Extra 15% cashback ($20 cap) + bonus 10% Westpac cashback ($30 cap) from ShopBack

Edit: looks like JB, Harvey Norman and Breville direct have restocked the Dual Boiler. Been oos for ages!

    • +9

Breville realising many sales of Dual Boiler better than minimal sales of combo pack

      • They seem to bring Dual Boiler stock out around like Black Friday and Boxing Day but rarely anytime else

    • I don't know why, but Breville website has been redirecting me all over the world. I double checked and the AU site still has no buy button and it's OOS in Amazon, so I'm assuming their official store is still not in stock. They appear to be stocking HN, JB, DJ's etc first

I bought one of these for two (profanity) grand mid pandemic. Its been awesome

    • +10

      Nah. I didn't like it.
      I mean, the pandemic.

      The machine is great though.

My 4 year old DB is up to around 3,900 shots, I reckon about 50% are real ones. At $2,000 and (say) 2,000 shots, you would be waaayyy in front of buying individual coffees from your local coffee shop.

      YMMV of course :)

      • Are you saying you pull a dialling in shot one every 2?

        • +3

Or pulls one to heat or flush clean the handle/baskwt. Though these do have a heating element there though. If you peave the clean handle installerd, ours turns on 15 minutes before i get up and its ready to COOK

          • @Ademos: Oh my lord, my fat thumbs murdered this post.

        • +5

I would assume flushing the group head after pulling a shot.

      • +2

        6 years and 11,000 shots, she’s a work horse.

        • Have you had to have anything replaced on it yet?

          • +1

@kiitos: i bought mine in 2016 for $700, last year i had to replace the inner shower screen ($15) but earlier this year had to spend $300 to fix the steam tank leaking (causing the temperature to shoot higher than 100 C due to the steam leaking all over the inner case)

            • +1

@meong: Ouch for the steam tank leaking!

I've had to replace the inner shower screen (plastic?) as well. Was fairly straight forward.

I've also had leaking steam wand, that was a bit more complex and required a bit of disassembly. But didn't cost anything as I just had to flip the o-ring.

The pre-fusion only works part of the time now, I read it's a solanoid? But I'm thinking about doing the free slayer mod, turning off auto pre-fusion, and then controlling the pressure using the hot water tap. Which is free.

              I picked it up in 2017 for $639 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350211

              • @Name: i too was thinking doing slayer mod but cant you just control the pre-infusion by holding onto the "manual" button?

                • +1

                  @meong: Duration yes, pressure no.

                  • @Ademos: yeah true, but that might fix the "pre-fusion only works part of the time"?

                    • @meong: yeh, unsure as I haven't heard of that trick before. I'll give it a go for my afternoon coffee and report back.

                      • @Name: Unfortunately it didn't work. Machine just stayed silent (timer was still running) until I let go and then it went straight to full pressure. Will need to either swap out solenoid, if that is what it is, or do the slayer mod. I reckon I'll do the slayer mod rather than trying to troubleshoot why the pre-infusion is intermittently working.

                        • @Name: good to know… thanks for confirming!

                        • @Name:

Maybe your brew pump is dying.

Maybe… maybe this is something to do with solenoid valve. But the valve is either closed or open. And you should hear a click when it changes its state.

The lower pre-infusing pressure is done by running the pump "slower". There is a believe doing it kills the pump premature but it is such a nice advanced feature some more expensive machines don't have.

Are you getting full 9 bar pressure after pre-infusion is finished?

                          • @SickDmith: yeah, getting full 9 bars. This morning I paid a bit more attention in the silent house and could hear a very light "buzzing" sound when the pre-infusion should have been running.

I also tried stopping/starting it multiple times before it came on full, with no luck getting it running. But, after I pulled the first complete shot, when i went to run it again for the wife's coffee, the pre-infusion worked. Might have just been a fluke, will need to try it a few more times. But unsure why letting it run full would allow it to run 'slower' on any subsequent shots.

                            • @Name:

                              very light "buzzing" sound

You were right - buzzing sound usually a sign of a solenoid valve issue.
I think it can be cleaned up (reconditioned).
Worst case - you buy a brand new one for ~$60-$70.

              • @Name:

                This is the way.

            • @meong: Thanks for that, I think mine is one the last ones with the old style fittings (built early 2022) so expect I'll need to have it looked at at some stage.

          • +1

            @kiitos: No, touch wood.

        • OMFG!

    • Mine has been through so many Aldi beans it's not funny. Well it's at 2k shots.

MAke sure people use dimineralised water (reconstitute) to avoid descaling this one.

      • Less of an issue with melbournes good water.

