Not only is Optus the cheapest for the handset outright, but it is one of the only two options that provide a Pixel Watch 2 LTE for free with the purchase. Optus doens't seem to have the Pixel 8 Pro in 512GB - for that, I'd consider Telstra.

Google Pixel Watch 2 LTE Models Available ($649 RRP)

  • Telstra - Polished Silver Aluminium Case/Porcelain Active Band
  • Telstra - Champagne Gold Aluminium Case/Hazel Active Band
  • Optus - Matte Black Aluminium Case/Obsidian Active Band

    +1 for the effort

  • +29

Isn't it much better to grab the HN pixel phone plan on a contract then cancel in the carpark?

    • +3

Agreed, just need a bit of effort filing up Optus form and credit checks. Even if you need the watch, you can buy from Google cheaper than RRP after bonus credit

    • +1

I wonder if you could do that, go on chat with optus say you got the pixel 8 pro on a plan get the watch then cancel and pay the $828.

    • +8

It's certainly a good deal if it works [link for those not in the know] and I was going to post it in the comments.
That one isn't outright and requires a plan (credit check, Optus to have and potentially leak your ID)
Also, when it inevitably comes down in price, you can't claim on your 28 degrees mastercard for that deal.

Doesn't include the watch (which ironically has LTE support for Telstra, but not yet for Optus)

      • +5

        That one isn't outright

You do actually own the phone outright from HN (that part of the bargain is not directly fulfilled by Optus). It's not being paid off on any plan, the only plan you're billed for is the standard Optus $69/m. I know having got my S22 and S23+ this way. Whatever credit check there is was easy and I did this after the hack - regardless there's a very low chance of a recurrence.

      • when it inevitably comes down in price, you can't claim on your 28 degrees mastercard for that deal.

Good point on 28D. Would he price really drop to $800 region in a year or even 2 (Coles mastercard, same retailer)?

What android flagships are good bets to purchase on price protect cards. Amazon AU usually have good price drops so I tend to buy from them with Coles mastercard.

    • Do you reckon you can get the free watch with that deal?

      • +1

On the $69 plan no, terms prohibit any other offers.
On the $99 plan it's included for free.

    • You don't get the LTE watch tho

  • +1

I'm seeing Pixel 8 for A$1,199.00 on Optus

EDIT: Your deal title is for Optus but the link takes you to google store?

    • URL has been updated!

"Not only is Optus the cheapest for the handset outright"

Hi OP, you said outright but there is no option for outright. Minimum 12 months plan is available?

    • +9

Look right below the 12 month button. Like, immediately below.

      • +3

Reading is hard for a lot of people! The outright option is on the page.

        • +5

I’m only seeing a “contact us to request outright price” option?
Won’t let me proceed unless I add a plan?

      • cant find , when i select 12M and click proceed, keeps refreshing and asking for plan or if want to buy outright, chat with us

        • Yep, I'm seeing the same thing, won't let me proceed without a plan selected.

        • if want to buy outright, chat with us

It looks like you can find it. Click the "Chat with us" button.

  • +5

Watch still only works on Telstra network. Do better Google.

  • Nice work, one upvote from me, this was very helpful.

    • +2

I wanted the P8 Pro, and daughter wanted the P8, so figured I'd look at the options. Saved to a spreadsheet and thought I'd share (converted to MD for OzB). Saved me $100+ rather than buying from Telstra (and the watch comes in Obsidian with Optus, which is a 'Yes' from me)

  • It’s not just about handset price, it’s about inflated monthly plan prices as well. Total cost for 12/24/36 months

    • +8

@wots These are the outright prices mate, no plan included/required.

    • Optus is looking to add this capability at a later time, but we cannot confirm when this will be available.

      • Can you guys source these quotes? Google says pw2 works on Optus here https://support.google.com/googlepixelwatch/answer/12652073#…

        • Oh that's awesome to hear! I'll unpublish my comment so it doesn't mislead anyone, though I hope we'll get options other than Telstra/Optus/Voda one day!

