Holding out for 75" C845 price reduction. Must be coming soon. Surely.

    • Can try in June i think

      • Can't wait that long. Mrs is giving me shit already for delaying this purchase.

        • +18

Meanwhile my Mrs not allowing me to upgrade from the Sony LCD since 2010

          Not much I can do.

However I have all the connections i need under RCA, Component, HDMI.

None of the new TVs would have any of those any more except HDMI. All my old gear would not work

          • +2

@neonlight: I'll be upgrading from a Panasonic Plasma. Our TV purchases are so infrequent that I'm very careful to get this purchase right.

            • +3

@Pete Gabitas: Yeah if you want a TV that lasts TCL might not be the brand but for the price its ok.

              • +6

@neonlight: Yeah, realistically none of the modern TV's will last at long as a Panasonic Plasma.

                • +2

@Pete Gabitas: Agree. I also would think none would last longer than my Sony Bravia as well

                  • @neonlight: Sony don't even make their own panels.

                • @Pete Gabitas: Yeh I don't think TVs these days will last as long.
I purchased a Panasonic Plasma for the inLaws back in 2009. Only now there is a noticeable dim blotching patch from 1 corner.

I'm still on a LG Plasma from around the same time

                • @Pete Gabitas: I doubt that. I worked selling plasmas, a lot of which were Panasonic, back when they were the go and they were not particularly reliable. The fact they get hot would often cook the caps (dry out the electrolytic ones and they would pop or just fail) killing the powersupply and often the main board with it. Modern LEDs are so much more efficient and thus use so much less power you will be fine plus new switch mode power supplies are much better.

Obviously, shit TV's are still shit but the good ones are now better in terms of reliability.

                  • +2

@Dsiee: My 60 inch Pioneer Kuro is still working perfectly fine 17 years later and has over 85,000 hours on it. Never had a single issue with it.

                    • +3

@jimbler: Well obviously not every single one dies earlier. Survivorship bias is strong here.

                  • @Dsiee: I beg to differ. Our 2009 Panasonic 54“ is still running strong. No blotch or anything. Just a bit of burning in.

                  • @Dsiee: My 2008 Panasonic Plasma is still going strong at my parents. Meanwhile my 2017 Samsung LCD looks patchy AF with dark spots.

                • +1

@Pete Gabitas: Yep, 2008 Panasonic plasma going strong at my place in its 16th year. Can control it from my phone using a Broadcom Wifi-to-IR device. Relatively power-hungry, but otherwise an epic device with great picture and sound.

              • +1

@neonlight: Why not TCL? They manufacture a lot of LCD’s for the big brands and they all run on the same software

                • @cille745: I consider it as cheap alternative but no way I would not think it will last for a decade in comparison

                  • -1

@neonlight: My Panasonic failed within 3 years, all the diffusers dropped.
That's 7 years less than your decade and a TV with only 1 year warranty.
I was smart enough to get aftermarket warranty which netted me back my full purchase $ to put forward to another better TV.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Maybe the same problem I had with the LG, a lot of TVs had a part that was known to go faulty. Extended warranty not required, Australian Consumer Law to the rescue; although I wouldn't expect a cash refund though.

              • -1

@neonlight: You just make stuff up?

            • @Pete Gabitas: Get a Sony then

            • +1

@Pete Gabitas: I'm looking as my Panasonic Plasma from 2013 just got the 7 red flashes of death this weekend.

              • +1

@Alexxx: haha, i also purchased Panasonic plasma back in 2013, and a month ago started having 7 red flashes issue.
They say it could be faulty SC board, which would be around $250 to get a new one.
Now wondering whether to fix it or get a new one.

              • @Alexxx: You need to read this then !

                https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1353860

                Thread I started in 2010

Unless of course you don’t want it to get better !

              • +1

@Alexxx: Got the C845 75" for just under $1700 on ebay just now - factorydirect-au
Only a couple left so won't post the deal.

                • @Pete Gabitas: is it the refurbished one where it says it was used as display during Melbourne Cup for 1 day?

                  • @aveeno: No, no mention of that. The box was a bit damaged so I presume it was the reason for the price.

          • @neonlight: same here, I have a Sony 32EX650 early IPS smart TV, works really well with old connections. SNES on Composite and OG XBOX on Component :)

Couldn't find a cheap and worthwhile upgrade for that :/

            • @bazingaa: Yeah that’s right Svideo, composite, component and HDMI the Sony had it all I don’t know what to do if this Tv is gone

              • @neonlight: AV receiver box

                • @Kanjus: I have tried Composite to HDMI convertors, but they are not good as the Sony builtin upscaller, unless you use an expensive one of course.

