Seems interesting and for $10 it seems cheap enough to play around with on the weekend.
Surprisingly at this price point there’s even an app to follow it around.
Gave it a punt

Economical Affordability !Monthly internet Data Connection Cost of $8.99 or $5.03USD(10S Instant Updates, collects data every second, analyzes, and sends update to the server every 10s) depending on the plan you choose for unlimited usage worldwide with no contract, activation, or cancellation fees.

    • +1

$17.99p/m according to one of the images.

    • Oh I didn’t notice that, still seems alright if it works well, $9pm for peace of mind for your car

      • +9

$9pm for peace of mind for your car

        cheaper to use an AirTag

        • +1

Won't they be alerted if airtag present

          • @asa79: You can disable the sound.

          • @asa79: They need an iphone to be alerted.

            • +2

@Its4me: Not necessarily. My samsung s23u notifies me of an airtag nearby

            • +2

@Its4me: Google Play updated so androids are alerted now too.

          • @asa79: just chuck it in the boot

          • @asa79: cant you just hide it under the car or deep in the engine block ?

You only need it to run between the car goes missing and when you notice it.

I would semi weld it into part of the frame.

            • +1

              @amzinguserman:

              deep in the engine block

Yikes - wouldn't want to find one there! Don't want the engine to blow up now do we? Nor would the airtag work (neither would under the car work that well, remember it's got to be picked up by passing iPhones).

Looks like you're after a more serious setup so I'd check out a hardwired tracker. You won't have to recharge it.

            • @amzinguserman: Battery needs change once a year

          • @asa79: Yes they will. With iPhones and android phones now.
And that's not necessarily a bad thing. If the tag is hidden they will have a half assed look for it and ditch the car for fear of being tracked and found.

        • +1

I agree the monthly subscription cost should be in the listing here otherwise $9.99 one time cost is a half truth hence a partial lie honestly.

On another note Air tags are not only expensive but, require an apple account too, ( I really do not want to make an apple account) But given how many apple users there are around world, very safe to assume air tag tracking is going to be reliable

          • +1

@USER DC: Monthly subscription cost is in USD, so could vary as AUD goes down and would be subject to international transaction fees.

        • +1

Even cheaper with Tile, different types, eg. small sticker to hide or wallet card.
The thieves can detect the AirTags, find them & disable them easier.

          • @taki:

            Even cheaper with Tile

Except significantly less chance of getting it detected because of much smaller user base.

          • +3

@taki: I've got a Tile somewhere. Stopped using it because it's so bloody useless.

      • +3

If your car is stolen you want it insured and hopefully never found.

    • +2

What happened to the good old days when you could just ring them and say "where the (profanity) are you".

  • +3

Discussion last time when it was $15. One of those 5 star reviews on the Amazon site looks fake.

@internet-stranger any feedback from the purchase?

    • +4

You can swap the sim card (it’s under a sticker) but I’ve had no luck overriding the URL to point to a different GPS service.

      • +3

I bought one for a play. I’ll see if I can get it to work with TracCar

      • Is it required a sub to work?

        Edit: found the answer below

        • Yes. The FACTORYALL# command has been removed/disabled in the firmware

          • @internet-stranger: How do we reset to allow use of our own sim without this command?

            • @Waynes world: You can’t. You can swap the SIM and use the SMS commands. But you are unable to use a different tracking server.

            • @Celebraces: Where did you find that command?
Also the APN change is fine. It’s the Server URL I am unable to change.

              SERVER,0,1.1.1.1,5023,0#
              Returns:
ERROR:The domain name or IP is locked, not allowed to modify

          • @internet-stranger: I managed to get this to work with a self hosted traccar setup

the FACTORYALL# command didnt apppear to work, but a FACTORY# SMS command did.

Then i was able to set the APN with a spare vodafone SIM i had
            APN,live.vodafone.com#

            set timezone
            GMT,e,10,0#

            set server
            SERVER,1,traccarurl,5023,0#

You can also use the following SMS for diagnosis to help identify things. Only send one sms command at a time, multiple line sms dont work
            STATUS#
            PARAM#
            GPRSSET#

HBT,1,1# will set the device to send its location every 1 minute. This can be customised, eg. HBT,5,5# is for every 5 minutes

WHERE# will send back an SMS with the GPS location data
URL# will send back an sms with the google maps url of the location

            RESET# will reboot the device

VERSION# will send back the firmware version on the device.
            Mine had Version: S20_4G_LA_V01_Oct 22 2022_13:49:35

I will continue to test this over the next week or so sending data to my traccar instance every minute. But so far (the past hour) it's been great.

I will be buying a few more of these i think, hopefully they are as easy to change. Otherwise i might have to crack it open and see if i can attach a jtag and either rip the firmware of write another one to it.

            • +1

@SingMeASong: Interesting. The FACTORY# command fails for me as well.

@celebraces found the key to unlock the device a different way. I’m just about to publish all the info on GitHub. I’ll link shortly. But it has all the drivers, SMS commands etc… I’ve managed to find.

Edit: sorry, to be clear the FACTORY# command clears all settings except the server for me. And the server command remains locked.

