 5800x3d on a vastly better platform but depends on games you play and better at production workloads. The 7700 was $415 just recently (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780759). Motherboard around the same and ram slightly more expensive (DDR4 32gb recently for $89 at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774870, DDR5 32gb recently for $138 at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/782898).

      • That ram will bottle neck the CPU.

        • +1

This guy is definitely a troll.
A really bad one at that.

          • +1

@Deviner: Why do you feel so? Have you watched hub video on ddr5 ram speed for non X3d CPU? Especially when using high end GPU at 1440p res, it's more pronounced.

        • @John Doh Ah, my bad I was not looking at timing, I just quickly searched prices on Ozbargain. I just wanted to dissuade a person who is not on AM4 already to buy 5800x3d which required the full AM4 platform (maybe minus ram) instead of AM5 or Raptor lake. However, I think 5200 cl40 ram would be fine on the 7800x3d or a 7700 with a graphics card that is not a 4090/4080/7900xtx.

          • @popmenow: Its not just the GPU, AM5 platform will support 2 more gens of CPU upgrade and we dont know how those CPUs will perform with slower memory, so its ideal (not a necessity) to have the fastest ram one can reasonably afford.

            • @John Doh: I not sure about that. Got the feeling that the current 6000-7000mt ram is like the ddr4 2400-3000 speed ram. My guess with DDR5 in 2 generations time will be a lot cheaper and a lot faster like how DDR4 matured.

    • +6

Since its a platform change (ie Intel -> AMD) your better off investing in AM5 rather than spending money on AM4.

    • +1

New 5800x3d + new m/b + new ddr4 RAM probably will cost similar to 7700 + m/b + ddr5 RAM. The new platform (7700) is slightly faster in avg for gaming. 5800x3d is for the people who already has the compatible m/b and ddr4 RAM that will cost less to upgrade and perform similarly to 7600 and 7700. New platforms also means you can upgrade to 7800x3d or 8800x3d (when they are cheaper) in few years time without buying new m/b and RAM

    • If you game at FHD or 1440p, substantial.

If you game at 4K or higher with max RT, probably no more than 5%.

X3D will save you from needing high speed ram. But you will need a new AM4 motherboard, which wouldn't make sense if you don't already have one. Skip ahead to AM5 and 7800X3D, I say.

I went from 3600 to 5800X3D. Got exactly 1 fps, if that, in triple 4k max with minimal RT, on a 7900XT.

    • I'm guessing you'll be playing at least 2k. You won't even notice the difference.

  • I'm on a 3900x paired to a 3080.
Mostly compile code on it and play CSGO.

I am loosing L2 cache by 33% (6MB down to 4MB) and gaining L3 cache by 33% (64MB to 96MB), Not sure whether it is a good update.

Has anyone done a same move ?

  • hmmm should i upgrade my r5 3600?
running a 5700xt but wanting to upgrade that down the line also…. kinda just wanna run with AM4 till i cant anymore

    • +2

unless you're upgrading to ~4080+ levels of gpu and playing at 1080p, this is only marginally better than the 5700x, which is half the price.

      • He's running a 5700 XT gpu rather than a 5700X cpu - these names are way too alike 😅

Moving from a 3600 to a 5800x3D is a pretty big performance increase for gaming and is the best you can get for AM4 if you're sticking with it a little longer.

But, you might see some gpu bottlenecking with/if you hang onto the 5700 XT.

      • +4

I've been saying time and time again that the 5700x is the best bang for buck upgrade from 3600/3700x and below. No need for 5800x3d, save that money and put it towards a new gpu or new system in the future.

        • +2

Agree. I upgraded from 5700x to 5800x3d, stupidly forgetting all the research that got me to buy the 5700x in the first place. Now I just try to forget about that purchase.

          • @tonyamazing: What GPU are you running? And how much difference did you notice?

            • @Mingles: RTX 4090 on 4k display. No noticeable difference.

Which makes sense, right? I must have had money burning in my pocket or something because that upgrade was not worth it.

              • @tonyamazing: Yeah I guess your GPU would be doing most of the work at 4K.

I've also been tempted to upgrade to the 5800x3d coming from a 5700x for the same reason, just needed something to upgrade after getting the 4080 lol… even started exploring AM5 upgrades but might wait out for AM6 I think!

              • @tonyamazing: Damn, that sucks.
But yeah, a lot of what I read indicates the 5800x3d didn't show any major, major gains in 4K.

If it makes you feel any better, I did an even worse upgrade from a 5800x to a 5800x3d… :D
But, the major proviso being that I'm playing on 1440p (3440x1440 ultra wide) with a 7900 XTX - but the kicker being the game I was playing most was Warzone 2, which everyone knows is a very cpu-bound console port with a multitude of optimisation problems.

So, I went from about 100-140fps to more or less a solid 140fps (capped 144hz monitor).

Prooobably not worth it for that one game, which I haven't played much since Diablo 4 came out… :|

I will not even upgrade from my 5600, there is improvement but not $450 improvements. Put the $450 towards your next GPU upgrade will get you much more performance. $450 almost like 4070 ti to 4080 or 7900xt to 7900xtx.

