And the charcoal colored model is $10 cheaper again: https://www.target.com.au/p/google-nest-mini/64542546 … Just $30.

    • Evidently I'm not a good ozbargainer - didn't think to check grey. Updated the post and ordered 3 grey ones! :D

If you are happy with secondhand, you can generally pick these up off Facebook marketplace for like $10-20 and they work as good as new. There always seem to be people deciding that smart speakers aren't for them

    • +3

It's more that they're often bundled in with other deals and plenty of people never wanted them or use Alexa etc instead. Or just hope to claw back a bit of their purchase price.

    • Facebook marketplace full of scams

    Grey ($30), White ($40)

So Target discriminate based on colour?
    😲

    • +1

      Suppy and demand.

      • Idk about you, but I like my speakers with colour.

    • +1

      Yes.

  • Hows the sound quality on these?
And can you chain them together with the larger screen version to play music?

    • Hows the sound quality on these?

      good…

And can you chain them together with the larger screen version to play music?

yes, they can be synced together.

      • I paired these to my laptop as a speaker pair and the lag to where the video was at (using YouTube) was unwatchable.

        • You need good wifi…

          • @jv: Rightio. Not sure how that helps with a bluetooth setup. But. My wifi is way over-engineered - it most definitely wasnt that.

            • @camr00:

Not sure how that helps with a bluetooth setup.

Mine are synced over the home wifi network. Have them in multiple rooms. Works great.

        • +1

They aren't designed for that. Maybe for casting audio you mean?

Don't think it's easy to connect as a Bluetooth speaker anyway. I got a Bose SoundLink mini connected to the PC via 3.5mm aux, works well and only on when I need it (and separate to headphone DAC/ amp setup.

        • Just tested pairing nest audio to phone in Bluetooth mode, no lag. I'm not sure if you can do it without an internet connection, should be able to. Can test the mini on PC using Bluetooth. There are sync/delay settings in the home app but have never had an issue.

It's fine. I've got a bunch of the original "Home" Mini, and then 2x Nest Mini set as a stereo pair. Nothing mindblowing audio wise but they do what they say on the tin. The stereo pair can sometimes freak out and forget that I've paired them together which means re-setting them up.

At this price they're probably worth it.

    • +2

They keep surprising me how good they sound. Not replacing my hifi, but quite loud and not annoying for their size.

    • +1

They're fine for general Google Assistant use but I wouldn't rely on it as a music player in anything other than a small room. The full-sized Nest speakers sound a lot better.

      • I paired two of these and put them on separate ends of a larger room, sounds decent enough.

      • You can also just pair them with some decent dumb speakers over bluetooth, and then you can cast to it/add to speaker group. I have this for one of my google homes. Works pretty well.

    • +1

It's mainly for convenience and voice commands, don't know what people expect for the size of it.

Nest audio is bigger and louder for music. just consider it a handy device, and it's ok to have a few around the house if you use google home.

Got a free one YouTube music subscription years ago.

      • actually decent as a stereo pair and it's got the right EQ for dorms/shared accommodation so you can hear music without being obnoxious.

        • Yeah they are fine for a small speaker for normal quiet use and better than nothing.

    • +1

They're okay for playing music quietly, but you'll notice the lack of bass if you need any serious volume.

    • Music quality is pretty good, but echo dots are better. And seriously, FK google home systems. It went from OK to retarded and this new revamp has gone downhill quickly. I'm now on the great big p*nis ship Amazon, and alexa scripts work well enough for me without going Down the Rabbithole with Home Assistant (shut up, I know it's superior, but FFS I don't want to retake a CS201 course to setup stuff)

  • Cheers OP, bought 2 white👍

  • Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP, got two Charcoal.

  • I wonder if this compares.

for a limited time, new Prime members can get an Echo Pop with Alexa for $20 (RRP $79)

I think you can start a new account with a free trial to access the offer.

Performance of Google Assistant on these has degraded horribly over time.

    • +1

Tell me about it. When I got my first speaker we used it for everything now its lucky to just connect and be a speaker

    • +4

Hmm, that's not the case for us. We've had ours for years and they still work exactly the same as they did on day one.

      • +1

        Hey google, all lights off.
Playing tracks is a part of you tube music premium, but here's some music from Adelle.
        … SOMEONE LIKE YOUUUUUUU
        GOOGLE STOP!
inset banging on wall / baby crying
        FK GD DAMNIT GOOGLE
I'm sorry, I didn't recognize that, would you like to forward that on your Phone.

        • "Hey Google, turn all of the lights off" works for us.

          • @j1nx: Just have to know the way to ask/commands, not mumble, maybe train your voice again.

Frustrating af sometimes for sure.. but ok most of the time. These little ones seem better than the hub gen 2 for that stuff.

    • +3

Agreed. It gets basic commands wrong much more often, has removed essential features like third party todo lists, and is a pain to get working with Plex (unlike Alexa). It's ok for controlling lights and setting kitchen timers though.

    • +1

I have to agree. I loved them at the start about 2 years ago, but the amount of bone head things it does now drives me nuts.

When I ask it to "play some music" it literally starts playing the song "music" by Madonna every time or gets stuck in a a loop playing the same 5 songs over and over again. When I ask it to add an item to my shopping list, it creates two lists - one called "shopping list" and one called "my shopping list." When I ask it to decrease its volume, it refuses to do so and keeps trying to turn the volume of my tv down instead, even though the TV is off. I could go on.

Overall, still happy that I have them, but I'm almost certain Google has taken the focus off these devices and has put the AI team on other tasks once ChatGPT came out (and fair enough!).

  • Thanks OP.

Does anyone tried price matching with Jb Hi-Fi ?

    • -1

      Some does try.

Handy units. INTERESTING STORY. I got one of these when they first came out for FREE from Google! They emailed me outta the blue at Xmas time a few years ago to ask if I wanted one. How and why me? IDK exactly except they references my YouTube Premium ( called "YouTube Red" at time I think). Literally the only time I've "spoken" to google, in fact they are rebound for having no human support for YouTube related accounts. Whole thing was strange, no followup just delivered the package

    • yep, same - got two for free, one sent to my partner and myself for our youtube premium family plan a long while ago. they came out of the blue also without us requesting them.

  • +1

Cheers, got 3. We had been meaning to buy some more so that we can have nature sounds/music play synced up through out the house. This made it a lot cheaper to accomplish :P

    • Same here but ended up having more echo dots due to the price lol

  • Amazon had their echo dot for under $15 during prime day. C'mon Google …

  • I think this is the model with no headphone jack

    • Huh ?

      • Fixed
        Huh ?

        • +1

          Huh ?

  • Cheaper $30 one is OOS

    • Out Of Sight ?

  • No stock anywhere. Great.
    Clearance means new ver coming?

    • Just checked. Looks like there’s still stock of the chalk/$40 unit - online and in a load of stores.

  • Cheers OP picked up two, got a nest hub 2nd gen the other day so these should go nicely with it

  • +2

    Great units… horrible power adapters.

    • +1

      Agree, absolutely pathetic shape.

  • @WhingingPom - Your post needs editing. You’ve written Black and Charcoal with incorrect links.
