  • I have this, freedom from Hisense OS.
I think I paid this new from Amazon though not long after it came out.

Thanks for the update; please keep us informed.

      • +1

Needless to say, please document the changes and update the tracker too.

  • Just bought the fire tv 4k max. What are the differences between them?

    • +1

I was about to ask the same, but seems like the A15 on this would be a lot faster than fireTV.

    • +3

If you have your own media 😉, the codecs on the fire tv are so broken that specific encodes of Dolby vision and hdr10+ will just black screen 😂

Would definitely recommend the Apple TV or chromecast 4k

    • +6

I have both the firestick 4K max and this model ATV. They are different enough that they are almost separate categories (streamers: firestick and chromecast) (set top box ATV and Shield).
The ATV is by far the most powerful, but sone people like the Shield for some apps Apple refuses to allow on its AppStore .

If just using as a streamer maybe the firestick is all you need, especially on sale.

The ATV is definitely the better device, it’s a lot snappier, the OS is superior IMHO (others may disagree) the apps seem functionally better and consistent. And of course it has a plethora of apps and subscription services for other purposes than streaming. But it is double the price in comparison.

But for streaming you should be happy with the firestick.

    • 4k max would be perfectly fine for everything i would expect

    • The main difference for me is one allows you to easy sideload applications while the other one doesn't. Once Apple allows sideloading it'll be the best device handsdown.

  • +1

iirc the A15 Bionic let them remove the fan entirely from the latest version, so there’s no moving parts, if you wanted to feel better about refurbished.

    • Think ATV’s have always been passively cooled

Willing to be wrong but I think the’re all passive

      • +4

Wikipedia says that the first two 4K versions had a fan. The HD and the old small ones didn't.

        • Thanks, good to know.

          • @0jay: Fairly sure all the 4K models had/have a fan. I thought the Gen 3 1080p / HD had a fan as well, but if Wikipedia says no, then I’m wrong.

I have the first gen 4K model and at this price upgrading is worth doing. As someone who loves my Nvidia Shield TV Pro and the ability to side load I also love how a 2019 model was so over powered that it’s still good today and all the previous models (2917 and 2015) are getting updates. That’s pretty impressive.

However Dolby Vision support only came on the 2019 model. One of the annoying things is the tiny 16GB of which you can only use 12GB for app storage. Some apps will allow you to move them to a USB Flash drive however the vast majority don’t. I’m forever juggling installed apps.

The biggest killer though is switching into HDR or DV HDR seems to take about 2-4 seconds which definitely isn’t present on the AppleTV.

The inability to even put a VPN on the AppleTV is annoying but I believe they are allowing that on TVOS 17 when it comes out.

As was mentioned previously once sideloading apps is allowed and they don’t make it near on impossible to load apps from other app stores, despite having a US AppStore account on my current ATV, if the newer model supports Dolby Digital Plus aka E-AC3 on my model you either have to force the device to Dolby Digital as most media you are likely to find is encoded with that.

Apple supports Dolby Digital Plus if it’s got Atmos encoding as well so I don’t understand why playing back media which doesn’t have Atmos ends up coming out as Multichannel PCM - like I said I have an older box so lots of things have changed since the first Gen ATV4K

  • $188.10 with giftcards from giftcards.com.au

If you can get a damn gift card that is…

    • I grabbed mine as I was on the Apple store - came through in 5mins.

    • Bought the gift cards 20m ago, no issues

  • I wish they'd make a better remote, this one feels too thin and the buttons are hard to press whenever I've used one

    • +1

I agree. The sleek simplicity focused apple design doesn’t translate well to a media remote.

Either go the big array of buttons and solid feel like Sony or have a nice feeling ergonomic shape like Samsung.

      • +3

Biased as I have Apple TV's on all my TV's, it's the defacto remote unless I'm watching physical media - I'm very used to it. Plus if you're in the Apple ecosystem can use your phone or watch instead; easy to access from lock screen or control centre.

