Nice find. The DMX7022S wired version is $479 as well, probably worth adding to the post

    • +22

A great price also, but not having Wireless Android Auto and Wireless Apple Car play is a huge negative. Spend the extra and get wireless. Dont bother with the adapters.

      • +15

Don’t know about “huge” negative, wired allows you to charge at the same time. Not to mention the battery drain of having gps running and playing music without a power source.
If I had wireless I’d probably still be plugging it in to charge it anyway.

        • +3

Something to add though: In my car I need to choose between having it connected to android auto and actually charging it quickly with a dedicated charger. Wireless option would give the best of both worlds.

        • +1

Depends on what charge the USB port provides. Some barely provide enough to offset the power consumption required to run android auto + GPS mapping. Some don't even provide that much (so over long drives, you actually lose battery). Having wireless, lets you plug in to a high speed charger, whilst proving the AA/CP connection wirelessly. And on short trips, where power consumption isn't an issue, you don't even need to take the phone out of your pocket.

        • Actually due to the screen being off my iPhone battery seems to last hours on CarPlay with Waze and Spotify, but good point.

      • +1

I’d rather have the ability to charge my phone also

      • +1

Spend the extra and get wireless.

Don't think the wireless is worth it.

The battery drain on wireless is significant and will probably kill your battery with all the discharge and recharge cycle.

I have wireless Android Auto and always plug in so I'm not draining the battery.

        • +1

Are you plugging into the unit or a charger?

          • @ihfree: It's the same thing - car has a USB port, which is both the Android Auto port and also a charger.

            • +1

@p1 ama: In the case of this headunit, it looks to do 5V 1.5A. A sony unit I was looking at did 5V/3A. My current car charger does 25W and supports PPS.

Depending on the car of headunit, there may be some benefit to using a wireless and seperate charger.

      • I deliberately avoided a wireless unit so that I can just jump in my car and the cable charges my phone.
Wireless Android Auto with maps running is a big battery drain - I much prefer arriving at my destination with a fully charged phone 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • +9

How far are y'all driving to have significant drain?
Id do a 20min drive into town with wireless android auto, no dramas.

If I'm on a long trip then just plug into a USB charger.

The simplicity to hop in the car, drive and get out without even touching my phone in my pocket is optimal.

        • Wife keeps the phone in her handbag, never gets it out.
Perhaps an Android thing, but having the screen off my iPhone lasts many hours with Waze and Spotify.

      • Agreed with wireless, it’s so nice to have. You still keep the ability to plug in your phone as well.

      • Adapters are cheap and they work fine.

    • +3

Thanks, this is probably the one for me.

    • +10

With the aerpro adapters most cars are quite straight forward and I'd say most can do it themselves with basic tools(torx, philips and maybe trim removal tools - which I've generally used alternatives). Airtasker is your best bet otherwise

      • +3

I tried it myself and I consider myself pretty good at this kind of thing.
Personally I would not go through the stress again.
I put in a wireless airplay Kenwood in as well as adding a rear reversing and front camera set up. I would just pay someone next time.

        • +2

camera setups grossly overcomplicate the setup. They need power from specific places (reverse camera to reverse light) they need earths, they need to run cabling from cabin to exterior.

head unit swap and nothing else is a matter of buying the adapters the aerpro site tells you to, watching a youtube on how to get the dash fascia off, and some basic tools.

          • @Laserface: Yeah it was the reverse camera trigger wire which made my Mazda 3 install take soooo much longer. Eventually I bought a multimeter and the very last wire I was going to try ended up being the right one.
It was a nightmare but it's now been working perfectly for 3 years.

            • @theguyrules: Hindsight is obviously 20/20 but trying to do electrical work, even just basic plug and play stuff like aerpro harness hookups, without a multimeter is just asking for grief.

              • @daanish: Yeah lesson learned and I've used the multimeter for more stuff since then so money well spent. (Just a basic one from Jaycar)

    • What car (year/make/model/variant)? You might be able to DIY, depending on the car and what parts are required to make it fit.

      • I have a 2014 Honda Civic VTi-LN hatchback - the headunit part of my car looks like this. The Aerpro website confuses me with the parts that I require.

