Wing Wah Double Yolk Lotus Mooncake (2pcs White Lotus + 2pcs Regular Lotus) 740g $48.88 @ Costco (Membership Req'd)

1040

This is not part of Wing Wah's standard range, so I can only assume its a special just for Costco. No link available.

Contains:
2 x Wing Wah White Lotus Moon Cake with 2 Yolks (185g each)
2 x Wing Wah Lotus Moon Cake with 2 Yolks (185g each)
Wing Wah Paper Gift Bag

I've compared the ingredients lists with the standard Wing Wah products and it seems to be the same (68% lotus paste, 16% duck egg). Still Made in Hong Kong as well so the quality should be there. Expiry 30-11-2023.

Given that mooncake prices over the past 5 years have been hitting the $60+ mark (for the traditional Made in Hong Kong segment), this seems to be a pretty good price. You can of course wait for Mid-Autumn to be over and pick up the leftovers, but the lotus ones tend to be sold out by then.

Plenty of stock at Lidcombe and Casula NSW - unknown about other Costco stores.

Buying mooncake before mid autumn festival is definitely not the ozbargain way… Hand in your ozbargain membership!! ;-P

It's like buying Christmas wrapping in the lead up to Christmas….

    • +23

Err nah these will sell out.
But this is like saying your buying Easter eggs before after Easter is a bad idea , some people have to buy before…

      • Who eggsacly?

      • Egg-cellent point there

      • You just have to convert to orthodox christian, since easter is a week later it's all on sale well before your easter

    • +2

These popular brands normally sold out before mid-autumn festival.

    • If you want Hong Kong made mooncakes, the only way to get them is when they are just released.

You can get other non-Hong Kong brands after the facts. It’s all depending on choices.

    • +3

So you reckon buy them after mid autumn, put them in the freezer then thaw it before mid autumn 2024 is the ozbargain way? =D

  • +2

chinese 8's got the aussie market in a chokehold bwoi

  • +1

Thanks for the heads up. The last few years I must've been after these have sold out and only seen cheaper Malaysian made ones available.

    • I asked some of the supermarkets in Sydney last year about this and they said the distributer is importing 20% less than previously. I'm not sure if its because of production constraint in HK or they want to pump the price, but either way they get sold out way faster.

      • A few years ago I ended up buying mooncakes from 85C in Chatswood, but they're gone now.
I found some Durian flavoured ones at the Asian supermarket - but they were not very large.
At least these are cheaper than Godiva moon cakes!
I will try to get some (have to buy as gifts and deliver beforehand)
Personally, I used to wait until the day to get discounted ones, but I think it was slim pickings last year.

      • +2

No. Because those moon cakes suppliers started to ask cash pay in advance. They don’t give out credit payment terms anymore. It’s around 2 month away from the moon cake festival, the retailers risk is too great this year if moon cake sales bad so most Asian grocery limited their orders now.

        • make sense, as payment makes the most difference

    • +1

Yes. You see it and you have to buy it. Or else they are gone.

  • +9

Mooncakes always seem unreasonably expensive. The market is surely ripe for disruption.

    • Sell a 1.48kg product priced at $88.88. Profit.

      • will be $28/kg after 29th Sep

        • Unlike Hot Cross Buns, which one of my mates bought while out on a run 2 weekends ago
These are very seasonal, for Aus. Prob not so in Asian countries.
So will likely be sold out…noting mid Autumn festival is actually 29th September, there maybe another shipment or other brands.

    • +4

There is some kind of Chinese thing going on regarding jacking up prices before festivals when demand is going to be high. I think there is more to it than making cheap cakes.

Price of rice and oil also goes up before Chinese New Year.

      • +4

Just like how petrol goes up before a long weekend?

        • True.

7-11 fuel lock. Fuel up the week before. Fuel lock for when you are on the way / back and fill up. 7-11 app been every helpful.

Maybe someone should do a Moon Cake Lock app.

      • +1

There is some kind of Chinesecapitalist thing…

    • +8

Mooncakes usually are gifted to someone else. You will look cheap if you give $20 vietnam made mooncakes.. Hence people willing to spend more money for HK made

      • +3

Absolutely this. Do not buy the cheap ones (made in China/Malaysia/etc) for oldies. They know which ones are good and you will get in trouble for saving a few dollars.

  • That price seems to be done on purpose? Few 8s in there. Pity about the 4.

