Well my Ozbargain google fu has failed me today ! Penalty bin for me :-(

      • +8

JB Hi-Fi would be cheaper if you stack with discounted Gift Cards (ie. Ultimate Gift Cards, etc).

        • Anyone know if another ultimate GC sale is coming up?

    • Maybe this has been the cheapest that it's been without the use of a membership coupon. In other words the deal is available to every one in the public.

      • +2

For what’s it worth, it’s even cheaper now.

It’s not too difficult to find some one with access to studentbeans for a code.

        • Nice. That's an amazing deal.

  • Oh wow.
I sold my 4XL for $299 the other day

Might also sell by pixel 4a 5G burner and buy this

    • +3

4a 5G is better. This one is ok but I am never buying these tensor pixels again. Its worse than snapdragons.

      • That's typically how a newly developed chipset works

      • Can you elaborate?

        • Battery saving

        • +11

Tensor is generally worse than the top-tier Snapdragon counterparts from the same year, whether it be performance, efficiency etc etc. That being said though, the G1 (in the 6a) is still much better than the 765G in the 4a 5G in terms of performance, and probably the only real upside for the 4a is potentially battery life (but it's probably negligible). With support for the 4a ending towards the end of the year, there's no reason to use it over the 6a unless you are seriously strapped for cash, or you're feeling nostalgic.

          • +1

@Halsmich: What other phone will you suggest for $400 ?

            • @BinnyC: Pixel 7 $500.. Done.
              Or buy a pixel 5 $200-300.

            • +2

@BinnyC: I mean I use a 6a myself lmao, so don't really have any other recommendations. I personally think Pixels are the best option purely because they're the only phones that can run GrapheneOS, so it's just a matter of picking whichever one's in your budget.

      • +3

Obviously it's worse than Snapdragon, it's brand new. It's absolutely not bad though. Don't be fooled, Tensor will run whatever you throw at it with ease. Is it quite as efficient? No, but that will change overtime. This is just how it goes with new chips. In a few more generations it'll be quite on-par with others, I think

        • googles changing chip manufacturers i hear

          • @shroomish: They definitely aren't. Gigantic waste of money to give up on Tensor so early. Besides, leaks confirm the 8 series will be Tensor G3. And Google leaks are almost always correct.

            • @dongltron: "According to a report by The Information, Google originally planned to replace the modified Samsung Exynos chipsets it uses in Pixel phones with a “Redondo” chip designed in-house sometime in 2024. However, the report claims that Google has now pushed that planned release window back to 2025 and will instead introduce a new custom processor codenamed “Laguna.”

Still Tensor, manufactured by TMSC apparently?

              • @shroomish: Ah, I see. I thought you meant they'd be reverting to Snapdragon ot something. That's more plausible. Hopefully it's even better.

    • +3

Keep in mind free google photo uploads for life with Pixel 4a 5G. Might be worth hanging on to.

      • Wait, so no free unlimited lifetime photo uploads? I miss my Nexus 6p

        • +1

Pixel 5 is the last one with unlimited photo uploads

          • +3

@mmd: If you're rooted, you can install a module called Pixelify GPhotos that unlocked free uploads for free by essentially spoofing your device to make it think it's a Pixel 5. If you need those uploads, there ya go.

          • @mmd: Can you still buy pixel 5 and get free unlimited google photos? I am willing to spend that amount for unlimited photos upload and not even use the phone.

            • +1

@amsaini15: I could have kept mine for a backup but sold for 350$ to go towards the pixel 7.

never even use up the 500gb storage plan anyway. I think most people find 15GB google isn't enough for email, drive etc. I imported a bunch of photos that weren't all taken on pixels so who knows but some were taken for sure with pixel 1, 3xl and 5.

Ps. Who would root or jailbreak these days.. glad to be done with that crap and loading roms like in the old XDA days.

              • @G-rig: Thanks. I might look into buying pixel 5 then.

                • @amsaini15: I'd get a pixel 7 for $500
How many photos are you going to take with it?
Everyone goes onabout the pixel 1 for some reason re: storage.
There is always the VPN trick as well for cloud.

                • +1

@amsaini15: Yes, tho bear in mind it is unlimited storage saver mode for pixel 2 to 5.
Original quality photos counts towards the backup.

Unlimited original quality free backup is for the pixel 1 only - I save all my RAW/photos history and go pro footage on here

@g-rig Its really easy to upload with pixel 1. I just plug into my desktop and drag the files over and wait for it to upload. Some ppl opt to use a file sync app tho it means the pixel 1 needs to be on. I turn mine off once done to preserve battery life.

                  • @mmd: I would have thought the photos have to be taken with the pixel 1 (and the full quality back then is much lower than with new phones).

                  • +1

@mmd: What's the point though of saving all your photos like that? Do you ever look at them or use them again? Serious Q. If you think about it, there is probably 5 pics per year that's worth keeping. Print em out and hang em.

                    • @Naigrabzo: Good having them all in google photos, very easy to find by year and search etc
Probably not designed for TB of raw data and crap, just what you take with your phone.

                      • @G-rig: True. I have a pixel 7 so it's cool how they use AI to search pics etc.

The quesiton was more about why keep so many pics in the first place? Seems so pointless as you will never look at them, print or use them.

                        • @Naigrabzo: Dunno the answer to that - don't take any then haha. I don't keep 10 of the same thing or anything.

