Finally, these boards are commanding the prices they should have done at launch.

    • +2

This is still basically horrible covid chip shortage pricing. Seems like a cool board though.

      • +5

I dunno, $200 is about what I'd expect to pay for a mid tier B-series board with decent VRMs and Bluetooth/AX Wifi onboard.

        • +9

I think Pepperidge farm remembers b450 tomahawks going for like $100. But I guess the b450 pro carbon is a bit more in this class, fairly good price I guess.

          • +7

@Budju: I remember buying a B450M Mortar Max for like $70 off Amazon. How times have changed.

            • @Void: Yeah i got one for that much XD

            • @Void: That was probably pre-covid no doubt. Still a fair price of you need one.

Mine is still going strong from 2020, paid a premium then but would easily recommend these boards. Claimed the price protection drops anyway $179 down to $107.

              • @G-rig: I think it was around mid-late 2020. It was a very nice board. Sold the PC as I stopped gaming and just switched to a laptop and a docking station, but I might build a new one as I am now starting to get into music creation and production and need the horsepower for VSTs.

                • @Void: Sounds good, new build 😁

          • @Budju: B450 is a pretty cheap chipset, and were sold at near cost because retailers just had to get rid of stocks that they had to buy in from suppliers. B550 off the gate was already more expensive due to the higher quality trace needed for PCIe 4, and B650 even more-so because of DDR5.

To compare, low end LGA1700 H610/B660 DDR5 boards were complete trash and the RAM barely can run past 4800mhz because of low PCB quality, so they end up performing worse than DDR4 while costing more + price of RAM.

            • @[Deactivated]: B450 mortar max is great, I've had gigabytes fail for no reason.

No point buying something too high end.

the aorus version is still $199 at pc byte

    • just had my ds3h die on me, im livid.

      • Take mine, it’s a piece of junk, BIOS is a mess and doesn’t work properly with my RTX 4080z

        • mine is back with MSY who have sent it to gigabyte.

BSOD, read IO doesnt work, rear io and GPU only work at boot and now when you replug in anything.

          dogshit mobo.

          • @Carrian: Same, dropped it back today. GPU would only work after rebooting with very old BIOS (which had the big security hole), however no matter which BIOS I use it will not connect at higher than PCIe 1.1 x8.

Picked up an Asrock from Scorptec after leaving UMart/MSY, updated the BIOS and it’s at PCIe 4.0 x16 and works perfectly, RDR2 benchmarks at twice the speed. PBO overclocking is so simple compared to the Gigabyte. Should’ve ignored the Hardware Unboxed review and gone with this as planned in the first place.

We should swap RMA reference numbers to put pressure on MSY/Gigabyte to just refund us.

            • @SolitaryMan: Im scared to buy another board in case they repair and return with no refund.

              • @Carrian: Yeah, after weeks of messing around back and forth with Gigabyte support the thought of at least 3-4 weeks without my new build working tipped me over the line, and I figured worst case I have a better mobo and will either sell the Gigabyte or keep it aside for a budget build down the track (will ditch the 7600 for a next-gen X3D, can put the old CPU to use).

Given their recent BIOSes are less compatible I also figure odds are they won’t fix it!

                • @SolitaryMan: Welp.

                  You’ve bought a new board.

                  It works.

I’m no genius, but this points to the DS3H/bios being the issue.

Should be entitled a refund off that alone imo.

I’m in no rush to get a new board, but I’ll be getting one with WiFi and Bluetooth.

                  The TUF board looks sweet.

                  • @Carrian: Yeah, I was going to pick up a cheap A620 chipset mobo but the Umart I was at didn’t have much in stock, so I also added wifi and Bluetooth, went with the AsRock B650M PG Riptide Wifi, very happy. Reviews were mostly very positive, good VRMs and more than enough headers.

Also very happy with the service I’ve received at Scorptec, all the staff are actually friendly and helpful, the store I visited last night on my way home from UMart was nice and clean and didn’t stink like UMart, and they were great with a change of mind return on an AIO cooler recently - an impulse purchase when there for something else that didn’t actually fit my case - didn’t even try to get me to buy another one, advised that from their experience my case works well with air, especially my existing cooler, and refunded me.

