[NSW] 30% off Default Market Offer & No Increase in 2023 @ Globird Energy

2146

As per the title, GloBird currently seems to be the most competitive energy provider (at least in NSW) offering prices 30% lower than the reference price and guaranteeing NO Increase in 2023!

In addition to this, you can also get the following discounts:

  • Further 1% lower with 1% direct debit discount
  • Further 1% lower with 2% pay on time discount

Lastly, you could potentially also get the $50 credit upon joining, see deal here.

Note: The deal may be similar for other states as well but I can't attest so have marked it as NSW only.

Update: There have been reports from users that their rates are different when using a referral link compared to when checked on comparison website. If this applies to you, please ensure that you don't signup with higher rates and instead call up GloBird and ask them to apply the referral manually to their advertised rates. You will have to reach out to your referrer to get their account number etc so that GloBird can manually apply the referral.

PS. Please always check your welcome email as that should have the rates which applies to you. All the best :)

Powershop hiked my rates massively, I’ve since switched to Red Energy and they’re much lower.

      • +1

Same for me. I was with Powershop for 5 months before they increased on 1st July by 30%.

Moved to Tango. Seem to be the cheapest in the market at the moment.

        • Ah nice, I shall have a look. Red informed me that I have been on a seasonal demand tariff since my smart meter was installed last November, yet Powershop have been charging me their flat rate tariff. I suspect they’ve been eating the tariff and passing it onto me with raised rates. Red have told me that they’re going to request the tariff be switched to a flat rate one so fingers crossed the distributor are amenable.

    • Great rate, but need more FIT. I'm with Powershop who just whacked up their prices, and lowered the FIT. Still the FIT @ 0.12 $kWh is a winner . Along as I export 16kWh a day it covers my daily charge (1.9). At 0.05 would need 32 kWh on Globird.
      …think I got that right

      • I am also with Powershop (NSW Flat Rate), but I really had to bring out the spreadsheet using a few bills to compare all the retailers with actual usage and feed in numbers to suit my own situation.

Its the massive whack with the daily fee that actually hurts. And the way FIT are presented - flat rates, X for first XXXkwh etc that make it hard.

A bit of a long process, but I found - not yet made the jump - to TOU with either Simply Energy or PowerShop, I would be out front the most. But, and the big BUT is the peak rates are 74.4c for Simply, and 64.9c for PowerShop. Assuming the weather is fine and my solar covers the PEAK period I'm on a winner as the Off-Peak is around 27c (verse the flat 37c) - but its a big risk if we have a wet and overcast year like the last few.

GloBird per this listing would result in an annual bill of $285 verse Simply and Power at a $130 CR for the year.

        • Highly recommend using PVOutput. Makes calculations like the above pretty trivial.

    • Same boat here. I was with Globird for 6+ months until the FIT dropped/only for first XKwH and moved to Powershop who were more competitive.

Went from $40/mth to -$7 with Powershop however they've just also increased prices… Luckily I received the $75 for using a referral code to join and then someone on ozbargain used my code so I got another $75 referral bonus to help with the increases for a little bit.

For VIC Globird Gas seems much better than Lumo.

But for electricity they are pretty d0gs**t

  • +1

    Any good deals for QLD?

    • NECTR ended up being slightly higher than this, but with a better history of price stability.

    • I did - https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/ - and Globird was the cheapest.
I switched today was with Alinta 28% off, but the prices have skyrocketed.
Their lame 9% discount was still a lot dearer than Globird.

      • This is exactly the same as my situation… switched to GloBird due to Alinta 28% plan price jack.

I just signed up to the "Red Fixed Saver" plan a week ago (no price increases until next year) and these prices from Globird are slightly better. I used a referral number to get a free $25 gift card with red energy (they already sent it to me). Is there any reason I can't change over to Globird now?

  • Do they offer a flat rate if you have a smart meter and are on a Demand tariff or TOU in NSW(given flat rate doesn't exist anymore)?

    • You can still get a flat rate in NSW, just call your retailer and ask to move from a Demand tariff.

