    • Oop forgot to include that in the desciption, thanks.

  • It's out of stock until Octorber apparently 😂

    • Where are you getting that?
Estimated Delivery Time Frame: 4-12 business days

      • +2

It was a joke at their spelling of October but whoever negged the comment didn't get it - it's listed in the ad description ….

"NOTE: The stock is available around mid to end of Octorber. Please order it online to secure stock first! Thanks!"

  • +3

Apparently this only works with the official power supply. Don’t forget to add that to your order

    • +4

New power is +60% wattage, getting very close to Thinkcentre tiny.

    • +2

I don't think the seller stocks the ones for pi 5 - the seller stocks the "Raspberry Pi Official Black AU Plug AC Adapter" but it's for the pi 4.

    • +2

It will work with a standard power adapter, but the USB ports will only get minimal power.

  • +21

for all the retro gaming enthusiasts - the Pi 5 can handle PS2 IF you use AetherSX under android. Gamecube and Wii will run some games at native 720p under linux. If you're wanting to upgrade your emulation box and think the Pi 5 will open lots of new consoles well it's a disappointment. Go for a mini PC using intel n100 chipset instead, if you look around you'll find one with 8GB (possibly even 16GB RAM) and a 256GB or 512GB SSD for around $200-250 AUD (amazon). That s a fair more capable small device for emulation until Wii U, Switch and 2D PS3 games.

    • Any opinion on upgrading a minecraft server from the pi4 to pi5?
Or if anyone else has upgraded another game server to the pi5

      • +2

The real problem with running game servers on an rpi is the lack of aarch64 server binaries to begin with.

That said, I've had limited success with running the Factorio server under box64 on aarch64 hardware. (Although it was an Ampere Altra server as opposed to an Raspberry Pi…)

    • I upgraded my TV, the new one doesn't have the component input for our Wii anymore. I have a ThinkPad with an Intel gen 7 chip. Can I use that for emulating Wii?
      Thanks.

      • +5

You can get an HDMI adapter for the Wii for $11 on Amazon. I have one and it works just fine. Cheers

        • +2

Far better to do this than try using emulation with non-wii controllers.

The Wii''s unique controllers make it quite a hard console to emulate with a standard gamepad, if the motion capabilities are utilised.

          • +1

@b-radicool: I recently beat Web of Shadows for Wii via emulation on Xbox and any time a new gesture was brought in for a quick time cutscene I'd have to pause the game and map it to some arbitrary button combination so as to not interfere with the normal controls I had setup. Quite tedious.

Definitely if you're still using a Wii in 2023, just buy the HDMI adapter, outside of Classic Controller supported games, I wouldn't emulate Wii unless I absolutely had to.

          • @b-radicool: I have the classic controllers for SNES/PS games, and the WiiMote for Wii games, like Mario Karts.
So there are no simple solution for emulating WiiMotes?

            • @Averell: you can emulate the wiimotes but you don't get the motion controls without (in my opinion) a lot of faffing around. Using a real Wiimote is possible with the dolphin emulator - it's easier under windows than it is with *nix (you need to blacklist the bluetooth ID of the wiimotes to the O/S, but then whitelist them in dolphin with the specific bluetooth controller - only some BT controllers allow passthrough and it seems easier to have two BT receivers in a system if you want to use wiimotes as well as say xbox/ps controllers as well).

The best Wii emulator is still an actual Wii console (modded, of course), but it is a joy playing say Mario Galaxy upscaled on a 4K screen - the graphics are just so, so pretty.

              • @gizmomelb: Thanks.
I have 4 WiiMotes :-) and I meant connecting those to the emulators. I tried it on MacOs but couldn't connect. Let me try Windows.

"Upscaled Mario Galaxy" <<< did you mean using emulators on Windows? Is that also using Dolphin?

                • +1

@Averell: upscaled Wii games - I mean using Dolphin on either windows or linux (I use the all in one 'Batocera' front end which has the emulators etc. pre-configured.. you just drop in your roms or ISO images etc. (and yes it supports various compressed formats, I think I re-converted all my Wii images to .RVZ format and from memory I think the entire NTSC catalogue is about 2TB - will need to check).

