I’m not quite knowledgeable on this.
Could some please tell me whether this router can replace the router from Optus/Telstra?

    • +2

It's not a modem and so doesn't work for FTTN without a seperate modem, but otherwise should work fine if you're using any other NBN connection type as the NBN NTD/NCD is itself the modem.

So if you have another powered box with an NBN logo between your Optus/Telstra box and your NBN line, you should be fine. Otherwise, you have FTTN and this will not work without another modem.

      • If you have FTTN, can you connect it to the modem and it's fine?

        • +1

          Yep, that should work fine

Though, if using an old modem router as the modem, you should check that it supports bridge mode. Some ISP provided boxes are locked down and don't provide the option.

  • Comparing to the also on sale RT-AX56U using versus.com it's apparently better and 3 years newer despite lower rrp (feedback from people with knowledge or experience with these routers would be great).

    plus for ax55

    2 more external antennas
    ?
    4vs2
    33.33% faster CPU speed
    ?
    4 x 1.5GHzvs3 x 1.5GHz
    Has WPA2 Enterprise
    ?
    82g lighter

I’m not super knowledgeable on routers, but I’ve found the ax-55 I got to be fantastic for the price (I paid $120 which was already super cheap).

What’s great about this one compared to others is the range. With Australian internet being so generally terrible in most cases, anything more would be overkill.. at least in my particular case.

Also, this is from ASUS who generally make good quality routers.

Just wanted to add that after comparing the two on asus site the 55 has half the ram, rom and no usb port,

I think im gonna go the 56 as well

    • +1

      I don't think thats right.

THe ax56 has quad core 1.5ghz as well

      • And WPA2 Enterprise. I need to find a better comparison site it seems.

    • +2

For main / primary router I think AX-56 is slightly better give more ram (256Mb)
For AIMesh node AX-55 is perfect to fit the purpose

  • Bought 2 of these for $115 each in the space of a month. Works great in AiMesh mode.

  • Needing a modem/ router, do they usually discount other items as the day goes on? Or is the current discount likely to be all they do for it?
    TIA

    • Same. Shout out if u find one!

  • Can this be used to extend a network? I live in a granny flat and need something to help with average coverage I get. There is one part of the unit that I can get good signal. Was hoping this might be able to help.

  • Would this work with opticomm network? Thinking of changing from Telstra to other provider but I only have Telstra supplied modem/router.

    Thanks.

    • +1

Asus routers are compatible with all ISPs on nbn and OptiComm.

  • I hope someone can help me

I have TP link vx 220 which is connected to NBN box via Ethernet cable. I have pathetic internet speed in other rooms and there is constant drop of internet connection even in the room with modem.

How can I get better speed with Asus Ax55 or Ax56 (which one is better for my case)?

I am on Superloop 1000/50 plan but hardly get over 500 even when I am standing next to Tp link.

  • Good value for what it is. I use one of these as a wifi mesh extender.

  • My RT-AC5300 is running Asuswrt-Merlin - Will this work as an extender or does it also need Merlin installed?

    • No you don't need Merlin installed on the node.

Operating mode : Access Point, AiMesh Node, Media Bridge, Repeater, Router

just bought one hoping this will be an upgrade over our old iinet technicolour router which is now having issues. Picked this one over the RT-AX56U as wasn't too fussed about the extra ram and storage due to the amount of devices we have in our house. Overall hoping for a smooth transition. I came across this detailed comparison between the two incase anyone wanted a read https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt-ax55-vs-rt-ax56u/2/ the RT-AX56U is better and might be better offer for some instead of saving some cash.