      • Strictly speaking, Ausgrid closed all flat rate Tariffs(EA010). New customers with smart meters get put on ToU(EA025) or Demand(EA116). There isn't the option for a flat rate. It's up to the retailer to offer a flat rate but I don't know of any that offer a flat rate when you are on demand or ToU tariff

        • Tou better than demand ? My last bill , I only used 30kwh total peak hour but they charged me 35 dollars for peak + June demand charges . Currently my fit is 15c, will fit change when I switch from demand to tou?

      • How do you know if you are on a demand tariff?

        • Look at your bill in detail. It should show the demand charges.

      • No, Ausgrid won't allow it. Is their excuse.

  • VIC

Shouldve locked in to Tango before end of June, they had pretty decent fixed rates until May 2024, now its meh.

    • I was enjoying Tango low gas rate for a year before they shot up. It was good time.

  • Nice deal but be ready to switch again since they always jack prices

They are jacking mine 30% so I'm moving to Tango

  • +2

GLOSAV plan with Further 1% lower with 1% direct debit discount and Further 1% lower with 2% pay on time discount plus cheaper daily rate works out to be cheaper than the BOOST that is promoted as 30% off the reference rate.

  • +2

Just take care if you use Controlled Load Off Peak 1. Their price for this is very high compared to almost all others. So whilst their Peak, Off Peak, Shoulder rates all look excellent (because they are), for me personally they ended up being more expensive than others

However if prices don't change then they could become more attractive

    • Good call-out, also for people with solar and off-peak (CL) hot-water, may be cheaper moving from CL and running your unit during solar hours. Otherwise you export for peanuts but may CL pricing.

    • What is the definition of controlled load peak 1 (what times)? My AGL bill shows 'controlled load 1' and kwh is about 80% of the kwh of my general usage.

      • Usually between 3pm to 9pm Mon to Sun however best to double-check with them.

      • Its 24/7, usually it's your hot water heater. Sometimes people have their pool filter to it as well

    • Post Code 2207.

Wow. CL1 is 10c more than most retailers.

  • I signed up with Globird about 2 montha ago (after doing the $250 VIC energy comparison). Showed a big discount over AGL.

Received this from them last week:

    Estimated annual cost difference (Power)
Estimated annual cost of current rates = $1177.71
Estimated annual cost of new rates = $1489.13
    Estimated annual difference = $311.42

I'm going to be moving again. Anyone know who are cheap again, more importantly those who have already set their price increases for a fair comparison.

    • +1

Email Globird and ask to be put on their lowest tariff. They responded in 36 hours for me and moved me.

      • Can confirm. After a few months they did a HUGE jack. I complained, now I’m back down to a slight increase for daily charge and lower for time of use charge.

Honestly these crazy changing prices need to be fined heavily. It’s ridiculous I need to constantly be battling to not get ripped off…

      • Same here -> @markb28 - feel free to check my comment above, about the new rates they put me on upon emailing them.

    • Wtf got the same email and same price to the cent as you!??

  • +1

Thanks a lot OP. These guys work out to be significantly cheaper than AGL who i switched to recently. Moved both of my GAS and Electricity with these guys

  • Where is their Solar feed in rate?

  • Where do we put the referral?

    • I think you sign up by visiting via a referral link.
Use the OZBargain referral thingy to get one.

Energex/Qld geez I wonder what their reference/lazy tax prices are, because apparently the following is 24% below them

    Before Discount After Discount

    Daily Charge
    $/Day 1.12200 1.08830
    Peak usage
    $/kWh 0.33000 0.32010
    Off peak usage
    $/kWh 0.21780 0.21130
    Shoulder usage
    $/kWh 0.21780 0.21130
    Standard Solar Feed in
    $/kWh 0.05000 0.05000

Even my too lazy to change Energy Australia prices (with 14% discount) are

    Daily 1.08 0.93
    All 0.235 0.202
    Solar 0.066 0.066

    • How did you get 14% discount? They offered me 2% to stay but the revised rates were still higher than others so I switched to nectr.

