Quite disappointing discount of 2.34% and the difficulty in making a purchase last deal. It'll be a pass from me

    • OP bought all on behalf all ozbargainers.

  • +37

If you haven't been following the previous deal, you can no longer add these to PayPal.

  • +4

Bring back the 10% off :)

    • +5

If no one buys these, they might have to.

Coles trying to see whats the lowest discount they can get away with.

  • +26

I've actually bought these gift cards before. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. They claim that you can use them anywhere that accepts Mastercards, but that's just misleading. The number of places where you can actually use these cards is extremely limited. Some merchants might accept them one day but then they'll suddenly block them, leaving you with even fewer options. It's basically a gamble with your money.

And don't even get me started on Giftcards.com.au's customer service. They're absolutely useless. They'll just tell you to call the card issuer, who won't be able to help you either. They'll simply say, "You've already bought the card, so there's nothing we can do." Their only suggestion is to try using it at a different merchant.

I'm sharing my own experience here, but hey if you still want to take the risk and fall into this trap, the decision is yours. Just wanted to give you a heads-up based on what I've been through

  • +2

Sorry coles group, Best i can do is 10%

No deal here, when its always 10%

    • +2

Well the problem is if it sells for 5% then they will eventually phase out 10% off for 5%. Inflation is up - companies tightening the screws on customers!

  • +14

Whatever you do, don’t use these to top-up a Myki online.
The next day after I did, PTV Finance issued their own chargeback, and not only blacklisted the Coles Mastercard, but all bank debit/credit cards I’ve ever used to top-up online. I bought a new Myki and created a whole new online account but all my bank debit/credit cards are somehow hard blacklisted. My only option is to top up manually using a Myki machine.
Been spending the last month trying to get it sorted with multiple calls to the call centre and 2 complaints arguing that I need to travel and would like to pay my way but they don’t care and it’s gone nowhere and said “PTV Finance ordered a Chargeback on the $250 TopUp but we are unable to provide further details”. I just had to go to the PT Ombudsman and they’ve raised it with Myki and awaiting a response. Biggest headache ever.

    • +1

      WTF? Why?

      • +1

Beats me, they won’t provide any reason as it came from higher up in PTV Finance and the call centre don’t have visibility. Have had my Myki account since 2009 and always had Auto TopUp in place and paid my way, never used one of these Coles cards for it before so it’s not as if it’s chargeback or fraud related. They ordered the Chargeback from their end the day after (took about 3-4 days to land back in the balance of the Coles Mastercard). Maybe they’ve been stung with these cards so just “assumed” I was doing the wrong thing. Or they simply don’t like the idea of discounted PT fares.

        • +1

For PT it is not discounted, they are getting a full amount.

          • @Sidor: Yeah, unless a staff member knew about the OzBargain deal and it didn’t fit work their personal views haha. I was initially going to use it to a Myki Pass but just added it as Myki Money. Wonder if they would have just cancelled the Myki Pass if I did it that way.

    • +2

Gee thanks for sharing your experience. I've only topped up manually at the myki machine with these cards, so good to note not to attempt paying online.

I suspect there will be more complications/restrictions moving forward with these cards as it gets more popular to the general public, with AML and whatnot 😢

    • +3

That sucks. I recently topped up my Myki online with these cards but no issues on my end yet.

    • Maybe this is new. I’ve recently used one of my $250 digital gift card and recharged my ptv card. No issues faced and I can still use my old visa card to recharge. But if this is what PTV is doing now, its a shame and Beyond logic!

      • +1

Maybe! I did mine on 31 May around 4pm, they ordered the chargeback the next day 1 June.

When they ordered the chargeback the next day, when I touched on at a reader that evening, the system then debited the $250 from the balance and it then caused the Auto TopUp to trigger. As the call centre had no idea what had happened and raised a reimbursement, they cancelled the Auto TopUp as well. Now I can’t re-add the Auto TopUp either.

        • I topped up $350 (100+250) on the 2nd June no issues. Maybe this a system issue rather than intentional?

    • +1

Sounds like a fun prank to top up someone else's Myki lol

    • +1

A similar thing happened to me after topping up 250 , but from a regular bank credit card (was trying to meet minimum spend for bonus). They reversed all top ups i had done for the past month from other cards and took the money from myki balance. Subsequent top ups from other cards have also been reversed. Call centre and ptv hub had no idea what was happening. Not sure if i now need a completely new myki and ptv account?

    • Did you ever get an update on this?

      • +1

Yeah, took a complaint to the Public Transport Ombudsman and 7 weeks to resolve

  • +4

    10% minimum, or nothing.

  • Tooo early to pay ATO this year

    • You can prepay, can't you?

      • Have to have balance

    • Do ATO allows partial payment?

      • +1

        Yes.

  • +4

If this deal sells out then it will probably become the standard discount for future sales. Why offer 10% when you can sell just as many at 5%.