According to the Chinese authorities it costs $8 to produce a box of mooncake in China and so in 2022 they cracked down on abuse of local market rules.

Mooncakes sold in Australia are not a smart ozbargain deal.

    • +3

Interesting. +1 from me. Not sure why u got a neg

      • -4

We live in a free country and so also ozbargain is a place where people can express their views.

    • +6

It's a good article showing the effects of the new "anti-corruption" rules; I didn't know it also extended to mooncake.

Same source also write "[average box of mooncake]…should not exceed a retail price of 500RMB, local media said. About 80% of products were sold for less than half that…". 500RMB is 100AUD, and 48.8AUD is less than half that.

Considering shipping cost, the historical price in AU, the fact that you need an import license to bring the egg variant into AU, AND the product needs to be heat treated for AU market, I think this is good value.

    • Article says £8 not AU$8.

    • brick only cost less than a dollar each but after you built a house, try to count the bricks to see how much are they…. dont use the cost of cost as renting a factory and running machine all cost money, logistics, marketing, packaging, storage and sale negotiation.

don't using how much it from factory for everything as this world isn't making that way

  • Anyone know if Marsden park has any?

    • +2

Not when I passed by today. They had 4 MX double yolk for 59.99

      • Thanks!

  • Is this OzB's preference over Mei Xin brand?

    • +3

MX is unreasonably expensive compared to Wing Wah. Quality wise I think there are only small differences between pastry thickness, pastry doneness, oilyness, sweetness, texture, and egg doneness.

Between MX, Wing Wah, Hang Heung I would say get the cheapest one. Kee Wah is supposed to be the primo one but I find it a bit dry.

      • Thanks

      • +1

I only eat the mix nuts one, I tried all brands you mentioned, I would say MX best them all.

    • +5

A few years ago i did a blind tasting of white lotus and picked MX over Wing Wah. My main complaint was that WW was too oily, but that was it. If I was close to a Costco, I would buy this as price is pretty ridiculous these days. I would not eat any other brand other than these two tbh.

    • +1

My family’s choice was maxim over wing wah for the past twenty years or so.

    • I know many families from HK stopped buying Maxim when the company admitted their pineapple buns were made with the gutter oil.

  • +1

Is it still possible to find green bean paste with 2 yolks?

I had it a couple of years back and found it less oily than the traditional lotus paste.

    Haven't seen them again since.

  • Really cheap especially is Wing Wah. It’s the luxury moon cake brand in Australia.

  • +2

dont need to eat for a week after one of these, i feel full just looking at the pictures

      The secret ingredient is lard!

      • i used to get some from hong kong, i never looked into it but that explains a lot

Any good ones from KFL? That's my go to place lol

  • +1

HYT ones from Costco is good. Just $31 or something? Pretty famous brand from Malaysia. We used to buy that all the time and it's a decently expensive brand over there.

  • Just to clarify, is this for 2 moon cakes or 4? Listing says 2pcs which is a bit rich for $48.88.

    • +1

      It's a mixed box of 4, containing 2 x [white lotus + 2 yolk], and 2 x [regular lotus + 2 yolk].

      • Around Eastwood its $59.90 for 4 (white lotus + 2 yolk) variant. One in blue box.

        $49 seems about right for a 2 x (white lotus + 2Y) and 2 x (normal yellow lotus + 2yolk).

  • Does anyone know if there's any at Moorabbin?

  • Selling mooncakes 2 months ahead is like putting up Christmas decorations in late October. It's becoming too business oriented.

    • +1

Fresh mooncakes why not? people do eat those as afternoon snacks or desert.

      • Not worth it at the ripoff prices.

    • They do that with Easter eggs too, so what?

      • So that would be another example of milking people for more money. They should do that for Valentine too. Roses in early December just before Christmas would be lovely.

      • And Hot Cross Buns in Jan.

    • People do buy mooncakes in advance to:

      • Gift to other people
      • In preparation for the mooncake festival, and is blessed during that day

      It's essentially religious.

Not sure what's a better time frame to sell it lol, a week before so everyone can all clog up the asian stores and areas?

      • Of course they do buy in advance but 2 months ahead is too much of a stretch. Maybe 1-4 weeks would be fine and that's how it used to it.

We were offered wholesale price Maxims mooncakes from a family friend about 3 weeks ago. We ordered 2 boxes but still haven't received them yet as it's still too early.

        • What is the wholesale price?

