      OP, You also have to nominate an emotional support emoticon to get into the OzBargain secret handshake club :}

      • +4

OP is off to a great start with all this sage advice. You could say they’re on a roll 🙂🙃🙂

    • -7

I says OP is off to a good start. He didn't ask for niceness, which is codeword for attack for the rabid dogs.

  • +60

watch out for their $10 port out fee and $10 sim replacement fee

    • +5

I was going to play port in port out with them. Saved me $20. Cheers

    • +20

wow the port out fee is nasty
never heard of this from other telcos

      • +12

        Nasty. Never using TPG

      • +2

Vodafone is $8 for any postpaid plan

    • Horrible

    • +1

    • +3

      Ouch. Yeah nah I'll pass.

      • +3

Stay strong, OP. It’s just one neg… we still believe in you

    • +1

and watch out for TPG in general

    • +1

$10 only? My port out fee was $11 last year!!

      • +4

sorry, you are right. it is actually $11 instead of $10

        https://www.tpg.com.au/sites/tpg/files/doc/Brochure-TPG-Mobi…

and you need to give them notice if you want to cancel

4 If you have not given at least 14 days notice of termination prior to the expiry of a billing month, we will debit the next month’s minimum monthly recurring charge 7 days prior to the commencement of the next billing month

    • +6

It’s $11 port out fee. I just dealt with it yesterday.
Customer service rep a week ago told me if they don’t have my payment details on file they won’t charge it. So the lady kindly removed my payment details and there you go.. I didn’t have to pay the port out fee of $11.

By saying that the person who was responsible for my account was the most hopeless person ever, didn’t know anything about TPG, kept calling me back to ask questions why I was leaving TPG and in the end I definitely left because of her. 🤘🤯🤘

If another telco asks you (at the customer's request) to port out a local, mobile, freephone or local rate number, as the losing telco, you:

    must port the number
cannot refuse or delay porting the number even if your customer owes you money.

    https://www.acma.gov.au/port-customers-phone-number

Does this mean they have to port out the number no matter what?

    • +8

Yes, but they can still chase you for any owed funds - including port out fees

    • +1

Does this mean they have to port out the number no matter what?

They have your bank payment details so they will charge you no matter what your feeling is LOL

      • Revolut card with no funds on it could stop that

        • +2

They can still chase you for the money you owe them and that you agreed to pay them.

          • @spaceflight: Yeah they absolutely can, I wouldn't do it but it does counter the poster I was replying to

        • Revolut card

People keep using this cheap chip but Revolut has changed many rules like now you must upload your photo ID (people used to open and close accounts) so now you're accountable for the misuse your account.

    • No telso can refuse a legitimate port out request

First post, first comment, and joined today. You’re about as green as they come.

I should say something about this deal so that I’m not off-topic. Something constructive. To set an example. Oh yeah — wth does TPG stand for?

    • +7

I used to work for a small software company around late 80s and we used to sell hardware as a system integrator. We sourced hardware form this guy David Teoh who had a small startup called Total Peripherals Group.

      • Even later than that. I moved to Aus from the UK in 2001 and our CRM PC here was from the same company. Can't remember the spec but certainly late 90s.

        • -1

          2001/late 90s isn't later than late 80s.

          • @NoApostrophePlurals: Late to the party, but late 90's is in fact later than late 80's. I think you mean to say late 90's is not earlier than late 80's, in which case you would be correct.

  • How does the network compare with Optus?

I left TPG (and no more) many years ago so are they still bad?
What about their port out number and pay $10 fees, if the service is bad you port out and lose money!

  • +7

    Vodofone network…Pass!!

    • Says the Optus customer? Lol

      • +5

        Says Telstra customer…hahah!

          • +2

@billadm: Have to say, we have been with TPG for probably more than 15 yrs for our home internet. No issues with their support staff or connection service. Very nice to me when I asked them for a replacement modem/wireless router just because it was getting a bit old and I didn't want to be out for more than a day.

Didn't know about the $10 port out cost though as I need Telstra for my mobile.

        • Oh man, my commiserations to you.

I was chatting to my friend who needs to be on Telstra, heads to the country occasionally, he can’t believe he has to pay 4x the price for one day a month that he needs that extra coverage.

          • +2

@cloudy: Get them to try Boost then - I believe that uses the full Telstra network.

          • @cloudy: I head to country most of time and I have never paid for extra coverage. Of course I had to purchase Telstra Go antenna to maximise my signal strength when I head to country. I am not sure what your friend is talking about!!

      • Optus is so much better than Voda. If I'm out in the middle of nowhere I'd be a lot calmer with Optus than Vodafone. Voda literally didn't even have any reception in my office building in the middle of the cbd.

Also how convenient they run this promo after what happened this week. All very opportunistic. People have to remember this is the first time I can remember that Optus network had such a a dropout in the last decade. Before their woke CEO started doing nothing, Optus had no such issues.

        • +2

How convenient is it to run this promo after what happened in the last week? This promo has been running for more than 6 months, you'll find this with a quick history search.
Not that there would be anything wrong if they or any telco ran offers off the back of what happened with Optus, it's not against the law, plenty of telcos are making a joke about it on Instagram ads, it's all tongue in cheek and quite entertaining from a marketing perspective.

