Why would you want discreet graphics in something like this?

      • -4

It's useful for running GPU intensive processes. A few of my mates at uni would use them to run machine learned models (and occasionally train them but they'd use uni library computers most of the time). It also runs a lot of computational intensive things quicker and can be useful when doing things like image analysis. They're not as good as a larger computer and the battery life isn't as good as one without it imo but it'd usually do a lecture or two before needing to be plugged in.

I personally just went the XPS 13 with onboard graphics, was aiming for the FHD version instead of 4K but couldn't get it with the specs I wanted, so battery life took a bit of a hit anyway.

      • why wouldn't you?

  • +5

WOW! if only it were touch screen

    • +8

Out of curiosity, how would you benefit from a touch screen?

Only asking as my last two laptops have been touch screen and I barely ever used them for that. It's more clumsy than a real tablet so it hardly occurs to me to use it but I occasionally will when scrolling a pdf or something and I don't have a mouse on hand. Interested in what people use them for.

      • If the laptop is like Lenovo IdeaPad, you can bend the screen to 360 degree and turn it to a tablet, and then the touch screen is really helpful. It also works with digital pen.

        • I'm not sure about this one but my XPS13 couldn't go flat and neither could my surface laptop. But I'd definitely say that's the main reason why it wasn't something I used a lot.

If you're able to draw on it on a flat surface it makes it far more useful

        • +1

I use tablet mode (folding 360 degree) rarely, but I find touch is usual with my casula browsing..like scroll up down instead of using mouse pointer and scroll bar..It's just an added convenience.. I have lenovo yoga ips touch and the new acer swift go oled non touch. As much I like the oled screen, I like the touch and flexibility with Yoga

      • Most times I use a touch screen is when I'm shutting down, undocked and that blue screen indicating apps are still open. I use the touch screen function to select "shut down anyway"

The other time is when I forget it's a touchscreen and when pointing to something on someone else's laptop and inadvertently scrolling or selecting something on their screen.

Otherwise, I like my laptop screen finger print free

      • I only use it to move a few lines up and down in a document or website, and even then it’s only during a meeting where I actually have the lid open.

I bought previous year XPS13 but top spec for around $2.3k? with a touch screen and have never used.
I also have a XPS15 with discrete graphics for around $3k with a touch screen and have never used.

Horses for courses but it is just an added expense most will not use.

This seems like a bargain for me.

      I love my XPS13 - i never use the XPS 15 now.

      • Lol you bought 2 laptops without using them?

But yeah I've got the XPS13 and love it. If I'm doing any machine learning I just use the cloud, can afford to use way better GPUs than I'd ever be able to get otherwise

        • +2

No mate, they have both been well used for REVIT/Engineering projects.

          • @teaBagger: Oh my bad, I read it as never using the laptop lol, I see you meant never using the touchscreen haha.

          • @teaBagger: What specs is the one are using for REVIT are you pleased with performance for Revit?

            tia

            • @Stephen5864: Hey Stephen - admittedly RAM is king with the REVIT projects I have had experience with in the last year or two.
I would always (2 years ago) say 64GB was a waste with REVIT as only 32GB was utilised by the software but I think Autodesk has now patched that limitation….64GB is now a realistic minimum and that is not enough for some of my projects. So I would go for discrete graphics and 64GB which probably means an XPS15. I was previously running XPS13 with dock and 32GB no probs with REVIT.

I bought a laptop that was meant to convert into a tablet with touch screen and has never used the touch function…..

    • I got Surface Pro and this with a touch screen. Barely ever used them.
The idea of a laptop being used as a tablet was good years ago. But if I want a tablet I would go for Android or ipad.
Maybe there is some user case as a graphic designer etc, but not for the majority of us.

    • Mine is touch screen and never use it. Owned for 2 years.

    • maybe 25 years ago touch screens were expected to take over the world - and they installed them in shopping centres and such

what happened ? Turned out that maybe the quickest tiring muscles in the body are those that lift your arm up to horizontal to touch a vertical screen, and you won't want to do that for more than a few seconds

and - as another said, especially since COVID, many won't want to touch something someone else has recently touched, so ewww …

we had touch screen laptops - rarely used, and ended up cracking my screen I think because it was thinner than usual - so that's a no from me.

of course, if you're a creative drawing designs on your Apple screen (probably more horizontal) then you might want one - but for me, no.

  • We have one from 2017 and it's still going! Fairly light and portable for the price.

    • I'm using mine from 2016, i5 5500u + 8g ram, still going strong except the battery.
Love the aluminium + carbon fibre built and portability.

  • Damnit, just got this last week for $1345.
    Always the way

Honestly, no full size usb port is a deal breaker, having the thought of always carrying around a dongle is super annoying

    • The dongle included (at least with mine) is pretty subtle and as I have a case it just permanently stays in there. It's about the size of the plugs only and is rigid. I eventually got the 310A to use with it in old screens but when travelling around studying it was great as I could just sit down and plug in from whichever side is most convenient.

If I was plugging in a lot of USBs though it'd get old quick.

    • It's aimed at the Macbook Air, and is more about being light and slick than having massive amounts of connectivity. If you want something with more ports get a Latitude, I've got a 7440 for work and it's been great so far.

  • The i7 version is only $200 more, would it be a more valuable choice than the i5?

