iPhone 15 event expected 12/13 September with launch on 22nd September. Wouldn't be wise buying now.

    • +2

Fine for those in Lightning Ecosystem

      • +2

yeh im in two minds. will be super annoying if im on usb c and my wifes 13 pro is still on lightning. cables everywhere

        • +6

          Sounds like one extra cable??

          Even the ipads have usb-c…

          • @Caped Baldy: Classic example is we share a powerbank with lightning cable on it. Now i gotta worry about carrying an usb c cable as well which defeats the point of portability. Also my airpods and other work phone is on lightning. Whilst not a showstopper it will definitely be annoying if i keep forgetting to have the two cables.

        • +2

you telling me you have anything else with usb c?

        • +1

I got a cable similar to this:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/792304

It sits in the communal charger in the kitchen where all three heads get used (my Kindle and digital camera still use micro-USB)

      • +1

Still an option to get 14 but may be even cheaper when the 15 is out was the point. We'll see lots of small price decreases to clear stock over next few weeks.

The rumoured price increases may be US-only due to currency value and them being only region without an increase last year. Hopefully anyway.

        • +2

seems to be harder to find non-refurb stock of Pro models after the next version is released

    • -7

      I'm waiting for the 15.

I heard it has a built in FM radio.

      • +5

What are your downvote upvote statistics?

        • +25

          Why would I care?

        • +7

This isn't reddit, my Jv aint no karma w'ore…

      • I heard the largest hard drive on Samsungs “flagship” is a quarter of the iPhones - and now there’s no SD slot, so it’s fixed to 256GB max

        • we still talking about phones right?

        • Does the flagship iPhone come with 4TB of storage?

    • +2

While it'll likely trigger a further price drop on older phones, the 13 Pro was still better than the 14 and I imagine the 14 pro will remain better than the 15. If someone really wants to keep a lightning port it'll be a decent option.

With the rumours of an increase in price of the 15, I wouldn't expect the 14 pro to be under $1400 anytime soon. If it is, I'm jumping on one.

    • True. That said, may be worth it still for those who would prefer to save $250 - $300 for the equivalent model vs the iPhone 15 Pro (which according to most tech experts, is not going to be much diff aside from the usual slightly improved processor/camera). Though this time there is USB-C too

Also wouldn't be surprised to see all model prices increase vs iphone 14 prices, so saving could end up being $300 - $400 which may be worthwhile for some

  • +2

    when 256gb?

  • +2

Hodling for Pro Max 256gb !!

  • Yes pls - also my wish list - hoping preorders for 15 are price friendly -

    • +7

This is Apple we are talking about here. Price friendly, I think not. The 15 will be more expensive

      • Yea I can only imagine 15 Pro (6.1in) will startt at AU$1799 (under the current 14 Pro Max price of AU$1899), and the (rumoured) 15 Ultra to start at AU$1999

        • If the price increase hits Australia, expect $2499 for a 256GB 15 Pro Max

          • @linkindan: Holy sh!t, that's going to be hard for me to hide that price tag from the Mrs

            • @starspawn: Yeah, I wasn’t happy either but I need the upgrade.

It is possible the price increase doesn’t hit Australia, or if it does that it doesn’t hit us as hard as the US. The US didn’t get an increase on the 14 series, whereas international markets did.

            • +1

@starspawn: Actually, something I forgot about - there was a rumour a little while back the Pro models will ditch the 128GB hard drives.
So theoretically, the lowest price of a 15 Pro Max will still be AU$2099 but with a 256GB hard drive instead of 128

  • +7

Smartphone prices are getting ridiculous. It looks like Apple’s iPhone Pro series may start at $2k in not too distant future.

    • +15

True but the worst are the almost as expensive Android premium phones which lose manufacturers hardware and software support very quickly.

If you buy this iPhone 14 Apple will support it for probably 6-8 years and maybe more going by their history

      • Agree, iPhone software support is quite good.

      • +1

It amazes me that people actually buy things like $2,500 folding phones. Breaks easily, won't get great support, can be bought for $1k after 12 months.

But then people will buy the vision pro even though it's not targeted at home users and there'll be a consumer version for $1,500 in a couple of years. People are generally pretty dumb.

    • yea my macbook is under 2k lol

  • -4

Who spends $1600 on a mobile phone? Pointless.

    • +5

These days they’re advanced digital cameras, a computer in your pocket and a bunch of other tech with a “phone” feature.

    • +10

      $1600 for a device used ~5 hours/day for 4 years = 22c/hour
plus the better experience afforded by a more expensive phone + better cameras + ecosystem integration vs cheaping out on $500 hphone that lasts 2-3 years

      • +1

Next minute zoomers wonder why they can't afford property. Always gotta have the latest accessories.

