It kinda feels criminal to selectively cut out part of the specs, especially the only 8GB of RAM. Especially that the core count was left in. Who cares about the core count over ram?

    Still, great price otherwise.

    • +9

Eh it's not really a great price. I remember seeing these same 2020 M1 air models go for $1k used over a year and a half ago. Model itself is over 3 years old.

    • -3

8gb is more than enough for a macbook, this isn't windows. I would run photoshop, firefox, xcode mail and more on 8gb no issues.

      • +8

Come on man, I love my M1 Air but this just isn't true. I find it even struggles with standard editing in Lightroom sometimes. I have a Mac Studio for the heavy lifting.

It's a fantastic computer and I'm sure the 8gb ram goes furhter on Mac OS rather than Windows, but it isn't magic.

        • -2

Just telling my experience. I upgraded to m2 16gb and do not feel any different.

    • +1

it's not such a simple equation with the mac architecture though because it's integrated.

i can do things - multitasking wise - on my m1 with 8gb ram that would have destroyed previous laptops/computers i've had with 16gb ram. it's kind of ridiculous.

for the vast majority of people they will never, ever notice. i only start to run into issues when i'm trying to seriously multitask and whilst maintaining multiple weeks-old browser windows with dozens of tabs each.

      • I would regard this as a high school laptop. Probably the best for that use really.
That said pretty sure Miss Entropy would prefer the M2, because newer

        • i mean, you're welcome to think that, but it's my daily driver for work and life and study and its managed that brilliantly. running multiple heavy programs at once it's just chugged along no worries.

  • Ipad 447 at officeworks so no price beat there

    • When you check the google shopping page, it's showing as $447. When you open Officeworks page, it's $537 as of 9:26pm.

      • Maybe its regional. Showing 447 for me in their webpage for 64gb grey wifi in WA.

The OG air M1 is a great laptop but it’s a bit old now, especially the screen quality now is quite average. It’s the end of 2023 and it still costs like it ages ago

    • -4

… which is still a good deal, because the pay bump for m2 was a lot, and the min level ssd size on the m2 makes it a worse choice than before

    • I wish the M1 was a bit cheaper, but have laptops really changed that much in 3 years?

    • +1

What's wrong with the screen? Mine still runs like the day I got it. I absolutely love it.

      • It’s a basic LED-backlit display. Low brightness, terrible blacks. Of course if you don’t put it next to another screen playing the same video you won’t really notice anything bad, but I’ve had a 13 and a 14 pro and when I put it next to each other the difference was huge.

        • Yeah I just compared with my 13 pro max and it's noticeably lower max brightness. Still decent. Honestly though unless you're a professional media editor I don't think it matters.

  • +5

The Macbook was already $1297 at Officeworks in the morning, so no price beat there and also literally cheaper.

Looks like everything in this “deal" is already cheaper somewhere else.

    • +7

Yeah I saw the price and thought wtf is the m1 still going for that much?

    • +1

Yeah dunno why this deal has been upvoted by 67 people+, this is not a good deal. The original M1 MBA was great for its day but it is very long in the tooth now, 3 years later for the same price.

  • +1

Is this a good iPad? I need one for the kids school next year. Could wait until January I guess….??

    • +2

      100% sufficient for kids

    • +1

You can cut the budget by around $300 or more for a tablet good enough for most kids in school.

    • Hundred percent the best option to get for the kids. The 10th gen is a lot more. Whatever 11th gen will be another price bump again

    • Wait until Jan) Feb for Apple's back to school promo

    • This is the last one with a headphone jack… next ones won't have them so bluetooth headphones meaning extra $$$…
I'm in the same spot. Getting a 9th generation late December so warranty lasts lol

      • 64gb though is not enough. If you can afford it, go for the 128gb

        • Totally agree 64gb too low. My little one was doing pictures and video homework and it filled up fast

      • +2

or an adapter? USB C its quite capable

    • It depends on the school. I’ve heard of a school that expects kids to do video editing and processing on their devices, and the assistant principal advises getting something with as much memory as possible. Basically turned the BYOD program into an arms race.

