  • I picked up one in Altona North,

What's Altona Gate like these days? Haven't been their in years. Is Kmart still the only place keeping it alive?

    • +4

They did a full refurb around a year ago, so it's still looking very fresh. The food court on the lower level has gone and was replaced with more shops. I don't think there are many/any empty shop units.

      • Donut King is gone? Noooooooo

        • I remember there was a donut king at highpoint. near the escalators at the old food court. They were having all types of specials.

+1 for how to change the battery Nice 👍🏽

    • +8

You actually aren't going to be able to change these batteries like any other batteries.

They are spot welded, you need a dedicated device to do so with 18650 and 21700 cells.

You cannot solder wires onto these batteries, it's absurdly dangerous, you cannot tape the wires down either, it's dangerous.

For anyone, if you want to be able to swap out batteries, there are good acrylic based clear 21700 enclosures (look it up on aliexpress) for very cheap and affordable prices.

      • +1

        @cyberlander what say you?

unclip the bottom panel, remove 4 screws and the metal outer cover slides off). It contains 4 x NCA 21700 5000mAh batteries

        vs

        spot welded

Any chance you could confirm whether or not the batteries are removeable?

I can't see why they would provide access if they aren't replaceable.

        • +1

I took a look and have added some addition internal pics to the post description above. The batteries have spot welded tabs to which the leads have been soldered. Hope that helps.

        • +1

The contacts are spott welded in series. you can remove them but it's not like clipping batters into a remote where the contacts are fixed to acheive the correct voltage

  • The output of USB-C1/C2 under 20V 3.25A may shut down after 15 minutes if the internal protection circuit is working

I wonder if that's a an actual timer or just thermal limits.

    • Assumed thermal limit. I charged my 65w laptop for around 45 minutes last night, and although the power bank did feel warm to the touch (not hot), there was no interruption to charging during that time. Hope that helps.

  • +3

Was 49 last month so could prob wait until it lower

    • +1

It is on clearance, which I am assuming they are getting rid of stock?

      • +4

its been on clearance for a while even when it was $49

    • +3

It's a reverse auction. Will it be ozbargained while you hold out? How patient is the average ozbargainer waiting for a better price?

  • Can I charge a macbook with this or should I splurge more?

    • It will charge, though for a MacBook Pro not at full speed.

    • +1

      If you can afford it*

A ZMI NO20 QM586B IS the best bank money can buy and is long term rested.
It's pricey at 170aud on Amazon… But I promise it's well worth it.

  • +3

bought and returned as it did not charge my msi laptop 65w capacity

  • Bought one but then realised it doesn't say Power Delivery anywhere - was going to use this to charge my steam deck @ 45w. Am I out of luck?

    • 65w mate.

      • Does mean its via PD, like in order to deliver that much wattage, it's only possible via PD?

        • It does 15v3A which falls under pd spec

You will be just fine with usb c1 output

  • +9

Opened the thread it was ‘Anker’ damn.

  • Can anyone share how heavy this is?

  • Possibility brought on airplane everyone?

    • Why not

      • The limit is 99Whrs

    • +1

      lol

    • lol that looks so suss…

is it really held together with a bit of tape or whatever??

And are those batteries replaceable or are those wires soldered on?

  • +3

    Great tear down

  • +2

Keen on this one. Anyone knows if this can be charged by ac power and at the same time use to charge phone devices? i.e. Being charged and discharged at the same time?

    • +8

I just tested this for you and yes, when charging the power bank via one of the USB-C ports, it continues to charge devices via the remaining USB-C or USB-A ports. This seems to have some level of intelligence behind it as when charging, and a device is connected, the charging circuit resets, charging resumes, and additional power appears to be pulled from the charger (if available).

      • +3

Thanks bro. That is awesome and can "function" as a UPS of some sort. Appreciated your help!

        • +3

Pretty sure if the mains power goes out, the charging circuit will reset before delivering power again, so if whatever you have plugged in doesn't have its own battery, it will shut down.

          • @DeToxin: Thanks for the headsup - I am having 2nd thoughts now.

            • +3

@jeeg: Confirmed - when mains power is disconnected, the charging circuit resets for around 1 second, then resumes. Same occurs when mains power is reconnected. Hope that helps!

      • Do you know how long it takes to charge from 0-100 and/or what wattage it charges at?

  • What Power Bank should i be looking at for charging a Mac air …

      charging a Mac air

      Wind turbine.

Sorry, but at all helpful, but couldn’t resist.

        Not at all *

    • I've found 27W powerbanks can comfortably charge 13" M1 Macbook Airs and pros. So this should be fine.

  • Waiting for comment about 69WAnko…

    Cactus ere

I haven't torn this down yet, but soon I will.

Im also willing to bet kidneys that these are maybe 2000-3000 mAh cells.

I don't think people are generally aware, but 5000mAh 21700 cells are not cheap. Look up the price of any new 5000mAh cell and you can see how different the costs are.

You just can't skirt around the cost and cut corners when it comes to true battery density.

The market is flooded from refurbished batteries however that don't undergo individual testing per cell. Common ways these ratings are circumvented are:

-These are likely cells that were once 5000mAh and cannot hold that amount anymore. These are the same cells used in EVs and high density batteries so theres a huge market for old used cells being sold as new… Who's testing after all?

