I recommend checking older used Dell Docks from eBay. They work just as good.

    • +5

This one has a wireless charging pad for your phone on the front.

      • +2

        and it’s $149

        • +1

How much do new brand-name USB-C docks normally cost?

          • @eug: I think OldSchoolHarry was pointing out that this is not exactly a bargain. It’s also cheaper elsewhere as illustrated by vnomous below.

            • +4

              @0jay:

I think OldSchoolHarry was pointing out that this is not exactly a bargain.

I was pointing out that the selling point of this dock is the wireless charging pad on the front which older used Dell docks don't have.

Also a used item will always cost less than a brand-new item. I wouldn't go to an iPhone 15 deal post and say "a older used iPhone on eBay is cheaper" as it's understood that used older models will cost less.

It’s also cheaper elsewhere as illustrated by vnomous below.

Yup that's a good find, but it's not what OldSchoolHarry was referring to.

              • @eug:

It strikes me as a lot of money to be paying for this feature.

You disagree. Well, ok. You’re entitled to your opinion.

                  @0jay:

It strikes me as a lot of money to be paying for this feature.

                  You're still missing the point.

You're comparing the price of a used item on eBay to a brand new item.

If you were to buy a new first-party dock even without this feature, you'll be paying more than $149.

OldSchoolHarry said old used docks on eBay "work just as good". I simply pointed out that this dock is different to old used docks on eBay as it has the wireless charging feature.

You disagree. Well, ok. You’re entitled to your opinion.

I'm not sure why you're making things up. Please point out exactly where I said that $149 is not a lot of money to pay for wireless charging.

Read my first post again. I literally just said that this dock has wireless charging. That is it. One line.

My second post stated that a used dock on eBay will always cost less than a brand-new dock. That is not my opinion - that is purely fact. Used items cost less than new items.

                  • @eug:

You're comparing the price of a used item on eBay to a brand new item.

Harry’s doing that, I just made reference to his observation.

My observation was that I consider it a lot for that feature (the feature you highlighted).

Dell gear’s reasonable quality but not premium. If it had premium features (I don’t consider a Qi plate to fit the definition) it’d be worth looking at.

Making things up? I said you disagree (phrased in such a way it implies a tentative conclusion). This sure feels like a disagreement to me.

The above is, of course, just my opinion. It’s nice to relax a bit and not have to preface everything you type with imo but here we are.

That's what I thought too, when I left a single line comment saying this dock has a wireless charger. But here we are. :)

                • +3

@0jay: If you look up a “brand new” dock without wireless charging that comes with a reasonable powerful transformer for power input (90w to laptop), $149 is cheap. Especially it supports 2 x 4K monitors or 1 x4k at 120Hz.

The closest one I can find on Amazon without 120Hz support is over $200.

Fair enough, it’s cool you think it good value. I hope there’s stock enough they can fill your order and you’re away.

            @eug: I buy WD19S for over this enterprise pricing ($190), so…. it's a damn fine deal

  • Use this for my work laptop at home - love this thing. Looks nice on the desk, and the wireless charger is super handy.

$120 at smarthomestoreau but not sure if they are legit? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/126044231316

      • Did they change the price to $138

    • Thanks vnomous, unfortunately I can't change the link without mod approval

Looks like it is HDMI output + DisplayPort, not dual HDMI output + DisplayPort

    • Correct - one of each.

    • They're usually dual DP & 1 HDMI.

  • +1

Maybe I'm expecting too much - but I have a USB C monitor that when directly connected to my laptop will display and charge. My existing dock won't allow for either if I connect the monitor into it (I think it's just a power pass through).

Any chance I can plug my USB C monitor into this dock for power and monitor (and use the HDMI for a 2nd monitor)?

edit: Nevermind (But if someone knows what I'm looking for, please share!)

    • I want the same thing. I can't understand why pass through power means that there's no data coming out of the USB C.

      • I can't understand why pass through power means that there's no data coming out of the USB C.

It's because DP over Type-C doesn't use normal USB data signalling, it requires a different operating mode. The USB chipset on the device has to be able to negotiate the alternate operating mode and reconfigure some of the pins to carry video.

That would cost more money to implement, so I guess dock manufacturers assume users would probably be using their docks to connect their laptops to desktop monitors which have DP/HDMI rather than Type-C-only monitors and just cater to them.

    • Not sure if I this is what you mean, but I had a similar setup via my Dell D6000 dock.
Two 4k monitors connected - one display port or hdmi, and 2nd one via usb-c.
I can't remember if 2nd monitor had separate power connected directly.

      Worked fine for me.

  • Does this have display-link tech? because normal m1's (not 14 16 M1 Pro) don't have dual screen capability without display link.