          • +1

@BuyNow Think Later: I think it was $45 for a box of 4 double yolk mooncakes. Not sure if white or red lotus paste. White paste would be worth a bit more.

        • Fair enough. But my hunch these days from even collecting things is that products that's coming on a shipping container seem to be done in advance, I reckon they probably have felt that it's hard to predict and control the timings, as a result it's probably sent out significantly earlier. I've noticed this LEGO as well, they have release dates etc, but as of this year I feel like they've been releasing them on time or earlier this time around. As opposed to 2021 and 2022 it was all over the shop, so my guess is everyone is giving extra buffer time.

As a result things arriving earlier means, there's less warehousing capacity, so why not offload it to your reseller's storage instead.

Not saying that it's a great thing, but hey whether they put it in storage for an extra month before putting it out to sell, isn't any harm, the consumer can buy it later if they wish.

  • -1

Anyone know if available at Lidcombe?

  • 2 yolk is too much. 1 yolk is good balance.

  • +1

Bargain for HK made mooncakes. MX are asking $70 for a box of 4 this year. They are price gouging now to the extreme. I got a box of some unknown mainland brand for $30 the other day to compare and they are at least 90% as good as MX. The only thing I didn't like was the egg yolk was a bit oily but if you're eating a mooncake, it's not like you're putting something healthy in your mouth.

  • Why don't people buy Australia made mooncakes?

    • The Australian made ones I've tried taste like dirt.

      • +1

Thx for the recommendation, been wondering what dirt taste like :)

      • Did you try the ones made in Cabramatta? They have genuine cuisine there.

    • @timhn I have and unfortunately the Aussie made ones were not up to standard. They were around $12 each

      • Fair enough. But I rather have my freshly made from local bakery than those shipping from overseas. Their rarely left on shelf more than a week. Price was expensive though, appx $15-20 each if I remember.

Taste wise, I found some brands made from Cabramatta are pretty good.

    • I've had some nice Australian ones. But you have to spend time, money etc working out which ones are good. (Even then, different products from the same business vary a lot; I think it was Red Jade pandan lotus was nice, but I don't like durian and they'd let durian affect their straight lotus mooncakes)

Also, the Australian ones don't tend to have nicely decorated tins/boxes; being wrapped in a bit of plastic on a bit of foam backing, doesn't look as good for gifting

      • You probably bought by single cakes? There are many decorative boxes made locally.

  • +1

4 is not a good number. $38.88 is better. $58.88 isn't any better, because 5 is like "not" so 58 becomes "not rich".

    • that's because ya thinking canto

mando 5 can sound like "me"

      I'm Switzerland either way

      • yep, i am rich =58

  • That’s not a bargain

    • Where's the gain

      • You gain the experience of the Chinese culture traditional festive foods. Also you should join the annual lychee boba tea chinese festival.

  • +1

I thought things can't say Made In Hong Kong anymore?

    • Why? You dont have to go by the country. Theres plenty of hipster clothing company's that say made in Melbourne or Sydney

      • Nah I thought it was a rule mandated by the owners saying that all exported goods can not say Made In HK.

Just look at all the nissaan instant noodles sold at Coles.

  • Amazing the rise in mooncake pricing, was at a local shop the other day and there was loads >$100/tin…

  • -2

Should out the store where this has been seen. Not available everywhere.

    • Don't you live in WA? OP is from Sydney

    • So you didn't read the OP then.

  • +1

    Thanks OP
I'll eat these over Clif bars for marathon. 😂

  • Any in Melbourne?

  • These are quite heavy. If you have family members like the younger ones, you can try getting from breadtop smaller version of moon cakes and I tried them which I found quite nice.

They are smaller and the cost is cheaper like $15 and there is newer taste like sesame, durian etc.

  • I tried contacting Costco Live Chat but they couldn't locate the item number (1688888) so could not give indication about stock availability, would be interested to hear whether anyone saw them in VIC.

    • Haha even the item number has as many 8's as they could cram in there.

    • Docklands Costco didn't have any. Had other brand of Mooncake

    • +1

Live chat said there were none at Ringwood Costco.

      They did however have:

ORIENTAL PATISSERIE MOONCAKE 4 SEASONS ASSORT 720G $31.99
      MEI-XIN LOTUS MOONCAKE $59.99
      MEI-XIN ORIENTAL MOONCAKE $69.99
MADELEINE CRYSTAL TARO MOONCAKES 450G $24.99