        • If i'm in the middle of nowhere, i'm on Telstra/Boost. Anything else is a fools game. Generalizing among Optus/Vodafone is meaningless, it's predominantly localized experiences based on whatever few towers you connect too and how congested they get. They both work fine everywhere i go (currently a mix of boost and vodafone/kogan in our home).

    • Yeh Vodakrony bought TPG TPG bought IINET Internode et al The Global corporatocracy control the Earth

      • +1

Actually, Vodafone and TPG merged. Then the Teoh's cashed out. A wise move by them i'd say as you can only grow a business so big the way they were.

    • I've used the Vodafone network for 2 years now and it works perfectly and everywhere I need it to work so it's different for everyone.
(I live in a capital city).

    • +1

      Votafail

      • +1

That burn in itself is a fail with the typo. It's Vodafail.

        • +1

Yes, you're right. I failed. I will quit my job tomorrow and work at Vodafail.

      • -1

        So original.
That's equivalent to a "dad joke" nowadays.

  • Does TPG uses their own Network? Or leasing it from Telstra/Optus or Vodafone?

    • +1

      TPG owns Vodafone

      • Wow. So Boost Mobile is to Telstra what Vodafone is to TPG?

        • +1

Boost has a partnership with Telstra and I think Telstra owns 50% of Boost Australia. What I do know is that it using the whole network but capped speed.

      • -5

Vodafone aka Vodakrone OWNS TPG Group Vodakrone is GLOBAL and ready to use and take our info and AUSGov digital ID same as CHINA-COMMUNIST aka SingaporeInc Aka SingTel aka Floptus

        • +3

There’s a lot to unpack there. Thank heavens we can rely on Telstra as one of the Five Eyes

        • +4

Vodafone global is one of MANY owners of TPG group. Major shareholders are also 3/Hutchison, Soul Pattinson etc. They are a publicaly listed company now on the ASX since Vodafone (VHA) and TPG merged. The rest of your comment requires a napkin to wipe the dribble.

      • +5

        TPG owns Vodafone

        Not quite

In 2018 Vodafone Group Plc (“Vodafone”) announced that Vodafone Hutchison Australia Pty Limited (“VHA”) and TPG Telecom Limited (“TPG”) had agreed to merge and form MergeCo.

This happened through VHA acquiring 100% of TPG's shares, which turned TPG into a wholly-owned subsidiary of VHA.

Vodafone and Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Limited (“HTAL”) each own an economic interest of 25.05% in MergeCo, with TPG shareholders owning the remaining 49.9%.

As part of this VHA was rebranded to "TPG Telecom Limited"

The rebranded TPG Telecom is the parent company to Vodafone.

    • For mobile, MVNO. For broadband, it depends

  • +1

Had one of the earliest TPG mobile plans from the good old days ~$15/mo for 2GB or similar.
It became a grandfathered plan but then they pulled it altogether.
Left TPG, initiated a VISA chargeback for the month they charged me for after porting out and cancelling.
TPG refunded the $20 and VISA decided in my favour and also refunded me.
It was deeply satisfying that the extra $20 covered the port out fee, $20 at the time.
    TPG bad, Boost good.

    • +1

      It was deeply satisfying

Can’t ask for much more than that out of life. Not to mention that they pulled your grandfather

    • I might be thinking of a non-refundable $20 deposit for excess charges. It's been a while, 15 years sure goes fast.

  • +4

Well done on your first deal post OP.

It took me 5yrs since I first joined to post my first deal post

    • It’s not the length of the runway, it’s how high you fly

      • +1

You need to take off before you can fly

        • I guess flying is the easy part when you consider how damn hard those deals are to land sometimes

  • +3

$10 port out yeah nah. Not good TPG… if going to stay for discounted period only, extra $1.6 per month to be factored in

    • +6

$11 port out actually. The only mobile service provider that I know that charges this fee. It is ridiculous

  • +4

Port out fees? Do they also run a video rental business from the '80s with membership fees? Pathetic.

I seem to vaguely remember being on a plan in the past where they asked you for a $20 deposit up front, refundable when you left. I can't remember what company it was.

    • +2

Hahaha, you reminded me of the boatload of late fees my old man incurred with blockbuster/ezyvideo during their dying days, they kept calling but he reckoned he'd outlast them.

      Turns out he was right.

  • +3

TPG is probably one of the worst ISP i ever use….

    • -1

No wonder they bought vodofail. Birds of a feather flock together.

  • +5

    Port out fee

  • +1

The port out fee should be added to the main post as many may not read all the comments and this fee is rarely used by other telcos

  • Never TPG. scumbag of all Telcos, period.

  • Not a fan of Vodafone. I was burned badly during the vodafail fiasco a few years ago. Never went back.

For me, Ill wait and see what Optus offers after last weeks SNAFU. I'm sure they will be hemorrhaging subscribers this month and highly likely they will need to respond with enticing deals.

That said, haven't paid a cent in mobile costs this year. Keep toggling between Boost and Lebara. Boost is better. Keep paying for a $4 Lebara starter when they are on sale, then churning to boost when they give $3-$5 cashback. That said, I do not expect this to last. Only a matter of time before number crunchers at Boost tighten belts and I need a new permanent plan.

  • Never again after Port out fee last time
