Honestly, this is incredible value. If it had an OLED display, would've bought one.

    • +1

      and a Snapdragon processor!

      • +1

has a phone with snapdragon and OLED released in past 12 months ever been sub $300?

      • +1

        and a better camera!

        • +3

and my axe!…but seriously the Snapdragon/MediaTek thing only matters if you want a custom rom etc.

new dimensity CPUs are so damn fast and efficient.

          • @Mortgagetightass: Qualcomm chips are touted as having better reception. Check out Ray Shaw's reviews.

    • The G84 is the OLED version of this phone 👍

  • +2

On this listing, which one is vegan leather?

    • +3

G54 only comes in vegan leather in blue. The blue is the vegan leather (don't think there is a metallic-look blue that you could accidentally order)

    • The blue one is noted down as being vegan leather by Motorola.

      • Thanks, I bought black from MobilCiti from previous deal.

I had a 500$ giftcard attached to my eBay account which i bought at 6% off 😂

I'll try ordering Blue here and cancel tha order first thing in the morning lol

    • Vegan leather 🤣

      • +2

Vegan leather comes from vegan cows ,
        It makes perfect sense ,

        • +1

Yep, when you put it like it's clear as night 🤣

      • +1

No vegans were hassled in the process

        • Thats impossible for any process…

  • +5

Isn't vegan leather the same thing as plastic?

    • +3

      Yes.

    • +9

      premium plastic

  • +1

Nice. These phones keep getting cheaper. I'm very tempted to upgrade.

    • Upgrade? Do you mind me asking what phone you're using now? Just curious

      • +2

I'm still rocking a Moto Z2 Play bought in 2018 and I'm basically addicted to my phone. This deal's cheap phone would be an upgrade

        • You're not alone, we're all addicted to our phones.

      • +2

        Redmi 5

      • +7

I still have my Galaxy S10 from 2019. There's NOTHING wrong with it, even the battery lasts a day, and the camera still beats many modern (mid-range now) phones, actually still rivals my friend's Pixel with night shots.

Very difficult to find a cheap replacement.

        • +3

Got a galaxy S8 here too.. i only need to upgrade because eventually the netIQ and other 2fa apps will brick due to OS support dropping.. sad face no space

        • +7

Old flagships better than newer budget and mid ranges. It’s like the tech has matured and the tech companies have hit a wall in innovation years ago?

I don’t get the appeal with updating phone all the time nowadays. Even the $2000 ones hardly see a significant gain every 2nd generation now.

Really the 7 to 8 years support the new pixels will be getting is what all flagship phones should be getting. Replacing phones every two to three years is dumb. The only thing that needs to be replaced is batteries. Hope EU forcing user replaceable batteries for phone makers back to having to do that on their phones.

          • @Ronnnie: Agree

          • +2

@Ronnnie: It would be nice if the phones could last as long as their hardware and mobile network allows rather than one being forced to upgrade due to the lack of security updates or minimum Android version requirements. Mandating that boot loader unlocking be available and having some process where custom roms can still pass Play Protect would be good. It's unfair that all the open source the manufacturers paid nothing for is rendered closed by proprietary measures and secret/undocumented device specifications.

    • +3

these keep dropping iphones keep inflating

      • +5

It's a strange world we live in. I personally know of so many people that blindly drop more than a grand on the latest iphone every 2-3 years without batting an eyelid. I see the flagships retail at about $2k now. Crazy money.

        • +1

yeh - ashamed to say I am one too but in my defence I get it on sale (courtesy of OZB) and then salary sacrifice/gift cards + some other tricks
so my 14 pro 512gb ended up costing me $750~

        • +7

I know people who drop over 2K for iPhones, owns a brand new Tesla and still think twice about buying tomatoes when they are over 5$ a kilo.

        • +1

I try to keep it around $600 every 2 years. Each year goes up $50 so next phone will be $700, they're slowly conditioning us to spend more each year.
          .

        • +1

Yes upgrading every couple of years is dumb

Hugh Jefferies did a comparison between the iPhone 15 pro vs 5 and the 5 can still win in speed test.

          https://youtu.be/PuoqjKDjNT4?si=ol6lym1KRj6KRCvk

It seems Motorola strategy of not updating their phones for long is potentially a good strategy is you care about performance long term. Might not be good for app compatibility and security longterm though.

My aim is to spend less than $100 a year on phone hardware. Easily done on ozbargain deals. The pixels and the A series phones offer the best bang for buck longterm if you want a phone that is still supported with regular updates. If you don’t care about that then probably one of the midrange Motorola will give you better specs for your $ but lose out on support and cameras. Which I personally value but others may not.