I have price matched at Officeworks as they were selling $537 as of 7:30pm 18 Oct. It's still at the same price at 9:30pm. When you check google shopping site, it shows as $447. Then, click the hyperlink and it shows as $537 on officeworks webpage. I think they will change the price soon. Hurry up if you need one from OW.
I used 15% off gift card from Coles. I will claim TRS too. Great price!!

    • how did you price beat after 6pm?

      • +1

        In-store?

      • +1

officeworks near me opens till 9pm

        • didn’t realise officeworks was open past 5, never shop there haha. my local’s open until 7, but i can see others are open until 9. good to know.

    • That people is how its done. Bravo

  • +5

MacBook Air was $1277 last week!

  • Hope the M2 Air refresh isn't far away.

Keen on the 13" but too far into the refresh cycle so have to wait

    • +7

It’s already been. Months ago. You’re waiting on M3 now.

      • +1

June 2022 is more than a few months ago, with only the 15" being released in June 2023.

M3 Air wont be until next year so just have to wait until then.

        • Don't you dare make me feel old.

  • +5

Very bad deal for macbook air m1. It was 1278 AUD on Jbhifi and officeworks. And It is a 3 years old laptop. You can buy Asus zenbook 14x, Lenevo Yoga pad 6i that are cheaper than this old laptop. 256 gb memory is a big turn off

    • +1

I’m an Apple fan, but I agree.

It’s only $50 cheaper than it was in April 2021:

Got one for my daughter when she was starting uni nearly 3 years ago for around this price. Got one for my wife a couple of months ago for less than this current deal.

The model may be 3 years old and being Apple it isn't cheap, but it is more than good enough for 95% of people and is a great quality device with excellent build quality.

My son is using a 2017 macbook air model as his high school daily driver and its absolutely fine for everything he needs. Picked that up for I think $370 in mint condition with a new battery.

        • if its more than good enough for 95% of people, then other equivalent 3 year old devices that are hundreds of dollars cheaper with better specs will be too

so how does that make this a good deal

  • -2

Asus and lenovo aren't as fast. If you compare everyday use and browser speed, the mac just opens things quicker

    • Brother, There are many laptops available as good as Macbook. Although the deal expired but you can buy it next time hopefully.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/804416

      • +3

I guess if you value other things, then sure. But purely speed+ battery life+ fan noise, the M1 and M2 are king.

You can look at real world speed tests between the 1240P and M1's

        • -3

Your just an apple fanboi, just ranting about how Macbooks are better, grow up, he was showing that there are other options, and you just talk your apple BS.

          • +3

@Unbreakable: I don't own a single Apple product, but fundamentally geshc is correct on Macbooks after the M1.

The most important aspect of any laptop is the battery life, and the battery for this generation of Macbooks is above and beyond the rest between $1000-$2000.

    • how many seconds browser loads pages isnt really a ground breaking litmus test of whether a laptop is good enough

if you never brought it up, majority of people wouldnt even think about it or notice. its just something fanbois drinking the marketing koolaid like to point at like its a useful real world feature

for the majority of people standard mid range laptop processing with sufficient ram and ssd storage will be enough for their needs

any differentiation is just splitting hairs

M1 chips only advantage is being fanless. and battery life. But id argue outside of tech enthusiasts i dont think majority of people are that bothered by fans. and if battery life is so critical to you that you cant top up within 4-6hours, then you are no longer a "general user" as you become someone with specialised needs

    new ipad announced this weekend?

  • +2

8 GB was woefully inadequate for my needs and may am be for yours too. This should be in the title.

    • +7

Delete this deal, it doesn’t work for this one guys very specific use case.

  • +1

My phone has better specs than this.

I was waiting for watch ultra 2 but their pricing stopped me. 800 USD = 126x AUD but they sell it for 1400 AUD LOL

    im going to macbook instead

    • +1

You must have a big wrist

    • +2

The extra bit is the tax, USA price doesnt include tax in the price shown, it is only added at checkout.

      • oh it makes sense if it is true..

but ultra 1 was 800 USD too and was 1300 AUD RRP. currency rate didnt change much

also Australia's price is the highest price of apple products.

  • Stack it with 8% Discount on Ultimate Gift Cards deal via Amazon for a better bargain!

  • Not a macbook fan but my kids have started new school and macbook is compulsory. I have managed to buy one for $1160 and one for $1180. (office works price match and Amazon). They are just amazing laptops with awesome resale value.