    • I had someone from Airtasker doing the job, $200-250 is what most of them charge. I used a guy called Daniel. If you post it there, he’ll certainly make an offer and you’ll be delighted by his service. Great dude.

      • May I know where are you located? So that I can check if this Daniel guy is in the same state.

        • +1

Brisbane. He's from the Gold Coast but comes to Brisbane for these jobs. Here's his profile: https://imgur.com/a/F0X7uJY (imgur says it's NSFW, but really it's just a profile pic of airtasker 🤷‍♂️) And no, I'm not him.

  • Looked at this unit yesterday when Autobarn had their 25% off storewide but still only came down to ~$640 which seems to be similar price at a few other stores. For this reason i walked out. Great timing!

Was leaning towards a GTzone unit which is stand alone Android unit with wireless carplay but think this deal might make it worthwhile.

    • +1

The Kenwood is reliable. I have the 9018DABS version (how time flies) and very happy with it.

      • Yeah kenwoods the best headunit brand. My ddx9019dabs going very strong still with more features than any current headunit!

        • Yep, had a kenwood DMX7704S and it was great

    • You can ways price match it at autobarn, supercheap etc.

      • +1

Yeah unfortunately autobarn didnt have this model in stock at my local. Thought they did but it was the dmx7522dabs. Supercheap dont sell them.

  • Incredible price for wireless aa

  • +1

How do you know if its fits your vehicle?

    • I am curious for my Lexus CT 200h also if any auto boffins can assist please

      • +1

Looking at your car interior I think your best option is to get the nifty city module as I have no idea where you could put a double din stereo. It's double the price of this but has proper integration with all the factory features, they have a sale on right now which lowers the price a bit. The coupon codes are in red at the top of the product info.

        https://www.niftycity.shop/products/lexus-ct-2013-2020-apple…

As per the photos it even integrates with the navigation dial and touchpad in the car.

    • You just read the deal post which links you to the answer 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • Lexus 200h isn't on aerpro site, if you look at an interior pic for the car there isn't really anywhere to mount a double din, the factory screen is used for a bunch of functionality on the car so you can't exactly replace it with any aftermarket stereo. Need to get a chinese unit made specifically to replace it or get a piggyback system to run off the factory screen.

        • Lexus 200h isn't on aerpro site

This is your answer 😁 If the fitting parts don't exist for your car, then you won't be able to fit an aftermarket unit like this one.

  • +2

    Ordered thanks OP.

Also used code "ILOVEAUTOSS" for $10 off

  • +2

FYI, After having a decent Sony one and a chinese aliexpress one. I think the aliexpress ones are just much better value. Full Wireless AA/Carplay, cheaper, and comes with facia and harnesses. Get 4GB ram models.

    • Have never been happy with any sony product I've had in a vehicle.

    • +2

Can you link your ali one? I've tried Chinese head units in the past and they're just not worth the hassle. After 6 months they get very slow and random background services keep crashing, they randomly reboot and take a long time to startup.

The big positives for the Chinese ones are they make them for specific car models so you don't lose any of your OEM features and they come with replacement face plates specific for your vehicle so they integrate better into the dash.

      • +1

I got an eonon q63 for my Mazda, $320 with wireless AA/carplay, reverse camera, OBD scanner. Value is insane but I've only had it for 1-2months so can't talk to longevity, so far it's amazing compared to what I've have to spend for this + harness + install if it's too hard for me

        • can you send link / specific model - have been meaning to get one of these for my Mazda, but got confused with different processors / ram etc. thx man

          • @Rizzler: What model is your Mazda and I'll find the right one for you?

            • @Phesto: Anything you recommend for Toyota corolla sedan 2012?

            • @Phesto: Hi Chief - it’s the BN 2010 Mazda 3 with Bose. Appreciate the reply 👍🏼👍🏼

              • +1

@Rizzler: Eonon Q63 pro from Amazon, I installed it in my 2012 Mazda 3 a few months ago and has been great. Occasionally it's on sale for $320 and you can return the "free" extras to get $100 back

                • +1

@Phesto: One thing to keep in mind is they CAN BE more buggy/temperamental than big name brand units. My parents car has an alpine unit and it definitely wireless connects to phones faster. However it's also much more expensive.