Whether linux or windows, dolphin supports upscaling to various resolutions as well as HD art pack replacements - an example is this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZNaEYrKD78

                  • @gizmomelb: May I ask how you are playing Wii games? Are you using real Wiimotes?
After a week of searching and trying, I'm still not able to connect the Wiimotes to any of my laptops (Windows or MacM1).
                    Thanks

                  • @gizmomelb: Thanks to you and other OzBargainers, I could now run MarioKart on my 4K screen. The image quality is much better than on the real Wii console.

Do you know any NES/SNES/PS1 emulators that supports that upscaling feature?

                    Thanks a lot.

          • +1

            @b-radicool:

than try using emulation with non-wii controllers.

The Dolphin emulator supports using real Wii controllers.

            • +1

@PainToad: I have 3 wiimotes lying around, but couldn't connect them to either my Mac (M1) or Windows laptop :( it keeps asking for a PIN when pairing

Intel N100 boxes are great. There's a few quirks with the Bluetooth and WiFi chipset under Linux, so it's worth pointing that out.

I run my Beelink S12 Pro with LibreELEC and it's a fantastic little box which consumes something like 1W when sleeping and up to 8W when idle. It's an impressive little thing considering it's only got a 6W TDP CPU which has the single core performance of a Skylake CPU.

      • there were initial issues with support for the Wifi 6/BT 5.2 cards (umm AX101 chipset from memory) but support seems to have settled down with linux kernel 6.3 and above having firmware etc. ''built in'' to support this chipset. What version of Libreelec are you using - 11 or 12 (nightly)?

I've got a CHUWI Larkbox x 2023 (but I keep wanting to buy another box to dedicate as a HTPC / emulation front end) with the wifi 6/bt 5.2 m2 module - so I'll download the most recent libreelec and give it a test (mostly I use my n100 currently as a usenet/torrent downloader - because of it's power efficiency) and for testing Batocera updates.

        • I'm using LE11.

I tried out Debian with kernel 6.5 loaded and Ubuntu with HWE option, but Bluetooth didn't work in those either. I only really tested out both to see if I wanted to use Plex HTPC instead (via flatpak) and also to see if the WiFi/BT chipset worked fine, but at that point I had already configured LE11 how I wanted, so I didn't proceed further.

Having an easy-to-use backup/restore option in LibreELEC is so handy!

          • @skittlebrau: ok I just tried the 11.04 (or whatever it is) stable version and there was no wifi or BT support for the AX101 module I have in my mini PC, so then I tried the version 12 nightly (31-12-2023) and wifi and BT worked fine.

            • @gizmomelb: Good to know! I don't need WiFi since mine's hooked up with ethernet, but having bluetooth built-in without needing to use a USB dongle will be useful. Thanks for reporting back.

    • ooh wii emulation, i ripped lots of games when video libraries existed, would love to bring them back to life.

  • Shame not work with old cases.

  • pi 5 doesn't suck absolute d like pi 4 did?

    • +10

      pi5 sucks.

Should have done better research before I ordered. Very little runs on it, not retropie, not home assistant. Hardware is different enough they need to create new builds specific for the pi5 so for me the pi5 will be sitting on the shelf now until that happens.

it also runs burning hot!!, absolutely needs cooling at stock temps.

Also what a joke there isn't a proper power supply out yet. Using the underpowered Pi4 power supply isn't a great answer long term.

Any thoughts on what is the best N100 out there with a dual nic?I am wondering if I could use an N100 to do both high performance vpn and run home assistant.

      • +9

Intel N100 mini PCs are giving Pi 5 a hard time.

Beta version of HA OS for Pi 5 was released 1 hour ago. If you want to try it out:

flash the image at https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/releases/… using your favorite flasher such as balenaEtcher onto an SD card and run Home Assistant OS on your Raspberry Pi 5

Proper power supply for US and EU plugs are available, but for the AU plug.. not sure whether they are out of stock everywhere or need to wait till Feb 2024 (and the design is still like the Pi 4 one, the plug often takes up a bit more than 1 socket which is a bit annoying). However, once again, Pi foundation is @#!@#@! in PD support. It's once again doing the lazy 5V only support despite the official power supply supports 9V (and if 9V is properly supported, then lots of USB-C chargers will work).

