Xiaomi 7000 Wi-Fi Router 2.5G WAN/LAN US$140.73 / A$217.77 Shipped @ Factory Direct Collected Store AliExpress

670

Has good reviews, and seems to be the chinese version with stronger wifi.
The big plus for me is the 2.5g WAN and 4 x 2.5g ethernet that only comes with much more expensive routers

My new motherboard has a 2.5g port and hopefully the fixed wireless nbn promises of 250 future speeds are real. Also my home built NAS can be upgraded to 2.5g, so can use some for the SSD speeds.

Yes there are concerns about Xiaomi and data security, but with my kids watching 1000s of hours of tictoc and other misc dodgy apps I'm not too worried about extra data sniffing.

Has Openwrt firmware potential in future but could be years away, so dont buy this expecting custom firmware just yet.
I havnt got mine yet but appears to have a phone based app interface to change settings.

This seller does not offer a AU power plug(comes with eu ), so also get a basic travel adaptor.

Specs(c&p):
Built on the Qualcomm Networking Pro 820 platform
Quad-core A73 1.5GHz processor with up to 28800 DMIPS
4 x 2.5G ports and 1 USB 3.0 port.
Supports quad-band and 8-way data stream connections
A peak transmission bandwidth of 13.7 GB/s is supported, along with Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 4, and 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequencies.

My friend and I ordered 2 of these from China when it was originally launched back in Jan 2021. It cost us about $140 each. The firmware was all Chinese so there was slight struggle initially to set it up but Google Translate did the trick. Once setup it was rock solid, never missed a beat and had an excellent wifi performance. The build quality is pretty good as well.

There is also an app of MiWiFi app that is a ported version and translated to English, that makes the setup super easy, however be careful because there might possibly be a few dodgy apks floating around.

    • +6

You are probably referring to AX6000 ones. This one is a new release in May 2023

      • +1

Oops, yes you're right. It was AX6000.

    • I think you are talking about the ax6000 version

    • +6

About $80 usd for the ax6000 at current. Absolute bargain.

Have had it for a few years now and about 70 devices connected.

      • +3

Sometimes the ax3600 is even cheaper.

Have used both the ax3600 and ax6000 (Chinese versions). Found no difference

        p.s the 6k has a 2.5 port.

        • +2

i've been using the ax3600 for years now and it's been great, i have gigabit internet and my connection is strong anywhere in the house
really great for how cheap it was

          • @s1Lence: I drive 100m down the road and still have a connection on my head unit.

            Crazy stuff.

          • @s1Lence: I tried the Xiaomi AX3600 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/611776 from that pcbyte deal and my wifi speeds were terrible - the chinese firmware did have somewhat better wifi but somehow on the Asus RT-AC68U and the Xiaomi AX3600 I wasn't able to max out wi-fi on this 10yr old desktop (some cruddy tplink 300mbps wifi card 4670k/1080ti build)

Anyway the Asus RT-AC68u failed on me - the wi-fi seems to shutdown after a few hours, I then tried the ax3600 and the wifi was slower/iffy to the desktop

…Finally I switched to some of those semi-cheapo tri-band Asus Lyra Voice that were off amazon AU cos i wanted the mesh/built-in alexa, which seems to work perfectly now (as in I seem to be able to hit 20MB/s simply downloading off wifi now which I had no way of getting prior), and threw one more in a room to get coverage at the end of the house

            • @loke: Were your wireless speeds slow only to the desktop or to all devices? I use a wired connection on my PC so I can't comment on that, but my phone gets 938mbps/48mbps on a 1000/50 connection which is the exact same speeds as my PC.

              • @s1Lence: I'll get another desktop setup with WIFI 6 and see how it fares then,

Which phone is this? and would it be using WIFI 6 in close proximity or just WIFI 5/ac connection?

      • Can couch for it. I am on a 1000/1000 plan and it's been working like a charm from the past few years.

Great for local media streaming as well for my place server.

    • did you get an AU plug?

      • No but nothing that a cheapo adapter can't fix.

        • these are way cheaper on Ali, especially in bulk due to shipping

        • About $6 at Kmart

        • for that sort of price you might as well buy a new power adapter with AU pins

          • @c64: Yeah I know, I didn't wanna link to 50cent adapters that I use because didn't wanna get into 'burn down your house' discussion.

  • +1

Is it possible to mesh this one for extra coverage?

    • +1

I bought two entry level xiaomi routers and they have mesh support

    • +1

I got mine this week. I have it meshed with my ax3600 (global firmware) perfectly.

The wifi range and speed is amazing on this thing.

It has Chinese firmware. (Browser can translate) which enabled the stronger wifi bands/settings.

I had to ditch the miwifi app as it is not supported when this is the main mesh router. It you can use the Mi Home app instead.

Will try figure out something with a pi. To stop it calling home

Inb4 someone asks about CCP spy software

    • +8

oh no! now the CCP are going to see all my FB comments on funny cat videos and use it against me

      • +7

You laugh, but remember when the Republican politicians were tweeting about CCP running male milking farms?

