  • are these proprietary (dell & lenovo) or can they be modified? E.g. adding another LAN port, more ram etc.

    • Yes everything is proprietary that can be, but yes you can add more RAM or PCIe low profile network cards.

The CPU socket, RAM slots, and PCIe slots are not proprietary for obvious reasons.

Not been my experience. What was your scenario?

      • -4

Bought one from the seller. It was advertised as having wifi. Arrived with missing onboard wifi and was instead given usb wifi. Seller responded with something to the effect of: we didn't say it was going to be onboard wifi; just that it would have wifi. Not technically false advertising, but dishonest or at the least misleading.
The norm when advertising these units is that if it says "wifi", then it would contain onboard wifi.
Consider if a seller advertises a similar unit with "256GB SSD", but what you receive is a USB micro reader with a 256GB microsd. That's technically an SSD, but you would normally expect an NVME, M.2 or SATA SSD.

        To me, that's dishonest.

I know this is cheap as f but this old computer would probably die in 1-2 years and will be very slow.

    • Why will it die? What component do you expect to fail?

      • +2

It'll die because he doesn't know how to look after a PC.

        • Smartazz speaks the truth; as long as you give it an oil change every 10,000 hours.

If not, it will still work, like grandpa's axe.

      • What component do you expect to fail?

The moving parts (ie fans) and the power supply are the consumables - but the wear on both depends entirely on how much it's had in it's previous corporate life.

The rest will last for decades.

@CrispyChrispy: Haha I would assume that would be immediately binned anyway for an SSD 😁😁

  • Does this have wifi

  • +1

Got the optiplex. Seems to have a wifi adapter based on the description

    • Edit: the seller has replied to me saying there is no built in wifi adapter like the 'about this item' description says :-( no wifi functionality at all

      • +1

And they told me to buy a wifi dongle to resolve the issue. Not sure whether i should just cancel considering the about this item description says built in wifi adapter and now they are saying it doesn't and i need to purchase a dongle. I really wanted this thing to work out if the box. Now I'm worried it'll just be problem after problem and the seller won't be willing to help.

Now I'm worried it'll just be problem after problem and the seller won't be willing to help.

These are used machines - you're basically going to be on your own with any issues anyway. Be prepared to have to make the occasional repair/upgrade with any used computer…

        • Relax, just buy a wifi dongle and plug it in.

Most of these ex-office desktops don't have wifi, if you are technically able, buy in pci wifi adaptor. If not, get a usb one. usb wifi can get interference if you are transferring files across usb3 in near by ports.

thoughts on "Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p SFF Intel i7 3770", same price, older gen but with faster cpu and 180GB SSD?

    • Nah cpu is worse and ssds are very cheap now so this would be better

  • +2

Dell OptiPlex 7040 SFF Intel i5 6500 3.20GHz 8GB RAM 500GB HDD Win 10 available for the same price. Appears to have more ports and better value.

  • I'm assuming both of these only support 1x 3.5" drive?

  • Anyone know what the idle power of one of these (and/or the dell) is? (for a always-on low-power server).

    • +1

Around 6W, with spikes to 13W. Give or take 2W.

      • +1

My M900 mini bounces from 12w to 20w but I have a SATA SSD and M.2 with 2 sticks of 16gb ram

  • Whats the model of this one?
    5536AN6?

  • Unlucky no nvme slot

    • +1

It's got a pair of PCIe slots that you can use for NVMe drives 👍

EDIT : I think it actually has 3 PCIe slots, so even better.

    • I'm almost certain it has a side-mounted NVME slot like a lot of the old HP z240's had. Please refer to this image: https://forumscdn.lenovo.com/old_attach/147250i49BCB29796388…

      • Nice find - so judging by the solder pads where the 4th PCIe slot should be, it should be possible to find these with 4 PCIe slots and an NVMe ! Pretty cool for a SFF 😎

  • Apparently, the 6500 can't really do 10-bit HEVC decode.