I have been waiting for this for over 6 months! Thank you!!!

    was $999 before

I always tend to think that for the same price, a used high-end machine will be better than a new Breville.

    Like this https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hurstville/coffee-machines/n…

For almost all home baristas, a heat exchanger machine is going to be functionally identical to a dual boiler as well. Even with a PID, unless you're very, very good and precise, the difference in an espresso shot taste will be almost undetectable. If you're making cappucinos or other milk-based drinks, the difference WILL be undetectable.

    • +2

They changed the fittings on the dual boiler, so it doesn't leak like a sieve after 2 years

      • The seals aren’t that hard to change.

    • +1

What would be the advantage of such used machine? Would you notice the difference in an espresso shot?

      • -2

Mainly quality of workmanship and durability. One of my high-end Hx machines (a Grimac) is over 15 years old and still working perfectly. I don't think you'll find many Brevilles doing that.

        • The price point would differ quite alot between something like this and a high end machine, HX or not

          • @Paudius: Did you even click the link above? You can get a high end used Hx machine that will last a decade for the same price.

            • @sheikyerbouti: What sort of maintenance etc needed on those babies? Quite curious on this one.

            • +1

@sheikyerbouti: I did after you prodded me to, whilst I respect your choice of going a high end HX thermal stability wouldn't be the same.
Will leave it up to personal choice

    • +1

Come back to me when youre pulling 6 for dinner guests, while someones steaming.

      • You don't know how an Hx works? You can steam while pulling shots, that's what it's designed for.

    • +1

Be prepared to wait 30 mins to let it warm up before making a coffee if you want temperature control. Also 5x power consumption and higher maintenance costs.

In my opinion the bdb is far better for home use and I have used both types of machines.

  • +2

With the way things have been going I’d be very surprised to see the sub $900 prices again on this

    • I’ve been waiting for the $900 again to snap it up.
      Maybe Black Friday?

      • +1

it has been out of stock since August in most retailers, if you're not dying you may get a better offer… but it might be short lived

  • Does anyone know how much power these things use, compared to a Barista Express? Physically they take up much more space, especially given that you need a grinder as well.

  • +1

    thanks OP..

    • +2

I've been lurking for some time but time to bite the bullet and upgrade my old man's EM6910

  • +1

    The king is on sale.

  • -1

i only drink 2 coffees a week at home , i guess i don't need this kind of machine

    • +1

You will drink 10 coffees or more per week if you get this. Maybe you do need it.

  • +1

Suggestions for decent grinder to pair with this?

    • +4

      Eureka Mignon series are excellent.

      • Confirm, go with the Eureka Mignon Specialita or Turbo a bit better and expensive

  • -5

Pass. Breville pro does the job fine.

    • I'm looking forward to seeing what my dad can pull out of this machine, it's a 58mm and quite a bit more smarts than my little Bambino Plus

  • +1

I miss the days when these could be had for $6-700.

    • Right?

    • Yeah its crazy that back then can be had for the price of barista express easily and now we got so much upvotes for a price that is not even sub $1000

    • Same. I remember the days that petrol was 80c/L also. NOISE TIMES!

  • Does this have the new compression fittings, sensors and tubes?

    • Considering they changed mid last year, you would hope so! I would go scout out the s/n if you have any doubt in store

      • Should we target a 2023 production?

        • +1

I'd be pretty confident 2023 would have all the improvements. Considering it has been out of stock for so long this would be a new shipment, so likely have a week of manufacture post 26 I would imagine. I will report back when I get mine!

  • why do retailers have "discount applies when added to shopping cart" deals? is it to avoid other retailers trawling for competitor prices that are lower and matching them? or something else?

    • Goodguys price match policy does not match 'listed' price

  • +1

Next, spend a grand on the grinder and maybe a couple of hundred bucks on accessories, WDT, filter basket VST, naked porta, puck screen, a good pitcher, new latte art cups, hehe

Going to make myself a shot now..

  • On the flipside, we've gone through 3 of these since 2012… admittedly we haven't tried to repair them, which looking at the above may have been inexpensive (1. would have been shower screen, 2. not sure as gave to my parents as we picked up a new one on sale, 3. likely the steam wand, as it reads like the overheat comment above).

I think these machines are unbeatable for the price given what they offer. The newer units are also meant to be much improved in terms of longevity, but our current strike rate is roughly 3 years before it dies… grabbing a second hand Linea Mini instead.

    • yeah mine had a $550 repair when I bungled a descaling procedure on mine. I didn't think descaling could damage it but it definitely can becuase apparently the steam boiler can keep running causing the fuse to blow. The fuse is cheap but to replace it is a pain.

The repairers were dodgy though and I think they charged me $300 more than they should.
