  • does this have the specs for windows 11?

    • +3

The website page says "Windows 11 Pre-installed"

      • +10

Plenty of older used PCs come with Win-11 preinstalled, even though they don't meet the specs. So it wasn't a terrible question.

    • +3

Yep. 7060 was the first of the 7000 range Optiplex's with compliant-gen CPU's fitted for Win 11 compatibility.

  • +3

not bad… i got same model with 16GB/256GB NvME for $250 = $230 after $20 ebay code 2 months ago

it also game with a grpahics card to boot.

this PC is a great all rounder - no gaming but can handle heaps of tabs + office apps + kayo+ itunes + plex open all at once with ease

    • Me too

    • Really snappy cpu

    • Oops.. i meant the one with the i7 7700 cpu in it… not sure about this cpu

    • Wow this cpu is slightly better than the i7 7700… thats cool!

      • +1

Esp for transcoding for anyone looking to Plex it up…

      • Well it does have 50% more cores.

  • Windows 11 Home or Pro?

    • +6

I've checked a few serial numbers. They all look to be Pro which is pretty normal.

      • Thanks. Bought :)

      • Hi there

I just received my computer yesterday. It is very loud even when idle. Sounds like a fan and hard drive working hard. Is this normal?

  • +1

    Intel i5-8300

    6 Core, 6 Threads

    3.0GHz, Turbo 4.1GHz

  • +1

How will this perform as a plex server? Is this plus a massive USB harddrive a great setup? Will it be silent and not consume too much energy?

Is there another system I should be looking at?

    • +10

Nope - no need to look any further. The 7060 and it's i5-8500 is widely considered one of the best balances of price / performance / form factor / running costs for folk running Plex servers or similar use cases.

Absense of an optical drive means it can handle a HDD + SDD with a little finagling too, so good for content storage.

      Fire when ready.

    • +4

Should be epic. I have the Optiplex 9020 with the i5 4590 cpu. I put an 8tb hard drive in it when I got it and connected my existing USB drives to it.
It's perfect. Doesn't transcode 4k great because of the older CPU but this newer CPU should do it no dramas. I direct play everything anyway.
It's fairly quiet - it lives in my garage though.

As for power usage: I have mine connected to an energy monitoring plug and it uses ~23kWh a month, so ~$5 a month to run.
Pulls ~42W streaming a movie and ~33W idle but running Homebridge and whatnot.

I'm quite tempted by this upgrade but I know I don't need it.

    • +4

As UncleRico said, great system for a plex server. The i5-8500 is the sweet spot for 4k plex transcoding as its got Quick Sync gen 6, but is significantly more powerful than the i5-7XXX generation.

      • Wow interesting - my AMD Ryzen 5 3600 struggles with 4K HDR to 1080p. All the CPUs max out and it struggles.

This intel i5-8500 can muscle through?

        • +2

Yeah it can, thanks to Quick Sync. Should even be able to handle a couple of simultaneous 4K to 1080p transcodes.

          • @hankbiggums: This!

I specifically own a i5 8500 based sff pc as home server for the Intel uhd 630 integrated graphics I can pass through to my Plex server. Via quicksync it can do 4k hevc transcoding without breaking a sweat.

        • +1

@roh008 It does sound like maybe your CPU is doing software encoding rather than using the hardware?

          • @irrits: yes it is CPU only no GPU or iGPU. That particular computer has an old GPU in it 560Ti. Based on that I'll switch out the cpus - as I need the transcoding power of the intel chip on my plex server and the 1660 super GPU for upstairs.
            i5 9500/1660Super with the Ryzen 5 3600/560Ti

            • @roh008: @roh008 Sorry, I meant that your 3600 should very easily be able to handle 4K HDR to 1080. There is a setting somewhere that you are missing to make the 3600 CPU use its own hardware transcoding abilities. The Ryzen 5 3600 is newer and more powerful than the intel 8500, and it has the required transcoding abilities to do what you want it to

              • @irrits: the Ryzen 5 3600 doesn't have a iGPU so can't do 'hardware' I don't think and the 560Ti is not able to do (too old).

                • @roh008: The 3600 has no igpu but the cpu has all the required hardware support to transcode. If you have x264 or x265 media files then you should have no issues using the 3600 for transcoding 4K to 1080. Are you using plex? And do you have the plex pass to enable hardware transcoding? If so, that’s all you should need.

                  • @irrits: Yes, i have Plex pass - when i select hardware transcoding - and check the dashboard it doesn’t show ‘hw’ apparently it should. Always maxs out at 100%. I believe it is due to me having a GPU plugged in that the CPU ‘hardware transcoding’ is not working properly.
Do you think this could be the case?