My minor gripe on N95 and N100 is the m.2/PCIe gen 3 slot is x1 only for most of the mini PCs (not sure why they don't wire x4). However, Pi 5 will need another add-on board in order to even support that so it's even worse.

The $100 N95/16Gb I got from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/813244 had a x4 slot for NVMe.
The supplied 512Gb M2 was sata so I replaced it with a Samsung 1Tb from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/787674
It retired my RasPi from TV/retro games to firewall duty on a sub net - from video star to guard duty..

          • @iratepirate: What did you use your Kamrui for? I also got one and I am undecided yet what to do with it. The $99 price was insane.

          • @iratepirate: That N95 deal is a true bargain. It's great some OZBers managed to get it (really wish I managed to get one, but that deal sold out quite quickly).

I know you previously indicated that mini PC reported 1800MB/s with a NVMe SSD, any chance to try with a flagship class NVMe? Hoping to see around 3500MB/s. Guessing you recently switched to 980 Pro and it is now close to 3500MB/s.

            • @netsurfer: Yes went from a older PNY brand to the Samsung and it is about 3080MB/s now.

          • +1

@iratepirate: What firewall software are you using for the raspberry if you don't mind? I'm running just pihole for DNS but would like firewalling too

        • is N100 much different to N95?
          and what is price difference?

Is it recommended to get the N100 over the pi5 nowadays?

          • @pinkybrain: N100 uses 6 Watts vs 15Watts of the N95 but is slightly slower.

            • @iratepirate: which one is slightly slower?

most of the N100 seems to be expensive currently
the $100 N95 seems like a good deal when it was available.

              • @pinkybrain: N100's CPU is slightly slower (except some of the N95 Mini PCs have BIOS default that lowers N95's TDP so you need to go to the BIOS to change it). N100's GPU is slightly faster.

Honestly, the difference isn't big enough to justify the N100's price. That $100 N95 deal was awesome and a no brainer. Even with the discounted Pi 5, still need to factor in a power supply and a case. App support for Pi 5 is still work in progress.

                • @netsurfer: @netsurfer - depends what you want to use it for - the N100 iGPU is around twice as fast as the N95 iGPU, so if you're using it for an emulation / low end games box then for around $200-250 - which is about the same NORMAL price as an N95 chipset box (yes we know the n95 was $99 on special - once and only once as a clearout) the N100 is the clearer winner imo.

              • @pinkybrain: @pinkybrain for $100 the N95 was exceptional value (and a price error I think, they were on sale overseas for $99 USD - so a pricing mistake for local market imo). but the N95 is usually around the same price as the N100 - $200-250 or so on amazon.au

      • +3

I had exactly these issues when I got the Pi4, it was going to be my HTPC kinda and it just basically had no support across a variety of things for the first year. The new fancy GPU which was going to be so great only had drivers for latest microsecond of linux or something, so any other builds of software were 6 to 12 months behind.

I still don't know if Kodi on the Pi4 is utilising the hardware properly.

Luckily I had access to a spare USB-C high end charger which was handy, but yeah between the cost of the unit, the Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter, a decent case for it, a MicroSD the overall cost blew out to "hey you can buy intel alternatives near this price" kind of thing

Oh and yeah, heat is too high on the 4, let alone the 5.

Also, while I agree with you almost entirely, I feel like buying a Pi5 just for HA is kind of nuts, it needs barely anything at all as far as I know and you could use a cheaper, cooler model.

        • +2

Yup, I have HA happily running on a 3B+

          • @Jonzay: Do you only have anything else or just HA running on it? I’m thinking about a new IOTstack deployment.

            • @BobcatJones: That particular Pi is only running HA (with a whole bunch of addons, node-red flows and HACS custom integrations). I have other Pis performing other tasks.

            • +1

@BobcatJones: Most people running HA on a Pi run HAOS, which precludes running anything else on it that isn't a HA integration. Running HA containerised requires setting up all the third-party integrations as separate containers, which is not a particularly user friendly experience, though going down that rabbit hole myself on a refurbished Optiplex micro was a worthwhile learning experience to get familiar with Docker

        • what intel alternatives do you suggest?

          can you provide some links?