      • I was on the 14% last year for their 12mth fixed rates.
I just used chat & asked for the retentions team. Who said they can't change the rates, but they offered the 14% discount.

        • Great work, I was on their 12mth fixed plan too but they only offered 2% discount off their new rates.

        • Mate, how did you get hold of them? I am trying their 13 number few times since last 1 week everyday but never managed to speak them. Noone picks the phone.

          • @toyapple9:

I just used chat & asked for the retentions team

as in webchat. The bot asks what you want to discuss, you say "retentions team"
you get asked if you want to chat about disconnecting/moving/changing providers. Yep.
Then select move to another provider…. suddenly your wait time is 5mins :-)

            • @M00Cow: Thanks mate. Will try this option :-)

              • @toyapple9: Mate did you have any luck? Curious if I just got someone who hates his job.

                • @xdigger: naah mate..no luck in getting anyone for globird and sumo

  • +2

nice, plugging in the numbers it would have been slightly cheaper than the pre-price rise cost of my last Red bill, and remarkably cheaper than current rates. Im churning and will keep an eye out for when they try raising prices

    • +2

It will all be sorted by Globird. Hope they do a mid billing cycle transfer. Dont want to be stuck paying higher prices for 3 months with AGL

      • +2

GloBird does NOT charge a Special Meter Read fees for the FIRST read attempt for new customers signing up.

Not sure if that means they initiate the read for you or not, but at least they're eating the cost. (Which would be required to transfer mid-cycle on older meters)

      • Exited out of AGL quickly and now shopping around because of ridiculous rates. There was about 3 days of charges after initiating the transfer.

    • +2

U dont have to do anything. The transfer is initiated by the new provider.

  • Is this for new joiners only? Or safe to assume no price rises for existing customers as well?

  • Can someone here currently with GlowBird refer me?

    • +3

I can but its fairer to click on the referral link

    • +3

Use the referral link and it'll pick a random person to get the link from.
Any links posted in the comments will be deleted and it's unfair for one person to profit multiple times with their link - imo

  • +1

Anyone who clicked on the Sumo referral link above (unpublished) check with Sumo directly,
The direct with Sumo rates were better for the Solar (Energex/Qld).
    Referral vs Sumo
    Feedin 10c vs 12c
    Usage 21.89 vs19.58
    Demand 16.50 vs 15.40

Interesting how different retailers have better deals in different states. They must have deals with certain wholesalers/generators in some states.

    • sumo wasnt even giving me solar plans directly.

the affiliate rates on are really good, but i'm not sure if i'll be eligible if I sign up and if those rates are changing anytime soon.

  • Is it free to switch providers? I thought there was connection and disconnection fees?

    • +2

Free to switch as they don't need to connect or d/c the power

      • Some list 'move-in fee', so I feel like they may charge you that just for changing suppliers?

        • +1

Nope, since they match all the details with the old provider.

Same as churning internet or esim mobile phones; nothing but a phone call\form and you're done.

  • +2

I actually swapped from globird to tango in VIC. Tango has the lowest rates and locked rates till 2024.

    • Same plus there is $150 credit on first bill.
Should cover the increases a bit based on my low usage.

  • +7

Heads up, signed up to a new connection with GloBird and it took over a month for them to transfer the electricity from AGL. We even had to speak to AusGrid who said globird had not organised proper access (it’s even a smart metered property).

Globird just kept saying ‘sorry no access’. After many phone calls we finally get connected, first bill comes, and they try to flog us with 4 separate reconnection fees. Complained, they waived 3, but still wanted to charge 1 despite all the hassle they put us through.

Then, month later - new financial year price hikes. I complain about prices, oh they actually have a cheaper plan for me and can change us over to the cheaper plan!

So, just beware, my experience the service staff are friendly but their infrastructure/backend seems to be problematic, and like everyone else they’ll try to stuff you on pricing.

At least now, after my complaining, the rates seem to be the best for us. Not sure how long that will last though.

  • +1

Thanks, cheaper than Alinta after they hiked rates.

  • +5

It’s a great deal for newcomers but like everyone else said, I switch out every year for 6 months before applying for new customer rates again. I’ve just switched out atm because the new rates are INSANELY high.

