      I am going to assume you are talking about Coles Mastercard gift cards, not the Coles gift cards that can only be used at Coles…

      I tried directly using a physical Coles Mastercard gift card a few hours ago, but I got a message saying that it was declined by the issuer. Considering my gift card has sufficient balance and the MCC for Giftz.com.au (which should be 5947) does not appear to be a blacklisted MCC on physical Coles Mastercard gift cards, I suspect InComm has blocked Giftz.com.au as a merchant.

      I also tried linking the Coles Mastercard gift card to PayPal and then using PayPal as the payment method at checkout, but the gift card is not appearing as a payment source on the PayPal checkout screen for me.

      I expect InComm to also decline any direct transactions for Giftz.com.au on digital Coles Mastercard gift cards, and it would be a mystery as to whether the PayPal route would work.

              I just tried a second physical Coles Mastercard gift card, but I am stuck on the "Check your account balance before trying this card again" cycle, and I have tried retrying eight times now. This gift card definitely has sufficient balance, so I have no idea what is going on for me!

                  It would be hardly surprising, considering InComm already blocked direct payments from Coles Mastercard gift cards on Giftz.com.au. Giftz.com.au is operated by Blackhawk Network (InComm’s major rival in the gift card business) after all…

                    i think that this is PayPal blocking too many/much transactions, because it's also happened with Post Billpay, which can allow one to avoid credit card surcharges when paying bills

        @WookieMonster May I please ask what is the benefit of converting the Coles MC gift card into an Activ Visa card? Is the Activ Visa less likely to be hacked? I haven't bought the Activ one before
        P.S. Can the Activ Visa be used on ShopBack to buy gift cards?

          One benefit is being able to use in store if your Coles MC is digital one.

          The main reason is that you can add an Activ Visa gift card to a mobile wallet, which makes it much easier to redeem it when compared to a Coles Mastercard gift card.

          • You can use this online at merchants that accept Apple Pay or Google Wallet (or Samsung Wallet, although I do not think that is actually a thing). I find that some merchants (e.g. Prezzee) are more likely to accept payments from an Activ Visa gift card if it is being used from Apple Pay or Google Wallet, rather than if I tried to use it directly. That may be a particularly useful option if you see an online merchant not accepting PayPal, but accepting Apple Pay and/or Google Wallet.

          • I have been to a couple of cafes where they only accepted contactless payments. I have also seen a handful of parking machines and public transport ticket machines only accept contactless payments (and cash). Have fun trying to use a Coles Mastercard gift card at any of those.

          • The last time I tried to use a Coles Mastercard gift card at a Square terminal, I got an error message on the first three swipes saying card read error before the fourth swipe went through fine. The merchant had no idea what was going on and was getting increasingly suspicious of me with each swipe…

            So what are some of the other pros/cons of converting Coles cards (physical and digital) to Activ cards in addition to the obvious one above about in-store transactions?

            I have brainstormed a few below but are there any other major ones @WookieMonster ?

            • Coles cards can be used to pay the ATO whereas Activ cards cannot be
            • Coles cards can be used to pay for certain gift cards at Woolworths and Big W whereas Activ cards cannot be
            • Coles cards can be used to pay for gift cards on the Cashrewards gift card store whereas Activ cards cannot be
            • Coles cards can be used to pay for gift cards on giftz.com.au whereas Activ cards cannot be
            • Activ cards can be used to pay for certain gift cards at Coles whereas Coles cards cannot be
            • Activ cards are subjected to the $400/10 minute limit at supermarkets (whereas Coles cards are not?)

              • Activ cards can be added to Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet, whereas Coles cards cannot. (This is particularly useful where you have a merchant that only accepts Apple Pay and/or Google Wallet - e.g. MILKRUN - or you have a merchant not accepting swipe payments in-person.)

              Some clarifications:

              Coles cards can be used to pay for gift cards on the Cashrewards gift card store whereas Activ cards cannot be

              I suspect True Rewards blocks all Visa cards not supporting 3-D Secure or all prepaid Visa cards. I have not been able to use Vanilla Visa gift cards, Go-To Visa gift cards, OnlyONE Visa gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards or True Rewards’ own Visa gift card on Cashrewards’ gift card portal.

              Coles cards can be used to pay for gift cards on giftz.com.au whereas Activ cards cannot be

              Uhhh I’m not so sure.

              Direct payments from Coles Mastercard gift cards are blocked on Giftz.com.au by InComm, but at least you may be okay with going via PayPal.

              I actually do not know whether Activ Visa gift cards are blocked on Giftz.com.au, especially if you go via PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Wallet. I know that direct payments from OnlyONE Visa gift cards have worked on Giftz.com.au in the past.

                @WookieMonster: I just added a physical $100 one right before payment via PP and it worked. The one having $150 spent on Prezzee via PP is always disappearing for Giftz payment, which makes me think it is about risk control by PP.

                It is a risk for PP to authorise $200+ on unverified cards by the same issuer from many users in one day.

      Just checked, and the "pay in 4" areas shows $62.99 which means the total is 251.96 and this is why people is getting the error on the balance !!!!

    Found the solution!
    1. checkout
    2. Add promo code
    3. click on PayPal - should see $62.99 in the pay in 4 section
    4. close the PayPal window
    5. refresh the page (F5)
    6. proceed to check out
    7 click on PayPal - should now see 62.50 in the pay in 4 section
    8 pay with the coles master card.

      It didn't work for me as the pay in 4 is no longer appear in my Paypal after previously clicked and said not eligible. Then I keep pressing F5 and then went back to the site, click Paypal again and choose the Coles MC gc, it worked as a charm. Got the card now and put in my Google wallet. Sweet

    They have a new deal promo code DADS, on page it says reduce purchase fee from $4.95 to $1, but on checkout it's showing $3.95 after applying code, and "contact us" page wont submit my enquiry :(

          I tested buy Activ $100+1 by Coles MC $100 card, then converted to supermarket $100.
          obviously I don't have to buy activ first, but just for test to see if it can be tracked.

          I also bought from previous deal with $1.95 fee no code, they were tracked by 3% SB.
          no exp on this cashback yet, it said 3months, will see if ture.

          lost means actually "loss", not the unrealised cashbacks lol.
          Interestingly my orders at both the $0 and the $1 deals were mostly tracked, but the tracked value was based on the total purchase value - ORIGINAL purchase fee. I.e. a $250 fifa card awards cashback on $248.05 and a $250 dads card is based on $245.05. Very funny.
          Not sure if they are going to be approved though so I have mostly bought the $1.95 fifa card without any codes.
