I have the MFC-L3750CDW, exact same printer as this but slightly faster at 24ppm vs 22ppm for this model. It has been a great printer the past 2 years. Very fast and toner seems to last. Super quiet and fast warmup too. Cheap compatible toner available on eBay for sub $70 for a set of 4 toners.

    • +5

Recent review on Amazon claims this printer blocks generic toner after recent update.

      • +22

Never update firmware on the printer and newer chips on generic toners stops this.

        • +1

Newer generic able to bypass new firmware restriction?

        • This ++++++

          • +1

@tsk2: Am interested in this but not if I'm forced to pay $400-$500 for the toner.
Can someone link to the generic toners that work and how do you stop future updates from potentially blocking them.
Will you loose any functionality or security features by not updating the firmware.

            • +6

@kmp: I buy them from Aussie Toner on eBay but FIRST THING I did when I got my printer 18-24 months ago was disable auto FW update. Third party toner manufacturers keep updating their chips so just send an email regarding the model and FW you have to each third party Toner seller and ask them if it's compatible, most are happy to advise you.

              • @Dollar Dreamer: What's FW, sorry?

                • @virhlpool: Firmware

                  • @Dollar Dreamer: Ok. And how do you disable FW update.. Can it be done through printer or the laptop in the same network?

                    • +6

@virhlpool: Through the Printers own Menu display screen. See this video for a guide, most Brother printers have the same Menu system but it might not be exact but the video link will give you a sense as to where the auto FW update Menu is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1MxX8aZjbw

                      • +1

@Dollar Dreamer: Hmm.. Thanks. I checked my MFC-L3750CDW printer's firmware, which is the latest (1.60) as I seem to have updated it when prompted a while ago and it's beyond the trouble-maker 1.59 version as I read on internet. The generic toner cartridges are still working perfectly but it may mean that either my cheap cartridges are compatible with the latest firmware or the problem is near and due any time. Or maybe the issue comes up only when you put the new cartridges (or power on/off) and not otherwise? Let me know if someone has any nerd insights so that I can be prepared. haha

PS: The main firmware is ZC and Sub1 is 1.60.

                        • @virhlpool: I bought one yesterday and it is also on 1.60 but the main firmware is ZB

                          • @DanielP2: Please confirm when you replace your cartridges if the printer works with the generic ones.

                            • @virhlpool: With the amount of printing i do that will be in 10 years :D

              • @Dollar Dreamer: Thanks…..now I just need to find out what firmware these units have installed on them I guess.

Do you loose any functionality or security features by not updating the firmware.

                • +9

@kmp: No. These printers are robust and well engineered from day 1 to function. FW updates is almost exclusively done to block 3rd part Toner manufacturers. Most printers are a loss maker or low margin business for manufacturers, they make their $$$ through a repeat business model of people having to keep buying overpriced toners / inks and 'manufactured' failure date to serviceable parts. Going on for decades. It's an amazing business model. Printer manufacturers go out of their way to block third party ink / toner manufacturers as it's a threat to this decades old business model. Almost Apple like evil levels of precise psychological engineering.

                  • +1

@Dollar Dreamer: Thanks so much for taking the time to reply…Think I'll grab one

                • +1

                  @kmp: 1.60 and ZB

    • I got the 3770CDW for $499 2 years ago and idk why I paid so much extra for it.

      • +14

Yours does auto duplex on scanning, handy feature.

The 3750CDW only does it on printing

        • +9

It’s a real deal breaker too if you want to do anything double sided.

Unless you enjoy flipping the stack, doing a fresh scan, merging PDFs, and rearranging the pages…

          • +4

@Bedgrub: If you have their app it deals with the merge

            • +5

@cheaptech20: Quality of life stuff. Duplex scan to email…not stuffing around with additional software

            • @cheaptech20: Hey @Bedgrub, can you expand on this app info and how it works please?

        • +3

Yeap. This was the only reason I got the 3770 over the cheaper ones.

