    "R5-7640HS Processor with a 165Hz refresh rate."

A bit disappointing that the processor only runs at 165Hz! ;)

    • Officeworks and their descriptions!

  • Now this is a decent match for this config. Too bad I stucked with my 11th gen i5 and RTX3060 from the deal last year. Still served me well though so no complaints there.

    • +4

seems 3060 performs slightly better than 4050?

      • +1

At 110-140W maybe. Mine runs at 95W only so unsure how "better" it runs against the newer 40 series. But yeah I heard the 4050 in this config usually runs at 40W so frame generation definitely does lots of heavy lifiting for sure.

        • +1

4050 60 and 70 series LAPTOP gpus use TDP and POWER differently to their 3xxx series counterparts, jarrodstech did a youtube testing this, so you cannot compare TDP between the two.

      • They're very similar in a laptop format. Some reports 3060 and some reports 4050 as better.

In this case better off with the newer graphic card as this will always be 1 generation ahead in updates.

        • Watt for watt, the 4050 is much better than the 3060 from experience
This also means less heat and noise

  • +3

16 by 10 and 6GB video RAM is a nice extra.

  • +1

I wonder if this model is running a single 16GB stick of ram? The 15" Nitro 5 I purchased had a single stick with one slot free.

    • -1

      Most likely single stick.

  • +7

wondering what is the panel like. 165Hz panels used to be exclusively good, but Innolux has managed to produce a 165Hz 1920x1200 panel that pumps out just 45% NTSC and is going to be awful.

just want to make sure that's not what Acer used here

    • +1

100% sRGB which I think is equivalent to 72% NTSC

      • thanks a lot

  • +2

Lol @ the tags. Everything imaginable but “laptop” and “gaming laptop”.

    • -1

Why the lol? It is a buget gaming laptop so it is on the heavy side but still perfectly portable and the Zen4 iGPU is defintely a godsend for gaming on battery. And it even came with 16GB of RAM which is not at all common at this price point. What's more do you expect for it to constitute a "laptop" or "gaming laptop"?

      • +5

You’ve completely misinterpreted what I wrote. Read my comment again.

        • +8

          Oh apologies. I'll downvote myself.

Edit: Can't even do it myself. I took upon this shame and my families have scolded me for this oversight.

  • -3

Every Acer nitro I've have got the black screen of death after a year and had to be sent in for warranty

    • -2

Better get the extra 2 year warranty from Officeworks then.

      • If my experience with Lenovo are anything to go by, such major failures are covered for more than just one year due to ACL.

        • +1

ya most people don't know about their consumer rights

        • Couple of things. Most of the ACL is enforceable against the retailer and not manufacturers. The retailer is responsible to deal on your behalf even if there manufacturers defects. If you purchase the goods from a retailer that is not Lenovo then you should take it back to the retailer for ACL claims. All manufacturers will deline claims under warranty which have expired. They will also decline ACL claim if they did not sell you the product.

The second point is most people are unwilling to enforce there ACL rights by taking the retailer to court over the matter.

          • @pandadude: Did buy directly from Lenovo in this case

            • @UosdwisRDewoh: How did they respond?

              • @pandadude: Called them and they happily took it in for repair at no charge. Fixed the issue (broken hinge, very common problem for Flex 5), but after that the battery began draining to 0% while turned off which they couldn't fix so they took it back permanently and refunded. About 16 months after purchase.

      • better just not to buy in the first place

i got free extended warranty with cc if I need it

      • Has anyone here ever purchased the extra warranty from officeworks and had to use it.

  • Any cheap brand new $3-400 laptops for just using Word and watching movies (don't need a good display either)?

    • +1

If you want a cheap reconditioned laptop have a look at www.recompute.com.au

      • -1

Thanks but I prefer a new one. Not urgent so I guess I'll just wait for a good deal to pop up here. There used to be a few every week or so before but seems like most deals are 800-2k now a days.

        • +5

You really should reconsider. A $400 laptop may have new parts but they will be very low end.

Something like this would meet your needs and will have decent build quality, being an ex business laptop

          https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/lenovo-thinkpad…

Notice the decent included keyboard and the steel hinge, rather than plastic hinge and terrible keyboard you will get on a budget pc

          • -1

@greatlamp: $400 for a dual core 6th gen laptop? What?

