Personally would wait for the OLED Model.

    • +5

$549 usd to the cheapest OLED option which is at least $835 aud, so around $920 after gst

      • +3

Kogan has the 512GB OLED for preorder but they are charing $1299.

        • +4

Yeah you're not going to see the OLED for close to price + gst for a long while.
Postage costs are probably $75+ each.

I'm sure we will eventually see prices lower, but its probably going to be a year till we get sub 1k

      • +3

And the reseller cut, so around $1320.

        • +1

plus postage costs for them to import from wherever to Aus.

      • If you can afford the OLED and dont have to pay international delivery + gst then absolutely.

But only get it if you're fine paying the amount for it.

      • +1

No brainer much cheaper there, got the 64gb model for low 500 Aud and 720-30ish for the 256gb (which I assume how much the oled would cost maybe slight more) as I was Japan during the steam deck sale.

        • +1

          84,800 jpy I believe.
          So $871.44

Nice price if you can snag one up while you're over there!

          • +1

@ihuntbargains: Should be cheaper than that if you show your foreign passport to the clerk at the store - they take the Jp sales tax off the price so it ends up being 5% cheaper ($820 ish)

Edit: sorry no it’s 8% now so we’re going to get the OLED 512 for around $800 AUD or less, right?

        • which month they held the steam deck sale?, I am in Japan next month.

      • +1

I'll be in Japan at a similar time too. Thinking of grabbing this deal for now and selling it later if I decide to grab the oled in Japan

      • Bro same I’m also going to pick a 512GB OLED Steam Deck up tax free when I go there in April next year.

Do bear in mind though that apparently you can’t open it until you’re on the plane out of there - they do check that it’s still sealed in its packaging at the airport when you leave apparently. When you buy it in the store - they staple to receipt to your passport or something I have heard, and enter it into a database that comes up at customs when you are leaving. Or so I’ve heard.

        • +1

It varies. They put some stuff I got at a chemist in a sealed plastic bag that I wasn't meant to open, but nothing went in my passport and no checks at the airport. My wife bought a new suitcase tax free too, though there were no restrictions on using it (thankfully - that would have been awkward) and I don't believe there were any checks at the airport.

A few years ago I bought a coat and they put the receipt in my passport, though there were no restrictions on use and no check at the airport. I think I was meant to show the item/receipt somewhere in the airport when leaving but I forgot, and there were no consequences. I got rid of the receipt later (it was super long and bulky, so had to be folded up to fit in the passport).

        • +1

They don’t check I actually asked at the airport as I had everything in my luggage. The JAL check in lady said there is no need to do. YMMV.

        • This is not true about keeping it sealed. It only applies to certain categories of goods (e.g. consumables). It's all documented on various websites. You may need to show it on exit but I was not asked to show anything on the way out, but be prepared.

I had a steam deck, we had bought cool sneakers, heaps of stuff from uniqlo etc all tax free and was not asked to show anything - goods or receipt.

      • If they even have stock. It's gonna be scalped as shit for first few months

        • When I was there they limited it to one deck per customer (even if you are a family) had to go to yodabashi and edion to get mine as I needed two.

Unsure how much of a hard check they do though but they had to enter my detail into the system so I kinda assume they would know I had purchased one if I went to the same chain?

      • Do it mate it looks super nice. I got my non OLED one there in Sept (tax free of course). Look out for it at BIC camera stores in the major cities, and I think they even have a store stocking it at haneda airport.

    • Haneda airport has it

      • i think thats the pop up so for anyone not going Japan until next year it probably wont be there anymore

    • First time steam deck wanter here. I'm in Japan now but any opinions on whether it would be worth getting the Oled version at non tax-free prices (~$873) given the only store that sells it right now doesn't do tax free?

      • Refer to all the comments above.

      • Yes I believe it would be worth it. $873 AUD is still a banging price for the OLED steam deck.

      • Yes

  • hard to tell if HODL or not.

    hmmmmmmmmmm

  • +1

Also one ROG Ally in stock at ATL ( I think ) https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/126003907518
    $935.22 with ebay plus

    • Nevermind. One slightly cheaper here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175805254378
      $934.44 with ebay plus

      • Man rog ally prices have dropped off a cliff.

        • +1

They're in a really rough spot in terms of specs and price.
          So it was inevitable.

