This looks like extremely good value to me…..what's wrong with it?!?! XD

    • +4

It looks like it's got pretty crappy plastic build quality chasis. The keys are probably plastic feeling and clicky. My guess is rub out or fall out after a year or so. MSI, not known for quality build. No dedicated graphics. Screen looks average too. Not sure about the CPU but its probably dated. Clearing out old units. 700 bucks sounds about right.

      • +1

CPU is Zen 3 architecture and came out in January, not too bad but not Zen 4 either.

      • +2

well is $688 are you expecting more?

        • +3

If it dont come with 144Hz 4k oled panel, 4090 graphics card for a princely sum of $700. Why bother.

          /s

    • I'm going to say the display (270 nits max). Can't confirm but unsure if it's 100% sRGB or coverage for colour spectrum.

Also the hinges will probably be weak so no rough handling.

For the price it's got good specs but it will definitely have weaknesses. School laptop (fine), parents browse the Internet laptop (fine).

Gaming and video/photo productivity (Not really).

      • If the build qualtiy is crap there mist be a way to fuk the hinge right or else whats people gonna do with all the crappy cheap laptops with broken hinges

        • +1

Usually it's the little holes that the hinge goes to in the case that break off (grommets). The hinge itself is metal but connects to super weak grommets (ask me how I know ….)

          • @amaslam: I hsd a dell laptop that failed on me, is there an easy solution to fix it. One of the eeason I am never buying plastic chassis

            • @mikeoxlarge: Most of them are plastic bottoms unless. The only fix that has worked for me is a new bottom plastic case (usually $80-100) You can try supeglueing the grommet back (if you can still find it, they're tiny) but I don't know how long it lasts. Basically something to provide the case screw something to hold the back case on.

  • Why MSI never improves? Making only kids toy plastic laptops …

    • Plastic lighter

MSI prestige is pretty up there. Pay for what you get it's got nothing to do with brand.

    • +14

yeah why arent they selling you top of the line for $700 you deserve it

    • I had a previous model of the Modern 15. Can confirm it was pretty crappy. I think they are a low end model. The chassis and keyboard were rubbish. Also battery life was underwhelming.

Online search reveals 270 nits (from trustedreviews.com)

    • I got the MSI MODERN 14 14" FHD for the kids. The screen is not that bright but I could not complain for the price($660) either.

      • I think the price is great for the specs. Good laptop for kids or wife for basic computing. If screen was 300 nits, would be ideal. Couldn't find battery size, but who cares at this price. Next best thing with a R5 & 300 nits screen is Lenovo 82XLCTO1WWAU3 (with screen upgrade) for $769.

Thanks - bought one for the MIL

This is a great laptop for the price. Some notes:

    • ~250 nits.Perfectly adequate for indoor usage, however you wouldn't want to be using this laptop outdoors.
    • ~56% sRGB coverage. For office, studying, and desktop usage, this will be fine. Media consumption is barely tolerable. Not suitable for content creation.
    • The USB-A ports are USB 2.0, you won't be getting much transfer speeds.
    • The RAM slots are upgradeable, there is no free slot, but you can go 32GB if you want.
    • Very awesome processor. Great performance.
    • The USB-A ports are USB 2.0, you won't be getting much transfer speeds.

Eww… I guess fine if using for Mouse/External Keyboard.
Should be fixed pretty easy using a USB-C hub though?

    • The USB-A ports are USB 2.0, you won't be getting much transfer speeds.

The spec sheet provided at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14741877/redir suggests 1 USB-A port is USB3.2 Gen2, as does https://www.msi.com/Business-Productivity/Modern-15-B7X/Spec… . I'm hoping these listed specs are accurate.

The RAM slots are upgradeable, there is no free slot, but you can go 32GB if you want.

I've read mixed reports the B7M's RAM is upgradable as well as not, see here. The spec sheets don't suggest there's upgradability, but do say the max RAM is 16 GB. Again, I'm hoping it is upgradable but it won't be a dealbreaker (at this price point) if it's not.