Turns out they were RIGHT!!! One look at my internet history and they'll know I'm DTM!

    • +10

Mine came with a camera, what's it for?

      • Built in stream cam.

      • +6

Could be worse, found one on my Xiaomi bidet!

    • i do because I want to yell at them to cast Yang Xi Zi in more dramas

      • Not yang zi?

        • Shes cute and quite skilled but she gets enough roles. I want the newcomers to have a go!

    • To be honest I think Xiaomi's firmware team might be a tad too incompetent to write a decent backdoor, but at least they leave the capability for anyone with proper permissions on their mqtt server to do so, right?

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/215764/109608/xiaomipl…

      • whered you find the fw dumps? wouldn't mind taking a look too ;)

        • +2

I download the firmware from the Xiaomi website and extract using a combination of ubireader_extract_image and binwalk?

Not sure it's that interesting, just a big mess of the qualcomm image plus all the Xiaomi binaries and scripts. (They also obfuscate all the lua scripts that hold the web interface together. I don't think anyone wants to steal your terrible ui guys)

They already have quite a few eyes on this as they run a H1 program for bounty, so most of the obvious screwups get patched, eventually…

  • +1

Is it actual 6ghz frequency or 5.8ghz frequency as I've seen on some?

    • +2

5.8Ghz it appears. So no wifi 6e - wifi 6 only.

      • +1

Yeah can't seem to see 6E frequencies. One of the blogs say it has the 7bhardware and once it's officially approved it will be unlocked via a software update.

  • +15

Yeah, passing on this until the firmware can be flashed with WRT to eliminate all potential spyware.

    • -2

All this spyware / security issues is just a smoke screen so China doesn’t become a technology giant. But it’s too late.

      • 100%

      • +9

They have been outed by multiple governments as being responsible for continual, agressive theft of intellectual property on an unprecedented level.

But sure. It's a smoke screen you say.

  • +2

can i trust this thing? still being haunted by the previous xiaomi ax9000 router deal

    • +1

My ax9000 is still going super strong :)

      • +2

i guess you don't need very huge coverage? if you follow the discussion of this deal a while back, quite a few (including me) suffered from its weak signal.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/759033

        • I was in a large, two story share house before. It didn't matter where I placed the router, every part of the house and even the yard had excellent signal.

        • I don't see how you could not have good coverage with the antennas on the ax9000. As someone on your linked discussion said, they still had signal 500m down the street.

          • @RickyJ: After being very impressed by the ax3000 I decided to get the ax9000 from pcbyte when it was on sale.

On my 1000 mbps connection I couldn't even touch 500mbps on my devices. I think the AU firmware really limits the power on it. Had to sell it for half price on FB marketplace. Bought ax6000's instead.

    • My bad! 😭

  • +37

Thanks I am an IT contractor, needed to install some routers in the Parliament house.

    • +2

Triple the price and install them in ASIO HQ ;-)

      • +2

ASIO networking was prob done by Bobs Plumbing, Pine Gap, Alice springs.

        • I love Bobs

      • -1

No 5G here only 2.5G so it's fine.

  • Nice bit of kit!

      Steamed hams?

      • Ham and roast beef

      • Only the biggest and brownest steamed ham from me.

  • +1

Ive not heard of 2.5g, and the product has no description. I just want to comfirm, is this meant to be 2.5gbit/s ethernet connection? My initial reaction was 2.4ghz wifi which i was shocked was even getting a mention.

    • +4

Yes, 2.5gbit Ethernet. Pretty standard on a lot of Motherboards and Switches these days.

      • All 4 ports are 2.5

  • +16

I’m not yet at the Chinese router stage of giving up.

    • +1

Are you saying you were able to put openwrt on the Xiaomi AX6000 as it's not on the supported list

      • +1

Yes, but re-reading my comment I grossly misspoke, sharing thoughts too quickly.

You are absolutely correct It's not supported, it took a LOT of custom compiled drivers and messing with the XiaomiFirmwarePatcher.
Bricked about 3 of them getting there.

I should have said "Previous version of this ran OpenWRT well" not "was supported"; the OpenWRT project does NOT support it, you're 110% correct.

        • +1

          Thanks for clearing that up

          That sounds like some dedication

  • Does anyone share the same experience on Aliexpress? I put a Xiaomi mobile phone in the cart for a few minutes and when I tried to check out, the price increased by 10%.

    • +3

tax gets charged on top of purchase price

      • +1

Nah, it is not the tax. I checked the details. It is the mobile phone price excluding GST. Before putting it in the car, it is around 160. Then it jumped to 176. The GST increased as well.

    • +4

If you were shipping to Australia, that's GST.
It's a flat 10% tax applied to all goods entering the country.

It's frustrating… and the fact it's now applied to small purchases too, is one of the main reasons many people have genuine hatred toward Gerry Harvey.