      • +1

lol they literally had 2 in stock and all gone now

  • +2

    Blah

  • +2

I would say go for it, and don't wait for the OLED mode if you need a Steam Deck.
    Performance is practically the same.
And I can't say that my SD's LCD screen is bad in any way.
And, as said above, the price will be much higher, and it's really hard to justify that difference in price.

    • This + 1TB SSD from AliExpress or the 512GB OLED?

      • +4

The new OLED has a lot of improvements other than just the new screen. Faster RAM, bigger battery, new thumbsticks and buttons, etc. Would absolutely go the OLED if it were me

      • Honestly, both of those options are decent.

I upgraded my 64GB Steam Deck and it was easy enough, need to be careful not to strip the screws though.

OLED + 512GB gets you better hardware and you still have the microSD card slot.

It really comes down to price/availability/if you can live without OLED.

        • What's the price difference?

          • +4

@vash12: Kogan’s asking for around $1,300 for the OLED, so substantial currently.

            • +1

@Marrk: Wow… might as well get the Ally or legion at that price…

              • +2

@vash12: The Steam Deck is a game console where you have the option of tinkering if you want to (tinkering optional) whereas a lot of the competition is gaming PC’s in a handheld form factor (tinkering often required).

After using the Steam Deck, I have no desire to use a similar device running Windows.

                • +2

@Marrk: I heard SD still can't run a lot of games due to the anticheat issue in Linux?

                  • @vash12: I know some games are an issue, depends what you want to play/I don’t play a lot of online competitive games apart from Rocket League.

    • The LCD screen is absolutely usable but its objectively bad. Blacks are grey, lots of LCD lightbleed, 63.7% coverage of sRGB colour gamut. Couldn't say the last screen i bought of any kind that was like this.

Also essentially every other area other than performance was improved (performance was improvement by a few percent too I guess)

  • +2

The price difference between OLED and this one is big enough that you just gotta base it on how much you're willing to pay.
I'm tempted to upgrade mine to an OLED, maybe if I can get one in Japan next month, like others have mentioned.

  • Hmmm, I had told myself I would get a deck of one dropped below $650. But now that the 64GB has been replaced by the 256GB as the entry level option, I feel like I should hold off a bit longer.

    • If it’s purely just the size (64 v 256) and not OLED, can’t you just get this one and upgrade storage?

      • +2

Yeah definitely, but my point is that I can only see the value of the 64GB going down. I may still end up getting one, but I'm willing to wait a bit longer.

        • The 64GB model has been discontinued. Considering it's the cheapest path to a 2TB Steamdeck ~$840 for a 64GB + 2TB nvme) I can't imagine it will drop any further. If anything the price might increase slightly.

    • Depends if you are happy to wait another 6+ months, otherwise keep an eye on the used market as people will upgrade.

  • +4

Price Jacked, now $767.20 with the 20% code

  • I would say get the OLED if you are not budget constraint and can wait. The improvement of OLED is pretty significant with all the overall hardware upgrade/fixes on the steamdeck.

  • +1

Aaand they jacked the price right as I was entering the gift cards I bought for it

      • Perfecto, thanks!

      • Darn, looks like it doesn't work with the 22% off

        • Yeah not sure what happened.
          It was working before.

          • +1

@ihuntbargains: Luckily managed to grab this other one for a similar price, but they just jacked up the price as well. Does seem like a few other ones removed the coupon too

  • -1

Why do people get excited over OLED on small screens?
OLED while far superior only really becomes a significantly better as you increase its size, who cares if you don't have inky blacks on 20 pixels in the top corner of a 7 inch screen.

    • +6

The oled version has better hardware overall.
      Battery life, sticks etc

      • +2

That's fair enough then, at least its not just a screen for double the price.

    • +3

Well that entirely subjective - I like inky blacks no matter the screen size.

But also with regards to gaming: response times - OLED has a much faster gtg response. And this one is 90hz which means your input latency is cut down as SteamOS will help set your refresh rate based on your frame rate, often you'll be in a container that's 2 or 3 times the frame rate which massively helps reduce input lag. DF recently did a video showing that OLED vs LCD model has an average of 20ms lower input lag, which is quite a big deal if you're playing at 30fps - definitely noticeable (for some)

And it's not just the screen. The new model has a smaller chip (less power draw), larger battery capacity (OLED also consumes less power), and faster RAM - so you'll get more consistent frame times.
