Worth noting that Voice over Wi-Fi (wifi calling) doesn't work on on this phone for the majority of carriers in Australia.
Sorta kills the deal for me.

    • +1

Apparently it works with telstra at least, it's just not turned on by default.

      • +1

VoLTE works yes but VoWifi functionality broke for telstra based carriers and potentially others some time last year according to range a of whirlpool and Asus support forum posts I found.

    • Both VoLTE and VoWiFi work for me out of the box. I'm with Kogan (Vodafone).

  • +2

To me, it looks like the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra (from this deal) is better specced for the same price. Am I missing something?

    • This is a much smaller phone

    • -1

It has a headphone jack which is worth $3000 by itself

      • Really? I'm not sure why jacks are still so popular these days. After accidentally ripping out a few headphone cables in the past, it's Bluetooth connections all the way for me!

  • How is Asus when it comes to OS updated and security patches?

    • 2 OS updates and Android 13 (released late last year) counts as one of them (so 1 more left). Up to 4 years of security patches.

      • This one only has 2 year security, it's the zenfone 10 that has 4 year security update.

No card slot and no wireless charging is a real bummer :'(

  • I still have my zenfone 3 as my backup and everything is still good except the camera is playing up sometimes. Upgraded to 5 years ago and battery went flat in just 1.5 years. Never upgraded to any other zenfone thereafter especially after price jumped up a lot after 6.

Is 9 a good phone tho? Still dual sim card compatible?

I wish companies would start making small-sized phones like this again.

I have this phone in the 256gb version.

Everything about this phone is excellent. Except for making phone calls. The primary reason for having a phone. After few minutes the person on the end cant hear me it apparently sounds like i'm underwater… I have to hang up and call back. Its a know issue by users and no fix as yet. Not everyone who owns the phone experiences this otherwise it would be fixed.

I'm just working myself up again to get another phone and do the transfer.

Will go back to Samsung. Sorry but i can't recommend this phone based on my experience. Stick with well known phone makers.

I've had the phone since march and there have been, maybe 2 minor updates. Nothing like the updates Samsung drops for its phones.

    • That’s with Bluetooth headphones as well a problem with speaker or the reception?

      • just placing the phone to my ear like a telephone. reception is full strength on 5g with volte on BOOST telstra network. i've tried turning off VOLTE aswell..

WIFI calling continues to drop calls every 10 seconds, so i just turn that feature off .

        • +1

ok I'm skipping it the 256 GB is gone anyway.

Will grab pixel 7 pro when it goes further discount otherwise next year same time grab pixel 8 pro

  • Damn I got it last year with 8xx. Great phone even with good for moderate gaming.

just yesterday news reported that Asus will stop making Zenfone altogether good luck to support, not that it's current support of 2 years is fantastic, actually below standards and a really low bar.

Does zenfone still have the auto call recorder feature

    • Yes.

  • +1

    Great deal, thanks OP!

  • This or Motorola Edge 30 Ultra for ~$600?

Which one is expected to have longer support when it comes to updates and security patches?

    • +1

I figured most people like this phone because of the smaller formfactor.

I personally wouldn't consider either, because I don't want a smaller phone or poor support. If I spending this much on a phone I'd like to have a minimum of 4 years support. Each to their own but I see no value changing phones more frequently nowadays.

      • Also more E-Waste

      • Battery is going to be degraded after 4 years. People always forget that part when talking X amount of updates.

        • My 4 year plus note 9 was still getting 4 hours screen time. Only moved onto new model because of software stopped getting support. Key reasons battery life was still good after 4 years, limit use of fast charging, i turn this feature off. And turning on battery protect, which limits charging 85%. In future with the EU pushing for user replaceble batteries, the oem strategies that depend on you buying new hardware every second year is going to work against them. Of course Samsung, Google, Apple are pushing you hard into their ecosystems and selling you services.

My 9 year old ipad still gives several hours on its battery too and still gets updates. The idea a couple year old device no longer gets updates, especially $500+ ones serms wasteful.

  • Also throwing between this and the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. Looks like the Zenfone has better cameras.

    • I ruled out the Edge 30 ultra as soon as I found out it isn't waterproof… Still tossing up whether I should jump on this or wait for pixel 8

  • anyone having trouble applying perks code? Also how long does JB do sale deals for phones like these for? would I have more time to sort out my issue with not being able to apply perks code lol

    • Yep. I made the purchase but forgot to apply my voucher. When I went to purchase again, I can't seem to apply voucher or even make a purchase as the click and collect or delivery doesn't seem to load.

  • Man if this had UWB I'd be so in…

Rather get the Pixel 7 or Samsung S23 256GB for the price.

    • please do make a post about where to find a 256gb s23 for $679 currently

      • People got them earlier this year, I got two S23 256gb for around average $700 each. One was $680ish and other was $720ish from negotiating with JB Hifi. Or be patient and wait for the next offer to come up.

