    Man i thought it came with a RTX 3060 for a sec

    KAMRUI deals surely have better specs than this for similar price

    • But it is gone.

      • Been new deals just about every week, can't be long

  • What are the physical dimensions of this thing?

  • Or for $100.62 with ebay plus, with larger SSD in the m720q range - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/266512196858

    • but no inbuilt wifi

      • Compared to the m720q posted, not the dell.

    • +1

      m720q has a PCIe slot too :)

      • what's the build quality of the m720q like? I tried an hp prodesk and was underwhelmed compared to the various Optiplexes I've owned

        It looks ok based on https://www.servethehome.com/lenovo-thinkcentre-m720q-tinymi…

        m720q also has intel LAN :D

        • +1

          I haven't really had any HP micro form factor PCs, but have had Lenovos and Dells (Optiplexes). I personally find the build quality of the ThinkCentres to be better. M720q is a nice little machine… if I had to pick one con of this compared so a similarly spec'd Optiplex - the SATA connection uses a ribbon between the SATA connector and the mainboard… the OptiPlex uses a more elegant solution (i.e. connector is soldered directly to the board).

          Isn't that much of an issue, just have to be a bit more gentle with the ribbon if youre working on the PC.

          In short, I think the build quality between the ThinkCentre and the OptiPlex are pretty on par.

          I have 2 i5-8500t m720q 32GB running proxmox. Very solid build and reliability. Wish mine had vpro, but not a huge loss.
          The ability to add PCI-E for further networking adaptors can be a killer feature eg 10gb networking.
          USB-C on the front can come in handy too

  • how do these compare to the mini PCs that were coming up the other day? Im looking to set up a media center (essentially moving away from my android TV to use a PC as the media system).

    Like these: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/812890

    • do you need transcoding or just local playback?

      • not sure! I just wanna download the apps like youtube, netflix, etc, and then connect it to my TV. Would be good to run apple music to my speakers too.

        My TV is good enough but Im sick of clunky android TV

        Would also get one of those bluetooth keyboard tv remotes

        • +1

          If just apps, have you considered an Apple TV? The $100 of this machine would be better put towards an Apple TV if you don't like the Android TV ecosystem, plus no stuffing around with Windows either.

          • @bdl: Reckon this would be a good little Plex machine?

            • +1

              @Shroomlet: Really depends what kind of source material you intend on using - looks like the CPU can only transcode two streams of 1080p according to https://www.reddit.com/r/unRAID/comments/g5fygk/comment/fo36…

              I'd probably wait a little bit and grab another box with a more powerful CPU which would future proof your machine for not much more. Beefier i5s in this form factor pop up every few months.

              That being said though, this box is good as a mini linux server or replacement for a raspberry pi.

              • +1

                @bdl: Thanks so much for the advice. I'm currently running off my main PC (i5-6500 CPU @ 3.20GHz) with 1080ti and considering if it's not just more efficient/lower running costs running a dedicated Plex machine.

                • +1

                  @Shroomlet: You may want to upgrading your main PC next time there's an 8500 deal and then you could always use your existing i5-6500 (with or without the 1080ti) as your local media and/or plex box, only powering it on when needed if you want to save the electricity…

                  using this deal as your primary plex box will only cause you frustration in future when you hit it's CPU limitations

                    @bdl: Thanks amigo, really appreciate the advice : )

    The Pentium Gold was an absolute waste of a processor. Had one for a while but it lagged so bad I got mad. Can't even imagine how slow it would go with win11.

    • ^^ This guy is the real MVP.

  • +1

    Would this be able to run any basic games? something like minecraft on the lowest settings?

  • Thinking this might be a good router-on-a-stick spare 🤔
    I'm currently using a HP G2 800 mini with the i5 6500T - idles at 8-10w so am pretty happy with it so far but would be good to have a spare in case it goes tits up.

    • Either that or if you have proxmox somewhere you could always spin up a VM for your spare… which gives you time to source a replacement, rather than go to a slower box

      • Yeah I just checked the performance difference between the two.. this one isn't great. Same power usage for significantly less performance…
        I will just wait till a better deal comes round for a newer gen one I think..

        Right now the plan for it going tits up is plugging in an old consumer router, not the best but better than nothing.

        • Second hand Telstra smart modem from eBay often has the sim card not-disabled, too :)

  • @MetroCom Does the Lenovo M720Q have onboard WiFi?

    • Not the one listed above

  • Bought a dell3060 . Better gpu(uhd630),no more extra for wifi card. Low power use(15w power use to watch youtube fhd).got too many kinds of optiplex in home, otherwise I will buy more.

    Bought Lenovo ThinkCentre M720Q Mini Desktop G5400T. I did the following modification using some repurposed stuffs:
    1. CPU: G5400T changes to i5 9400 (65W); did stress test and seems all good (with original Aluminium heat sink, and keep CPU Turbo On at Bios);
    2. Ram: add another 32G stick;
    3. Remove 120G SATA SSD , add 256G M.2 NVRE SSD;
    4. Add wifi card removed from Lenovo M700.

    The removed G5500T is then installed on Dell T40 tower but it seems the energy saving is very limited (originally Xeon-2224g).

    The mini-pc comes with activated win11 pro and becomes the fastest pc i broght in recent years for my own use.
