FYI the i7 is $110 more. Possibly worth the upgrade?

    • +3

Better processor, lesser screen quality. If you are mainly connected to a monitor, then could be a better option for some.

    • +4

i7 seems to be much better, with 2 more P cores and double the cache.
But 45%NTSC for the screen is simply nasty. Lower resolution is fine but that color gamut is pretty trash.
If you are using this laptop as a laptop don't choose the 45%NTSC screen, i5 would not cause a bottleneck for the 4050 anyway.

  • -1

    Only if its the 60

    • +4

Its more than fine. 4050m is ~20% slower than a 4060m, and only ~10% slower than a 3060m.

Considering you would hardly ever see machines with mux switch and well cooled & high powered -60m with this kind of screen at the price this is at. This is a good deal.

Unless my math is wrong with cashback this gets just below 1.2k which is more than a bargain for the performance.

  • +1

Nice specs, but better if the battery was high wH. 60Wh with a 15.6 QHD screen is going to drain quickly.

  • Wouldn't this be better?…if you not playing games

    • +1

Definitely. Gaming is the only reason to pick this one

    • got this and its pretty good. a bit slow with my 50 tabs open habit at 3440x1440 over 50hz hdmi.

    • Yeah but you shouldn't be looking at this laptop if your not gaming.

  • How solid is the plastic build?

    • I wont go drop testing it, but its not flimsy. Feels more solid than many of the other cheap gaming laptops.

    • Probably similar to thinkpads, these are even bulkier and heavy, I would take these over dell/hp anyday tho lelnovo know what they doing

  • Hey guys, I am considering a work laptop for my staff.

Do you guys know if this is too much for admin tasks?

I use a gaming laptop for my own, as it offers performance and normally good battery.

    Thanks.

    • +2

      gaming laptop
      good battery.

Pick one for good, and the other would be terribly bad

      • +1

There are exceptions but in general this is the case

        • never heard that exceptions…
so not sure how he said good battery life. probably he forgot the laptop was pluged in and thinking wow the battery last forever!

    • admin tasks? what's that? My company recently bought me a $10k workstation, as a power user. Depending on exactly what you're doing a Celeron based mini PC can do admin tasks.

    • This would be a poor fit for most business needs. Avoid anything with a discrete GPU, and high refresh rate screens, as they're both unnecessary and draw more power than SoC GPUs. Unless your staff member happens to fall into the niche of needing a discrete GPU but not needing one powerful enough to move into workstation territory… displaying (not working with) small-medium sized CAD models perhaps.

Get an IdeaPad if aesthetics are important, or a ThinkPad if you need one that can survive a nuclear war/reasonably careful employee.

      • Nah, probably use it for email and CRM software usage.

        Thinkpad is descent I think.

  • do the 4050s have the video enc capabilities of the mid range 4060?

  • is there a 14inch laptop with 4050?

    • +1

There is, but 14' gaming laptops (or even just 'normal' laptops with a dgpu like 4050) fits a small niche and as such, is far more expensive than this. If you are happy to pay the premium, there is the Zephyrus G14, Blade 14, Alienware X14, Stealth 14 and Legion 14. I would personally ignore Alienware X14 and Stealth 14 straight away as these use Intel cpus which just doesnt fair as well as AMD ones inside a thermally compromised 14' chassis.

Legion is probably the cheapest brand doing 14' gaming laptop, and even the legion 14 release in the states starts at some 1500 USD (and thats with a 3050, quite a bit weaker).

  • Seems like the previous Acer deal is better value, why go with the Lenovo when you could save $400 for about same specs?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/795951

      • Lenovo is better built and generally have a better reputation

      • Lenovo have a much better screen

      • LOQs sales are constantly running and when paired wth the elavated cashback from either cashrewards or shopback (see ops post, albeit that already expired yesterday midnight. I also posted on such a deal on two occasions), can be had for about 1.2k so about 100-150$ extra

      • Nitro has 16:10 (even if it has less gamut and res) and bigger battery (60 vs 90whr). I would personally take the nitro, especially if you use the laptop out a lot for non-gaming tasks. 16:10 and the extra battery life is a lot more beneficial than 1440p 100% sRGB imo. Also you save 150 bucks.

        • Pretty sure the panel on the nitro 16 is 100% sRGB with g-sync and 3ms response time. I actually like that it's FHD since 4050 goes nicely when gaming at native resolution.

      • I hear a lot more quality control issues related to Lenovo over Acer. Not to say it's a big issue but it does seem to be an issue none the less.

Often see reviewers saying they returned for another unit. Maybe it's blown out of proportion for me personally. Dunno.

    • agree. I pulled the trigger on the ACER deal yesterday.
I could be wrong but even with cashback, the price difference was around $200.

      • It’s more like 100 with cash back

Historically Acer has been pretty garbage google the hinge issue just with the nitro

They cheap out somewhere stupid and if you are unlucky good luck. I once got a 2mb/s main flash laptop from them and they wouldn’t refund (lol)
        Never again

        • The recent nitros have improved the hinges. There hasn't been any hinge failures outside of super rough use and mistreatment. And it's certainly not worse than the LOQ.

  • Really good

  • Do I get this or the yoga pro 9i for web surfing and binge watching?

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-pro-series/yoga-pro-9i-gen-8-(16-inch-intel)/len101y0035

Is this way to drastic and more for gamers?

    • +1

Depends on your needs. 9i would feel more premium, is lighter, and the 16:10 screen is also a pretty big advantage. Not to mention bigger battery. This will perform a lot better in games though.

    • You sure are buying high-end for browsing and binge watching. If I were you I'd just get the cheapest OLED screen laptop I could.

  • What's people thoughts on going with the i7, upgrading screen for $220 or whatever it is and 1tb for Xtra $49?

    • +1

Would make for an enhanced gaming laptop. Then you could also option the 4060 with the extra 2GB of vram. Note these have a spare slot for another M2 SSD drive so you could increase the storage later yourself.

    • +1

i7 is only worth it if you have heavy CPU loads like rendering, because that 4050 is certainly going to be the limiting factor in games. I would also say that the SSD isnt worth it as there are 2 empty NVMe slots. You can easily add one down the line.

  • +1

Even better deal now with 15%CB?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/796850

    • Very very nice, was waiting for a big cashback discount! Ordered one now. Total: $1,240.

Also the cashback discount doesnt work on Education store items

      • Did cashback track already for you?

        • Not yet, the cashback website says 1-7 days

  • Is the screen going to be THAT bad on the i7 model? Looking at getting this for a University (architecture under grad) use.

    • The I7 has the FHD screen with 45% NTSC, many people dont like this screen, i stayed away from it and went for the I5 QHD screen

      • Thanks, ended up buying the i7 with FHD screen from BingLee as it was available for pick up instantly. Kind of needed the laptop before monday. It's going to be used by an 18yr old, I don't think (or hope) he will mind the screen that much…paid $1392 using an ebay coupon.
        It's a lot of laptop for $1400
Edit: I would give -5 (yes minus 5) for BingLee customer service if I could. Pickup was absolute shambles!!

  • I get to checkout, put in the code and it says "We're sorry, eCoupon IGD23 is not valid or may be expired. eCoupons are case sensitive. Please check your code and try again." :(

    • Yea looks like they removed some products fromt eh IGD23 code, the code only works with the Legion Pro laptops now