        • +4

          https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/phones/google/pixel-8-pro#Go…

Important information about the Google Pixel Watch 2:

          • Google Pixel Watch 2 is cellular, however, the Optus network is not currently able to support its cellular capabilities.
          • Optus is looking to add this capability at a later time, but we cannot confirm when this will be available.
          • This means Optus Watch Plans and Number Share are not compatible with the Google Pixel Watch 2 at this time.
          • +1

@OzJD: Yuk what's the point without number share. Optus are a joke

  • Any easy way to add this deal to an existing Optus plan myself? I don't really want to replace my old plan as all the new ones suck.

If not, I'll try the livechat and see what I get.

  • +1

10% discount codes for the Google store are very easy to get. If you can deal with the rebate voucher being store credit, it's a great deal

    • +2

      How do you get one

      • Studentbeans / Unidays - do a search in the ozb forums and you'll find it

        • Also 10% store cred back under Google One membership.

  • +3

Too much effort. I'm going to cancel in store sitting on one of Gerry's Australian made white couches with my oily mechanc overalls

  • any tips for the best deal on just the new pixel watch? i see theres 10% with student beans

    • +1

$100 google store credit from Google store.

    • +1
      • Student Beans 10% off + $100 credit. Google One plan 10% rebate etc. (Unsure if stackable, best to confirm with Google support chat and save conversation)
      • Purchase on CC with Price Drop Protection if you have one (this one is a huge one for me)
      • The LTE model only works on Telstra right now, so if you're not with Telstra, consider the non-LTE model unless you're wanting to wait for Optus to pull their finger out
      • +3

One 10% back should be stackable with 10% student code.

      • thank you for the help :)

      • Would anyone know if I used the Google Pixel Code from UNiDAYS / Student Beans I would still get the $100 store credit? Anyone tried it already? Thanks.

  • Also worth noting the credit you can get from the Google Store with a Google One plan (up to 10% back).

  • +5

Optus isnt giving option to buy outright, wants me to chat, the first question the guy asked was my full name and number.

Why? I just want to buy the phone lol.

    • +1

Checking if you're an existing customer?

    • +1

They asked for my name/contact number/email address/postal address (for delivery). Didn't try and sell me a plan when I insisted that I know the coverage here is poor, even though the coverage map says it's good.
They emailed me a form for payment, and it was all done.

  • Do people reckon price of the watch will go down end of the year including boxing day? Holding for end of the year trip with TRS

  • +4

Great effort for the info👍. Though for me JHIFI’s trade-in offer is too good to miss. Essentially $299 off straightaway if you trade-in a phantom $1 device.

    • Plus preorder gift card for extra value.

I have seen many people not consider the gift card to not be a real saving…. but i bought the pixel 7 for 675 for my partner earlier this year qith a 150 gift card. Used card to buy her case and will use remainder of balance for my pixel 8 case.

  • +1

Any chnace of signing up via HN, getting watch, and cancelling?

  • +3

As a former Nexus then Samsung user moving to a Pixel 7 Pro, Pixels have been hugely disappointing.
    - Battery life
    - Stuttery performance from Tensor chips
    - General glitches and UI issues

Only positive for me was camera performance on stills. 50-50 on video.

If it were my money, get a S23 U for half the price.

    • +6

S23 ultra is more expensive though ?

      • Check out some of the recent trade in deals here - you can trade in almost worthless products and get $500 trade in bonuses. People were snagging S23U plus earbuds for UNDER $1k.

    • +2

I thought Pixels were supposed to be sleek with a clean UI and bloat-free OS.

    • +1

Same man, I was Nexus 5 then V30+ before this. It's embarrassing how terrible the Android experience is on Google's own flagship.

      • 100% - and I used to be all about the stock android experience - but frankly for most people it's no longer the best android option.

    • I heard Android 14 fixed the battery life issues

  • Will pixel 8 discount more usually on the run up to Christmas?

    • No crystal ball but I would expect from now to the first week or so of it launching to be the best deals on the 8.

      • Best prices before but not after launch?

        • @Fobsessive my guess is before. But i dont have a crystall ball.

Im personally buying before as I'm guessing prices will be best now.

          • @Pidgeon: "Im personally buying before as I'm guessing prices will be best now" this took me three goes to figure out haha

    • Then buy an iphone.

