$1050 off Samsung S23 Series ($800 off all other phones) with $69/M 120GB/M 24M Telstra plan (New/Port-in, In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

330

JB have done it again? Big phone discounts when you sign up with the Telstra $69 SIM plan. Note that S23 Series refers to the S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra, but the discount is fixed so this offer is less favourable for the larger phones.

The critical information summary and the terms & conditions state that the maximum repayment fee is $431.25 if you cancel in the first month, plus the first month ($69, but you can try for a pro-rata refund on live chat). Make of that what you will.

Notable deals:

The excess may be usable on accessories for the phone. Enjoy!

  • So the 256G would be $399?
Say someone were to take up this deal and cance immediately (i've read that people do that…) would it mean that I'm only paying $531.25?

    • Having already paid the up front cost on the phone, you would be charged $431.25 plus your plan usage pro-rata.

      • There's no pro-rata refund on usage on Upfront plans.

When you cancel, your service will be disconnected immediately. We won’t refund any money you’ve already paid and you’ll need to pay out any remaining Voucher Repayment Fee.

        https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

        • These are post-paid plans though, yeah?

          • @Dalryk: Kinda ;P

You could think of them more like prepaid with mandatory auto recharge.

They still trigger a credit check from memory, but you can't spend more or rack up a bill without knowing as it's all paid in advance (eg you can't pay for international calls beyond what's included, you can't roam before paying in advance straight from your credit card / bank account, there's no excess data, you can't call sex hotlines etc).

Same amount charged on the same day of every month.

  • There's no mention of another early termination charge other than the voucher, but I thought these 24 month ones had an ETC of half the value of the plan as well? I.e. it would be the voucher amount listed (pro rata) AND months remaining * 69 / 2?

  • Does anyone know if this would apply against the S23 ultra as well?

    • +1

That's exactly what it does, which if you look at the deal you can see in the title, and if you look at the related products I've tagged.

But the up front cost would be $899 up front, plus the termination charges.

    • It says any S23, so the Ultra counts.

I really want to get a JB Telstra deal but I'm not interested in a phone. I just want a gift card.

    • If you want to do that, it's available with a $600 gift card, but it will impact your credit score.

      • $600 isn't much for a 24 month contract, surely they can do better. I'm on Vodafone and the dropped calls are driving me mad but I'm holding out for a decent gift card deal. Although I feel like they don't do them anymore and it's always tied to a phone for the better offers.

        • Oh you're interested in keeping the plan? You might be better off with 15% gift card discounts when they come around and getting a Telstra-based MVNO for prepaid or plan.

I think you'll find more deals like this going forward, as it's tapping into the huge margins that Samsung, Apple and Google are swimming in at the moment.

      • Why does a gift card affect your credit score and a discounted phone doesn't?

        • There's a credit check when you sign up, and you're cancelling a contract with a debit payment.

  • if someone can confirm this is correct

    Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G 512GB
    $2249 - $1050 = $1199

    then cancel fee = $431.25

    So total cost = $1199 + $431.25
    = $1,630.25

    • +2

Bar maybe an extra dollar or two, yes, but remember you're taking a credit score hit when you cancel, so make sure the value proposition makes sense for you.

      • +2

how much of a credit hit and how long it takes to come back?

Not sure if this price is worth it then since it has been cheaper in the past
as well as the $ECR5T sale

        • I agree, that's why I highlighted 4 phone models in the post.

        • Are you planning to buy a house or get finance or a loan soon?within the year?

If not then I would not worry too much about the credit check. Go enjoy the bargain!

      • Why do you take a credit score hit? Is there not an option to cancel at anytime?

        • Because you left an agreed repayment deal for a product and a service, not just a service. We're talking 25 points here.

          • @jasswolf: how do you get 25 points back or how long it comes back?

yeah essentially you saying to credit provider you can't pay the contract

            • @pinkybrain: It wouldn't take long to smooth over if you're making credit card repayments regularly, but it's a consideration for those who are concerned with their credit score.

          • @jasswolf: Oh right. Thanks. Dunno who -1'ed you but i just put you back to neutral lol

          • @jasswolf: What? You don't take a credit score hit for cancelling. You take a credit score hit for applying in the first place.

        • +1

Telstra would perform a credit check as it's a post paid service. That check will have an impact on your credit score.

    • -1

I think you need to deduct the $450 voucher from telstra as well
      so $2249 - $1050 - $450 = $749 upfront
      then 749 + 431.25 = $1180.25 total if I'm not wrong..

  • I guess you cant claim this method on tax?

    • +1

The receipt shows the full ticket price of the phone, then a voucher being applied.

      • oh sweet

  • The $431 voucher repayment fee is listed in the middle column, under $450 voucher.

The $800 voucher has voucher repayment fee of $766 in that column.

The formatting looks like this $69 plan lands in the middle column, but then that should only get $450 voucher.