        • Dude, don't look at MacBook pros then. The Mrs needs a new work one, and her boss it ready to spend $4k+ on one, no second thought. No brains, just spend.

          • @Ulysses31: If the boss is paying then let him go crazy and buy what she wants. I'm not on a high income so I can't spend that sort of money on depreciating tech. If you want/need the latest and greatest, can afford it, and have some clever tax write-off mechanism then go for it I say!

            • @Windows7forever: I've done similar before, and when things went quiet, I was in the first batch of people let go, with a "we can't afford you/your cost to the business".

Personally, the "apple tax" is disgusting, and I don't want anyone to pay it for me.

          • @Ulysses31: Compare to her salary, it is a small amount. She most likely be able to make more money for the company by using a $4000+ MacBook than using a $1500 ThinkPad.

            • @bobokingdom: There's specs, and then there's the point of diminishing returns. Going from 500GB SSD to 1TB was like another $600. WTF.

  • I have a dying oneplus 8 pro that i keep as a spare phone for secondary use. Would this G54 be a comparable replacement for it?

    • +1

It’s a good phone but there’s been previous deals for G84 with the JB Gift card which brings it around this price so I’d say that would be a better replacement for your OP8 pro.

    • Cheaper to replace the battery, if that's what's happening

      • +1

At sub 250$ you’re better off getting a new phone Tbh

  • I just sold my Motorola Edge 30 Fusion after 1 year of use. Thinking to get something newer, this isn't a bad option

    • +3

I have both… Edge 30 Fusion is much, much better phone.. totally different class

      • I had it for a year so sold it. I have put in an order for Xiaomi Redmi note 13 pro 5g model and in the mean time I got myself this G54 as a spare phone.

    • +6

Not worth it right now to get g84, it was $399 with a $100 giftcard back just a few weeks ago. I reckon it'll be on sale soon. Just don't buy it full price haha

      • +2

I have G84 and I definitely think its worth the full price of $399.
But yeah it has been much cheaper than $399 on here.
But just from the perspective of having used it for more than 1 month now - it feels like its worth double the $400 MSRP to me - at least!
The OLED screen is gorgeous and the Snapdragon 695 is just fast enough when combined with the 12GB RAM to avoid frustration.

    • +1

A few reviews I've seen have put the G54 at such good value it undermines the G84. I think GPU performance is the only metric that is compellingly in the G84's favour.

      • G84 has 256GB (compare to 128GB on G54) of storage, OLED Screen, 12GB RAM (compare to 8GB on G54). G84 also has Snapdragon which most likely will have better 5G connectivity/speed than MediaTek.

  • Poco X6 pro 12gb 512gb dimensity 8300 ultra $564 Inc gst. With coupon $30, just came out. This is a really good deal if someone wants to post it.
    I just bought it.

    • What does this provide better than this?

    • Only if it does volte/Vowifi with telstra

  • Thanks OP, was looking for a work phone and decided on this one. 😁

  • Excellent phone for the money.
Bought one for my daughter pre Christmas and she loves it

  • i got this for sub 200 before xmas from mobiciti ebay. v good value

    • Lucky. Sub $200 is an absolute steal for this phone.

  • +6

Big W also has this for $249 - I was able use gift cards I got at 5% off and the Rewards extra 10% to take it down to around $212

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/motorola-g54-5g-indigo-blue/…

    • Thanks for the tip!

    • What is the Rewards extra 10% offer you refer to here? Is that a general or targetted offer?
Looked but cannot find any details

    • Thanks for the reminder! I had forgotten about Rewards Extra after doing the free trial then cancelling.

Used $10 I had in rewards, so got the phone for $221 including the $7 for the Extra sub.

Also bought gift cards to buy it, and picked up 1200 points for that, as well as 1120 points from a Big W booster.

Milking the system as best I can, lol.

      Again, thanks for the reminder.

  • Will Officeworks or JB Hi Fi match this price?

    • Don't match price after coupon code

  • +3

Motorola phones are easily the best value Android phones.

When an Android user, my favourite features were the twist action to open camera and double chop to turn on torch.

AND they retain the headphone port, the absence of which remains my biggest grievance against device manufacturers. "Courage" pfffft more like Bluetooth headphones have higher margins and Apple had bought a headphone company (Beats) the year before…

    • +1

Bluetooth earphones are convenient but I still appreciate having the option to plug in an old pair of corded ones. Ultimately everything with a lithium battery inside it has a finite lifespan. I'll still be rocking my old corded headphones for many years after all these disposable Bluetooth ones stop working.