    • +1

Correct that is why people should think before participating in such deal

  • +15

Guys stay away from this deal - The discount is not worth the time, effort and risk of buying these gift cards.
    1. Due to the $6.65 purchase fee the discount is only 2.34%
    2. Some merchants e.g. service nsw, health fund etc. don't allow you to make partial payments i.e. if you have to pay $600 for rego you cannot use $250 MC
    3. High Risk of fraud - I bough 4 giftcard on 31/5 at 10% discount or 7.5% discount (with fee), received gift card via email. I managed to succesfully use 3 of the cards and when I opened the 4th Card the funds were already gone to some crypto wallet which makes me think scammers can easily work out the 16 digit card number, expiry and CVV.

Lodging a dispute is a nighmare with these guys. After wasting over 2 hours with 2 different reps I got told to fill a form (word doc), and then sit back and wait for a response. Been over 3 weeks and I have not heard back anything so basically all this hassle to save few $'s.

    • +2

WOAH! I'm sooooooooooooo lucky. I manage to purchase about 20 of these during the same time and used them straight away to pay SRO, ATO, City West Water, Buy Amazon Gift cards & pay some merchants like Frucor and Routleys. As soon as they came I was ready to use! Didn't delay.

      Which Crypto Wallet?

      • That's the only way to use these cards. Anything else is just asking to be hacked.

      • $7 minus 5% is $6.65. Nothing changed. The discount always applied to the purchase price.

        • Oops, my bad!

    • That's the thing that I'm puzzled about. However are they able to find the CVV.

      • +1

They don't need it. Some will happily process your payment without it.

    • Which crypto wallet? Maybe you should use it on your own account before they had the chance.

  • +1

    I prefer the physical cards
Atleast you can use them at eftpos

  • +4

A pass for me mostly (slightly tempted to do 5 cards) due to all the issues that people have mentioned above and previously.

On the phone currently (again), waiting to discuss three hacked cards.

Waiting time for outcomes are 30 business days (6 weeks) and 45-90 regular days (about 7-13 weeks)
I have to set reminders to chase this up / very tedious
    Down $590:
    * 2 x $250 (2 cards activated and were paid for but can not be used / they are aware but state response time is 30 business days)
    * ~$90 used by someone prior to opening card (small purchases at random shops in NZ)

Speaking with Alba who has told me that they are waiting documents (photos of cards, my ID I think, and receipt (always keep you receipt), they also wanted packaging which I had thrown out before realizing cards would not work). I have already sent them the documents on May 15. So the status is awaiting documents but they have a note that documents have been received. ????? I asked Alba why is the status "awaiting documents" if documents have been received more than 30 business days ago.

It has been more than 30 business days for 2 of the cards.
I am now being passed through to a supervisor.
Fairly high chance that the phone call will not be picked up.
Making threats to go to media and forums to expose the delay in responding to the corrupted cards. A long response time given that many operators already stated that the understood the cards were corrupted cards. I didn't quite understand how they knew, but my impression was that a hacker had correctly found the number combination and tried to use but failed because card was not activated. This led to a flag on the card. However, the card could still be bought and 'activated' at Coles.

Informed the customer care team that I was recording the phone call.
On another wait for 20 min.
    …..

    • Have you buought them from Coles, off the shelf?

      • I had no issue with digital ones.
I probably bought about 400-500 physical ones in last 2 years.
        3-4 have had problems.
Older expiry date ones are usual more trouble.
So about 1% cards are hacked. Maybe slightly less like 1 in 200 I am guessing.
2 from the same Coles were bad.

        • Have you picked up them off the shelf? My local Coles started keeping $250 gift card under the bench at the customer service counter. Whereas $100 ones are still all over the place on shelves and even on the table. Will be hesitant grabbing $100 ones.

          • +1

@Sidor: hacked ones were bought in store

            • @chrometophobic: Did you get it back? As I got an email said a replacement card would send in 28 business days in April, but 2 months now, still not received it yet.

    • +2

I have two cards which have been hacked.
I lodged the claims, sent them the doc they required. Theysaid that it would take up to 90 days to "investigate". They alsa said that they would be trying to recover the money from the merchants. And only then they would advise about the results of their "investigation". So they do not even guarantee that they would refund the funds. Insane!

      • Were they digital from this deal? How long did you have them before using them? Trying to decide if I should purchase.

  • +3

On the phone with Beatrice now.
I am providing Beatrice all three case numbers.
    Requesting the card number.
Customer service do not have information about emails.
Beatrice is sending through an email to the 'team'.
The first customer service member was stating the 30 business days has not gone past.
Beatrice, the supervisor, can count better and does confirm 30 days has passed on the 26th June.
She is now checking information and contacting the next 'team' by emai.

    • Wow! What a sh*tshow!

    • +1

They are waiting for new money from this deal to pay for the loss. So you may hope it sells some.

  • +2

Now the phone call has gone quiet with the waiting music stopped. Call is still connected but no response.
Eventually retuned but most would hang up as waiting music stopped.
Took 20 minutes to 'triple' check information and send one email.
No email can be sent documenting that a conservation took place.
Back office will send an email in 24-48h.