                          • @G-rig: Same here. I only look at these pics occasionally and I wouldn't miss them when I eventually lose them. Nothing wrong with keeping em but I feel that it would amount to digital hoarding. Something to think about.

                            • @Naigrabzo: @Naigrabzo @G-rig
I almost lost my go pro shoot of a holiday on a SD card so I'm scarred from that.
Photos of sport, babies, kids, weddings, birthdays, holidays.
And most recently we needed to find family photos of the family member who passed away.

Also, I don't have a offsite server so this is my backup option should my HDD dies/ gets stolen. Alternate option to either pay for cloud storage or burn them onto a DVD 😂

        • Oh wow I might check it out. I know pixel experience is around. Is pixelify GPhotos just for pixel 5? Or can it spoof to think it's OG?

          • +1

@mmd: It can spoof any Pixel afaik, and any Pixel can use it.

            • +1

@dongltron: it can be used on other handsets as well, not just pixels.

Pixel is miles ahead of TCL phone.

    • Which model TCL are you meaning?

Been a few deals on TCL phones lately.

edited battery capacity and cameras, google bard got it wrong.

    • +2

Looking at it side by side the 6a is not too inferior. Notably the processor is only a bit slower in real world tests.

On DXO mark the pixel 7 camera scores 140 vs 122 for the 6a.

      • I personally think the upgrades between Pixel models are insignificant in real world usage.

      • The camera is a lot better, and worth the extra 100$ for better memory and CPU as well. Not sure why they are comparing the 6a not the 7a. The pixel 6 wasn't the best either.

However I've heard they won't be offering the 'a' models with the pixel 8 as the models are a bit too similar.

    • +3

Great summary table showing the 6A is absolutely serviceable, have loved mine over the last 12 months.
Waiting for the 8 now which will be 6.17-inch size screen too, hate all the size creep over the years so happy to see it has gotten a tiny bit smaller next gen.

      • Even pixel 5 is serviceable I'm typing right now. Nothing beats unlimited HQ uploads. I still got magic eraser heh

        • the voice dictaphone is A LOT better on the pixel 7 than pixel 5. Can hear me better and is way more accurate.
It must be new software or something. Saves typing as much at times :)

I loved the pixel 5 though in terms of size and weight. Don't need that glossy slippy gorilla glass finish just to put a case on it.
The loud speakers were better too, but the earpiece speaker goes louder on the Pixel 7 (that was annoying AF when vol all the way up and can barely hear when out and about.

          • @G-rig: I see but we have Google Pixel buds deal that solves the speaker problems

            • +1

              @neonlight: just do that

              • @G-rig: Yeah the cheaper alternative until you know pixel 8 gets cheaper

                • @neonlight: Just wait for the pixel 9.
My pixel 7 cost me nothing so will do me for a whilst (and skip the 8 just like I skipped the 4 and 6).

    • However in term of real usage not much difference on photos unless you compare to pixel 7 pro then we are talking

    • There's really not much between them.

  • +4

Bargain, I love my 6a. Only wish it had wireless charging

  • +2

good performance for the price but 60Hz is ancient in 2023

    • -8

      So is 1080 x 2400 resolution

      • do you mean 720?

      • It's literally pointless having anything higher than that on a device that fits in your hand.

    • +4

      Good for battery tho.

      • +1

it's battery life isn't anything spectacular even with only 60Hz. It just lasts one day.

        • +3

Yes, if anything LTPO panels that can do 120Hz+ offer better battery life as they can ramp down below 60Hz most of the time.

      • +2

        https://www.phonearena.com/reviews/google-pixel-6a-vs-pixel-…

The battery life according to Phone Arena is almost identical to the Pixel 7.

In our independent battery tests, we see that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6a last about the same time. Both scored around 9 hours of video playback over Wi-Fi, which is a decent score, and both had nearly 14 hours on our web browsing test. This suggests both of these phones will comfortably last you through one day, but not much more, so overnight charges are necessary.

The somewhat mediocre battery life is due to the SOC that was developed in collaboration with Samsung, the Tensor is basically a highly modified version of the samsung Exynos 2100 / Exynos 2300 and it shares a flaw in that it's not very power efficient.

That's one of the reason Google actually dropped Samsung and will partner with a different chipmaker (2 years from now) Pixel phone / smartwatch, and that's most likely going to be TSMC.

    • +2

99% of people wouldn't even know or realize

      • +1

That was the same argument for high refresh rate desktop monitors, mechanical keyboards and SSDs.

Those people that were early adopters trying to convince everyone else it was worth it and now it's just normal. For me having 120hz on my phone was absolutely the best upgrade I ever did.

  • +2

Decent price, stack with discounted gift cards!

Google Store will price match - you order from them, contact them for price match, and they refund the difference once the item ships.

Good to stack with 10% back with Google Store 2TB plans…

    • Would I be able to add the student beans discount to the Google store and get it even cheaper?

      • No

      • yes brings it down to 339

  • +8

any links to the full catalogue?

  • Can combine with gift cards for more "savings."

  • +3

Interesting to note that MKBHD did a comparison on 16 phone's cameras last year (including flagships) and the P6A took the title, even ahead of the P7

    • +8

Isn't that the one where he posts two photos to Twitter, and people vote? It's not really a comparison, it's a cup knockout competition like the world cup!

      • +1

I think it is. Still impressive for such non-flagship specs though.
Software driven imaging seems to work, very happy with the cam on my P4A