    • For media playback (Kodi), I look for the i7 variant with older machines like this, so there's enough power to just decode everything in software - this way it doesn't matter what hardware decoding is and is not supported

      • +1

I don't know what I'm talking about but I'm assuming if you use direct play then the server won't actually need to do any encoding/decoding. The device you're streaming to will handle the decoding? Do you know if that's correct?

        • Yes… I think you're talking about NOT using transcoding.

If you just want a device to host movies, then absolutely anything will do.
You only need to care about specifications on the playback machines OR the transcoding server if you have that.

  • codes expired? getting "This code can't be applied to your order."

  • Anything smaller than this that's still capable of running a Plex server?

    • Any micro form factor machine will happily run Plex server - do you need transcoding ?

If not, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185505619611 will do fine. Note that you'll need USB hard drives because you're not fitting 3.5" drives into a micro chassis.

      • I'd like to say no but honestly I've never had much luck with it and always find it transcoding more often than not!

It's a good point about the drives, I think I probably need to focus on sorting out centralising my network so that I'm not limited to small factors

  • For a 9yo starting to play Fortnight, will it be ok?

    • No, this form factor can only take a very limited selection of expensive low profile graphics cards.

Buy the same machine with a tower chassis, then you can add a video card of your choice for Fortnight.

      • I don’t know if that is true?
Plenty of low profile cards around me on marketplace around the $50 mark that seem to be capable of Fortnite eg gt1030 or k1200 quadro based on benchmark websites

See discussion above with helpful people. My son has bought himself this unit and I’m on the hunt for the card for him now.

        • Try buying a quadro K620. I have used one for gaming in the past and its a pretty solid card for around 30 bucks on ebay. Not sure about performance on fortnite but it handles CSGO pretty well.

          • @CHUNITHM Luminous: Thanks for that - specs also say it's a 160mm board, maybe the <150mm size on the Lenovo site is just being conservative and I should just wait til it arrives and get a tape measure out

            • @Hoju: K620 should fit as long as you buy one with the low profile bracket. Also should perform similar to a 1030 lol.

        • Cards like the 1030 are just barely capable of any gaming at all - you'll only be running Fortnight at lower resolutions and lower video settings, and more importantly you're screwed when your kid then wants to play the next game that isn't Fortnight !!

Low profile cards are limited in choice and expensive - you're much better off with a larger chassis that can take normal video cards - that way you have the choice of the whole market, you can buy any card at the price point you need.

          • +1

@Nom: It's all relative I guess. He doesn't play Fortnite. Plays CS, Team fortress 2 and Minecraft plus a bit of Roblox
I'm sure a 1030 would be more than enough for that.

Agree that the choice of cards is limited though

      • Mate this could be on the money

        https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkCentre-A-E-M-S-Series/M910…

This guy is admittedly in the US but same M910S SFF pc
Couldn’t fit a thing in there other than something pretty ordinary

Going to ask the seller about an upgrade possibly to that other one / $235, already has the ssd, better cpu and 16 ram, things that would probably all get upgraded to from the OP model and cost money in the end

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204454270605 @ $240 would be my choice for a Fortnight machine. You'll need to add a graphics card.

These cards are $250 - this is terrible value, don't do this.

  • Is it ridiculous to get one of these pci slot extensions for $10 and just plug in a standard graphics card mounted outside the case?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162685122296?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • I have done this in the past. It's ugly as hell but it did work for me.

    • It'll work if the Power Supply is up to the job.

But these corporate machines come in Micro Form Factor, Small Form Factor (this deal), and Mini Tower - if you want to put a video card in, stick to the Tower machines like this one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14271312/redir - they come with bigger power supplies and normal sized card slots. That particular one is nicely specced with 16GB/512GB and an i7.

  • Lucky its OOS now … I wanted one for my son to play minecraft on but ended up with a I3 9100T (MFF) for $200.

Although they all use the LGA1151 socket … my understanding with the Micro Form Factors is … this socket can only do 6th & 7th Gens .. where a different variant of the LGA1151 does the 8th and 9th gen. I could be wrong buts its not as easy as upgrading this 6th gen to a 9th gen.

Nevertheless its (was) a damn good bargain

  • this vs ol reliable - i7 3770?