  • Do these still work on Woolworths gift card portal? I used via PayPal last time but all reports indicate PayPal doesn't work anymore.

    • +1

Nope, hasn’t worked for over a year now.

      • So PayPal was the only loophole 😪

        • +1

          PayPal blocked them too

  • Yeah 5% is not worth the risk.

    • +1

@mt2000 - 2.34% not 5% after you factor in the $7 activation fee

      • +1

        Yeah even worse LOL

        • yeah, for a second - even if I was to genuinely think of buying this, the use case is just so damn limited!

NO Paypal, NO to most Gift card portals (Prezzee, Woolworths, etc). NO to mobile wallet (e.g GPAY, Apple Pay). So legitimate use case is ATO or HECS payments, etc.

You could try tricks to cash out but its only time until you get banned for multiple prepaid card use OR Incomm blocks the merchant you're trying with

          • +2

            @nsingh21:

So legitimate use case is ATO or HECS payments, etc.

Don’t forget the physical Coles Mastercard gift cards experienced an issue in November 2022 where payments to the ATO were blocked, and then was later unblocked, so there is a chance that payments to the ATO could be blocked again…

            • @WookieMonster: @WookieMonster - I think you have the gift of predicting the future. [Comments] (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784324#comment-13954211) from a few minutes suggest that its happening again! Aargh disaster.

Gonna leave the cash in ING or BOQ for 5 months, will get my savings back the long way (but safer & reliable way)

              • +1

@nsingh21: It looks like I did not jinx it and things are back to normal!

I am most certainly not purchasing any gift cards through this deal…

                • +1

@WookieMonster: Haha no worries! I recall one of your other comments on being to 10 different Coles stores the past fortnight so I'd assume no need to stock up anymore (atleast for now). Sorry too lazy to find that comment and link here lol

                  • +1

@nsingh21: Don’t worry, I think I know which comment that is haha.

I actually don’t like the digital Coles Mastercard gift cards (especially with them blocking PayPal “indefinitely”), because I mainly use Coles Mastercard gift cards for in-person purchases.

And you are right, I also have no need to purchase any more Coles Mastercard gift cards at the moment.

                    • +2

@WookieMonster: and we knew it too because if there is ever a giftcard deal posted by OP that doesn't have WM's FAQs pinned below it, that means no seal of approval from our saviour hence pull out and run for your lives haha!

            • +2

@WookieMonster: Added card to sniip but can't seem to pay the ATO with it (This biller does not accept this payment method)

          • +1

@nsingh21: Used on CR TrueReward $20 fine 2 days ago, but now is very limited usage. This is a deal for the true risk taker for the 0.34% benefit, I will stay with the 2% from HSBC.

            • @c9: @c9 Thanks mate for the headsup on TrueReward! Our OzB fam loves Card.gift, Prezzee, and RewardGateway since they regularly sell giftcards at discount for our preferred merchants. With the PayPal workaround now closed, I'll look at TrueReward but can hardly see myself pulling the trigger unless giftcards are discounted on these platforms.

  • +3

I used a card just now to pay ATO - worked fine

    • Me too.

  • is the balance check website mybalancenow.com.au down? Can't check the my physical cards, but digital cards seems ok?

  • this is still fine if you intend to use them v quickly

  • +1

2.34% too low, and high risk. No thank you

  • -2

Hardly find $250 card in store anyway.
    Waste of time

  • +2

Just bought some and the 5% was only off the card value not the activation fee.. not sure if I can be bothered contacting them.. already paid them all to my ATO account.. amex points for paying tax bill :-)

    • Wow! Lowering the percentage even more. Coles is seriously penny pinching this time.

      • +2

To be honest, I'm surprised at the frequency with which Coles has been marketing this promo for the past 3 months! Its been insane. It used to be 3-4 times per year and now we've had more than that in just the past quarter! FYI - unless you can spend your card balances fully in 2-3 months, it's not worth buying it at all given the annual bank interest rates go as high as 5.65%…you'll cover off your 2.34% profit within a few months if left in the bank (risk free)/effort free

        • +1

I'm doing it more for the points, discount is always welcome…

        • Tin foil hat on. I wonder if they are trying to sell as many of these as possible to keep the money flowing in. Just in case things go pear shaped.

Doesn't take long to see that people are having issues with hacked cards, moving of goal posts and restricted vendors.

          • @t25: I buy them and pay them off my ATO account straight away..

            • @nold: Yeah. I bought some to do the same. I also prepaid a few more bills so I can lock in my savings risk free.

    • @nold I bought one this morning with the $7 fee. Rang them and they have now fixed the error. 35c difference would be automatically refunded to the payment card. Anyone who paid $7 would get the refund. I got another one with the discounted $6.65 fee

      • @trixieb not sure I can be bothered.. don't' want to draw attention to my purchasing ;-)

        • +1

@nold They didn't ask for my details and said the refunds would be processed automatically. They were fixing the issue this morning

          • @trixieb: I have had one refund for $3.50 magically appear on the credit card, so they must be working through them all.. I never called
