The ones the other day were ‘refurb’ and these days ‘seconds’ … any difference ?

Feedback on previous deals suggests that whereas previously these were cleaned, inspected, repaired, these are now only checked to be in working order. Some people are scoring new with damaged boxes, others are clearly used and have scratches, hair etc.
Definitely seems to be quite hit and miss. I think I'll pass and just wait for a pair of brand new XM4s to hit sub $300.
I bought one during one of the refurb sales in July. Packaging exterior was damaged and was labelled "Seconds". Headphones was visually brand new. Couldn't tell a difference between my seconds and a friends brand new unit.

I've had a pair of these for quite a while now and they drop massive sh!ts from a great height on the others in the price point.

xm4 can fold away into a travel case. IIRC xm5's are fixed shape.
xm5 has much better mics.
I wish these were more comfortable. I had to sell them, my ears were always hot and felt like they were being squeezed. But I was sad because they sounded better than any other headphones I've ever had. If anyone knows of a different brand with a similar price and performance (but more comfortable!) I'd love to see it.

I use my bone conduction headphones in summer because the xm3's get sweaty.
YMMV but I literally wear those every day for 10h a day with no issue. Way more comfortable than Bose headphones I was using before
Same. Never had an issue wearing mine 10+ hours WFH or in the office.
I have the XM5s and read these types of complaints before I purchase. I suspect it might have to do with head and ear shape because I'm very picky with comfort and haven't had any issues.

I always wonder how they are getting so many seconds/refurbished headphones. Are there lots of quality issues or do they have a very lenient return policy? Quick search says they don't offer change of mind refunds.
Have a pair of original 1000XM, one of the hinge is damaged but functioning well. Main issue is it gets warm and uncomfortable if you wear them longer for an hour. Thinking of trying a bose, nearly got the quietcomfort SEs but think I will wait for the ultras to discount further.

Bought a pair of these in one of the last deals and was pretty disappointed. Sound quality is average (I have headphones 1/4 of the price that sound way better), noise cancelling not as good as Bose, touch controls don't work half the time, and the feature that detects when your wearing them seems to never work, they shut themselves off while I'm wearing them. Have read similar reports from other users with no solutions from Sony.
Sounds like you got a dodgy pair tbh. I haven't had any of those issues and they sound fantastic.
