That's the old one, no USB-C output.

      Was about to hit buy…

I got one of the newer ones (Surface Dock 2) for $130 off ebay after the 22% off….

          Should have posted the deal!

      • Now say bye bye instead…

Only thing worse than a surface is a surface dock

    • +2

Have to strongly disagree.. I've had one at home for years and aside from the occasional hiccup (usually if I haven't rebooted for a week+), it's a godsend in getting up and running from home after I come home from the office.

Working in IT at larger volumes we have had many many fail.
Shitloads more than other manufacturer docks

I have no issues with Surfaces but agreed on surface docks. Massive pain!

Used ones around $60 on ebay. Even cheaper on marketplace

    • yeah this refub business they buy at peanut price or probably free because they come, take all up and clean up the office (save company to hire IT/removalist/cleaner), then sell at high profit

would love to buy a keyboard… I mean … only if it cheap enough…

    • The surface pro 6 i recently got for $400 came with a brand new keyboard and new battery. Was very suprised.

No kidding… they must know you well JV

I'm a little confused about the specs.

    This says

When connecting your Surface to monitors through Surface Dock, the maximum refresh or screen resolution through the Mini DisplayPort will be 4096 x 2160 @30Hz or 2960 x 1440 @60Hz

However this table, linked from this forum says

    Connected to one external monitor
    Surface Dock model
    Surface Dock
    60Hz
    4096 x 2304

    • Was going to ask what the max resolution & refresh rate that this dock can handle for both a single and dual monitor setup… unfortunately I am still non the wiser. Any IT admins who have Surface products in their company able to shed any light? Thx

When connecting your Surface to monitors through Surface Dock, the maximum refresh or screen resolution through the Mini DisplayPort will be 4096 x 2160 @30Hz or 2960 x 1440 @60Hz, even if the device capabilities exceed this.

        • You literally just quoted a subsection of my comment… not clarifying the contradiction between two sources that say different things

            @GettingThePlus190s:

            not clarifying the contradiction

            I don't see any contradiction.

            It clearly says "4096 x 2160 @30Hz or 2960 x 1440 @60Hz"

            • @jv: source 1: "…4096 x 2160 @30Hz"
              source 2: "60Hz 4096 x 2304"

              • @GettingThePlus190s:

                source 2: "60Hz 4096 x 2304"

where does it say that ?

                • @jv: However this table, linked from this forum says

                  Connected to one external monitor
                  Surface Dock model
                  Surface Dock
                  60Hz
                  4096 x 2304

                  • @GettingThePlus190s: That is if the device is directly connected to the monitor.

                    • @jv:

                      When using Surface Dock

When connecting through Surface Dock there’s a maximum screen refresh or resolution possible, even if some Surface model capabilities exceed this. The following table specifies the max refresh rate and screen resolution for Surface devices that are using either one or two external displays.

                      Connected to one external monitor

                      Surface Dock model

                      Max refresh rate
                      Max screen resolution
                      Surface Dock
                      60Hz
                      4096 x 2304

        • So (assuming that is correct) can it drive 2 monitors at a resolution of 2960 x 1440 at 30hz? (irrespective of what the surface itself can output)

  • +1

I use the version 2 (with USB-C) at work, get all sorts of issues, possibly related to using HDMI to USB-C convertors (monitors not waking and keyboard/mouse freezing). Am I better off just using a third party dock?

    • possibly related to using HDMI to USB-C convertors

Are you using the Microsoft convertor ?

      • It didn't come with one, so just using some third party HDMI => USB-C cables.

        • I read somewhere that they need to be 'active' cables to work with the surface dock

  • Do not leave your Surface plugged in to this dock or the charger overnight. It will kill your battery within a few years.

      • That is brilliant - thanks.

Is this different to Windows "Smart Charging" which seems to keep my surface charged around the 75% level? (irrespective of the BIOS setting being at 50%)

        • +1

          sorry, not sure…

    • Another tip is to leave it open when it's docked as it can get super hot. When I had a Surface Pro, the heat generated by this caused the screen to warp and then separate off the body.

  • A pox on the Surface Dock, both generations. My Gen 1 was ok for a couple of years and then got very problematic - I'd have to keep reconnecting the Surface Connect connector to get it to work. Sometimes for work I'd have to give up and use the SP4 and then the SP6 by itself.

Bought a replacement power supply after reading that could be a fix, and it worked for another 1.5 years. So then splashed for its successor.

The Gen 2 was ok for about 1.5 years and then last week the USB-A ports failed, with no amount of troubleshooting able to rescue them. Thankfully the USB-C slots work fine and so I can use a couple of the x-in-1 hubs that OzB always dangles in front of us.

  • So deal has expired……. was $299, now down to $149. So which is the real price?????