      • +3

I paid $445 for my 3770CDW a few years back and it had been great. The double sided auto document scanner is excellent

        • It's huge time saver. My favourite thing of my 3770. Still have to use the flatbed for those thermal receipts though.

I scan everything now. Never lose another document or receipt again.

          • @Chris McMahon: When scanning receipts, I can't find the option to do selective scanning. Meaning scan only the area that is covered by the receipt - something similar to what Epson scanners offer.
With my 3770, I basically have a whole A4 paper with the receipt on it.
Is that how you scan on your receipts as well?

            • +1

@ar7ist: I have a few shortcuts set up to handle different receipts.

              1. Colour Multi-page (for receipts that have multiple pages - including two sided receipts).
              2. Grayscale Thermal (for those thermal printed receipts)
              3. Colour Image

I use the document feeder for all A4 stuff and use shortcut 1. It handles everything automatically and saves a multipage pdf as a single file.

For those long thermal receipts I use shortcut 2, which I've set as an enhanced contrast, grayscale jpg file. I then go in and crop them down in a simple editor like IrfanView, but generally only if I need to send them to anyone.

The third shortcut is when I know I want to edit the image afterwards and it saves it as a jpg instead of a pdf. Useful if I want to remove something from the receipt, or it's so bad I have to use photoshop to make it readable.

I haven't come across automatic selective scanning on the 3770. If you need it, just default to saving as jpg files and crop it manually.

      • +1

nb: ppls who require auto duplex scanning should ensure it can do that on a single pass.. ie the adf doesn't have to turn the paper over.

my mfc has to flip the paper.. which isn't great for old documents with staple holes/tears/creases etc.

      • Camelx3 has this pegged at it's lowest of $535.

I can see EcoTech is selling this for $499 (free delivery). Might talk to family's Finance Department.

        • StaticIce is a good IT goods price comparator. It's not just limted to Amazon like Camelx3. EcoTech does seem like the best deal inc delivery.

      • I price beat 3770CDW at OW for $437.95 2.5 years ago. It has been great, If the toner level runs low, you can reset the toner level readings, which will allow you to use it for an extra couple of months.

    • +2

We ran into this with the 3230 and the DCP-L3510cdw and HL-L3270CDW

Was a massive PITA. We tried all the online tips like replacing the cartridge batteries. Eventually we bought new third party black cartridges (as they do seem to serve as the gateway) and they worked.

I'd recommend holding onto your original black cartridge that came with your printer for authentication. It may ensure at least your colour cartridges aren't rejected.

    • I have one of this and I agree with the comments

    • +3

Only Black …. well Cyan, Magenta or Yellow as well - Just add water

  • Very happy with this printer. I've set up a bunch of shortcut functions on the display so family members can email a scan or scan to individual OneDrive folders. I believe two sided scanning can be done in software using the included licence for PaperPort. Not tried this yet. Single sided stacks through the document feeder has been faultless.

    • @muststop please confirm that duplex scanning is possible?! Do you have to manually flip sides and did it auto collate pages in correct order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc) or did it scan odd, even (1, 3, 5, 7 etc) and you had to manually collate?? Many thanks!! 💯🔥

      • +1

Batch scan odd pages. Batch scan even pages. The software merges. Done.

        • Ah that's what I was missing, the software … Is licensing included?? Or you need a subscription???

          • +1

            @db2k: Software is free.

            • @CocaKoala: What software? Kofax PaperPort seems to be a paid software? Epson's native scan software doesn't support this type of duplex scanning last I checked?

              • @theguwithnoname: PaperPort — it is included with most (all?) Brother printers.

  • Anyone has this printer? Can you review the refill process?
On my cheap 23xx HL I can just open the cartridge , fill powder then do a soft reset.

I am sure the colour ones look smaller and may not feature a cap for refilling

    • +1

Refilling is not advisable as it's messy and also requires a dust free clean room. Risk of poor print quality is high when refilling yourself. Just buy the re-manufactured or 3rd party toners on eBay / online ink toner outlets. It's already cheap enough.