                    • +1

@roh008: I’ve done a few Google searches and I think I’m mistaken, and you’re correct. Hardware transcoding would require an igpu or a dedicated video card. Apologies for that. But on the other hand reddit is full of threads with people happily using Ryzen 3600 CPUs to transcode multiple streams in software mode, so I still wonder if there’s something you can do to reduce the CPU usage with your existing setup. This thread looks good to start with. Good luck!

    • +1

Great. Was using an 8th gen CPU for years. Only just upgraded to a slightly more power efficient CPU 3 months back

    • +6

It's basically THE bang for buck machine for a Plex Server. A special note - should you wish to transcode several video streams or HEVC/4K video formats, then Plex Pass is a MUST. The free version will not allow you to utilise hardware transcoding. :)

    • Would this with a NAS hard drive enclosure connected be good to have 3 or 4 drives in RAID5?

      Something like this?
      https://www.qnapshop.com.au/qnap-tr-004-4-bay-das-no-disk-ha…

I want media server for music and 4k transcoding.

    • +3

Thanks everyone who responded. Just purchased. Excited to get my first plex server up and running!

  • +1

Love my micro version with 8500t. Can decode 4k 60hz in 1-2ms using moonlight. I Stream my PC games to the TV. I've since upgraded the wifi chip to ax210 with bt5.2 for about $25.

    • That is awesome. What is your networking situtation like? I guess you use wifi for the receiving PC, what about the PC running the games?

      • +1

Ethernet 15m to router then wifi to micro pc 5m away and get 3-5ms delay pretty stable.
Have also tested ethernet direct gaming pc to micro pc 1-2ms delay.
With Just wifi I get 4-12ms delay so a bit unstable but still fine.
In a rental with 4 housemates so I try not to leave ethernet cable on the floor.
My router is tri-band so I have a separate channel for streaming games to micro pc and VR headset.

  • Pls noted that you can't install LP GPU on this thing

    • +2

      I'm pretty sure a RX 6400 will fit fine as it's a single-slot card.

      • Sorry I meant dual slot ones like 1050Ti and 1650 and RTX A2000 LP thanks to its stupid pcie layout design, whereas HP elitedesk G4/G5 does support such.

        • I just found out the hard way with a Prodesk G4 too. Damnit

      • Do you have any PC which may hold RTX1080 2 slot GPU?

  • +1

Are you likely to have any micro FF any time soon @calmago?

  • The specs say Optical NIL but the image shows an Optical drive?

    • I have a 7050 in the same form factor. It has the plastic slot where the optical drive could go, but no button on it, just a smooth plastic cover that looks the same. You'd imagine these would be similar and just have the cover over the slot.

      • Yep. If you're lucky they'll have a 2.5" or 3.5" mount behind the cover plate.

If not, you may need to get a power splitter and gaffer tape to strap an additional drive, should you wish to use one for more storage.

  • When these codes come up do they work on all/few PCs or just the one advertised ?

    • Never mind, just checked out site. 10% off your order

  • +1

I got a 7050 i5 7500 with 16 gig ram and a 256 gig SSD for $206. Trying to figure out if I have remorse for getting that instead of this deal, but I don't think so for the extra $60 - should be quite capable for doing HA, file server and other lightweight home server task stuff.

    • +1

It’s fine, have had both gens and they’re both very snappy (overkill) for what you have in mind.

Gen 8 will be a little more futureproof regarding transcoding and Win11 support, if you care about that.

      • +1

Thanks! I largely direct play to my Shield Pro so transcoding isn't a huge concern for me. So yeah it's probably overkill to run a few simple tools and controllers

        • +2

More than enough for this. 👍 Enjoy what you bought.

  • Sold. Replacing RPi as Plex/NZB.

  • Would this thing run docker? I’m looking for a machine to leave on to run Plex meta manager.

    • +1

Easily run docker. I would probably recommend to format to Ubuntu server or something and install docker + portainer. You can still use docker in Windows but I think it runs much better in Linux.

  • Noob question
Guys can I put two 3.5” 10TB in the tower to run free NAS .
    Thank you

    • would like to know this as well

  • Great deal, and just what I've been looking for.

I've purchased 3 times from ACT before. Always get great condition kit.

    • @EspressoDan could you share what model SSDs they included with your units?

I've emailed them to ask but they said they can't tell me because it varies, which is understandable.

I'm just trying to work out whether the SSDs they typically use are good enough (reliable, not so concerned about performance), or whether I should be aiming to replace them upon arrival (in which case I'll go for the 128GB SSD models).