    • who do you switch out too?

      • +1

        Energylocals online only plan

  • Tango is the better deal in VIC

    • I am given this rate now for Gas with Tango.

      Daily charge (¢/day)
      110.000

      Non-summer rate (¢/MJ)
      May – Oct
      First 50 MJ per day:
      2.717
      Next 50 MJ per day:
      2.530
      Next 50 MJ per day:
      2.365
      Next 100 MJ per day:
      2.200
      Balance per day:
      2.090

The increased rate from Globird in Aug.

      Gas Daily Charge ($/Day) $0.7150

      Gas Usage Winter
      - Step 1: 0.00-100.00 MJ/Day ($/MJ) $0.0299
      Gas Usage Winter
      - Balance ($/MJ) $0.0249

The daily rate for tango is higher than Globird.

      • I used the Vic energy compare w Gas and I just switched from Tango to Globird. Globird seems to be slightly cheaper for me. However, awaiting 1st of Aug prices changes to see if I will switch again.

      • Got an email yesterday that Tango rates are changing from 1 August. I was on these rates (having only recently signed up and yet to receive first bill). The new rates are much higher. CovaU seems to be better for me.

        • Yes this caught me off guard too, prices rising quite a lot. I'm going to wait a month and then do a new energy comparison for my home.

  • Annoyed - Globird sent me an email saying they were going to increase rates, so I assume I don't get these cheap rates they're advertising. Time to leave methinks.

    NSW-
    Elect:
    Daily Charge ($/Day) $0.8690
    Usage $0.3960 / $0.4565

    Gas:
    Gas Daily Charge ($/Day) $0.5940
    Usage $0.0440 / $0.0352

    • If you write to them, they may put you on the cheapest available plan. Please check my comment on the previous page - I have posted the rate they offered to me upon emailing them.

      • Oooh will do, thanks.

    • when did you get the email?

      • The same email which they use for sending the other communication when you sign up etc.

  • +3

Signed up with these guys at Easter as the comparator said they would be cheaper
Now on a demand tariff and it seems much the same but 1st July going up 50% !!!!!
So did another comparison and Red Energy committing to 12 months without a rise is about 4% cheaper for June bill and then no increase

    • I went with RE a couple of weeks ago.
Supply charge is a bit high at $1.21 daily, NSW. 3c dearer than these guys.
Not sure if I should switch.

      • RE supply charge for me in Mascot is 1.63 daily, no thanks. Strange cause its the one recommended to me by https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

        • supply charges are gone through the roof - we will be in $2 very soon im afraid

          • @botchie: What would it take to so full solar wind and not get connected to the grid

  • Thanks. Signed up.

  • +3

Globird has a history of hiking rates while keeping rates for new customers 30-40% lower, be sure to check around again when you get the notice to increase.

  • I get:
    GLO:
    Daily Charge $/Day - 0.854c
    First 20 kWh/Day# $/kWh - 0.253
    vs
    RED Energy:
    Daily Charge $/Day - $1.21
    First 20 kWh/Day# $/kWh - 0.282c

    Tempting.

  • +6

I work for another energy retailer, and I can tell you this is their acquisition offer to attract new customers.
After a few months the price will have to raise to match the existing customers' pricing.

Also for VIC customers, don't change providers this month as VIC will have price change on 1st August.

    • Any discounts for Staff?

      • Yes, and family & friends :)

    • +3

If its cheaper for 6 months, theres no reason why not to change for these 6 months. Theres a move away from long term contracts, so it always pays to shop around. No such thing as loyalty anymore.

      • -1

You are right. Just make sure you add the connection/disconnection fees in the calculation when you decide to change company

        • Half the comments in this thread say there aren't any fees involved with changing retailers. Given you work for one, what fees do you need to pay if its just switching retailers rather than disconnecting/setting up a completely new energy meter?

        • +3

There is no disconnection or connection fee if you're already with a provider and switching to another.

    • "don't change providers this month as VIC will have price change on 1st August" - they're only going in one direction, and it's not down.