      • +1

AliExpress is generally OK. However they always miscalculate GST, so you'll end up paying around 15% GST.

Poor ol' Gerry Harvey is battling according to news.com.au:

"Gerry Harvey says Australia needs a two-tier wage system to allow employers to pay foreign guest workers less than locals.

"Australia doesn't have cheap labour. Many overseas workers would be prepared to move here for a much better life and half the money Australians earn," he said.

"I've got horse studs and it's difficult to get staff."

      • It is not the GST, just the mobile price excluding the GST.

        • It might have had a 'welcome' deal on it, which only applies to the first item ever purchased on that account.

    • I’ve ordered a bunch of stuff of aliexpress, but ended up getting a pile of burritos. I’m not sure what to think maybe I need to open a burrito shop

  • +9

Feels it’s overkill for our NBN…

    Actually most router are overkill…

We are literally 3rd world internet

    • +5

3rd world is actually overtaking Australia.
I was in a 3rd world country's village a couple of months ago and had a 100/100 Mbps connection.

The 4G in that 3rd world country also had a much higher upload speed unlike the measly 2 or 3 mbps that we are deliberately restricted to.

The gap between the 3rd world and Australia has narrowed quite a bit in many respects not only tech.

About all Australia has going for it now is lower population and clean air and water.

      • +2

Who are you with, that restricts you to 2-3 Mbps? I'm constantly getting 80-150 up on 4G/5G.

Seems to be mostly on the individual providers when it comes to restricting speeds on NBN and cellular, not the infrastructure.

        • +1

Right now I am with More Telecom on the $65 plan which is free for 3 months. So thats Telstra network on a not so cheap plan.

Tried another mobile on optus just now.

          38.7/2.99 Mbps

I dont mean a particular speed.
What I mean is upload speeds are deliberately capped here.

And dont even talk about NBN Tiers!!
          100/20 and 100/40 .

          250/25 ?? WTF?

          • +1

@techno2000: 1000/1000 is available in most metro areas if you're willing to pay. Most aren't so 1000/50 it is

          • @techno2000: Are you mixing up megabits and megabytes?

          • +1

@techno2000: More still only get a fraction of the network so you're only going to get a fraction of the upload.

Uploads are by design given less capacity on mobile towers, due to most people requiring faster download than upload.

Voice calling is roughly 100kbps per line, so you don't need 100Mbps up.

Same things for consumer NBN. Most home users don't need 100Mbps upload. It's better to give them more Download for streaming etc.
If you do need more upload, you are more prosumer or professional, which is where the 500/200 or 1000/400 plans kick in.

Once again, its not the infrastructure that is restricting it these days. Its price points and usage data that determines offered speeds.

I was in the USA (Kansas City) a few months ago, 5G speeds on Google Fi were overall slower than Telstra here in Perth, despite great signal strength. Google Fiber was at the Air BNB, which starts at 1Gbps/1Gbps. Fantastic capacity for my use, but 95% of users don't use all of whats available.

Not defending the shocking mix tech NBN of the mid 2010s, but the FTTP network we have now is world class.

          • +1

            @techno2000:

More Telecom on the $65 plan which is free for 3 months. So thats Telstra network on a not so cheap plan.

            Common misconception.
Thats the Telstra MVNO Network, not the Telstra Network.

Only 2 providers have access to the Telstra Network: Telstra, and Boost.
The MVNO network is massively overloaded by cheaper resellers, and 'working' is all Telstra promises to them wholesale (as you're discovering).
If you moved to the actual Telstra Network, you'd have a better experience.

            • @MasterScythe: l am getting more than 100 mbps download speeds.I am talking about upload speeds and specifically about 4G.

5G is giving better upload speeds but only 300/6 Mbps.

      • Thats one hell of a restriction.
Until last month I had 2x 100/40 plans bonded, and manage 200/80 quite reliably. I decied I didnt need the bill anymore and went back to 100/40.

Where on earth are you limited to 2-3Mbps?

    • I actually migrated here from 3rd world country in 2017, at the time average consumer internet was about 5mbps there , when I got one here I was surprised to see ADSL+. Fast forward 7 years. Average internet speed is 50mbps at 1/3 of the price compared to Australia. You get 1000/500 for the price of about 70AUD a month.

  • Ax6000 is one half price does this one overkill our Internet?2×ax6000 isn't a better option?

    • Depends on your needs.

Also increases your local bandwidth for data transfer

  • Firmware / language in Chinese?

    • Yes, but very easy to navigate. I have been using the AX6000

  • I don’t care about Winnie the Pooh looking at my Facebook feed but I do care about him looking snooping at my online banking.

    • Don't worry the Zuckster has your back.

    • They can't snoop online banking, your banking site should be encrypted with HTTPS. Worst case scenario they see what sites you visit (but not what you do on them), what devices on your network are saying to each other, or once in a blue moon when you do visit a HTTP site, what you do on that site.
