Are there serviceable or just $10 eventual landfill?

  • +4

Hmm solar powered but only splash proof.

    • Surely the panel part is wp, if not could just seal it with silicone I guess.

The light part prob just at ip54

    • Yes, "splash proof" not stated in JB description. But stated on box.

  • How many bulbs on the festoon light?

    • +2

      About 50 bulbs

    • From the look of them they appear to be mini festoon lights, which don't have anywhere near the presence of a full size festoon bulb.

Anyone else find $10 JB code is slow to be delivered. Boost number set up account fine - an hour ago.

    • Was almost instant when signed up with different email & Boost number on 28/12 for $10 Samsung 64GB Card.
      Still nothing after 2hr.

Luckily found a $10 birthday code expiring 2/1!
Placed order at local JB for RGB Festoon Light
      Ready to collect!

    • +1

Signed up with 2 numbers at around 11 today, both codes have only just arrived now so there's definitely some delay. It's usually instant for me.

      • I don't know how to get free Boost Sims. If you have a moment, can you teach me? Thank you.

        • Search Boost on Ozbargain to find the regular & profitable Deals!

      • Same - took 3hr to arrive
        Luckily local JB wasn't Ozbargained.

these will go great with the hot dog maker…in landfill

  • The original ticket price for the festoon lights was $40, can see it underneath the sale ticket.

  • Now I’ve finally learned why people order multiple free boost sims lol

Gee these birthdays come around pretty often. Got another festoon light, already got another one yesterday. They work really well.

    • +1

      Didn't even know I had a birthday last month😉
      But JB remembered with $10🎂
RGB Festoon Light ready to collect🎉

  • If these festoon lights are not water proof, what is the use case? Where are people installing them?

    • +2

Install it under an eave. The solar panel doesn't need that much light. I unboxed mine yesterday and only had about 1 hour of evening light, and the lights were still going at 12am.

      • "Novelty" Lights should have a longer life out of weather & sunlight.
Panel will probably only last a year - often clear plastic over solar panel loses its transparency, lowering charging.

For years, have run leads from small solar panels outside to (motion detector white) lights inside front entrance, ensuite, kitchen. May need to extend lead. Have some fun!

Anyone know how to convert these to usb to use a powerbank as power source

    • Found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb3LvEyO2Jc

let us know if you did manage to make it usb powered.

      • cut one of the usb cable, red to bottom right, next on top left and it works with powerbank.
cant use high power usb adaptor obviously.
and used hot glue gun i bought other day.

        follow at own risk

      • The Rope Light is a suitable candidate for that conversion.
It uses 3 x AA batteries, which could be easily replaced by a cable with USB plug supplying 5V.

      • Don't do it with the RGB Festoon Light!
That simple solution won't work with those.

As the solar panel also has the controls & circuitry for the lights (on/off, colour mode), disconnecting the panel & adding a 5V USB power supply to the cable would likely wreck the lights!!

The cable likely sends a multiplexed signal to the lights to set the colours & patterns. Supplying USB 5V will likely destroy the lights.

That solution is mainly useful in simple single colour lights.
I've done that with Aldi "Shed Lights" which have a separate solar panel connected by cable to motion sensor light. Controls for the light were on the light.

Much simpler as those were charged with a panel with about 5V output. So was simple to disconnect the solar panel & add a USB plug to power from a USB power source.
        Been in use for years.

        However…
This unit is powered by a 1.2V 600mAh battery. The panel charges it at 2V 160mA max. 3 W Light. (Shown on rear of panel)

Adding a different power source requires opening the panel (screws on back).
        Then (using a soldering iron)…
        Disconnect the solar panel output.
Add a suitable DC-DC circuit to drop the 5V USB supply to 2V, where the solar panel output was previously connected.
Or remove the 1.2V battery & add a DC-DC circuit to drop the USB voltage to 1.2V required.
(That will require a multimeter to adjust the voltage.)

While I have modified many 1.5-3V circuits to operate on USB supply using DC-DC buck converter circuits available online for about $1.50…

Hardly worth the time & effort in this case!

  • I wonder if it is possible to use multiple $10 welcome codes on same order?

    • you can only use one code per order.

  • Picked up mine today. Still a pile of these $10 boxes near front entrance.
Also $10 neon lights of different shapes & colours (eg pink flamingo).
Bought a $10 talking, dancing duck!

  • Unravelling the long cable, bulbs, & panel of the RGB Festoon Light took a frustrating 15 min!

Don't forget to remove the plastic film on the solar panel. It will reduce efficiency over time.