        • +3

Bruh how was buying that $50k house like in 1980s?

          • +3

            @Spets: I bought in 2020 as a millennial. Still don't buy $1000+ accessories.

            • @Trippelsewe: I don't think that's the biggest factor in housing affordability but I do think they deserve to be exploited if their spending habits are as such.

      • the 22c/hour threw me off. I'm not sure if discount for me or not :D

      • +2

22c per hour sounds damn expensive when you put it that way

      • Unlikely you'll use it for 4 years. Most people trade in and update every 2 years.

        • Had Oneplus 5 2017-2021 and then i got iHphone 13 Pro

    • +1

Millions of people all over the world are buying high end iOS and Android devices, hence companies are making big fat margins on it.

    • +3

Most people cant afford the best food, the best flights, the best house, the best cars, the best clothes etc etc

But for 2K you can get the best phone money can buy. Rich A-listers cannot have a better phone than the 14 Pro Max

      • -1

Sure they can, get an Android.
Being serious, I think Apple have good hardware for the price but I don't need the best and refurb has done me well for phones and BT headphones in recent years.

I miss the days where I could get a great phone for $400, replaceable battery, big screen and kept up with the best premium devices.

It will be interesting to see what's next, the processors are plenty fast, the screens are plenty big, the need to go new is getting less appealing as the prices climb.

        • It will be interesting to see what's next

          Apple Vision Pro

          • @Gdsamp: Isn't that like $5k in Australia and you would still need an Apple device to power it?

            • @Caped Baldy: $6k and it’s a standalone device that needs no other accessories to work out of the box - it can however pair to your existing hardware and duplicate the screens and usability inside the visionOS (IE, it will not only screen mirror your nearby MacBook, but you can operate it with your eyes and hands in VR)

        • I bought an Android tablet to use solely as a point of sales system - out of the box, 24GB of space used with useless bloatware and adware

Had to root the system to delete it all and get some level of usability out of it

      • +1

Well, couple of flaws in your argument. Sure it's the best phone in the world… for the next six months until they bring out a slightly better one. I don't see many people bragging about having an iPhone 11 nowadays.

And that leads to the second point. The fact you link a mobile phone with "rich A-listers" is a bit sad. Why do you care what mobile phone Tom Cruise or Taylor Swift has?

      • This ⬆️

“What's great about this country is America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you can know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good.”

        ― Andy Warhol

  • Accessories still on lightning… might wait for everything to be on usb c and switch over. Still have to carry lightning to charge AirPods, no?

    • Can charge AirPods wireless at home

      • +1

Same can be said for iPhone - wireless charging. Feel that this lightning vs usb c only relevant for data transfer speeds and not charging imho.

      • Can charge AirPods wirelessly anywhere, with a MagSafe powerbank

  • -3

Three pixel 7's plus a case you can buy for this price, just saying;)

    • +5

i dont get the hype around that phone. its the most returned and warranty claimed phone at the jbhifi store i work at lol. 3x the headache of an iphone for a third of the cost. there are better motorola phones at the price point of $500.

      • Is there a common fault when customers return their faulty phone?

        • +1

its usually overheating. sometimes sim issues, and general frustrations from customers. usually spawn within 90 days so ppl are entitled to a full refund rather than a warranty repair, and they typically go back to samsung.

          • +2

@despavr: It's the second gen of their tensor chip. Not surprised they've still got issues. They're a few years away at least from being even 90% of apple's build quality and reliability and I saw that as an android user.

            • @Caped Baldy: And Tensor is basically repackaged Exynos. Google is probably better off using Snapdragon but they need to go through this development/iterative process to catch up to Apple.

  • Bit off topic, but why does Apple Aus don’t sell refurbished iPhones? I mean in their own store Apple.com/au ??
Is it because Apple Aus cares about other 2nd hand sellers likes in eBay, greengadgets, mobilefederation, ozmobiles, mazuma, cexwebuy etc

I think Apple U S A sells genuine refurb iPhones.

    • Maybe all their s/h phones are sent overseas for refurbishment and sold where they get the best price.

      Not here,

    • They sell them via marketplaces and some authorised resellers, probably works out cheaper for them not having to warehouse them (I’m guessing)

  • -1

With new iphone 15, apparently their usb-c is some unique graded cable only that is going to be expensive and no generic branded usb-c will work with it.

    • +5

Rumours are fun, but facts are better

If Apple were to do this, it would be circumventing EU regulations which would negate them using USB-C instead of Lightning. Further, the EU have publicly stated that if Apple were to do this their devices would not be able to be sold in their markets.

The truth is that MAYBE they’ll limit features such as Thunderbolt 3, and the associated higher speeds, to Pro models but of course this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

  • 128GB is unacceptable. And if it’s just for messaging and calls you don’t need an iPhone.