              • @internet-stranger: Interesting. I'm keen on this also, happy to help where I can.

Did you turn the tracker on with the original SIM card in it?

I removed the SIM as soon as i got the device and before i turned it on. Thinking it might auto activate or phone home.

                • +1

@SingMeASong: Huge dump of info here: https://github.com/bohdan-s/WanWay-Tech-S20
I’ll add some more instructions/getting started stuff shortly.
I also have a private TracCar (GPS server) instance I can add people to, just PM me)

                • +2

@SingMeASong: I removed the SIM before powering on, and popped it in a phone. That was the key to getting the unlock code. Having worked with M2M sims before, I suspect they get a notification from the carrier that a SIM has been registered in the network, which triggers some SMS commands to set the APN and enable GPRS mode.

      • Do you know what make model the tracker is?

        • S20, I think this is the GPRS version

    • Internet stranger, meaning me?
Haven’t received it yet, was planning on messing about with it later in the week .

  • +5

An airtag or similar seems like a better option

    • This. Works a treat

    • +3

unfortunately, it alerts the car thief that an airtag is following

      • +1

        Possibly a feature.

      • +4

        There's a DISCORD?

        • I'm in two and I forget which one's the more popular one

        • You need an Ozbargain Premium account to get an invite

  • +2

    What batteries does it use?

    Can it be harvested?

  • Bought one for my bugatti

  • +14

I have one of this bought for $10 lastime. The online tracking doesnt work if you dont pay but you can insert your own sim and text to the number and it will txt you back the position on google maps. not bad for $10 i use it in my uber care share car

    • +2

      @Jaduqimon
Can you please elaborate on this, what text message do you send to get back a location from the device?

      • +12

for this specific model you just text "URL#" and it will text you back the GPS co ordinates with a google maps link

        • +1

Ordered this deal, arrived today. Lifted the sticker on the back, swapped in Aldi 365 day sim. Texted URL#. Location comes back fast and accurate. Works well for this purpose. Thanks @Jaduqimon.

        • Do you have the other commands for sms for this? Or a link perhaps of the conplete command list?

    • -1

But if you plug your SIM in this GSM tracker, how can you use your phone?

      • +1

u buy another sim obviously… like ALDI or Amaysim with 365 day expiry and put that in the gps

        • u buy another sim obviously

Where is the saving or the better deal compared to what comes with this GSM tracker?

          • +4

@billadm: Im thinking you wont need to pay a monthly plan. Sounds like you would only need to have sms which could use prepaid credit.
You send the device sim an sms message with the details above, it messages you back via sms with co-ordinates. Very basic funcitonality without the actual plan but I guess it could still be useful for some. Im grabbing a couple to test. May not even need data on the sim unless it somehow makes the gps more accurate but I wouldnt think so.

            • +2

@toimedianz: no you do not need data. but even if you did the data it uses is very miniscule. I had it for over 6 month now and the data usage is < 5mb

    • Can you confirm if it works with local Sims as one review said it doesn't?

Not sure if it is also capable of SMS forwarding as it would be great to park a number while travelling overseas.

      • +2

I have an amaysim sim in it and it works.

  • Got one, worth a shot

  • -5

Save your money and get this instead
    https://www.sharkleathers.com.au/monimoto-smart-motorcycle-g…

ive got them in 2 vehicles, app and tracking work very well

  • -3

    Nice try CCP!

  • $10 to chuck it my bike while I try to sell it. Not a bad deal of you activate it after its stolen

  • I'm interested in something like this to track my movements on an overseas trip, ideally exportable to gpx or whatever. Can this do that?

    • +2

Perhaps use an app on your phone or get a garmin watch.

    • +2

Google Map can track your basic travelling footprints provided with a user-friendly report along with timelines

    • Strava, Fuelio but these will run on your phone. Unless you're asking about standalone devices?

  • Just get a Samsung smart tag or Apple air tag if your phone supports it. It can be used as a tracker, not as good as these trackers however less ongoing subscription fees etc

    • +1

you mean like about 99.9% of phones on the market?

    • air tag will warn them. this gps can be hidden

      • Agree. But you might get a small time to ascertain location.

      • hide the airtag, under the carpet stick, behind a panel, in the door card.

      • +1

Warn them? How if it’s hidden?

        • it alerts the person you are trying to track that there is an airtag near them if they also have an iphone or ios device

          • @Jaduqimon: Did not know this at all. That’s goofy as for a feature. I mean it makes sense but defeats its purpose at the same time.

    • Sub required

Almost all GSM trackers require a subscription.

      Sockpuppeting

Just curious, how do you know that?

      Expensive

I don't think so and your neg vote should be revoked.

  • -3

good way to check on the Mrs

    • Violation alert unless consent …

  • Need to charge it every month vs apple airtag once a year?

  • Buy now, regret later.

  • Review on Amazon: Does not work with local SIM https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/review/B0BN53G3WN/R27D85H3AJ…

    • @Jaduqimon said it works

    • +3

it doesnt work because to get the full feature of online tracking, you need to use their sim which you need to pay subscription for.

But if you are just happy with text responses from the device using SMS, then any sim will work. I can confirm this