    • Don't you have some queuing to do outside the apple store?

      • Hahaha great call

  • One thing to consider is the value of the Google One 10% or 3% credit.

    • You can buy plenty of fart apps

  • +5

Optus might be good if you don't care about your identity. Last time I asked them about new plan, they wanted me to take selfie while holding driver licence for identity check. Told them to go (profanity) themselves.

  • +1

While I probably won't upgrade anytime soon (just got a Pixel 7 earlier this year and I usually only upgrade every several years), I'm thinking that the Pixel lineup really needs improvements on battery life. It was very disappointing to find that I needed to pretty much straight away turn on Battery Saver mode on the P7. Get that sorted and it'd be a phone I could recommend to anyone.

    • What’s your typical screen on time for your P7?
Surely it’s better than a iPSE2020 with a measly 1821mAh battery. I have one as a backup phone. You can see the % going down in real time lol.
2hrs maximum SOT with my use case. Terrible battery

      • -1

My Moto Z2P with a 3000mah battery (5 years old, 1000 cycles) still has max 10hrs SOT on wifi

  • +2

At first glance, the Pixel 8 looks like a possibility for me to upgrade from the Pixel 5, which I still own and love - no complaints about battery life here.

Personal opinion, but I prefer the form-factor and the finish of the P8 over the P8 Pro..

    • The matt camera visor and frame is better than the gaudy shiny equivalent on the pro.

      • They are my thoughts too, based off seeing the phones on YouTube reviews.

    • +2

Same here thinking of upgrading from pixel 5. P5 had great battery

  • +3

Can you get the Pixel 8 Pro + Pixel Watch 2 on a 24-month contract then cancel straightaway and get both for ~$900?

What's the process like to doing that? OR is that cancel strat only good for Pixel 8 Pro?

    • -3

      There's no such deal lol

  • -5

Just be aware that if you travel overseas, Pixel wifi wont work in certain countries like Sri Lanka

    https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/218124115/pixel…

    • +1

Did you even read the link? lol

Simply put the phone on airplane mode and restart the phone while it is on airplane mode and then check for wifi. The phone should work.

      • Why make the users jump though all these hoops, lol

  • This might be a dumb question but if i go with optus can i just cancel the phone plan after a month and keep repaying the phone?

    • Nope, interest free payment only available when you attach with a plan. If you cancel plan then will have to pay up the remainder

  • -7

pixel 8 about same speed as $200 iphone

    https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/2866477

    • +1

From 5 testing results and 2.5 rating on app store lol

Wonder what happens to the previous link that puts all phones together? Been taken down?

      • -4

        https://browser.geekbench.com/mobile-benchmarks

these results are replicated across many web benchmarks

android users in denial about how slow their hardware is

apparently performance doesn’t matter now because the tensor cores will fix everything with ai tho dw

        • I agree that android was slow before but now even a $200 poco phone can do everyday things fine

Same as the $200 iPhone which literally can still do most jobs however the new iPhone costs 2k for reasons

          • -1

@Bii: just look at the chart man where is the poco phone, the 200 iPhone is faster than the pixel 8

My 100 android phone does everything just fine, but at like a quarter of the speed, I'm typing on it right now, time is money

            • @abctoz: The chart is based on new phones, so I doubt the mentioned $200 is accurate (RRP should be $1.5k?)

In a similar way, you can say $1.5k iPhone isn't much faster than a $300 pixel phone

If you get a chance, you may want to test an old pixel phone and see if it's faster than your $100 android phone

Also, the app needs to work more (to understand tensor chips) to gain their ratting lol

              • @Bii: it’s a basic chart of speed, not price

if you find any android phones around 1600 gb6 for $300 please let me know I might buy one

feels like everyone is jumping on the ai hype, googles got a million gimmicks throwing shit at the wall and see what sticks

even my new cpu has an ai engine, never even used it lol

  • -7

I bought the Pixel 7 Pro a few years ago for $750 (after the Harvey Norman gift card).
The 8 Pro is now double the price??!?!
Is the 8 pro twice as good?

    • +8

A few years ago? Pixel 7 pro was only released a year ago lol