                  • @bazingaa: Converters are all cheap rubbish. You need a full av receiver. Should be plenty knocking around 2nd hand.

                    • @Kanjus: New AV receivers don't have the connections. Finding the proper one second hand, reasonably priced and would actual last would be a challenge

                    • +1

                      @Kanjus:

                      av receiver.

Ah! Now I got it, the good old "ONKYO" stuff :D

          • @neonlight: A 2010 TV is not likely to be very energy efficient; this one is just 4.5 stars and uses 520kWh per year based on 10 hours per day. Perhaps the Sony's power usage is double or more? I replaced a fairly good FHD Samsung years ago for a slightly larger 4K LG one — a simple 10 year cost saving in electricity, assuming no price changes and not considering other opportunity costs… would pay for that TV. It broke at 5 years, but ACL to the win and a bit of a fight, LG did the repair.

Money up front is one thing, but the sooner you pay less for electricity (in real savings), if that gets you over the line, the better.

            • @affinity: Yeah but I don't use my TV much these days plus it has all the connections I need.

I would have to throw away or find other ways to connect my old gear to the new TV. Upfront costs is too high. I don't watch TV much these compare to 14 years ago

            • @affinity:

Sony's power usage is double or more

My Sony's max power usage is 70 W as per specs (https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/televisions-proj…).

So 10 hours per day for an year would be = 7010365/1000 = 255 kWh, but it would be loss less as I don't watch at max brightness/10hours per day :D only downside is it is just a FHD 32" display :/

          • @neonlight: Couple of drops of water in the vents of the old tv might just mean you need a new tv hahh shhhhhh.

          • @neonlight: Just buy this and put a Sony sticker on it and she might not notice.

        • I've never had any TV die..from a 1979 Rank Arena to a Chinese OEM 47" LED in 2006.

Key is to minimise the stress. Keep it away from heat (includes direct sun), moisture and turn down the back light. Out the box the backlights are often way over driven. My Chinese OEM comes out the box chewing 120 watts. But a usable picture can be achieved at just 19w. However, for the room, I settled on a backlight setting around the middle (which chews 49 watts).
          No stress… Happy TVs.

      • No this is not usually the best time to buy. Actually late March early April is the historical low period for a lot of tvs. They have cleared out most of their old stock by start of June ready for all the 2024 models that were recently announced.

    • +4

Got it for $1660 from binglee during black friday (I think) and $130 cashback pending.

With the new models coming out I'm sure it will be lower than that at some point (depending on stock).

      • Fantastic price that.

      • +2

It's the exact TV I'm looking for and can't bring myself to buy after seeing it at that price. Hopefully there's a similar special soon!

        • +1

Don't buy it unless the same or cheaper. Wait it out, new models are already out abroad.

    • +3

Please don't forget to make a post when you find that price. cheers.

      • +1

@TaurusHead - see my comment just above. Under $1700 delivered on ebay (factorydirect-au)

    • +2

      Hodling with you fellow ozbargainer.

    • TCL are a reasonably good brand

  • +18

I wish all TVs had a centre pedestal instead of those silly legs.

    • +1

Yes Centre Pedestal requires less width on the Table

      • 💯

        • +1

I basically skip all TVs without centre pedestal

    • +7

The legs are better when using a soundbar though….

      • Some people have Amps and hifis so we don't need those clumsy legs

    • You can always buy any vesa stand

    • Yeah I had the 75 on a tv stand and then decided to mount it. I think it actually worked better on the tv stand, the middle pedestal is genius!

      • Is it drywall strong enough to hold 75inch TV?

        • +5

Absolutely not, I’d be securing it to studs.

        • +2

Never. It's pretty easy to find studs with a cheap stud finder, and most mounts have spaced out holes for mounting easily.

        • +1

Please don't. Unless you want to find your tv smashed on the floor as it fell after it ripped the drywall mounts.

  • C845 is the newer version of this TV?

    • +1

C845 is mini led and has a very small subwoofer inbuilt.

C745 is still a very good tv, but is the budget line.

      • I have heard power consumption is not so good with mini Led. LG panels on OLED always better but you pay premium for it

        • +3

Power consumption is very similar at the same brightness levels, the bad ratings for MiniLED are only because they are 3-4 times brighter

    • +8

The first number is the series, which usually denotes the technology used ( 7 = LED, 8 = MiniLED etc) the second is the generation eg 735 was last year's version of the 745, and next year will likely be the 755.

  • Code does not seem to work for this item?

    • You should see a 'Take AU $100 off this item' under the estimated delivery dates.

      • I must be blind, nothing like that mentioned for me…

  • "No returns accepted".