        • does the N100 support bluetooth and hdmi-cec for kodi / libreELEC etc?

          • @pinkybrain: "does the N100 support bluetooth and hdmi-cec for kodi / libreELEC etc?"

I've never actually tried! Will give it a go.

        • Saying HA needs barely anything is like saying all cars only need a 1.2L 4 cylinder engine. Sure, yours may only require that but that's only your experience and definitely not the standard.

          • +1

@Tacooo: C'mon man it's home assistant, not a docker server, file server, media player or emulator

            • @hamwhisperer: Right. Guess all those idiots running Bookstack, Frigate, AdGuardHome, BrowserMod, InfluxDB and others don't know what they're doing.

              • +1

@Tacooo: At least 2 if not 3 of those, do not need to be run locally under HomeAssistant, it makes no sense in doing so.

                • @hamwhisperer: Makes perfect sense if you run HassOS which over 2/3 of users do.

                  • +1

@Tacooo: I ran HassOS, I see little value in running these kind of services 'off the back' of my HomeAssistant computer. Run them on your real server.

                    • @hamwhisperer:

                      1. The value is in the easy integration and lack of configuration requirement.
                      2. Not everyone owns a server. In fact most people don't.
              • +2

@Tacooo: Who on earth is going to rely on their HA to run adblocking software?

                I mean, you… could, but just… why?

Would have thought that most people doing this kinda stuff at home would have enough hardware around to segregate functions in a sensible way. Mine runs on my firewall, and if it didn't it'd run as a discrete instance dedicated to security functions.

This is kinda like people who think that it's a great idea to run a firewall on a device with a single ethernet port, then jury-right some half arsed fix like a USB to ethernet dongle. You can do it, but… it's a bit of a suboptimal design choice.

  • Nice deal. Wish it is easy to find the 27w power supply.

    8GB sold out

    Great price for 4gb.

  • If you are with Citibank, check your rewards page for a $10 cashback on $100 spending offer at my deal.

    • does Citibank reward cashback also work with the cashback sites too?

      • I don’t see why not, unless it’s a westpac cashback thing.

  • Shows up as $78.23 for me…

  • Are you adding the BOXING code? This can be added at check out.

  • +1

Wow, still rocking my pi3b with no problems at all, was thinking of upgrading but some peeps pointed out the issues that will blow the budget.

Maybe an alternative might be in order or just stick with the 3b

  • God damn it. Bought the Pi5 a few weeks ago from PBTech for $100. Oh well.

    • Yeah I paid $103 from Pi Australia a couple of weeks ago. Haven't even opened it yet lol

This seems too cheap, I wonder if it's legit

    • The dude behind the Pi project was on record earlier this year saying that they'd finally started to overcome the covid-induced parts shortages, so they were going to get their production ramped up and prices would start going sane again.

      • and so prices should come down, considering pre covid pricing on PIs, RAM is cheap and foundries seem to be making lots of SOCs again, and they still can’t get USB-C power right.

  • Nice.. also had a $10 off $100 spend on both my 28 Degrees and my Westpac credit cards, plus Cashrewards is up to 18%

    • 4% electronics

      • Ah that explains why CB tracked less than expected.. least the other stuff I needed to hit the $100 threshold was at 18%

  • Why so cheap? Is the seller legit?

I thought stock of these was scarce and it's even hard to find at RRP

    • what is the RRP?

    • Definitely are, mine came today. Was shipped internationally which explains them being in stock

  • Put one in my cart with 9 available and it got removed seconds later saying OOS lol

I only wanted to grab a screenshot for price protection, so all good :D

    • What price protection are you using? Is it from a store or a card?

  • how much better is this over the pi 4? can it run retropi better now? with n64 games?

  • also this is sold out might want to mark it as sold out.

  • Wow, up to $121.91 for the 4GB now :-P

    • +1

Yeah can confirm the deal was genuine and GL for those who got it.

Just received my 8GB yesterday btw.