    • They still do the actions?! Awesome, when I replace my S20 FE Im going back to Moto

  • forgot to apply the coupon code in the order. how is mobile citi with cancelling orders?

  • +1

A question for the people who has a G54, does it have 5000mah or 6000mah?
There are discrepancy between aus retailers
    spec sheet and other sites.
    https://versus.com/en/motorola-moto-g54-5g-vs-motorola-moto-…
My pipedream phone would be a ~$500
    SD 8gen1+(TMSC)
    6 inch OLED 90Hertz
    OIS 1inch main sensor
    5000mah or more
    3 years OS update

    • +1

The pipedream phone sounds like Pixel 7 for $499. I think it matches everything there other then the Snapdragon but their processor is probably equivalent

      • Not the battery though? Pixel 7 only has 4355mah I think.

        • Yeah just closest to those specs for under $500 I could think of, don't think there's many competitors at that price

      • Agree that Pixel 7 is close, not a fan of Samsung processors and smalllish battery. The video footage on pixels also left much to be desired.
IMO if Zenfone 10 has a bigger battery and 3 years of OS support and can starts at $1000 RRP with $600 on discounts it would be the dream

    • +2

I was checking the same thing. What I noticed is that the Overseas Market such as India , comes with 12GB RAM + 256gb ROM and has 6000mah battery. The one we are getting is 8GB +128GB and has a 5000mah battery.

    • +1

I grabbed this one from a previous Ozbargain deal at Xmas. Australian retailers are stocking the Chinese version with 5000mah battery and IPS screen, which is a bummer only if you pay more that $250 for it.
I will say, I upgraded from a g7 power and 5000mah sure doesn't go as far as it used to.

  • Between this and a secondhand Samsung A33, is there any competition?

  • +2

    Getting this for work phone,
    Thanks OP

    • +1

      Same

  • can any owners comment on the battery life on 5g? I own a samsung a33 5g. it can hardly make it through the day

  • Is this much of an upgrade from a s21+?

    • +1

I would expect the camera and screen to be considerably worse. Performance might be similar depending what you do on your phone, worse I guess if you play games on your phone. Battery life to be better, new larger capacity battery with lower end specs usually means great battery life. Software support probably similar with this budget model vs old flagship. I personally view it more like a down/sidegrade depending on what you value in a phone.

  • +1

Loved my Samsungs till I tried Motorola , Samsung isn’t offering much choice these days model after model seem same big sizes. I’m using a Neo30 presently and love it so lightweight and does what I need . My previous was S21 Samsung but as I said now to large 6.7 etc, and not paying $1300 for a flagship S23 doesn’t seem big prefer S22 not sure why ? maybe the build or bezels on S22 if I ever went back to Samsung . But the Neo 30 for $299 is Amazing value. I’m not all about photos either so camera isn’t a dealbreaker.

    • +2

Is the camera really that bad on the motorola?

      • I have Motorola Edge 20 Fusion and a Google Pixel 4a.
The images that come out of the Pixel are mostly better and clearly, you can do a fair bit more with them with the built-in editing software.
But the ones I take on the Moto are pretty close in some conditions (under medium light and so on) plus the Moto has a wide-angle lens, which I think is more useful than a telephoto most of the time.

  • Does the G54 have always on display feature?

    • I would assume that it doesn't - as far as I know, the only phones which have AOD are those with OLED panels and this has an IPS.

  • How is the processor. It uses MediaTek as opposed to Snapdragon?

    • +1

From what I understand, this MediaTek (Density 7020) chip performances slightly better than the equivalent Snapdragon 695 processor.

      • Interesting. In theory, the specs of the G54 should trump the G82 because of the additional 2GB RAM. The G82 uses the Snapdragon 695 processor. I don't know much about Mediatek processors but I always thought Snapdragon were superior and had bettery battery optimisation. If you can get this phone via local stock with warranty for $200 it would be the perfect deal.

  • Any recommendations for a screen protector? Taa

  • Thanks OP, bought two (actually). Ended up using code TOP6JAN or something as this post's code only applies once, got two for just over $466.

    • Just checking back in to say I've set these up for my kids now and they're way better than they deserve :-D Framerates are decent in the kinds of games they play too, Minecraft etc. Amazing value at this price. Not that we use it, but there's a fingerprint sensor in the power button too. Only thing I could think of that is missing is wireless charging, but we don't need that.