-They're restickered with outright false capacity in some cases.

-They're manufacturing QC fails that didn't meet spec (much rarer)

I can't comment on anything else, as I haven't put these through testing yet, but I'm fairly certain that I know the exact PCB being reused in this, and it's on the lower spectrum of efficient at 80% ish.

You should expect the true capacity of these subsequently to be around 7000 to 9000 mAh after everything.. Which might make you think to look elsewhere for a bank however…

It's still a decent deal if it's able to push 65w sustained without heat issues and start/stopping, which is worth looking at and maybe users who already have it this can chime in because 21700 cells are rated for high current unlike the flat lipo cells you see in slim banks that are problematic.

I mention this because it's worth knowing what you're buying, and you're not buying what's being advertised for because the industry is set up to be able to obfuscate and fool you.

Battery banks below $100 likely aren't anywhere near 20-25k mAh because the batteries physically won't be high enough capacity.

Preliminary 3 cacti and 2 succulents out of 5.

    • This would be a bargain if the cells were true to spec. Essentially the same as the xiaomi zmi cells which cost around $200.
The recharge time seems a bit suspicious at 6 hours.

      • Yeah, the very few banks I know that have close to true capacity like the Xiaomi ZMI No20 and the Anker 537/737 are all above $100 and closer to the $200? Mark.

For anyone considering any power bank, just remember that any of the good ones above $100 like the ZMI No20 should last you YEARS minimum with heavy use, I have access to multiple through testing, friends, colleagues and acquaintances that have used one to varying degrees and varying amounts of time all of which are still going strong since release.

      • fwiw also the ZMI use Genuine SAMSUNG INR21700 50E cells

The cheapest of which are $13 a cell generally and only fractionally cheaper even under wholesale for anyone curious.

These are also some of the cheaper 5000mAh cells (by no means bad quality whatsoever, just don't go as high in their discharge current as battery banks don't need to go as high as some of the use cases for these)

    • Best brands to look at when buying a 10,000mah+ power bank?
Any other recommendations on what specs to look for which would indicate better quality?

      • +4

ZMI No20 comes out on top across 200 banks for me. It's unparalleled in nearly every aspect. It holds the record overall as the best money can buy based off performance, cost, form factor/density and quality. Coming up on 2 years I can also say longevity.

It's the highest sustained combined output possible in a battery bank at 200w over 2/3 ports, charges the whole thing at 100w to be able to charge fully in under 2 hours. Proper good quality NEW cells. They're about $170 on Amazon (sometimes on sale for 130) and around 130 on aliexpress if you're willing to wait 1.5wks for delivery.

I don't have any suggestions for 10k mAh and lower at the moment, I'll probably have something soon but you are paying a base amount for any bank, and while 10k banks are usually closer to that 10k, they have to subsidize the cost by using both circuitry and unsuitable batteries like lipo to be more cost effective. People want their 10k bank to be half as much as a 20 K bank, but it's not like that when you look at spec to spec, and to deliver that they need to cut even more corners.

    • I thought most powerbanks use the pouch-packs these days instead of cylindrical cells?

Still as the old adage goes, you get what you pay for.

    • Looking forward to hearing your tear down

  • Can this charger be suitable to charge laptop when outdoors

    • +6

Indoors only with this one. Sorry.

  • It doesn't state input, can you let us know how long it takes to charge fully from zero?

    • +2

      The manual says 6 hours

    • it states max input 12v@3a (36w)
I've just tested and it charges from 30% to full in about 1:40 on a zyron deskpod charger

  • I've owned this charger for ~3 months
Good for the price, but geez the shape of the charger is dismal lol. better options if you can afford

  • +3

Bought this at the same price the last time it was on here. Had it about 2 months, more reliable than the Baseus one that was nearly twice the price so far.

  • Ordered last night around 7:40pm and got an order cancellation email at 8:18pm saying they are unable to source stock

  • What is the output when using multiple ports? When I went to my local Kmart and looked at it, it said any combination of 2 or more ports at the same time was max 3A total. Is this true?

    • It's at the Kmart link under product details

  • OOS online and most metro

  • My online order just got cancelled. Apparently couldn't source stock.

This Anko power bank makes my Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G play a different sound, show aqua instead of green, and display SUPER FAST CHARGING.

    That is a new development.

    • What chargers have you been using in the past? 5v?

      • Some PD charger that came with my GPD WIN 2 because the Samsung charger that came with the phone was DOA.

        • What is the rating of this charger (volts, amps, watts)?

          • +1

            @Muzeeb: .
The Anko's USB-C ports can do:

            • 15W: 5V x 3A
            • 27W: 9V x 3A - The Samsung's Super Fast Charging is 25W so this must be what enables it.
            • 36W: 12V x 3A
            • 45W: 15V x 3A
            • 65W: 20V x 3.25A

The GPD WIN 2's charger is a single USB-C port that does:

            • 15W: 5V x 3A
            • 24W: 9V x 2.67A
            • 24W: 12V x 2A

The Note20 Ultra 5G charged from 0% to 100% in 1h5m which I am very impressed with.
