  • I'm interested in doing some homelabbing, ideally setting up things like home assistant, plex and eventually kubernetes. Is this a decent buy for that type of workload? Ideally I'd like to run k8s bare metal but buying multiple of these might be breaking the bank…

    • They should be more than enough.

  • Do these come with a genuine power supply? The one I ordered from them last year came with a generic one. The computer died a few months ago with a burnt component on the motherboard near the power connector so I'd rather stick with genuine power supplies.

    • +2

Yes they come with genuine psus

      • Any good deals on laptops?

      • Yes they come with genuine psus

Thanks, that's a much more reassuring reply than what I got from you on eBay:

"It will come with a power supply that will work for the unit."

Just arrived. Got to say I am impressed this time. Got the same unit from these guys earlier this year for $240 w 8gb ram only (refunded $40). it was full of dirt and dust, the case was broken in multiple spots, no onboard wifi etc.

This time around the device looks almost brand new, no dust, onboard wifi, 256gb nvme.

    i5 8th gen from 1995

  • Hmm, I take it i cant put a GPU in here, is a Micro smaller than a SFF case or similar? Is it closer to a mac mini and those other mini pc sizes?

    • +1

GPU would definitely not fit, these are fairly small. You would need one of those external GPU chassis.

  • @Calmago, Any idea when we can expect another MS Surface deal?

Got a surface laptop deal lined up for the Black Friday week

Just sharing. I got my two units today.

    8500T CPU
90W power supply Dell original. Brand new power cables.
    1 x 16GB RAM stick 2666MHz on one unit and 2 x 8GB on the second unit.
    1 x 256GB Micron NVME SSD, 1 x 256GB Toshiba NVME SSD
Blue bracket for SATA in both units
Internal WiFi and Bluetooth with external antenna for both
    3 x DisplayPort on both
    Cosmetically flawless
    Very nicely packaged.
    10/10 from me.

Currently running memtest and other benchmarks.

  • What are you guys using these PC's for?

I'm thinking of buying one. I only do work/ word etc on it. And occasionally play a game like age of empires 2.

Arrived in record time cross country - it was at Brisbane Airport within hours - that's some slick operation, OP.

    In receipt of:

    8500 CPU
    90W power supply
    1 x 16GB RAM DDR4 2666MHz
    1 x 256GB WD M.2 2280 SSD
    Internal WiFi and Bluetooth
    3 x DisplayPort
    W11 pro

Everything in great condition, well packed, up and running.

Great to have another win with ACT - that's 4 pcs and laptops now.

The cpu is running at 800mhz due to needing a 130w power with the 8500 vs 8500t so might check if there is one lying around to spare.

    • That was a different deal, though - since it's the 8500, right? This one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204360599455

      • I think some have received 8500. It is like pot luck.

        • Damn, I definitely wanted 8500T

      • +1

It was this same deal - as Ronney said there seem to be a few 8500 versions in there.
I was expecting the 8500t but the 8500 is all ok if I can get the psu sorted out.
Will have to check idle wattage - the 8500t sits around 9w for me, which is pretty good.
Anyway, great machine. Got the caddy and all.

    • +1

Following up - ACT sent a 130w psu straight away - fantastic result, really appreciate it

  • I ordered one. Definitely expecting 8500T

  • Would this be an ok computer for basic word and internet browsing, and the occasional age of empires?

    • +1

Yes. Although this deal has ended.

  • Great value pickup. Came with Win 11 Pro which is a pleasant surprise.
1 DIMM free as well which is handy.

  • I have hdmi monitor cable; what’s the easiest way to join that to the display port on these computers?

  • Here’s something i dont get. If a machine has hdmi, i can hook it up to a receiver to watch movies with surround sound. If the machine has only display ports, then i’d either have a sound card or no surround sound? Thx

  • Oh dear, some ppl have been getting 8500's? (Non T)

That would be a complete showstopper for me, and clearly not what you ordered!

For some people it could be seen as a free upgrade I guess.

    • Haven’t yours arrived yet?

      • I didn't get one this round, got one previously.

        • Ah ok. I thought you are concerned that you might get a 8500.

  • Anyone from Melbourne want to swap their 8500 with a 8500T?

    • Just out of curiosity, why would you want to swap?

      • +1

Nothing specific. I bought a few and all of them turned out to be 8500Ts. Just want to try out a 8500 too.

        • +2

The performance difference between the 8500 and 8500T is nothing to write home about. However, the 8500T has half the wattage and lower thermals which makes it a superior choice for the small form factor.

          • @captainmac: Thanks for that info. I will probably stick with my 8500Ts.

BTW you mentioned in a precious comment that you ran some benchmark and performance tests. Could you please let me know what tests they are? Thanks.

            • +2

@Ronney: I performed primarily Memtest to check the RAM. I also ran Speccy to check the NVME health. I was going to run Passmark just to check against the average but didn't get around to it. After running memtest for a few hours the system did get quite toasty (52 degrees or so). I'd hate to think how much hotter they would have gotten if they were 8500s and not 8500Ts. I'll most likely reapply the thermal paste just for my peace of mind.
