Great deal, they are $55 each at most places.
Within 120 metres it works with Bluetooth (BLE) otherwise, it needs the Galaxy Find Network and Galaxy device users have to be around. See Samsung's How do I find my SmartTag?

        • Which is the best tracker for luggage on international flights (Asia, Europe, North America)?

        • +3

What? Almost every Korean I have come across uses Samsung. Hell, at one of my work's big global meetings, there was a running joke about how every person from the Korean delegation was using Samsung

          • +2

@PCHammond: I live and work in Korea, and I find that all my Korean mates use iPhones, which is odd considering Samsung is a Korean brand.

            • @HojuGuy: Interesting.
Our Korean delegation was mainly 30+ (it was damn hard to determine how old they were), and all had some super duper top of the line Samsung

Then again, some of those employees worked directly with Samsung, so they may have been given special deals

            • @HojuGuy: its because Samsung phones cost more in Korea than they do in other countries for some reason.

          • @PCHammond: Depends on demographic. College aged and early 30s 40s use iphone now.

      • +16

Check the Carexpert review. Samsung tags won vs Apple in Australia. Samsung devices are cheaper than Apple therefore more likely to have more of them across the country/globe.

        • +2

Honestly my original purpose was not start an A vs B thread but since you guys like to push it that way and I replied someone else already, I may as well reply to you as well…

          Try this:
          https://gs.statcounter.com/vendor-market-share/mobile/austra…

          and this:
          https://www.statista.com/statistics/861577/australia-mobile-…

          • @syswong: YouTube doesn't lie though…

            • @10101010101: Mate that statement is so wrong!!

I think it depends on the situation. My point was statically the number of iPhone in Australia would mean AirTags should be far superior, other comment and quotes claim the other way. So may be I will get one from this deal and test myself.

          • @syswong: Market share based on $ or number of users? Since iPhones only release a few variants each year, I still believe that the number of Samsung users is higher.

Once Google into the market for this (soon?), the number of Android users will be by far more than the 2? Samsung then can integrate with Android.

            • @Bii: if you are refereeing to the number I quoted than the difference is so far apart that it is unlikely there is more user. The rest Android user number is simply insignificant.

Someone also just point out for a device to be able to communicate with the tag, the device has to be on Samsung network which is an optional action for Galaxy owners vs Apple you are compulsory to log into your Apple account.

              • @syswong: For the market share in AU, iPhones indeed did better than Galaxy phones in the last few years. Of cause have to factor the cost of iPhone > Galaxy phone, So iPhones should be still more in number of active users.

But comparing to Android, iOS held a bit less in AU based on this graph.

In the future, worldwide Android tags have more potential. Though current AirTag is still my first choice if I use an iPhone.

        • +4

Currently travelling through Europe. I have a Samsung device, my wife Apple. We threw both an airtag and a smarttag in each of our cases.

Have not noticed a difference between coverage of the 2. Both have frequent detections by other device owners when we're not nearby.

          • @sloshie: Thanks for this. Been thinking of getting the smarttag for our upcoming Europe trip

      • +2

Is this bluetooth off due to power issue a known thing or is this something anecdotal or an assumption?
Samsung also has a bigger marketshare than apple now

        • +3

When the govt tried to implement their covid contact tracing app, it was specifically the iPhone that they had power saving issues with when the app was in the background as well as when the phone was locked. Samsung happily runs Bluetooth and multiple apps in the background which could be why the Samsung tracker performed much better in Car expert's review.

          • +1

            @particle:

iPhone that they had power saving issues with when the app was in the background as well as when the phone was locked.

Correct but that issue was with the Cellular modem and Wifi, not the Bluetooth which Smarttags uses.

God that app was a waste of time and money!! Even people work in that project don't know how it is so badly excused (I know someone who is)…..

        • Its easy to find an article to support an argument, for example I can use this:
          https://www.androidpolice.com/more-people-use-iphone-than-an…

Your quote from statista is a good reference except its behind a paywall. May be you can share some of the content with us?

          • +1

@syswong: The purple bar is samsung, light grey is iphone, you can see enough of the graph to tell that the purple is much bigger

            • -7

@GetFitWithCameron: Not according to other statics that argue against that. Try to find a clearer figures to argue if I was you.

and like I said there are many factors that affects the operation of these SmartTags. Just for example, there is a lot more Samsung in Philipine that iPhone because the low end Samsung is all they can afford. How many of these user you think will have their Bluetooth on?

              • @syswong: Have you got anything showing an alternative for in australia? Unless you have anything backing up what you say, I am the only one with multiple sources to back up my claim and I have no reason to continue with this otherwise with your unfounded claims

You are like a trump supporter. My opinion is right and I ignore all sources BLAH BLAH BLAH china \

Get out of your echo chamber and look at the stats/facts

        • The SmartThings network does not operate how you think it does.
You could've found that out by looking at the settings on your device.
          Location > Location services > Wi-Fi / Bluetooth scanning
Connections > More connection settings > Nearby device scanning
Samsung account > Find My Mobile > Offline finding

          • -3

@Techie4066: and how is that related? 🤣🤣

Do you even know what that feature does? I do because my wife has that setting enabled and I use that to track her when she go hiking…..

