Based on the comical and moving # 1 New York Times bestseller, A Man Called Otto tells the story of Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), a grumpy widower who is very set in his ways. Why is he getting access to my account?

  • +6

    A great movie!

    • +2

…but is it a great deal?

From the fiasco from last month, it caused a bit of a contraversy. Seems that video contents that moves from paid to free, or as free-access, now qualifies as a deal. Not sure what ramifications are there for future good or bad.

Spoiler: If you think this is a great family movie to watch with the kids during the school holidays - be warned, it's probably not. It's heavy/sad and depicts attemped suicide throughout. I assumed given it's upbeat description and the fact it stars Tom Hanks it'd be OK, but I would avoid watching with little ones.

    • +2

Isaac Kappy wasn't a fan of Tom Hanks and probably won't recommend it as a family movie either.

    • -3

Agreed and of course they had to shoehorn 'the agenda' in at one point but thankfully it wasn't 'too' painful but otherwise we enjoyed it.

      • +2

That forced agenda seemed glaringly convenient and unusually out of place.

    • any good movies to watch with the kids during school holidays?

      • +4

        Entirety of House MD

      • +6
        • Thanks @EightImmortals, sounds interesting :)

      • +4

Studio Ghibli. Start with Grave of the Fireflies for a movie you'll only ever watch once.

        • +1

thanks mate I think we already watched it…

        • +1

Or just jump into the deep waters and show them Princess Mononoke! /s

          • @pizzaguy: thanks will check this one out!

            • @homersyd: Ohh, please be careful, it was kinda joke to point out that Ghibli is not always for kids. Princess Mononoke is M-reated. /s was for sarcasm.

              • +1

@pizzaguy: Agreed. Thought all Studio Ghibli movies are for kids. Watched My Neighbour Totoro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. Those are good for kids (how old is yours?) But Princess Mononoke is not. It included violence (someone cut a soldier's hand if I remembered correctly).

              • +1

@pizzaguy: oh hahaah didnt understand what /s meant…lol thanks

        • +2

Start with Grave of the Fireflies

This is a joke everyone. Most adults and ghibli fans regret watching this very sad movie.

          • +1

@serpserpserp: Regret watching a sad movie?
            Why?

          • @serpserpserp:

Most adults and ghibli fans regret watching this very sad movie.

Very true. It's important that movies never make you feel sad. Like most adults and Pixar fans, I also regretted watching the opening scene of Up.

          • @serpserpserp: No they don't, it's a good movie, just not so much for little kids.

        • +1

I still feel sad whenever I think of Grave of the Fireflies. Great movie, but jesus what a series of gut-punchs.

          …rice ball

        1. Saving Private Ryan (great to learn some WW2 history and teamwork under adversity)
        2. Mortal Kombat (2021 version)(great to promote active lifestyle through martial arts)
        3. Sausage Party (great in teaching people to respect food in a funny comedic setting)
        4. Aliens (great at teaching human anatomy and survival skills)
    • +2

I watched this with a 6 year old and a 9 year old. Depends on your kids. We had a good chat about feelings and they enjoyed the movie

  • Fantastic movie.

  • +8

The original film on which this is based, "A Man Called Ove" is 99c on iTunes at the moment, if anyone wants to see it instead (it's great, didn't really need a remake).

    • +6

I watched "Another Round" yesterday. It's a Danish movie and is apparently being remade in English. Another great movie that I don't thing needs redoing.

      • +3

Another Round had a very strong subtextual narrative that intersected with the life of Danish Philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (he had the opening quote of the film and was mentioned throughout). If you remake it in any other country, that subtext is lost and was a huge part of the film for me.

      • +4

Hollywood is pretty lazy these days.

      • +6

"Another Round" will be broadcast on SBS next Monday July 10th 12:20am if anyone is interested.

        • Thanks for heads up… Looks like on SBS online now

    • +1

The original is great! Watched it many years ago.
      Haven’t seen this version.

    • i personally preferred the remake. Tom Hanks brings it to a different level

  • +1

    Its on Binge too

  • Good movie. I don't think Hanks has done a movie I didn't like.

    • +2

He was pretty darn terrible in Elvis, but mostly he does good work.

      • You mean his character was terrible or his performance? I liked it.

        • I felt his performance wasn't up to his usual standard. I think he even got a Razzie award for it….

  • Great movie. Overall I found it uplifting.

  • +1

Why does this keep showing up even when I have the options ticked to hide from timeline…

  • -1

    Excellent movie

  • Also on foxtel go (if you have that service)

  • Loved it.

  • +8

My name is Otto. I love to get blotto

    • +1

Came here expecting the movie to be about this.

      • "Man, that is flagrant False Advertising!"

        iykyk

  • Second, Third, Fourth others opinions.. great movie and well worth the watch

  • This movie is just awful - Tom Hanks pretends to be Clint Eastwood but his biases become evident - plot old man becomes reeducated and dies, then helps the marginalised - issac kappy says No.

    • +1

I have no idea what any of this means

      • +5

I had to look it up. Kappy was an actor who would echo and publicly voice conspiracy theories which were dubious at best or debunked at worst. He eventually unfortunately committed suicide. Seemingly mentally unwell and likely under a lot of stress from his life and career.

I don't understand why people take the perspectives of these fringe celebrities seriously, though. These guys spend their lives learning to get attention for their careers and yet some people mistake them for scientists and philosophers who are revealing massive "secrets". It's all a rather unfortunate effect of the internet age and people's susceptibility to such information.

  • +1

On Foxtel it is classed as a comedy…🥴

  • Great movie but I guess as it has all the ingredients of 'wokeness' some would hate it for sure.

  • +1

This film is depressing asf, not what I thought it would be watching the trailer

  • The movie is well written/produced etc but it's a brutally sad movie.

Not for the faint of heart!

  • +1

This is just advertising, not a 'deal'. It's included as part of your Prime subscription.

    • -1

Precisely. Not sure why addition of new content to streaming services should constitute a deal. If that is the case - we're going to see stuff like "oi new season of black mirror is out" etc.
IMHO - posts like this should be relegated to the forums.

      • -1

Agreed. Where is the upvote police?

  • +1

    I enjoyed it

    • +1

Be careful. I got negged for saying I found it uplifting.
