Worth checking dual deal chromecast and storage- received email " Upgrade to a Premium 2 TB plan with annual billing and get a Chromecast with Google TV (4K)¹ (retail value A$99.00). We'll even cover the delivery" all for $124.99.

    • They're not honouring this. Out of stock direct from Google.

      • I'd be interested to read more, do you have a source for that?

      • +1

Looks like they're back in stock. I just placed my order.

  • If you get the HD, make sure you put it on a smart power board so you can turn the power socket off and on again remotely when it stops responding almost daily.

    • +3

Is this caused by certain TVs or a bad batch or something? This has never happened with my one.

      • +7

Never had an issue with my HD or 4K versions.

    • Yeah I have this problem too, for some reason the HDMI or power Connection just disappears day after I've used it so I have to unplug it every time, no idea if it's the TV or what.

    • My HD suffers from some apps stops working. Never had issues with the 4K… On the same TV so it's not the TV.

      .

      • google should have release a more powerful 4k version
        rather than weaker HD version..

google scrimping on even cheaper specs
just means people will eventually be turn off by how laggy their device gets..

people who own google TV and then bought Apple TV
says how smoother and better the Apple TV is.

        • I'm quite sure they are releasing a new version soon.

    • +1

Never had an issue where I've had to do a hard power reset. Occasionally do a soft reset through the system menu, but that's about it.

      • Had my first hard reset last week after about 2.5yrs of daily use. Maybe 3 soft resets but that was to resolve app specific playback issues.

    • I have the HD, never had any issues with it?

    • Mine does this as well. The pairing with my TV remote can be buggy as well

    • +1

      never happened with me either

  • For Chromecasting only: I wish they would bring back the Ultra 4K, instead of this garbage loaded with Google TV. Chromecasting to things that run Android TV (like these Chromecast with Google TV devices) absolutely sucks, requires many Chromecast attempts, takes forever for the apps to open and start streaming (that's if they start the stream and don't just open to the app home screen), and doesn't allow guests to Chromecast (you need to be logged into the same account on the device and your phone in order to successfully cast). The original Chromecast devices, as long as you were on the same network, anyone could cast to it and apps would open up and start streaming very quickly.

If you don't care about casting, and just want a cheap smart TV experience where you have access to the Google Play Store on the device and install traditional Android TV apps, then this device is fine. It just sucks for casting.

    • +3

I will never understand why people like casting things. Just use the app on the TV.

      • Same, i just looked for a binge app on my lg tv and there isnt one available. I think im supposed to search then cast from my phone.
Just seems like a backwards step to me after using an Android tv box.

        • Damn what do I get? I have og chrome cast that allows anyone in same network cast to it

        • That’s not at all what I meant. I meant why cast stuff from your phone. Android TV boxes are much better than what built into a TV.

      • +8

I will never understand why people like casting things

It is easier to find stuff on your phone cast it from youtube to the TV
It is also easier to scrub the timeline with the casting app.
You could also be in the middle of watching it and want to watch it on the bigger TV screen.

Just use the app on the TV.

The TV youtube app usually sucks, UI not great
and using remote control to use the youtube app on the TV sucks.
Find stuff on the TV app also sucks (with the onscreen keyboard)

The youtube TV app can also suddenly just stop playing when an ad comes up.
then you need to restart the app.

        • I agree for YouTube i like my phone but i still can handle the tv YouTube app. I prefer to have both options.

          • @Spendmore: i have been trying to use the youtube tv app
and it is crap experience each time.
When ads come up, the ad would play and then stop playing the video you were watching.
Navigating the youtube TV app with a remote control on the poor UI is not great either.
And I don't bother search for anything in the TV app,
cos you don't want to use the onscreen keyboard with the remote control, it is just bad experience moving from one letter to the next

I just find casting as the easier way to watch youtube on the TV

        • Use voice search

          • @Mozzmanau: there is no voice search in TV youtube app.

that is for the google chromecast + google TV feature.

      • I will never understand why people like casting things. Just use the app on the TV.

        Pawn?

        • I still use chromecast to watch youtube because i can sideload youtube app without ads

      • +1

It is so much more convenient to use the app on your more performant phone and your phones keyboard than these cheap devices, guests are able to cast things, and a big one which has affected me a lot is if you move in to a shared house but you have an established profile (watch history, etc) on a streaming service, you can't use it!

      • -1

i never cast, why would i hammer my mobile phone battery when the google tv with wifi has access to streaming services and free to air TV channels also stream ……only thing you might want to cast is videos from your phone that people don’t want to watch “here is my room when i was in bali, here are my kids getting best player award, here is me drinking beer, etc “

        • When you cast most things (like YouTube etc) you're not using your phone as a relay and the stream data doesn't go through the phone. You're actually passing a stream uri and session info to the Chromecast and it is accessing the data directly from the internet.

