less than $40 through turkey with the code

    • +2

I don’t believe that method works anymore.

Edit: it seems some people have got it to work during August but the deal is marked as expired.

Can anyone provide advice on the best current working process for people who have never used turkey payments before?

      • +2

@WeiKaiLe i think it should work with a turkish card like oldubil or other vcc's.i already have the pass so i cant confirm if its still working.

        • Apparently it's gotten very difficult / inconsistent to utilize a vcc in turkey.

      • Sadly the IBANs previously recommended are currently rejected by Revolut, so I'm also unfortunately stuck… Also equally open to suggestions

    • Nice I paid around $50 after flapping around with the apps etc

I bought this perhaps 2 years ago. Mainly to support Plex as I like their product. But I'm not sure what the lifetime Plex Pass does

    • +5

Gives you access to Plex Pass features for a lifetime.

I’m sure Google will tell you what those features are.

    • me too.

someone told me i could set up a server with a NAS, but never worked out anything more about it tbh

      Hardware transcoding

    • +1

One thing is that this unlocks hardware transcoding, which, as far as I can tell, is required for tone mapping, which, as far as I can tell, is required to watch movies with HDR encoding.

      • +1

Free version of Plex can play HDR video without any problems or limitations if the content is being watched on a HDR capable device. The “tone mapping” is used for converting HDR to SDR when playing on SDR screens, so the colours don’t look off/washed out. So as long as you have a HDR capable TV/monitor/tablet/whatever, free version of Plex will play correctly HDR10 / HDR10+ / Dolby Vision.

If company fail does it still last my lifetime?

always, plex willl be around forever even when people stop buying this useless product.

  • Not in my experience.

PS have plex lifetime. Hope I haven't hexed it

Jellyfin is 100% off RRP of nothing.

https://torrentfreak.com/plex-will-block-media-servers-at-pr… If you read that, they have more control over your sever then they should.

    • Jellyfin on Shield is just a client, you can't use Shield as a server.

    • +3

Here comes the Jellyfin fans :)

    • +3

I'll be setting up a secondary server with Jellyfin, directed at the same content folders.

But for now, it's not on enough devices, and the ones it is on aren't great quality. But having a Plex Lifetime Pass for 3 years now, I am starting to get more frustrated with how much of my library is on their terrible servers.

They spend too much of their man hours on anything but improving the core functions.

      • +1

also bought lifetime pass a few years ago and cannot believe the leaps and bounds they'll go to to avoid fixing bugs. Linus Tech Tips even stopped taking their sponsorships with a message along the lines of "just fix the broken downloads thing and we'll be nice again" and they still wont do it

    • +1

If you actually read the article, you'd understand that they're would be blocking IPs of the hosting company, not of self hosted plex servers, i.e. running it off your own NAS.

    • Could you point me in the direction of instructions on how to just stream files from a desktop computer? I can't find anything in plain English on the Jellyfish website…

    • Jellyfin is great if you're just using desktop or the web clients, but the mobile and TV apps just aren't there yet for me to fully switch.

Every 6ish months I'll reinstall jellyfin and see how progress is going, and there's always massive improvements. The mobile apps are getting there, and maybe sometime next year I'll be able to switch fully, but can't quite yet.

      • Agreed. I also have a lifetime Emby sub and whilst I do prefer open source I am happy with Emby at the moment.

But Jellyfin isn't quite there yet.

  • +2

Drop Plex, switch to Jellyfin. $0 for a lifetime "plan". Or donate to them and help them develop it even more.

    • +1

I tried Jellyfin, but found Plex to have a nicer UI and more features I wanted, particularly on the apps. But that was 18 months ago, so maybe that's not the case anymore?

      • It's still sub-par, my plan is to have a Jellyfin container as a backup, directed to the same content folders. It's shouldn't take up too much of my Ryzen CPU w/ 32GB RAM.

      • Still sucks. Especially the clients.

      • I (and the family) have not had an issue with the UI or anything since setting it up. There is only the one client I'm aware of (on Android), but again, it works fine. All I need it to do is show me my videos, let me watch them, and download them now and then.

    • If you’ve already paid for a lifetime plan, experiment with whatever you like. Plex clients are everywhere and while they aren’t they greatest, they were the only solution that solved my Dolby Vision playback issue a few years ago. When KODI gets around to a solution for dv.hdr in a .mkv file I’ll check out other solutions.

Plex works, it has some shortcomings on the player but it’s solid enough, with NBN shitty upload speeds you’ll want that transcode solution.