I had to spend a bit of time dialing in the settings, updating the software and generally just fiddling with it until I was happy. Sound quality is now incredible even with stock speakers.
I'm more than happy with what I paid and it brought the car forward at least 5 years tech wise, I'd be happy driving this for another 5 years the way it is now.

      • Just installed an Aliexpress one in my 2015 Honda Jazz this week. The newer generation 8-core QLED 720p screen ones are fantastic. I bought my one with 8GB ram 128GB storage, 9 inch screen including the frame for my Honda Jazz for about $305 delivered after the recent Aliexpress sale and combined coupons.

If your car has the space for (i.e. the screen wont block the air vents) I highly recommend getting the new 13 inch model screens for about less than $350 for a 4GB model.

If you are going to get one, based on reasearch from online reviews, 4GB ram is the sweet spot. 2GB ram on a 8core processor is adequate. IN my case, I just went for 8GB ram just to be safe. SO far, using Waze, Google maps, panning across the screen, pinch and zoom, its all seamless, no lag.

    • +1

I found the absolute opposite. I've had a few AliExpress units over the years and they ALL had miscellaneous issues. Moved to a Sony unit and it just works without a single issue.

  • +5

I bought this for $490 about 2 weeks ago on ebay with a 20% code - this is a good price but can get it even lower

  • Be careful with automotive superstore. I did refund with them but I didn’t get yet and slow respond from them.

  • +2

I got this wired Sony XAV AX3000 from Supercheap Auto for $450 on sale nearly 2 yrs ago , got it installed by a professional , seemed too stressful to try and do myself and has been well worth it , love it but drops out v v v rarely, just replug, I think it's my charger cable tho..

  • Needs DAB+

    • +1

      TuneIn does the job nicely.

  • Does any one know if it as a web browser? Can't see it in the manual.

  • Had a bad experience with Kenwood/JVC’s support. My JVC unit bricked after a (successful) firmware upgrade. JVC refused to flash my firmware and said it was a hardware issue, and wanted 700 dollars to fix it. Which is more than what the unit costs.

Happened a few months out of warranty date so was pissed off about that.

    • +3

Australian Consumer Law > "Warranty card"

    • Sure it was hardware bricked? There are two updates, I did one it worked (System). Then the second (application) with the same USB and my unit was bricked. Wouldn't power on, no lights, spent days, but no power light or anything. Dead as a dodo.

Then someone pointed out it could be my USB.
Although my USB was 8GB FAT32, the USB has to be between 8GB and 32GB formatted in FAT32.

Found another USB 8GB, downloaded a tool to format as FAT32 put it in and started the head-unit, waited a few moments and bam it worked again.

  • I want to find a head unit can support my car, Honda Odyssey MY20. Probably it can compatible the 360 camera. Any recommend? Appreciate

    • Looks like a standard double din setup. Check on the aerpro website to see what it reckons.
You just need one that accepts the 360 degree camera although I expect you would get to keep the camera views but lose the 360 view.

Is it a model that already has CarPlay? If so and you want wireless just get a usb dongle like carlinkit, which cost about $100-$150.

      • Unfortunately, this model Does not support carplay.

    • probably better to confirm with the store if 360 camera can be supported, but I have installed a different headunit on Honda Odyssey 2015 and the rear camera is working.
Have a look at the [Aerpro site] (https://aerpro.com/vehicles/honda/honda-odyssey-2014) for cabling needed.

  • +1

Good price, but very basic unit.
I have this unit, however a $150 unit from a AliExpress is soo much better.
Doesn’t even do wired / wiresless mirroring with iOS just android.
    Does wireless CarPlay though.

    • Have a link to one you might recommend?

      • Most of the ones on ALiexpress are all identical (just rebranded by the different companies).

The good one you want to look for is: 8-core QLED 720p screen. Recommend getting the 4GB ram at minimum.

Most of the bad reviews you see on Youtube or negative reviews on the website are from the older models that use the slower processor.

My $300 8-core QLED 720p 8GB RAM, 128GB storage model boots up INSTANTLY as soon as I start the car.

        • Agree, although mine was 4gb and 8 core.
          https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/Se78c939fbafd45c781cb7998a4ceeb82…
Sure some aspects are not as polished.
          - Super Responsive (assuming you don't install tons ofc crappy apps and leave them running)
          - Includes everything, (eg: Reversing camera and SMU, so all the original car features worked)
          - Apps are cleaner and easier to use (eg: Radio, Kenwood radio app is crap, can't even mute)
          - Included the Mount\Faceplate for my Car
          - A lot quicker to setup
          - Instant start (sleep mode)

          • Brighter screen
Most importantly, has in-built Navigation apps that can be used by P-Platers.