  • +1

I am looking for a replacement for our MFC-9340CDW in 2016 - we use the scanner as often as the printer, so occasionally the duplex scan comes in handy.
This is a good price but will likely go for the model with 2 sided scanning

    • I have the 9340CDW too, hasn't skipped a beat… Why do you want to replace it?

      • The waste box just stopped everything - I tried emptying it as a workaround and it was a bit finicky. Replacement on the way from Amazon JP.
The print output is looking very dodgy - I think it needs new drum(s)

        • +1

Also had to replace the wastebox from Amazon

          • @R3XNebular: I tried following this in the meantime while waiting for amazon JP.
Gloves, mask and lots of butchers paper and bags to catch everything, and some wipes to clean everything afterwards were needed.
            Toner can go everywhere.

It did not seem particularly "full" but there was a fair amount of toner in there.
Also it is tricky to put the axles and seals back.

It is much simpler to reset the switch though, as this did not require opening of the waste box.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvO1H0kyx5A

      • +1

I've got the 9140CDN from 2013, using the generic printec imaging cartridges from inkstation. I hit the same toner waste box full message. I manually disassembled/emptied it, then did the hack from youtube to disable the detection and it worked perfectly.

The only thing I dislike about the MFC is the size of the thing. It is massive - probably 45cm cubed. The scanning is also slow and is a flatbed mechanism.

If you deal with lots of paper, I highly recommend the Fujitsu FI series of scanners with ADF. Magnitudes faster - particularly with duplex, can take all sizes of paper (i.e bunnings receipts, bank statements, etc). You can also get ones with both ADF and also flatbed like the FI 7280 - someone is selling one of these on the goldcoast on FB marketplace for $110. These cost $2000+ easy back in the day. Speed is crazy - https://youtu.be/_4mW4jbD8D8

    • I also have one of these and can attest to it being very good. I too have prob had it for about 8 years.

It's colour printing has gone pretty bad though with lines through it, not sure why…

      • +1

Don't know too much about last printers, but check the lifespan on the drums and the fuser, might need replacement.

Also I think there's a calibration procedure in there somewhere which I suppose you could try.

        • Thank you, I appreciate you not just telling me to google it ;-)

      • +1

Yea a calibration and replacing the toners fixed it for me

        • Thank you!

  • +1

Dont update the firmware for this. It blocked my AussieToners set of cartridges.

    • +1

If you contact the shop they might send you a new set of chips for the printer that work with the new firmware version.

As a rule, don't update the firmware unless you have a reason to.

    • Is it possible to remove chip off genuine cartridge and put on non genuine cartridge.

      • I thought the chips also set themselves when toner is empty, so can’t be used again.

        • +1

They can be reset. My printer was reporting as empty. Reset it and been printing again, doesn't look even faded yet

          • @DoesntEvenMatter: Thanks.
Ive only ever used compatible ink jet carts with chips.

  • Can it do duplex scanning and printing?

    • +1

No duplex scanning from my understanding. It needs a software and can donit that way manually

      • Could it do duplex printing?

        • +1

          Yes

Or buy the 3770 if you want single pass duplex scanning

          • @daft009: But that printer is like $500, is it worth paying that much more just for single pass scanning? I think I'd rather pay for straight path printing.

            • @AustriaBargain: Depends on your use case.
If you're gonna do lots of scanning then I think it's worth it.
              If not then perhaps not

      • Any suggestions on duplex scan that works seamlessly with brother MFCs? I still manually sort the the odd and even pages…

  • Haven't bought a printer in many years as I've always bought entry level cheap printers which last a year and then start printing awefully before it's time to chuck them out.

Does a printer like this continue to print well if they're used intermittently? Do they require servicing?

    • +4

I don't own this particular printer however I do own another brother mono printer and previously owned a brother colour printer for several years and both have been excellent for intermittent use, they don't suffer clogging like inkjets, the only issue I found with my older colour laser was is didn't like moving homes too much. To be fair it moved interstate twice, printing was never quite perfect after that. Artifacts.