            • +1

@ldd-mn: What? Not sure what you are referring to

              • +1

@greatlamp: Sorry misread your comment and didn't look at the price on the website properly, my mistake

    • Amazon refurbs, Dell Latitudes are brilliant and under $400 for decent sized and spec'd units, outside of that, you get an under powered POS with a good chance of broken hinges soon after purchase!

    • facebook marketplace, used ones

  • How does this compare to the i5 version.

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-5-15-6-inch-i5-12…

    • +3

Bigger screen higher refresh rate and higher resolution and most likely longer battery life. Ryzen 5 7640HS is faster CPU.

      • +3

So, the only advantage of the i5 is the 2 free games.

  • I am looking for light weight laptop u der $1000 for a high school student.

    • A good deal on Zen 4 APU light weight laptop would be awesome.

Zen 4 APU is enough for casual gaming.

    • This is gigantic and 2.7Kg - it's the opposite of light weight.

Look for a machine under 1.5Kg with a smaller screen if you want it to be ultra portable.

  • +5

According to the specs and the product images, this is actually the Nitro 16. That would make this an even better buy. There’s definitely an error with the Officeworks listing, either the title or the product details.

  • +2

This is it according to the model number (AN16-41-R2KL) in the specs https://www.acer.com/au-en/laptops/nitro/pdp/NH.QLKSA.004

It would be a decent deal if the screen has reasonable colour space … anyone know about the screen?

    • They still cheap out on the Thunderbolt connection it seemed.

      • USB4 I don't think AMD wants to license Thunderbolt

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Bought !
Stock checker shows minimal stock left.
    Good deal

  • +3

Just picked it up. Confirmed Nitro 16

    • +1

      Same. Confirmed Nitro 16

    • Can it charge through USB - C

      • +1

The tech specs on Acer's website it says it can
        https://www.acer.com/au-en/laptops/nitro/pdp/NH.QLKSA.004

        USB Type-C port supporting: USB 3.2 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps), USB charging 5 V; 3 A, DC-in port 20 V; 65 W

        • Interesting, so 65W charging via USB-C. Certainly not enough to keep the laptop charged during use, but enough to slowly charge it when it's off.

          • @Zenskas: It'll have no trouble keeping it charged during light use - it's only high load scenarios like gaming that'll draw more than the charger.

            • @Nom: Maybe, depends on your use I spose. I buy gaming laptop I'm using it primarily to game ;)

          • @Zenskas: It will keep the laptop charged, provided you don't do anything demanding. Perhaps use the integrated graphics etc.

            • @Psivewri: Yeah I get that, what I'm saying is I buy gaming laptop to game - and not with the integrated GPU especially if it's plugged into the wall. There is no way a 65W charger will keep it charged when gaming given the GPU alone uses more than that.
My own Nitro 5 from previous deals doesn't even stay charged when gaming with the included 230W PSU! It slowly drains the battery and is a known issue. After undervolting the CPU+GPU this no longer happens.

My point was to make people aware that whilst yes you can slowly charge via USB-C, it won't keep it charged during use - assuming your usage is primarily what the product is aimed at (which would be gaming with the dGPU when you are plugged in). Even not gaming, modern silicon is extremely bursty in nature and you'll be putting unnecessary intermittent load onto the battery as it has to on/off provide power for what you would consider more light tasks.

So there may be nothing wrong with having or using that option, but the buyer should just keep that in mind if USB-C charging is important to them.

              • @Zenskas: How do you do the undercoating thing?

                • @leiiv: Hey there, this'll start going off topic so take a look at the comment by me at the bottom of this older deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/703213

Should provide all the information you need to undervolt :)

Turns out I misspoke too and my older model came with a 180W PSU. Still far more than 65W, and I believe these new Nitro 16's come with 230W.

  • How do you check if what you get is not the display model?