          Downsides,
          - Kenwood has a nicer interface when using multiple phones paired
          - Includes a fan (if the car is off I can hear it, if your running standard apps, you don't need it, can always add a resister to lower the speed)

If someone just uses iOS CarPlay and that is it and isn't on a budget, then the Kenwood is probably the better choice.
I spent about 1.3k all up on the Kenwood, including the extras, Camera, Faceplate.
Where the AliExpress one was < $200 when purchased on-sale for a different car, and well I prefer the AliExpress version. Wife would prefer the Kenwood.

PS: Neither are perfect with CarPlay, after a phone update, both experience the same buggy behavior, that goes away after either updating the head-units and\or waiting for a phone Fix. Kenwood June update, brought the reliability in-line with the AliExpress.

      • +2

Heres what my 9 inch one looks like on my honda jazz 2015 the qled screen is really nice

        https://imgur.com/a/VhOsyr0

        • Can you wear polarised sunglasses? I have a similar unit and you can’t see the screen whilst wearing sunglasses

          Makes it useless

          • @Brick50: Sorry, don't have polarise glasses to test, but I do have normal sunglasses and they work fine. The viewing angle on mine is quite good.

    • This is an Apple restriction, not a limitation of the head unit

      • +1

I disagree, I bought this one off Aliexpress with 4GB ram 32GB internal storage and it's super buggy. Doesn't always want to connect and makes it difficult trying to connect/disconnect between 2 phones.

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33034231857.html?spm=a2g0o.o…

        • You have to use wireless carplay, it doesn't work if you plug it in via cable which is frustrating as the wireless doesn't always work.
        • Also wireless carplay shows up as a little preview 1/4 of the screen. When you click to make it full size it will disconnect and have to reconnect again
        • If you go to radio and go back to carplay it will be disconnected so have to go to Settings > Phones > Connect phone again. (takes 30 seconds)
        • Internal and external microphone is so bad you can't really use it

About what you would expect for $250, but thats why its half the price of brand name units

      • No, the Kenwood model up supports ios wired mirroring.

  • Seen a lot of head units on sale recently.
My Hyundai 2014 radio has the no sound issue, there are quotes to fix it for around $350.

I did bit of research a while ago into these head units, eventually chose a model but when I went to test it, it was slow to respond or didn't register touches etc. Interface wasn't great and it was over $500.

I like the idea of adding functionality instead of just fixing the sound issue.

What would a good AliExpress version cost? Or is it better to go with a "name brand" like this one?

  • it looks like this doesnt have a cd player
i like kenwoods stuff but im after one with "the lot" android auto/dab/cd player

what is the cheapest model for that?

  • How do these things work in cars that have a lot of car control/data stuff in their existing unit? I assume you're stuck with the factory version?

    • If you have a car with a lot of data stuff then yeah you're stuck with factory version.

If you're willing to spend 1k+, a lot of cars have apple carplay modules you can get so retains the factory unit but adds on top of it.

      • I already have Android Auto, it's more that I don't think the sound quality is all that fabulous from my current head unit (VW Golf R stock head unit). Plus I enjoy needlessly tinkering with and upgrading things…

    • The ones from AliExpress come with a SMU I think it's called, but integrates all the existing car stuff.
Also an option with Kenwood, but they charge extra and features are limited.

  • Make sure you sign up for the newsletter before purchase, brings it down to $486

  • +1

Just grab an Aliexpress HU. Far better interface, cheaper and has all the extras of being a fully fledged Android tablet/device.

    • Which one?

      • +1

There are SO many. Some offer complete fascia trim panel replacement for specific popular car models together with the HU so it looks factory integrated once installed. I am surprised there is still a market for these brand name expensive standalone HU these days.

Also, the lack of a physical volume knob is a big inconvenience, not to mention safety risk when using.

        • +2

Surely the DAC/Amp components of these known brands is far better than the Chinese head units?

Also, I think most have volume buttons on their steering wheel these days.