Edit: oh, from 3600 CPU and 5700xt GPU. 5700XT isn’t a fast GPU, don’t think 5800x3d will help much. I will still save the money towards a new GPU. Not sayings you should buy 6700xt (you shouldn’t), but 6700xt for similar price will boost your gaming performance more. https://youtu.be/Pt-8Bkvy4F4

    • +2

      I went from 3600 and 5700XT to 3600 and 7900XT. Then upgraded the 3600 to 5800X3D.

I would say save your money and get a better GPU. I saw almost zero performance gain with the 5800X3D move. But it depends on what resolution you game at. If 1080P, then it should make a not insubstantial difference.

Honestly, your 3600/5700XT is a fantastic value pairing. 5700XT is such good value right now 2nd hand.

    • I'll hold, there's rumours for a 5600x3d. If non x3d benchmarks were anything to go by, the 5600x3d will perform relatively similar in gaming

  • This one is still valid and cheaper: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780677

    • +1

Not if you have ebay plus

      • +1

Ah, didn't see the cheaper price, thanks

  • Hey guys need some advice please.
Can anyone recommend me a good laptop fron this seller, around 900-1100 with at least 15.6", 16gb ram, 256gb, no touch and oled. I'm so confused about all these laptop. I'm using photoshop, canva, opening a lot of tabs, watching youtube, etc.
    Thanks

  • It has been this price for a while. Good price though

  • +1

This is the 1080P cpu correct?

for 1440P and above you don't need anything above a 5600x and its more gpu dependant.

    • This cpu is still really good for 1440p, its about the framerate not the resolution. If you push for 100+ then the 5800x3d is much more appropriate

  • Is it worth the upgrade from r5 3600 32gb ram, rtx3070?
Currently play fps in 1080p (soon to be 1440p) and Sim racing in 5760x1080p.
Or am I better off getting a 5600x/5700x and save money for better gpu?
Performance currently is okay, could do with more stable 1% lows and general performance increase, I feel the 3600 is a bit laggy with normal windows.

    Thanks

    • Below is great video about 3600 vs 5600 vs 5800x3d in 1080p and 1440p, with medium or high settings. GPU used 6950 xt and 6600 xt.
Beware the 1080p or medium settings may be the bottleneck by the CPU. If you play high/epic settings, ignore the medium settings.
      https://youtu.be/2HqE03SpdOs
My opinion, under 80-100 fps, 5800x3d outperforms 5600 or even 3600 by much. Definitely not worth $450 if you don’t have decent GPU to games at 100+ fps.

  • I've waited 18mths for it to come down in price…. then I paid rego this morning :(

thought you'd like to know that.

  • Where's the local 7700X price drop please

    https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-ryzen-cpus-getting-cheaper-5…

  • All i do is game AAA titles 3440x1440 at >60fps. Do i care about getting one of this to replace my Ryzen 5 2600?

    • If I have decent GPU like 6950xt or above and playing at 3440x1440, i may only consider. As $450 isn't cheap for few more fps, i will save $450 for new GPU

      • Oh I forgot to mention, I'm running base RTX 2080.

    • thanks.

  • Is gg.tech Shopping Express? Why do they need multiple ebay accounts?

    • Was just going to ask about the seller…. any history on them? I seem to remember issues

  • I've been itching to upgrade something in my Ryzen 3600 + RX6700XT system for 1440p gaming.

Has anyone had any meaningful improvements upgrading this combo to a 5800x3d, or even a 5700x? I'm not ready to leave AM4 behind just yet but wouldn't mind a little more umph in my setup.

If you are playing 1440p at high/epic settings with 6700xt, upgrade 3600 to 5800x3d will get few fps only. Check the YouTube above, they used 6950xt and 6600xt GPU. 6700xt should closer to 6600xt, you should check that (first 2 benchmarks are medium quality, you should ignore them if you are playing high/epic quality.)
5800x3d will give your system little more fps, but I don’t think it’s worth $450 (same price as new 6700xt). Except you have very good GPU that will be bottlenecked by your 3600.(6700xt not 1 of them)

    • In the exact same boat as you. Currrently running a Ryzen 3600 and upgraded from a GTX 1060 to the 6700XT a few days ago (thanks OzBargain).

I would say it depends on your usage. If it's mostly gaming, the 5700x (or even 5600x) would be sufficient since the 5800x3d is $200 more, so ultimately you'd be paying 80% more for slightly better performance. In saying that, I've also considered the x3d since it's AM4's "end game" and I don't see myself upgrading either components in the foreseeable future.

If budget isn't an issue, 5800x3d otherwise if you're after value for money, probably 5700x.

  • Currently have a 5600x paired with a GTX 1070, looking at upgrading to a 5800X3D and pairing it with a 3070 how much more room for upgrades would I have after this upgrade?

    Would a 5800X3D bottleneck a 4080 ti or 5000 or 6000 series at 1080p?

    • +1

5800x3d isn't a top CPU now, as it's gaming performance is similar to cheapest AMD 7 series 7600 + DDR5. So don't expect it can handle top end 5000/6000 series.

      • Oh thanks for that, so out of the loop as to whats good and not these days didn't realise it wasn't high end, guess I'll settle maybe with pairing the 5800X3D with a 4080 or whatever the 5070 will be and retire my AM4 system there

        Thanks for that

  • Should be $275

  • Mandatory for AM4 systems used for MSFS