        • +1

I need to see the receipt.

            @BargainDemon: Here you go bro

            https://ibb.co/9bMmsjY

The other one I bought at a higher price in the low $700s when the price matched source was slightly higher.

Had to work for this deal, went to at least 3 different JB's before succeeding.

        • Could you share the link for reference? I was going to wait for black friday sales. cheers

  • hmm this is very tempting, I bought an A73 12 months ago for around the same price but find that it's a bit glitchy/slow at times and there are a few behaviours built-in to the Samsung OS that are frustrating to deal with (the blue light filter turns off for fingerprint prompts). Tempted to trade in for this.

edit: the zenfone will only get 2 years of support, as it was released a year ago it only has one year of updates left.

  • anyone else having trouble ordering?

  • No SD card :'(
I have 128gb phone + 256gb of media to transfer to my next upgrade. This ticks so many boxes but not storage/SD :'(

  • +1

I'd have this phone for about 8 months now, great phone.

    • Camera cut outs got annoying for me as it's unbalanced on the table
    • Fingerprint, I like to unlock when phone is on the table, but the face unlock works amazingly to replace it, just means extra head movements
    • Battery life is pretty amazing
    • Camera is…not great, you probably want to the good situations/environment for it. Sometimes slow vs what I've seen in the P7. Video gimbal is nice, but found I rarely used it
    • You MUST use the built in galley app with your camera app. If you disable it, can't previous photos from your camera app. As a heavy Google Photos user…this was very annoying
    • I thought the camera was the best part of the phone. That's disappointing.

      • I think it's slow compared to others I've used. But @fattymattyd reminds me of a good solution if you're open to some minor dev work

    • +1

Re your last point, sideload the google camera apk - that's what I've done.

      • This is a good idea actually, I haven't been bothered with messing with these kinds of things lately, in the past definitely when customisation options were lacking

      • Any particular one you're using? I know people have different config files.

        • +1

I had been running an old apk with a config file since I got the phone in Feb - didn't think much of it to update.

Then writing my comment this morning reminded me that perhaps I should update to a later version, so I've just installed MGC_8.9.097_A11_V6 this morning.

Doesn't seem to need a config file & seems to be running a bit better than the version I had before.

  • Are ASUS phones still suffering from ramdump bricking?
I loved my Zenfone8 right up until it turned off one day, never to turn on again.
It was just over 1 year old.

    • I just had this happen to me with my ZenFone 8. Suddenly died at 13 months. It's with JB at the moment hopefully will have a resolution. Purchased this ZenFone 9 incase I don't get it back.

      • I'll cross my fingers for you.
Mine is an import so not covered by warranty.

  • +3

It seems like I've snagged the 256GB version for $599 now.

    • +3

Yep same price for 128 or 256gb for me

    • Same here, so $579 with $20 perk code for 256GB model. Sweet! I have the Zenfone 8 currently. Wasn't planning on upgrading yet but @ less than $50/month over the next year I'm happy with this.

  • No wireless charging is a deal breaker sadly… :(

    • Slow ans ruins your battery and wont charge in summer due to already hots while wireless charging? I just get a 100w cable and adaptor for car boom

  • I was flipping between this phone and the S23 when it came out. Ended up with a S23 on discount but for $600 I would have gotten the ZenFone 9 for sure, S23s are still selling for around $1000.

  • I used to like this phone, had the ZenFone 2 for a few months until the screen stopped accepting touch input. ASUS refused to provide a warranty repair, claiming that I intentionally damaged the phone. If it wasn't for Australian refund rules I wouldn't have gotten my money back.

Never buying another zenfone or Asus product again.

  • Not many software updates available so not gonna last..

  • I want to buy it but wifi calling doesn’t work in Australia and there is only 1 more year for security updates.

    • It does work tf you smoking cuh

      • Doesn't work for Telstra/Boost

  • Both 128gb & 256gb models are the same price now - not sure if that's a mistake are not

    • I'm sure it's a mistake. The catalog says the 256GB version is $699 and when I looked at the website this morning it was showing $699 and $400 off, but whilst I was actually looking at it and flipping between the colours of the 128GB model the 256GB model changed to showing $599 and $100 off (instead of $500 off). Either way, I bought one online and it apparently arrives tomorrow. Lets see what I receive…..

  • If I didn't buy the iphone 12 mini from the amaysim deal I would have jumped on this. Love smaller phones!

    • How is the iPhone 12 mini treating you? I'm always curious about iPhone minis

    • +1

Haha, I missed out on that one from pure indecision so rounded out and bought this now. Bit nervous about moving to android but let's see i guess

  • Looks like this phone performs better than pixel 7 pro

  • Has anyone not received their 256GB model? Bit nervous they will reneg on this. Mine was due to arrive on Monday

    • There was still some stock around just before they removed it. Mostly at regional stores. I wouldn't lose hope yet.

      • +1

Funnily enough I got a despatch email just this arvo. Cheers mate