    • I have tested one and it picked up Display Link drivers

  • Does it come with a power brick? It is a bit unclear from Dell's documentation. Or will you need to buy a Dell laptop charger to get power to this thing?

    • +2

Mine had Dell 135w big square old school one in the box.

    • +3

From what i can tell it comes with a 130w charger with a blue led on the end, mentioned in a review and another video I saw had the same cable used.

    • +1

Yeah it does according to unboxing videos :)

These used to sell for $250-279. They must be clearing them out now as everyone seems to have dropped their prices. They're cheaper on eBay as mentioned above so OP should probably change the link.

      • -1

OK well fair enough, then it’s a great deal! Maybe next time OP should put that in the post?

  • +1

Anyone using this was a Mac M1, M2 et al? Any feedback?

    • It will work with display link software but don’t expect everytime seamless connection. There are times you need to plug into different port of the Mac to have it working and there are times you might have to relaunch display link software for it to work again.

If you plan to give this setup to someone who doesn’t like much about computers, better get a Belkin dock when it is on sale which normally support Mac without DisplayLink.

    • I believe it will only show the built-in display and one external display (it can do 2 external displays but only if they're duplicated. not extended).

    I have this, highly recommended.

    • Thanks, unfortunately I can't change the link without mod approval

  • Can it do 4k 120?

    • No.

  • Interesting product.
I don't understand why they don't unify the ports. Either 2x DisplayPorts or 2x HDMI would make more sense…

  • The wire coming out the back of the unit - what is that for?

    • I’m think it’s the usbc cable that goes to your laptop

      • Correct

  • I've sold a heap of these to my clients for their laptops. They all love it. Only downside is that it only supports 2 external monitors (and if your monitor only has HDMI you will need a HDMI to DPI adapter for the 2nd monitor).

More reliable than the older Dell laptops.

    • I am pretty sure that it cannot be done - but is there a product that will give 2 external monitors on a laptop that has 1 HDMI out and the USB-C does NOT carry video support (Cheaper HP Elite Book)?

      • You can, but my point is just that some docks have 3 HDMI etc. This one has 1 x HDMI, 1 x DP.

You can run 3 monitors with those 2 ports and a USB to Video adapter. It works (have done it) but was just pointing this out as you need an extra bit of kit.

        Personally love this dock.

        • LOL - which piece of kit - my boss bought the cheaper Elite Book and I hate a laptop monitor and external monitor - prefer 2 monitors of the same size (yes I am a Gemini)

I have tried the HP Dock - but that relies on USB-C to carry video.

          • @Sainter Dad: If you only want to run 2 external monitors this dock will do that. I was running 3 monitors hence the need for the extra adapter.

            • @tonydav: Even if there is no Video over USB-C?

              • @Sainter Dad: I'm not really sure what you're trying to do. If you give me some more details I can help recommend a solution.

                • @tonydav: I have an Elite Book that does not have the ability to transfer video over the USB-C

I cannot connect a second external monitor even through this - HP USB-C Dock G5

I need to have two externals - don't care if they are HDMI or DP (or even VGA)

The laptop has USB-A USB-C and HDMI outputs

                  • @Sainter Dad: Okay gotcha.

I would suggest something like this (from Officeworks so really easy to return). I've used this type of thing several times. Also worked on a desktop to give a 2nd monitor when it had no native support

Comsol USB 3.0 to HDMI and VGA Adapter

I think I purchased the last one from Amazon. They're fairly easy to track down and quite possibly cost less than this.

                    • +1

                      @tonydav: Legend!!!!!

                      • @Sainter Dad: Just a small heads up, USB to HDMI/VGA adaptors will use some of your CPU and may have a bit of latency. It shouldn't be a big deal with a decent computer but if you're using an older slower machine you might notice it.

The OfficeWorks one uses a Fresco Logic chipset while DisplayLink is the most well-known in this space. I would spend the extra $20 on a Plugable instead. They also have a dual HDMI model for another $10 on top of that.

                        • @eug: Thanks - am running Quickbooks and Office (over network) I doubt that the Graphic drain will be noticeable.

  • +1

Happy with this - got it today. Super quick delivery from Futu Online/Shopping Express.

There is a very faint click from the wireless charger when not charging - I don’t really care as it’s in my office and I usually have music going.

Desk is a lot tidier now. Running an Alienware 34” Ultrawide and it works fine.

  • I got this, great price, below are my findings:

    • Cannot get it to work with my MacBook Air (M2) :( Still troubleshooting

    • I got a MacBook Pro (Work laptop) = Works great

    • Windows laptop (old one) = Works great

    • Charging a phone wirelessly is not fast charging as some YT videos say but still works fine

    Cheers

    • +1

Did you install DisplayLink driver and gave MacOS the permission for DisplayLink software to record your screen? That’s usually the culprit.