Initiating a stream from most sources via a phone should have basically no impact on the phone's battery, unless you're screen mirroring or something like that.

          • @Mentok: yeah I once started casting match replay from AFL app on me phone and had to leave home on an errand, I thought it would stop

but no, the family just continued watching it while I was away lol

            great technology

      • I use a chromecast to airplay bridge so I can play music on random TVs throughout the house and garage from my phone. That’s the only use case I have really.

      • Many TVs either don't get the app or the TV OS sucks or the app is out of date. I prefer one consistent OS across my 3 different TVs, one of which isn't a smart TV.

      • Not all TVs have all apps, and when they do, the use experience is not always as good as the mobile app.

    • was considering this for the casting as one of the main usage
since not really interested in the google paid tv/movie etc..
didn't know casting was shit on this device.

do you own the 4k or HD version that has this issue?

and doesn't allow guests to Chromecast

not allowing guest to do this is actually good
since you could be watching something and don't want anyone to just cast over your own videos.

      that would be annoying

    • Could try this option. Removes the TV style content.

      https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/11587567?hl=en

      Cast using cast moderator
Cast content to Chromebooks and other devices

      What is cast moderator?
As a Chrome user, such as a teacher, you can use cast moderator as a casting solution in the classroom. By connecting a cast receiver to a shared screen, such as a TV or projector, you and your students can both mirror or share a single Chrome tab wireless simply by connecting with a code.

  • Netflix now supports frame rate matching on Chromecast:

    https://9to5google.com/2023/06/30/netflix-frame-rate-matchin…

  • Does this allow faster play back speeds? My doesn't on Chromecast 3.

    • Yep up to 2x like normal. Got it for this purpose.

  • What's the cheapest way to get the remote control only.
Mine just disconnects itself. Anyone got similar problem?

    • my remote went flakey, took it apart and cleaned it, was full of stuff from being used while eating food, all good after the clean.

    • Warranty?

    • You can you the home app as remote.

    • check google store?
      ebay
      buy HD version

  • Will JB Hi-fi or Office Work price match a deal with a code?

  • Can you walk into the store and get this deal or online only?

    • Edit: Sale is in-store.

Chromecast was up the front desk as they say all the 14 year olds grab them on five finger discount.

  • +1

Amazon Fire TV 4k Max at similar price seems so much better than this given some recent user issues with chromecast

  • Is it just me? Seems their site is like a snail…

    • It's not just you. I've been trying all day and getting nothing.

  • Good timing, bought one to go with the recently delivered Blitzwolf-V5

  • +1

I just switched from Chromecast to Apple TV after my chromecast just started getting way to laggy and the remote started dying and playing up. Currently in a warranty claim but have bought an Apple TV in the meantime.

Personally the Apple TV is miles better and I would recommend spending the extra bit if you use your tv for streaming and watching videos.
    Just my 2 cents

    • +1

problem with Apply TV is there is no freedom to install your own apps other than ones allowed on the apple store.
if apple allowed sideloading (or forced to by EU) then many more would get it.

did you claim warranty from local store or bought from Google?
      is yours 4k version?

Google wants to target lower price market
but as a result they need to scrimp on the cheapest spec vs Apple TV
so in the end people will get frustrated with the lag and may not buy another Google chromecast.

    • With apple tv, can you cast android app similar to google chromecast?

      Thanks

  • My TCL C835 has been getting glitch lately, so getting this. But it turns out the Logitech k380 BT keyboard is not compatible?

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    • the google TV on TCL is crap and glitchy?
or just the keyboard is not working?

do you know how much storage it has?

Try download android app remote control.

      • Woops I should've been clearer.

Glitchy Google TV on TCL, therefore I bought this ccwgtv.

The keyboard issue is specifically with the chromecast device. Apparently a known compatibility issue with ccwgtv for Logitech and Apple keyboards 🤷‍♂️

        • what do you mean by glitchy?
can you upload some video of the issue?

this not good for people that want to use the built in Google TV.
Nowadays it is either Google TV or LG WebOS.
Tizen also still used on Samsung, but I heard the app store is like shutdown.
          Also Tizen is crap OS.

I read that the ccwgtv has issue with laggy
not sure if it is the same issue as glitchy.

          • @pinkybrain: I'll try to replicate it (by using the built in Google TV) and report back on this thread. But might be a while! (happens randomly)

But one of the issues I encountered was what looked like a bootloop. Not that it would show the flash screen but it would black screen then show the skeleton loading of the home page and then rinse and repeat. I would need to power down at the plug and then turn back on.

Another one is when the Netflix app just doesn't work properly when trying to access a profile. I don't remember the specific details on this one however. And this might be purely app specific 🤷‍♂️

For context, I keep the TV powered on at the plug, and only turn off with the remote. It would happen when I turned the TV on with the remote. Not always but those are the circumstances ahah