            • +2

@syswong: Everything you're raising is not a concern for people. The SmartTag operates far more effectively than AirTag in Australia as is. Unlike AirTag it has shown in tests that it provides nearly instant updates, location history and much more precise pings.

              • -1

                @Techie4066:

it has shown in tests that it provides nearly instant updates

Lol, that doesn't even happen with the Samsung devices itself🤣🤣

      • +6

Also Samsung user are more likely to have Bluetooth off due to power issue,

        What a load of bs.

        • +2

Exactly..most people have earbuds and smart watches… right?

          • @sam cho: Yes and BT power usage is tiny anyway. Never met anyone turning it off to save battery and i have helped heaps of people with their phones.

        • -1

Well not a lot of BS if a phone is not even log on Smasung network.

At least some people can think practically. I personally know half a dozen people only use their Google account with their Galaxy.

      • power issue ? first Im hearing of it and its widely known Samsung phones have way better battery life than any iPhone.

        • -2

Concurrent Samsung and Apple user here and I can tell you that is still the case as of today. It got better when S23 using the SD chipset, but still no match to iPhone 13 pro. I imagine the 14s and 15s battery performance just get better.

You can see plenty of Youtube battery test suggest the same. Its all about what you choose to look at and what to ignore.

      • +1

I've got both Airtags and these Smartags. The Smartags give me much better results in terms of real time updates and location accuracy.

  • +1

This or keep waiting for the Google chipolo?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/785803

    • reviews chipolo arent good? and sound like food that name

      • +6

Best to reserve final judgement though until the Find My Device network launches

        • Cancel preorder then 🤔

          • @impoze: We've been waiting 6months I think.
Still no ETA when it will launch.

            • @Jessie Ryder: Yeah these posts keep reminding my about that preorder

    • +4

I’m waiting for the Oppo Chipotle.

    • I gave up on the chipolo when i realised google are still faffing around and chipolo have not even shipped anything months latter. My guess is their bsttery life will suck as a 1st gen device.

  • How do i get access to GG commercial?

  • Good price. Have had a good experience with these so far.

  • Have anyone tried tracking car with this?

    • -5

GPS tracker with mobile network access are much better for this task.

Main reason is Apple and Samsung has criticise their tags can be use for stalking so they are forced to put anti stalking feature in the tags make it no longer stealthy. People always have have things to complain!! What a bunch of thugs! A perfectly good idea / product destroyed.

      • +9

Women are killed by their partners/ex-partners at an alarming rate. Possessive men using tracking is part of that picture. I'm glad the manufacturers have put in features to allow someone to know they're being tracked.

        • +1

We are talking on the car tracking purpose here, a SmartTag that go buzzing and keep coming up on the car theft's phone is not an ideal tool for car tracking isn't it?

          • +4

@syswong: SmartTags (or AirTags) are not meant for tracking stolen items, or people.

Hence the privacy protections in place.

            • @b3au: This is actually why I've got smarttags, in case something is either lost or stolen, and if it's the latter then hopefully they don't find the tracker until they get home.

If they do find the tracker after they get home, then the location history of the smarttag would at least show where it ended up last, as well as all of the places they've been to with the stolen goods before they found the tracker.

              • -1

@particle: Some political corrector will say "This is not suppose to use for lost and find"

This is exactly why I think the anti stalking feature is actually stopping people from buying this. There are certain groups in this modern world always polarise the bad and minimise the good.

For one I think tag are good for tracking those with kids, without running the risk that their smart watch and phone running out of battery. Then people will jump at this in no time and say "what about the child predators?"

    • These guys did with the old version and it worked great
      https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-reviews/car-tracking-apple-…

      • +2

The test also illustrate how the Tags wouldn't work properly if there is no phones around them.

New GPS tracking units covers all mobile spectrum 3G/4G/5G and multi bands. The best one I saw covers N78 and N5 which means if you put a Telstra sim in it, you are likely to get signal in most populated areas and not having to rely on other phones.

    • It's not ideal for car tracking if you're looking to track whilst it's on the move. If it's stationery for longer periods of time then sure.

  • Can't find anywhere to Pickup in VIC. Delivery only? Or do you have to call like the previous post?

    • it seems lots of the stores dont have stocks, maybe you need to pay $5 or more for the delivery. it is still a good price considering excluding postage.

    • +1

Call GGC on 1300 225 564, they’ll create a phone order for you to collect in store. There is plenty of stock, just not visible on GGC website.

      • +2

Just called GGC and they told me that there are no stock in WA. WA store will receive stock on 1st Jan. So either wait till 1st Jan or order now with delivery. If you order with delivery then also the ETA is also 1st Jan but you can secure the price $106 (including delivery) - not sure around 1st Jan the price will go back to normal or stay at $101 .