I'm not sure the voucher and voucher repayment fees correlate with plan costs and inclusions in the tables above…

    • The $800 voucher is the standard offering for the $99 plan. This is a bonus on the $69 plan, so the fees for that plan apply.

This has been covered before in many previous JB deals.

  • no ultra no care

    • +1

That's a reading comprehension fail on your part, but it's not a good deal for the Ultra IMO.

      • which do you see as a deal?

        • The ones mentioned in the table! ;)

  • I don't know, but if you say it's true based on past experience so be it.

Confusing how the CIS is correct for everything except the voucher repayment fee or the voucher value

    • It's not confusing, that's the document for the standard offerings. This is an additional bonus being specifically offered to the $69 plan, as stipulated in the screenshot I've included in the deal post.

Telstra and JB are cutting into their margins to offer the deal.

      • Well the CIS is for a different product with a different voucher value, but it applies anyway to this special deal. Forgive me for being confused.

  • Above chat is little confusing. I am looking for samsung s23 ultra only. So how much will it cost if i cancel telstra plan in 1 month? Can any ozb friend pls tell? Thanks

    • I did the similar plan when Samsung was offering the Watch

      So it would cost: $1949 - $1050 + $431.25 + $69 = $1399.25
You might be lucky and get the $69 refunded

      • +1

Thanks mate. Yeah costco was offering few weeks back s23 ultra 512gb with watch5 for $1802

        • These deals are geared for phones much closer to the voucher value, and the JB deal for the S23 with watch last month was better than this.

    • It's about $1333 if you cancelled on the first day or so, but I don't think that's a good deal when you've got the options of the Pixel 7 Pro and the Samsung S23. One has similar photo performance (with better colours) and the same display size, the other has almost identical internals and performance.

      • Thanks mate. I have samsung s21 ultra so was thinking if this deal is worth the upgrade but samsung phone prices drops qjickly quite often. So will watch it..

        • Sorry as noted here, the first month may be an additional cost, but see how you go on cancellation follow-up with live chat.

      • One has similar photo performance (with better colours) and the same display size, the other has almost identical internals and performance.

        which one is which?

        • The Pixel 7 Pro takes great photos and has a QHD 120Hz OLED display, the S23 has most of the same internal hardware.

The S23 series is mostly separated by screen size and battery size, with the S23 Ultra also having a display resolution bump, a different camera configuration, and the S Pen.

  • Whats the total if cancel for the S23 128GB?

    • +1

The two numbers are in the deal post, add them together, then add a couple more dollars as buffer if you're cancelling day 1.

    • Sorry as noted here, the first month may be an additional cost, but see how you go on cancellation follow-up with live chat.

      • Anyone have any experience with the refund on the pro-rata first month and tips on how to get it?

I can confirm that the cancellation cost is $431.25 and that's the only cost + right now $69 for one month (I asked they said they cannot refund

        • I repeatedly advised you not to go this route, you'd be trying your luck with live chat and if you fail it's only a 13% discount on gift cards while losing 25 points on your credit score. This is a bad financial decision to make.

I offered you a better alternative to go find, which is here. Please stop bothering people and learn to use search functions.

          • @jasswolf: I'm just trying to share my experience that I couldn't get the first month refunded via live chat/messenger…. your post makes it sounds like it might be possible but from my experience it is not. If others have, I'm asking if anyone can share how they did it.

Not sure why you are making such a fuss about this, I'm also trying to help people out and I have no idea what you are talking about because I got the $800 promo anyways ("repeatedly" = once)

            • @wazsupsz: I suspect it comes down the the person that you speak to or more about who they ask.

As I understand it (from recent past experience) The agent doesn't have the authority to refund the sign up portion, they can only make the request on your behalf with via the team who manages the JB/Telstra accounts. In my case, I managed to have it refunded after explaining I stuffed up when buying. The agent was great and understanding and grovelled on my behalf. I was lucky

        • I got my $99 refunded.
Asked politely, they asked for a reason, i told them i hadnt activated the sim and realised i dont need the plan anymore as they have provided me with an alternate telstra plan.
          Refund invoice came 1hr later

          • @easternculture: Thanks for sharing!

What happened with me was I purchased the phone + signed up for the plan today. I also never used the sim (e.g. didn't even put it in the phone) and via the Mytelstra app I started a chat/messenger.

Requested the cancellation - they confirmed the cancellation fee of $431 and I confirmed to cancel the plan.
I then asked for refund of the first month and they quoted the T+C that they don't refund partial months. I asked again a couple of times and they eventually said that they could give me half of it as refund ($35) and that this was an exceptional outcome because the T+C said they are not meant to.

  • +2

Isn't previous deal better? Cheaper by $100 (for the 23+ at least) and also free watch.

    • You're probably right, that's why I'm highlighting 4 very specific models in the deal post, but I'm just tagging the other S23 phones as they are technically included in the additional bonus offer.