    • +4

No - get the Yoga 7i EVO with 13th Gen + OLED touch screen for the same price`

The Lenovo has a much larger 71Wh battery compared to the Dell 51Wh as well

      • Or the AMD equivalent - https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-2-in-1-series/yoga-7-gen-8-(14-inch-amd)/82ymcto1wwau2

        • Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you suggested the above Lenovo model vs the one below? The one i've found seems to be slightly cheaper and maybe better (sound like the screen is better)? Looking for one myself and wondering if there's something I was missing that led to the one you suggested being better? Cheers! :-D
          https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-2-in-1-series/yoga-7-gen-8-(14-inch-amd)/82ym0047au

        • AMD model in that link is coming up as $1469 with a 2 week wait versus walking into Officeworks today and getting the Intel version for $200 less

AMD will have better power usage and iGPU performance but is behind on single core speed`

Plus the dual Thunderbolt 4 ports on the Intel is a real difference

      • Stop, my brain hurts. I feel like I'm getting further away from making a decision each day. Everytime I'm keen on something people chime in claiming a better option. For this price range $1000 to $1500 for an everyday use laptop that would be good for photo editing aswell. What would you recommend my friend?

        • +5

I feel like I'm getting further away from making a decision each day. Everytime I'm keen on something people chime in claiming a better option.

You need to decide what are the key features you value most before getting swayed
You are actually lucky because it is rare to have so many high spec laptops available at the same time with decent prices

… everyday use laptop that would be good for photo editing aswell

This translates to "I want a well rounded laptop that has an excellent display"

          Starting from the cheapest option:

          1. MSI Prestige 13 Evo $999 - deal says Expired but stock still available. Light 1KG laptop with a big 75Whr battery. Excellent WUXGA ratio screen and bright at 450nits. Great choice if you travel regularly

          2. Lenovo Yoga Slim 6i $1098 - slightly larger and heavier than the Prestige. Screen slightly bigger with sharper 2.2K resolution but 150nits dimmer (noticeable)

          3. Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 $1272 - heavy at 2KG with large body because it has the biggest 16" screen. 32GB RAM is perfect for photo editing. AMD CPU is the most power efficient so battery life will be good. Great choice if you mainly use the laptop stationary

          4. This Dell in the deal - worst option. No redeeming features except it has a 50nit brighter display than option 1. Is that worth $300?

          5. Lenovo Yoga 7i $1297Fastest CPU and best OLED display. Most accurate and vibrant colours for photo editing. 13th Gen CPU's suck power but this can be balanced by using dark/black themes saving power with OLED

So options 4 and 2 can be cut immediately leaving you with the Prestige (best for travelling), IdeaPad Pro 5 (best for stationary) and Yoga 7i (if photo editing is the most important thing you do)

  • +4

If you're looking for a thin and light, another option is the MSI Prestige 13. Higher power CPU (i5 1240p), higher capacity battery (75Wh) and lighter (0.99kg). $999 delivered with Ebay plus. Note that while it says 2 in stock, I bought one yesterday when there was 2 in stock, and they immediately updated the listing to have 2 remaining again.

There's updated 13th gen versions you can buy but from what I can tell it's purely a CPU refresh, and at the moment the cheapest you can get one of them is ~$1250 from Computer Alliance eBay which doesn't seem like great value to me.

    • How's the build quality of the MSI Prestige 13?
      Much flex? Thanks

      • Haven't gotten mine delivered yet, but having a little play with one in store last week it seemed pretty good. Magnesium alloy chassis so decently rigid material.

      • Update: got it now, very minimal flex yeah, quite stiff for the size. I can flex it a small amount if I apply a manual twist to the body (twisting the screen is easier obviously) but general use of the device, picking up by the corner etc, there is no noticable flex at all.

  • How would this handle photoshop and light room? Any recommendations for another lightweight and portable device? (Nil touch screen required)

    • Get a MacBook Air m1. Lightroom works much faster on the apple silicon Macs

  • -1

This or the below deal? Mainly movies in bed and occasional casual game. Also like the metal chassis.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/791549

    • The one you posted is almost 2kg

      • Do you even lift bro? Weight doesn't bother me but I guess others it might. Still not sure which one is more suitable.

        • Completly fair point I've got a couple of killer 5kg laptop deals you might be interested in. Good value too

          • @Voucherd: Metal body? Don't mind the weight but needs a nice form factor so it impresses all the ladies I have over

          • @Voucherd: Id love them, links please

  • Decent if you don't game and like a smaller laptop.

  • Would you guys rather this or the Macbook M1/M2 options?

    • If you like/own apple products then not this.

Pulled the trigger on this. The 13% cashback from cashrewards just for today got me over the line. I hope it's not too heavy and I hope I got it right

  • Great deal.
Bought refurb one at this price before

  • isnt 14"better ?

  • I had a top of the line version of this model but ended up getting a Lenovo 7i while waiting for a repair on it. Have ended up selling the XPS and stuck with the 7i. The 7i has much better battery life, slightly bigger screen, a USB A port and a 3.5mm jack that I forgot how handy they are to have. Don't miss the higher res screen or touch. The touchpad on the XPS is pretty buggy with lots of phantom clicks. Only a smidge heavier and still feels premium.

  • It's out of stock now. Any chance would it be available in the future?