    • +2

It has an IR sensor - you can use any remote you like

  • +7

Don't forget 7% cashreward cashback too. Refurbished and gift card payments are eligible.

I bought this without intending use, during some deal posted on here..
    "buy first, ask questions later"

    I regret doing that

Never again 3specially in the hundr3fs

Just got this to replace nvidia shield. It's great

  • Can anyone let me know if this is able to interoperate around FTA TV as well?
And if I link all the apps for FTA and paid sub services it's a single menu style setup?
I currently have the parents on a Telstra Roku box that they are enjoying but would be keen to get this as an upgrade for them.

I'm on LG webOS and it's good, tempted for myself but can't see the main benefit for me

    • Most (all?) of the FTA providers have streaming apps you can use on AppleTV.

      • yeah was more asking if it's a one page kinda thing, where you don't need to go into each app individually and "recommended" shows end up on the Apple TV Main page or similar.
Will prob need to watch some videos on the Apple TV setup and use more specific to AU

        • +3

          Yes but no.

For streaming apps that support Apple's TV app (e.g. Tenplay, Paramount+, Disney+ etc), when you start watching a series (or exit midway through a movie) the TV App can track progress and let you know when new episodes are available. For apps that don't support it (Netflix & Stan are the big 2 in Oz), watching media in their apps won't display in the Up Next or Watch History of the TV app, and you need to use those apps directly. The TV app does a decent job of cataloging titles across all streaming platforms when searching for media.

Things like Kayo, FTA streams etc don't show up in the TV App.

        • Agree the jumping in and of apps is frustrating compared to having an EPG (it'd be great if you could assign the DTV channel numbers to the streams!). BUT, you can just ask Siri and she'll take you straight to a stream or program.

      • This is my biggest turn off on Apple TV, needing to use those apps. When I can access all that content on the alternatives without an app, need an account to log in and be forced to watch adds when watching that content. Do you know if there’s a way to access the FTA providers without the official apps and ad free?

        • Not sure - I haven't looked into it cause there's not much FTA I consume, a few ads during HYPBA doesn't bother me that much.

Also, for those with network storage based media setups at home that like Kodi - MrMC is a Kodi fork for playing local media (note: it doesn't support plugins due to App Store rules)

        • +1

You can use NextDNS config file for ad blocking but I’m not sure how well it works with streaming apps.

Works great in iOS (including embedded in-app ads) but I don’t use streaming so never bothered to try on the ATV

        • +1

Sideload Kodi, add Matt Huisman’s repo and install IPTV AU :)

        • Why not? The higher quality stream instead of dodgy over the air transmission is more than worth it. It is the only way I rarely watch FTA channels.

Seeing advertising on FTA is quite jarring these days. Do advertisers really think people are that stupid?

        • The ads are from the FTA providers, not Apple. As is their login requirements. This is a one off process regardless.

    • Keep in mind that some live sports are not streamed and you need to watch FTA over the anttena

  • New one $235.60 at mobileciti with CODE MC5PJUL

    Worth going refurbed?

    • worth $47.50

    • $228 with SNMS…. code

has been as low as $199 new

      • This one is 175 with all the discounts.

    • Definitely, Apple refurbs are as reliable as their new products.

Get an NVIDIA shield for a few bucks more.

I see the 4th gen is cheaper on marketplace is there any reason to get the 3 over the 4?

    • The 3rd gen listed in this deal is the latest model, released November last year.

    • There’s no 4th Gen. potentially they may be referring to the HD from 2015 but officially there isn’t one.

    • +1

this one is seriously old, I have that exact same one, was from around 2016-ish and while they still work, it's hardly a bargain, 1080p only, slow as, the remote's un-replaceable lithium battery will be buggered, etc

      • hardly a bargain

Hard agree. I have one and it’s fine but that’s a stupid price imo

  • Thanks OP, love the Apple TV just grabbed one to upgrade from the older 32gb model that kept running out of space.

  • Rats, looks like I've just missed the 128GB model. Gone OOS while I was trying to get through checkout.

64GB (no ethernet/Matter) is still available