The Asus boards in this range all seemed to have basic old-school VRM so I didn’t consider them, especially given their dodgy tactics around their BIOSes letting you cook your Ryzen 7000-series to death.

          • @Carrian: I wouldn't buy a Gigabyte again, much prefer MSI.
Had a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3P-B3 L1155 P67 Chipset back in 2011 and whilst it lasted a while there was no explanation for it's failure (and bloody annoying to troubleshoot).

No doubt some people do as the higher models have onboard wifi, but much prefer a solid wifi6 & BT pcie card anyway.

              @G-rig: Update (@SolitaryMan)

Bought a MSI MAG B650M MORTAR WIFI for $220 from MSY.

              Works perfectly.

Going to push for a refund over the phone tomorrow.

      • +1

Yeah, saw this but didnt proceed as this dont have Wi-Fi..

    • It is here too

  • +5

Just as a heads up these gigabyte boards for AM5 are known to have coil whine.

    • That could be the reason why my setup whines so bad…

  • i had the full ATX one of these and was a solid enough board
Recently picked up the aorus (higher tier in the gigabyte lineup) for $209 shipped from pcbyte

  • +1

I recently bought a gigabyte Ds3h and it has horrible constant high pitched coil whine.

  • Are there any plans for a new line if chipsets for AM5?

    • havent heard but not sure what more they could add at the moment
PCIE5 ssd and gpu slots and DDR5 are still the latest standard which would be the main reasons for a change

  • Never buy gen 1 AMD / Intel anything. Calmly waiting for AM5 8000 CPU's and Motherboard refreshes to finally jump to next gen.

    • +1

Good idea. I just bought a 4090, and was considering upgrading my R5 5600 (16gb 2400Mhz ram). Not only will the motherboard refreshes be worth it, but (hopefully) Gen 5 ssd's come down in price and can be taken advantage of more, as well as DDR5 advancement.

      • -1

Hard to take advantage of gen 5 ssds when software can't even fully utilise gen 3 ones. Direct storage is still barely found, worse adoption than ray tracing had 2 years in.

    • Would 8000 CPU's count as a next generation, or would they be "gen 1" of their kind?

      • AM5 gen 2

        • Oh yeah lol good point!

Personally I'm impressed with the performance of the 7800X3D at the moment

        • Pity its not planned for a release until mar 24 at the earliest!

          • @XCelR8: Yea because Intel has dropped the ball a little, AMD has stretched it's release schedule by 6 months. Also the 8000 series AMD is said to be a very decent upgrade almost making it the true 'next gen cpu' we all thought the 7000 series would have been. Can't wait.

    • I'm not entirely sure about your reasoning, but it's evident that the B650 chipset has been designed to support at least two generations. The only aspect that might be reasonably explained is the pricing, considering that CPUs are now being upgraded on an annual basis with below 10% improvement.

never any mini itx deals these days :/

    • Gigabyte released the A620I AX last month in the US and it will be around AU $200 when it lands here

AM5 ITX will not be heavily pushed until AMD release the 8000 series of Strix APU's

      • AM5 ITX will not be heavily pushed until AMD release the 8000 series of Strix APU's

How come? Isn't the 7800X3D a SFFPC-enthusiast favourite for its low power draw/thermals?

        • +2

Enthusiasts make a lot of noise but actual ITX sales are driven by people who use the iGPU's in the APU's to build lower end HTPC's, small scale NAS and SFF office machines

  • +1

    Gotta love that PS/2 port.

  • +1

Cool, now just need a Ryzen 7600 at < $300

    • There's still so much stock of Ryzen 5XXX on the market, gonna be a while.

  • Most of the back panel USB ports are USB 2.0. That may be a killer for many people.

  • I bought one of these and as per most other people it has coil whine. My PC is under my desk and I use speakers when gaming so its completely unnoticeable. But still, I wouldn't get one if your PC was on your desk.