    • +1

In this case maybe there's no stock. But in general the ggc website is trash so first use good guys normal website to see in stock pickup locations and then call their number to get a commercial order for those stores. Don't ask me why the normal website works but the commercial one doesnt…its stupid… They look like they use the exact same stock checker but the commercial one is garbage

  • +2

I've got these. They're great. Use them in my luggage for travel, keys, work bag, and would be great on a pet collar

  • +1

These are fantastic. The uwb finding makes them more than worth it

  • Thanks for posting. C&c doesnt seem to be available in Brisbane 🥲

  • +1

My only concern with these would be the extent of the SmartThings network overseas (travel being one of the main use cases for these).

I've been waiting patiently for the Google Find My Device network to launch so I can compare networks, but there's no clear ETA on that - annoyingly, it's because Apple are dragging their feet on privacy protections in iOS (for a company that prides itself on privacy, they seem to conveniently go missing when it helps to stifle a competitor)

  • +1

No click and collect in WA.

  • +2

Downside is you need a Samsung Galaxy device

I still think Tile is better as you can use on any phone and lots of users

    • +2

      Tile is crap

      • +2

        not the Tile Pro 2020

replaceable battery , 122m range and also network of users to position the location if lost

        • +4

I can't imagine there is much of a network when everyone wants the apple/samsung tags.

          • @samfisher5986: well works for me as I been to various locations in Australia and overseas and seems to have picked up by other users

one time I left my tile pro in my car at for a service which I went away for holidays

it managed to picked up the location of the tag while I was overseas and let me know like e.g. 5 minutes ago tile was a x location, 30 min ago, 47min ago etc etc haven't seen it not update for more than a day. There would be plenty of users around at least for now

I think there is a version called Tile Pro 2022 but you can't buy this in Aus but you can still add it and use it… good range and replaceable battery too

    • I think you can't change the battery on latest tiles so once they're dead, they're dead

      • I have the Tile Pro 2020 and they can

        very decent

current tile mate is 3 year battery but $2X for 3 year use is not bad

can get the tile pro 2022 too which you can replace the battery

    • Tile is likely heading down since Android and iOS native options are available. It's probably fine for short term though.

      • -1

yeah I guess that can happen to any product but I'm happy with their product for now

  • Showing $169 for me?

    • Weird glitch, it's now back to $101.

      • showing $169 for me too at the moment. Not sure why you got negged for your comment..

  • +3

There's no way for me to get TGGC membership and that makes me sad. I've been looking for a good deal on these tags. Was so close.. :(

    • Same :(

    • It's often offered as part of a loyalty program, so you may have access through your employer or super fund. Some NDIS plan managers offer it too.

    • +1

I bought a set of these and don't need all four. Happy to post one for $35 incl postage.

    • +1

Likewise, no possible way to get TGGC and been after these since release.

      • +1

I signed up to g'day rewards (https://www.gdayrewards.com.au/) $50 for two years. Got me The Good Guys commercial entry after registering and creating an account.
Considering how much these cost in general, well worth it. The Perks of the g'day membership are also with it for me cause I go camping often. I just ordered the tags.

I'm paying $151 technically but that includes 2 years membership to g'day rewards, access to TGGC & other partners AND the tags at this awesome price. $156 if you're getting it delivered.
        Pretty happy now.

        • Thanks for the tip. Decisions decisions…. I'd never use anything from gdayrewards.com.au so it would only be for TGGC access. And i've never seen a deal come up on TGGC before where i thought damn i wish i had it. So the likelihood of using TGGC again is likely to be slim, and there's no GG store within a 2hr round trip.

So…. it's a gamble on if i'd just be paying $156 for the tags which is essentially retail for them. But cheers heaps for the info.

    • +1

Sign up for rest super. No need to put $ into it.

    • I am an account manager for TGGC. If you have a legitimate business, I can set you up

  • +13

I've got the previous version and an Apple Airtag. I've got a S23 Ultra and an Iphone 13

The Smarttag often out performs the Airtag when I bother to check both at the same time. And the Smarttag app has more options and more information.

I'm buying a pack of these for my extended family for when we travel since everyone has a Samsung.

Honestly who bloody cares if the Smarttag or Airtag is better. Both will find your stuff. Just use the Samsung one if you have a Samsung and an Apple one if you have an Apple. The differences are minimal.

    • +1

Keeping it real, I like it

  • Sorry absolutely beginner on these items.

The airtags seem to be able to track the location using an apple device virtually anywhere. Eg people tracking where their luggage is when travelling.

But this item tracks it 120m away only, its in the description.

    Am I missing something?

    • Both runs on the find iPhone / Find my Samsung network via bluetooth from the respective manufacturer's handset. Aka AirTag only works with iPhone and SmartTag2 only works with Samsung.

  • The number of times the old version has saved me wandering my house looking for my keys… Bargain at twice the price.

That's what I use it for, I can double tap it to ring my phone, and I can use my phone to find my keys.

    • Just leave your keys in one place?

      • I should… I don't. My car needs the key to open the bonnet… That's twice I "found" them still 8n the bonnet lock. Love these little things.