    • +2

Should come in a brand new sealed box mate

  • +5

Only Marion has stock left in S.A
They Officeworks dude told me he watched the stock levels tank and assumed it was Ozbargainers doing the damage 😁

    Officebargained

    • Right? I checked when I was ordering and there were only few left at two locations, I'm picking up mine from Trinity Gardens tomorrow 🤞

    • +1

I got one from marion just now. There's only one left there now.

  • Are you able to use the 780M instead of the 4050 to conserve battery life?

    • Theoretically, yes. But most gaming laptops dont have a mode that completetly stops the nvidia gpu - its actually a known problem if you do a googling - even if you set everything to run on the igpu, nvidia will have some random background process that will wake the nvidia gpu, thus increasing battery life.

Asus is the only one I know of that includes a mode for igpu only. I dont think acer does, at least not the 2021 model that I have used.

      • its called a mux switch

        • I dont mean a mux switch mate.

Neither Optimus or mux or adv. optimus cant disable dgpu.

    • The DGPU will be in a low power standby state but you will definitely conserve power by switching to the IGPU with Advanced Optimus.

  • +1

cheap af, 16:10 as well. Nice find OP!

  • How do we find out if it has a spare RAM slot or not?

    • Basically ChatGPT is telling us to RTFM:

"I don't have access to real-time information on specific laptop models, and my knowledge is up to date only until September 2021. The availability of a spare RAM slot can vary depending on the specific configuration of the laptop. To find out if the Acer Nitro 16" with AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS has a spare RAM slot, I recommend checking the laptop's user manual or contacting Acer's customer support or checking the official product specifications on Acer's website for the most accurate and up-to-date information."

      • Bard says yes to the spare RAM slot, but I'd still like to verify it in person:

Yes, the Acer Nitro 16" AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS (Zen 4) 16GB RAM 512GB SSD 16:10 FHD Nvidia 4050 6GB has two RAM slots. This means that you can upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 32GB by adding another 16GB RAM stick.

  • +1

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeRG62EpdDI

If this one has everything the one in this review has I imagine I'll be pretty happy.

Spare RAM and SSD slots, has Advanced Optimus, screen is SRGB 100% and 414 nits (possibly with G-Sync according to this).

Won't be quite so peeved that I missed out on the Omen 16 deal if that's the case.

  • +2

Picked up one today. I'm impressed for the $$$. Yes, Nitro 16. Screen is good (SRGB coverage). Good on battery. Good enough on games.
Ryzen 7x4x series. Free DIMM slot

    Ticks a lot of boxes!

    • How did you find out about the DIMM slot? Opened the back panel?

      • +1

cpu-z is reporting a free slot so making some assumptions that this is same as the 7735HS Notebookcheck review being 2 slots. Tomorrow I'll have a look.

    • what's the panel model in hwinfo?

  • Should I pull the trigger on this or wait till Black Friday or something for one with a 4060 on a "slightly" higher price?

    • +2

I'm like you keep putting it off waiting for some better deal but I think this is good for this price. I have had 2 acers before and never had any problems so I'm going to get this.

      • +2

Yeah mate literally just checked out and then saw your comment. Never had a gaming laptop before, just PC and an office laptop so I'm kind of excited! Hope it lasts long. Cheers

  • +2

Is it worth getting the Ryzen 7 version for an extra $400?

    • +1

If you game or use cpu/gpu intensive programs

  • 5 hr battery life and loud as fan!

  • -1
    • What should we do to prepare ???
      Also your link is bad.

      • Link opens for me, if you are on a phone, it's a "word wrap" problem

    • For Ntiro 5, while this is actually Nitro 16. Maybe improved?

  • +1

Bought for my son … thanks OP. Dropping the GPU down to 80W (with no real perf loss) should make pretty cool and quiet. Fingers crossed for the screen. The 4050 with frame gen games will run rings around my 130W 3060 Legion Pro.

Fan profiles too unlike the Legion.

    • If I don't really care about the noise then is there any other advantages decreasing the GPU wattage? Is it 140W GPU in this laptop?
      I'm newbie to gaming laptop

    • How do you drop the GPU? From BIOS or Windows?

  • OOS

    • +1

      Order pick up Tuesday

  • Can this one be used to replace/expand the memory?

    • No. 16GB DDR5-5600 is the sim currently installed