  • Can anyone recommend the best way to hook up a shit ton of storage to this for 4k transcoding through a plex server? Any hard drive recommendations?

    • +1

Go back in time and buy an 18tb Ironwolf from that insane Amazon Seagate deal

  • +1

I've upgraded the graphics on my 7060 sff to a GT1030 low profile card. The internal PCI-e x16 slot on the mobo is located on the edge of the board up against the power supply. You can just fit a GT1030 with a fan on it or you can run a passive cooling heatsink model in the central PCI-e x4 slot. The GT1030 is electrically x4 anyways and runs fine in the smaller 4x slot. Having only a 200w power supply in these pretty much limits it to 35w or below cards.

  • How will AOE2:DE run on this? Currently running the game on my dell xps 13 intel i5 8250u 8gb ram intel uhd 620 graphics. Laptop runs hot and the fans are very noisy and game can be slightly laggy in 4v4 multiplayer.

I was comtemplating getting another deal which will run me around $1200, but aoe2 is the only game I play and don't have much desire to play any other games. The 3060ti and bunch of rgb doesn't seem to be worth it, right?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • +1

This would run it just fine if you add a dGPU. It won't be a much better experience if you just use the onboard graphics in this PC. Even a low profile GT 1030 would work fine, I'm not sure though what you can and can't fit into this thing though.

  • Can anyone recommend a wifi card to buy with this? Cheers

  • Damn, I just ordered it and realised that it doesn’t have Wi-Fi. Any simple way around this or should I just get a refund?

    • +1

You could buy a cheap wifi dongle for like $15-$20 or a pcie one and install it in the system itself - I assume there would be a spare, capable slot inside.

      • And also need a low profile bracket as well. Most are full height

        • Good point. Low profile network card to fit SFF

  • +3

A few of notes from my experience with these machines (I have this exact model, plus I've had a 3040 and 7040) - and generally this CPU and design is bulletproof and offers great performance.
    1) I bought a TT15C SD card reader using an ebay coupon, and it's easy to fit. Just ensure your front panel has the slot (e.g. listing https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364075227862). They're also on AliExpress, but it was easiest to make an offer on ebay.
    2) I fitted a XFX Speedster SWFT105 Radeon RX 6400 graphics card - and that's worked well in the (single) slot next to the powers supply - leaving the other slot free for a WiFi card (WiFi 6E PCE AXE3000 from a previous deal here).
    3) Corsair Vengeance LPX DIMM RAM modules fit fine, but Crucial Ballistix DIMMs are a couple of millimetres too tall. I have a DVD drive installed - if you don't, and are willing to completely remove the internal SSD/HDD tray, you may be able to install taller RAM modules.

    • Do you have the exact link for WiFi 6E PCE AXE3000? Doesn't it need a low profile bracket? Cheers

      • the gpu he put in is single slot.

  • OOS?

Wanting to order 5 before EOFY, what's the difference between https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/dell-optiplex-7… & https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/dell-optiplex-7… except for the HDD size? What does SFF mean?

    • SFF = small form factor

  • All gone!

  • any more like this OP?

  • +1

Mine arrived yesterday - Windows has the hardware tied to Microsoft intune management for a university and the thing has auto-enrolled as soon as it went online, and is forcing me to login with a 'work or school' account of that university.

Also it's quite scratched and not "Grade A" like the listing says. I don't think ACT have done enough enough QA on these before sending them out.

I've put in a warranty request, hopefully @Calmago can help me out.

    • +2

I had the same thing, I rang the support and they asked me to send it back

      • Hmmm that doesn't bode well. I assuming the whole batch is from the same source and I have yet to receive mine

        • I've also had an issue, tried a clean install of Windows 11 and found out about the Microsoft Intune Management as mentioned by @SelfInflicted
Now I can't even get past the 'Setting up for work or school' screen, can't get to Windows desktop at all. Very frustrating, going to have to contact support tomorrow

          • +1

@matt0: Annoying to have this issue, but I had a good response from ACT support. Got a return auspost label and sent it back today already. I expected they'd be out of stock and refund me, but getting a replacement sent so that's a positive.

            • +1

@SelfInflicted: Got mine today and luckily didn't have the same issue. Came well packed and in excellent condition! Happy camper - thanks Calmago!

  • +1

Just a few points from a happy customer.
    Arrived quickly and well packaged.
Opened up to install a shucked 18tb drive, very clean inside, drive install was a breeze.
Nuked SSD and installed fresh Win10 via USB, auto activated as Win10 pro.
Up and running headless as a file/Plex server, working great.
PMS has just had an update fixing hardware transcoding on a headless system. Great timing as I was trying to figure why this wasn't working right using the iGPU.