  • Hey all, this is my first time having a go at one of these deals. Can I check my understanding?

    1. Buy pixel 7 for $29, signing up for $69 24m contract.
    2. Cancel contract straight away at home. Pay $431.25 ETC.
    3. Now out of contract, we've got the phone for about $460.

Is that correct? Are there any other fees or hitches we need to be aware of?

And I'm presuming I shouldn't port my number across, since we will cancel straight away…

    Thanks in advance.

    • They'll probably take the first month in advance, but then refund pro-rata as part of the cancellation.

Keep in mind that deal is specifically for one colour of the 256 GB Pixel 7, so availability may be spotty.

      • +1

Keeping on this theme if you return the pixel you should be refunded $829 right? Seeing as how the voucher is dealt with separately.

So you would then just be up $350ish?

        • No, the voucher is exclusively for a phone purchase.

      • Thanks heaps - that's great.

        • Sorry as noted here, the first month may be an additional cost, but see how you go on cancellation follow-up with live chat.

      • +1

There's no pro-rata refund on Upfront plans.

When you cancel, your service will be disconnected immediately. We won’t refund any money you’ve already paid and you’ll need to pay out any remaining Voucher Repayment Fee.

        https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

        • I stand corrected, noted!

        • What's the voucher repayment fee? Just checking I won't be on the hook for the $800 discount.

          • @dankenny: I'm noting the critical information summary refers to an $800 voucher which would have to be repaid if the plan is cancelled:

"The voucher will entitle you to the purchase of goods from JB Hi-Fi stores" … "If you cancel or move to a lower cost plan then you'll need to pay a Voucher Repayment Fee pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term."

Is this the same thing as the ETC?

            • +1

@dankenny: $800 voucher comes with the $99 plan.

This deal is the $69 which usually has a $450 voucher.
As you're signing up on the $69 plan, I would assume your max voucher repayment would be $431.25 if you canceled right away, as that's what's in the CIS.

              • @b3au: Are you sure? If they are doing $1050 off then the voucher is $1050 and you’d be on the hook for $1006.25. Or $766.67 for the $800 voucher. It doesn’t matter which plan you signed up for.

                • @Poppin: I'm only going off what is in the CIS, and the max voucher repayment listed against the $69 plan - which is what this offer is for.

                • @Poppin: This deal has been posted before, read back through JB mobile offers to see these are bonus credits for the existing contracts.

    • You'll also need to ask Telstra to refund the $69 which is paid upfront

      • Thanks for the feedback, we will give it a go.

    • +1

this is wrong calculation and wrong method to make profit
if you want the phone just use the correct method, edu store or wait for the boxing day

  • price match with Samsung government store ultra 512 gb - $1,574.30

    • -2

      They wont.
As sale rep will have to log into their computer and see the price. Rep wont have access to gov store

      • They did it for me last time, price matched s23+256 gb . Jb artarmon

        • Depends on person.
I got the 512gb ultra price matched with the 15% off TGG code.

          But 2 other JBs refused.
          YMMV

  • Anyone here up to date with the exynos vs snapdragon differences nowadays?

Off the top of my head, Snapdragon was still ahead with both power consumption and processing speed. How is it going now?

    • +1

Samsung is all exclusively snapdragon now

      • Cheers!

  • How much S23+ with 256GB - total out of pocket cost assuming no cancel?

    • +1

      1649 - 1050 = 599 + 69 x 24 = 2255

      • Thank you.

vs my current $600 every 24 months (plan only), that seems too expensive an upgrade!

  • +2

I'm doing my bit by buckling up and avoiding inflation with interest rates being so high. I'm rocking a 4 year old Note 10+ 512gb on a Kogan $150 500gb Flex plan.

  • Assuming it'll be possible to use gift cards to pay the remaining amount for the phone for a little extra discount?

  • If I have bought the $99 plan end of last month and then cancelled it immediately, would there be any issue with the cancellation if I do it again this time? Would the store have any info about the cancellation and would Telstra refuse to cancel by any chance?

    • They'd have your details, yes.

      • Legally, that can't refuse it right if I am paying the termination charge as per CIS? Anyone bought twice and cancelled in the past?

        • Both probably have policies around where they have the right to refuse service, and there are limits to SIM service signups in a 12-month period, I think.

  • If I have an existing Boost mobile plan, is anything stopping me from just signing up from just signing up for this deal under a new JB-Hi Fi Mobile plan? Or would this not work?

    • Won't work, as that's an existing Telstra-related service. If you click through the deal image, Boost is directly mentioned in the fine print at the bottom.

You can take a new number with this and cancel if you want.

      • Pretty sure is he is asking about signing up a new plan. Which works just fine regardless of what other services you might have.

And of course, then you cancel the new plan, and just put your existing sim into the new phone.