That's pretty shonky given they're posting a large & delicate item.

    • +7

No returns meaning you can't change your mind - if it arrives broken you're obviously not stuck with a busted TV

      • Ah righto, I thought they were trying to shirk their ACL obligations.

    • No returns isn't a policy that eBay abides by, you can return anything if you have a reasonable request.
This can fall under diff categories, description, damage, etc etc just not change of mind.
The only time you can have a change of mind return is not to accept delivery.
You do need to have a good reason in change of mind though, ie like price drop elsewhere or something quantifiable.

  • +1

Not super relevant but TCL is doing a press conference today, followed by an exho 9-12 jan. So I assume they are announcing their new line of TVs (which tend to come out closer to mid-year).

Excited to see if there are going to be big improvements or not.

  • +2

    845 is a better TV.
    835 is a better purchase as a 2nd here

I have the 835 next to a CS OLED, both perform really well, but 1 was almost 3 times as much.
835 has some idiosyncrasies but does everything it says it will do, just that you need to understand how to do it, which can be a pita.
I don't think anything can touch the 835 price wise, for everything that comes with it, deff worth shortlisting imo.

    • What does factory second mean in this instance? Looks really good price!

      • Could be a small scratch or dent in the case, just the box messed up while the tv is perfect, a hdmi port is loose but functional, could be that the TV was used for a year already but is otherwise great… without being able to see why it was returned by the store/customer its hard to say what will arrive.

      • They've hidden their TnC on "Factory 2nds" warranty, there is nothing that really states openly whether they're an authorized dealer, what the warranty is on said product ie manufacturers full warranty or what the TV comes with.

This is something to be made aware of.

This warranty is on a “return to base” basis. This means the customer is responsible for bringing certain product back to the place of purchase for service under warranty and for collecting it afterwards. Subject to our operational constraints, we may carry out an in-home service within our normal service hours on air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and TVs.

I paid from memory, $1130 with delivery from JB, they would cover any issues for warranty ie shipment back, comes with full 3 years too. BNIB not 2nd.

I hope this answers everyone's qs.

Meanwhile, I'll try and find the 835 bnib for you

EDIT it appears none exist and that 2nds is a back order which wont exist either.

    • +1

I have the 835 next to a CS OLED, both perform really well, but 1 was almost 3 times as much.

Yeah I looked at the OLED next to 835 in the shop and simply wasn't worth the almost 3x jump in price. The blacks and colour contrast on the 835 are insane for a TV this cheap.

    • Yeah but if that price never gets close to that best ever ($1100 or something?) then it seems pointless.

I'm currently looking to upgrade from a crappy EKO TV from BigW, as the poor eARC and UI is starting to piss me off - not to mention the poor backlight bleed.

      • TCL doesn't suffer from anything like this.

      • EKO would be more comparable with FFalcon models, which is what I understand basically the TCL rebranded budget tv are. Even the P model TCL and the lower tier 6 series C model would be a nice step up over the EKO brand in general.

    • Don't think there's any c835 left to buy anywhere.

  • Can we install apks apps from usb on this tv?

    • Don't see why not. I could on my old TCL.

    • Yes, you can on all Google TVs.

    • What kind of APK does one install? Is it for a streaming service ?

      • Maybe they want to install hacked streaming services apps to avoid ads.

        • I'm curios about these. Any recommendations where can you find more about various APK's? Or download them ?

  • +2

I do not see an option to click and collect in ebay. Am I missing something?

  • Can't remember which model was at our AirBnB, but they UI was laggy.
How is the TCL UI on this C745? Is it better on the C845?

Looking to get a tv for the in- Laws

  • +1

Many good deals on TCL TV's lately. I always thought TCL is subpar brand. generally how it fares with big names LG/ Samsung/ Sony etc.?

is it ' you get what you pay' scenario?

    • +3

TCL is a reputable company, buy from JB and make sure they cover shipping costs for warranty.
I told them I had no confidence in their phone support, you will get none, just ask JB to step in and you're covered.

      • What do you mean shipping costs for warranty? How do you do this?
And do you mean JB warranty is better than TCL phone support?

        • OK so when I spoke to the sales person @ JB, they said they would cover the pick up and delivery of the TV if warranty was involved, not a JB warranty, ie aftermarket, but the normal one that comes with the TCL TV.
My initial issue was when I spoke to phone support, they were clueless to what I was asking, which made me question if they were even able to deal with any sort of warranty.
JB said they would look after it all.

    • +4

TCL now owns CSOT which product a large amount of the high end LCD’s for the big brands, i.e half the Samsung/Sony TV’s are really TCL’s