    • +1

Some printers have a minimum monthly duty cycle, where they recommend you printer say 10,000 pages per month in order for it to run properly. This one doesn't say anything about that, you should be fine. Just know how heavy it is, over 20kg.

  • +1

Literally was about to buy this on the commercial site for $343. Thanks OP!

addit: website seems to be having a fit. although my internet has been crap lately …

    • +1

Website is freezing due to all the OZB ppl buying

      • Just drove to a store since I was driving by. The lady said she could give me a "deal" for $315?? I said with 15% off it should be $313!

Printed a test photo from my phone via wireless and pretty impressed!

Turned of FW auto update first thing out of the box - was pretty easy.

  • Once left on the net:
It will find and update firmware without asking you!
    Gone are cheap refills
So: Plug in on usb cable for printing then unplug!
Or donate to Gerry, get a 2 color printer that prints both Black and white!

    • +8

Incorrect. You can disable the auto FW update in the printer menu display. First thing I did when I booted it up. I would advise people to do this before connecting to your Wifi and PC.

      • Like the opposite of running in an engine.
All my 8 HP printers I ever had did this, 7 have been binned, no 8 is now an exhibit.
It started with the Fujitsu: Best printer for a long time, then I had to buy chip inserts for everytime a toner cartridge went in. So I went back to ink for a while.
Then got given an old brother that looked like uneven drum wear. 4 drums and 4 toners later looked near perfect until unplugged. Now got permanent message: No toner.
        Any solution?

  • Can you add a second tray to this?

  • +1

Good guys entire site just went down??

    • not quite. but geez that website is slow

  • Waiting for OfficeWork to match the price.

    • Officeworks don't stock this model. They stock the 3750, which is almost the same but different PPM. So there wont be any price match

  • +1

No stock in Melbourne metro. Nearest one is in Traralgon. Need to pay $26 extra for delivery which makes me step back. Is it still a bargain to pay $340 for this one?

    • There website is broken. I saw this earlier too, then 5 mins ago it was showing stock in Taylors Lakes and Maribyrnong which are my two closest stores.

But then the website crashed at checkout

  • What's the scanner quality like. Got an ancient brother inkjet MFC that I use for scanning far more than printing, but the scanner is atrocious.

  • +3

    their website is a trainwreck

  • +2

    A day after EOFY. Damn.

Good Guys site seems to be very unstable today.

I’ve been holding out for a deal on a 3770 for the duplex scanning, but at this price it’s essentially a $200 premium just for duplex scanning so maybe I’ll just grab one of these

  • +2

FYI not much stock WA and website is dodgy as.
if you arent in a rush for it.. Call your local store even if they are out of stock, they should take your order and apply 15% discount to get it at $313.65 and order you one in, they sent me link over mobile to make payment…

    • That's really helpful.. I did what you advised and it worked for me too!

  • -2

People still scan? I thought the phone will do this better with camera now adays.

  • does it comes with toner?

    • Printers usually come with "starter" cartridges, with a thousand or so pages worth of ink/toner. No idea if this one comes with full or "starter" carts. But they always come with something. And surely the drum is full, if it uses one…

  • Laser printers are meant to be cost effective and reliable, but I've unfortunately had non-stop issues with this model over the years. Maybe I just got a dud, but I have seen some of these issues online too:

    • Toners not being detected by printer due to their batteries constantly going flat. Turning printer off at the wall seems to make this happen more often. While the batteries are cheap, I only found them online and they're fiddly to replace. Also if it doesn't work, needs new toners which cost: $30 each online, $160 local.

    • Printer reported full toner waste bin within a year of purchase. Cost: $30 online, $60 local.

    • Red drum needed replacement due to printing a vertical red line on every page. Cost: $130 online, $300 local.

After a few years of seemingly never being able to print stuff right when I really needed to, I recently gave up and got one of their Inkvestment printers instead. I know ink has its downsides but I'm just happy to not have to mess around with toners, batteries, bins or drums.

  • Got one, thanks OP!

  • +1

    website is literally broken