That being said I’ll look at Jellyfin but Plex works, I don’t need to stream outside of my own LAN, but I paid full AUD Black Friday discount pricing about three or maybe four years ago which probably was a bit cheaper but not by a lot and haven’t regretted it and I’m connected to several other Plex servers on colleague’s servers in the UK and USA. Some of those are hosted, but most are dumping their hosting as the two main ones I use have 1Gbps or 2Gbps Symmetrical Fibre to their home.

Also the cost of a decent card like an Nvidia A2000 which has enough grunt for real-time transcoding, the cost of a Lifetime Plex Pass is tiny in the scheme of things. Hoping 18-22TB HDD prices will drop.

      • I bought my Nvidia P2000 card for $180 a couple of months back when I bought my lifetime Plex pass (which they weirdly never billed me for…) and the combination has been great!

It might be a slightly older card but it's been able to transcode 4k HDR with no issue. Granted, most of the time I'm streaming to a Shield and it's just direct play anyway.

KODI has been able to play DV for a while.

    100% on Jellyfin,

    combine with Jellyseer

Lifetime means just typical lifetime of product. Say 5 years I reckon. So $25 per year or so.

    • +10

Plex has been around for 16 years…

    • +1

For a physical product maybe. For a software product, the lifetime is ongoing, unless the company goes bust

  • +4

Do it if you want to risk wasting your cash if Plex decides your hosting provider also deserves a ban - https://www.reddit.com/r/hetzner/comments/16j80hw/plex_is_ab…

    Jellyfin looks good.

    • -1

If you're hosting just from home it's fine, but if you plan on using something like Hetzner or another VPS/hosting provider to have it offsite then best to look elsewhere

      • +3

It was allowed to host on any VPS until they decided it was not.
It is, currently, allowed to host on other VPS until they decide it's not.
It is, currently, allowed to host at your home … until they decide it's not.

I was waiting for such a deal to support them but this message was just in time before the sale.
They have one job - to stream your files, it's not their job to check where you host it and what are the files.
Plex is a corporation now, and like all corps, they are bringing their BS to get more $$$.

  • I've had it for a few years for my home server. Have a few friends and family that connect to it. I love how it catalogues all my files, subtitles etc

    • ditto no issues.

The client is smooth and slick, works everywhere.

Jellyfin will get there eventually, the plus about Jellyfin is that you don't need cloud login, on the flipside it doesn't auto-configure remote access.

    jeeeeeeelllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyfffffffffiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnn 😎😎😎

  • OK can someone enlighten me. With this system, you need to provide all the media files? That hardly sounds convenient!? Am I missing something?

    • +7

      Am I missing something?

Only the entire point of a media server, I guess?

      • Looks like I have to find the relevant files to watch manually though? It looks quite tedious and difficult that's all. I am not a huge netflix fan etc but this looks to be quite bit of work etc.

        • +1

It can be a lot of work but it's worth it if you enjoy having a library of your own music, movies & TV shows. I've been running Plex since 2017 and sharing my libraries with all my family members who get a lot of use out of it. It's a great bit of software.

As the other poster pointed out, there are other apps you can use to download stuff automatically but I've never really bothered with that.

        • look at sonarr and radarr, they will manage your downloads for you.

    • Yes, you don't get it, it's ok… go to Netflix
Plex is a life saver, more so when its setup with Radarr and Sonarr

      • If it's a lifesaver, then I am very interested! I have life insurance which I can forego. :)

I looked into Radarr etc. That sounds like it's auto downloading the things for you. Very interesting indeed.

        Thanks for the information.

  • You can't even change the playback speed on their Android app. Not sure about their other platforms.

Is it possible to watch English Premier league live on Plex?

  • Cheers, picked this up, was waiting for this to switch to a lifetime plan.

  • +1

Bought this to support the developers, Plex is a complete and fully functional product without it. So I'd suggest trying it out for a while and if it's a good fit for you, then purchase.

    • Plex isn't fully functional, regardless of your paid status. Any money for bugfixing was spent on adding extra junk features instead.

      • I've been using it for 3 years now and haven't had any issues with bugs, but YMMV.

  • Does anyone have a guide on how to automate downloads on it with Synology NAS?

  • Given up on getting the insanely cheap TL prices for this; tried Revolut and Wise (neither tops up Oldubil), Binance account got locked for inactivity (yay for 3 days to re-open that) and FUPS method is sketchy as hell. Well done to anyone who got it working!

It says expired but still works as of 24/09
