how is this compared to firestick 4k? i have firestick 4k but chromecast 4k at this price is tempting

    • +3

I don't have a firestick, but I think these are fantastic products. Being android-based, you have a huge variety of apps. If set up correctly, the remote also allows you to control the tv volume and on/off.

      • +1

Firestick much snappier and faster - Chromecast user

    • +1

less amazon bloat on this device, and more app support

    • +1

I prefer the chromecast having owned both

      • Any particular reason? Fire TV Stick 4K Max @ $54

I have a Sony with Android TV, I find the Android bloat frustrating.

        • +2

better interface IMO but you can do almost the same with both

        • +2

I have this, nvidia shield tv pro and firetv 4k max.

For me Nvidia shield tv pro for SD to HD upscale. I Felt the colour output of google tv 4k on my samsung 85QN90b was nicer than other two. I felt the output of Firetv 4k max least appealing. But it depends on how ypu tune your TV as well. UI as well, Google Tv and shield wins for me.

          • @EssendonUser: Google chrome gives it a bit of tint and increases the brightness and contrast on TV settings.

    • +2

As a longtime FS user, now moved to Chromecast + Google TV

The latter wins. It is more responsive, the remote is better once you work out where the volume buttons are, and the app store hasn't been castrated.

    • +1

Firestick 4K is about as slow as CWGTV but the Firestick Max 4K V2 is faster plus has 16GB storage versus 8GB.

    • firestick lacks chromecast screen mirroring of android devices.

      • +1

Air screen app can solve this.

I wish it could add miracast to shield TV.

        • thanks
saved me from buying this I already got firestick 4k

    • These arent chromecasts but google tv….im replacing all my chromecasts (even the ultras) with these - they are brilliant.

  • Does anyone have experience getting Amazon to price adjust? I bought one on Wednesday and it hasn't arrived yet but I contacted Amazon chat twice and was told to return it and buy another which is baffling. This is usually what happens to me but last time I did get a price adjustment and people on here say that they have too.

    • +3

It's a stupid, default, un-environment friendly Amazon policy sadly.

      • Buy this and return the other one. even better - refuse delivery and it will go back to amazon saving you hassle of dropping to post shop. have done it in past.

        • Can you please elaborate on how to refuse delivery?
My Amazon parcel with 2 WD RedNAS drives, which cost me over $1000 delivery man thrown over fence. Other left packages at the front door, not chances to refuse.

        • +1

Unfortunately they just keep it in front of the house and leave. Some ring the bell some dont.

    • I bought one on Wednesday and it hasn't arrived yet

Just return the first one when it turns up.

    • Similar situation… it also wouldn’t even let me purchase one at this lower price due to “purchase limitations” so I mentioned this and they put a credit onto my account. Happy to just take a credit and not have to worry about doing a return and whatnot

    • Ask for an immediate voucher for the amount of the Google Chromecast so you can reorder it for $48 instead of price adjustment. Tell them that you don't want to spend another $50 and once the first order arrives you are going to return it back.

  • These are great. You can get cool covers on Amazon too

    JBhifi is $39
    Ordered a couple this morning

    • +4

Showing as $79 for me, unless you’re referring to the HD model

      • Yeah, my bad. Apologies.

I only needed hd so as to drive some speakers.

        • +1

          $38 if price match + perk :)

        • Better cancel that morning order!

          • @pizzaguy: Is it an email to cancel or just ignore?

        • What speakers are you driving? Bluetooth or HDMI? I've got an unused one at home and was going to try and use it as a music steamer.

  • This saved the travel. I guess I will cancel the HN one

  • Is this better than Fire TV 4k Max?

    • +4

about the same processor speed and same 8GB storage as the basic Firestick 4K. The Firestick 4K Max Ver2 is faster and has 16GB of storage.

  • Are these like a mini nvidia shield? can I install HDHomeRun and Plex client on it etc?

  • +1

I have one of these and a bunch of firesticks and a firestick cube. Sideloading on the Chromecast is a bit easier, I will say that If you like certain sideloaded apps, the firestick seems to natively block some of the in app google adds. On the Chromecast, certain games / apps that have those full screen ads or pop over every few minutes renders some of them unusable.

So far the sticks have been the best option (even better then the cube). Just my 2c.

  • Is the user interface on these better than that on the Firestick?

    • +3

In my experience, as an owner of both, it's a definite Yes.

      • I find the Firestick UI a bit busy. I might give one of these a go.

  • -6

    under $10 soon

  • +4

THanks - and thank for the person with the $7 off tip for parcel pick up

  • I've been getting dropouts/ducking when using any sort of surround sound, which a lot of other people online have complained about. I can solve this by plugging into my AVR instead of the TV directly, but then the Chromecast sometimes fails to negotiate 4K, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Happy with the other one we have (HD) plugged into a normal TV with no external sound.

  • +1

I heard that there maybe a new model getting released next year, could be why selling cheap.

I don't have a 4K TV so no need for this but almost bought it anyway! Good price.

    • -4

What does not having a 4k tv have to do with buying a media player?

  • If you have native apps on your 4k TV will they be the same quality as this anyway?

    • If it's a hi-end TV (esp. with built-in Google TV), then potentially yes.

      Otherwise not necessarily.

    • I have the Samsung top end 8K TV, struggles on Plex codecs.

Other apps work fine directly on the TV

  • Will they ever release a version that doesn’t require this to be plugged into external power? If so, it would be super useful!

    • They won't. It would need batteries then. HDMI doesn't provide power.

    • I think it was possible is power it off a dual head usb port cable so it delivers enough power. It is dependent on the tv USB power outputs

    • +1

That's an odd use case but I know previous Chromecasts worked from USB power on the tv.

  • If you have TCL C845 Tv then would you still need to have one of these? Sorry I have 0 knowledge regarding these technologies 🥲

    • It will make no difference besides having a more fancy tiny remote and maybe slightly faster response time. Again maybe. TCL have Google TV OS

      • Thanks for the info

    • I find my C845 very sluggish, but it still works. Depends if you want to put up with the lag..

      • I see
Then i need to try mine and find out.
        Mine will arrive tomorrow

        • +1

I was going to change to a Chromecast, I ended up fiddling around with developer settings and disabling multi background tasks. 0 apps run in background

          • @R3XNebular: Thanks for sharing your experience. I will try that ☺️

  • Support bezos not gerry

  • +2

Owner of both firestick + chromecast. Firestick is a pain because the initial page you always have to choose a profile (you can't choose a default to load into).
Chromecast just launches straight into the default home screen.

  • Thanks used $20 storecash the good guys gave for an error and got it down to $28 via chat

  • You guys reckon they might do a new generation soon? These seem kinda old tech…

  • Be aware in 4k some shows stutter and loose video sync with the audio. It was the most evident with Yellowstone. I so want to love these… but…

  • If I don't have downloaded content (so won't be using plex), only use youtube + netflix + disney. Is this better than the nvidia shield pro 4k? Is the AI 4k scaling worth 5* the price?

    • Not worth 5x
