20% off AppleCare+ for Eligible Macs/iPads Purchased via Back to Uni Higher Education Offer @ Apple Stores/Education Online

180

for standard/non-discounted two/three-year pricing, check here - credit/thanks to @Kanjus :)

This promotional Apple Education Pricing on AppleCare+ is available for eligible products only when the eligible product and AppleCare+ are purchased directly from an Apple Store or the online Apple Store for Education during the promotional period only and cannot be combined with non-promotional Apple Education Pricing. AppleCare+ attached to eligible products purchased outside of the promotional period is not eligible for this promotional rate.

In Australia, AppleCare+ cannot be purchased at the same time as Apple products, and each Apple product comes with 7-Day Complimentary AppleCare+ coverage. At the expiry of the complimentary AppleCare+ coverage and within 60 days of the eligible product purchase date, AppleCare+ can be purchased at the rate that is available at that time.

To accommodate Australia’s deferred sales rules, the promotional Apple Education Pricing for AppleCare+ will be available for eligible products purchased during the promotional period for 10 days after the promotional period ends, subject to the normal AppleCare+ eligibility rules. AppleCare+ is only available: (i) in an Apple Store for 60 days following eligible product purchase; and (ii) on the Apple Store for Education for 30 days following eligible product purchase.

This promotional AppleCare+ Education Pricing is applicable only to two-year paid upfront AppleCare+ for iPad and three-year paid upfront AppleCare+ for Mac and is not applicable to any recurring payment AppleCare+ plans.

AppleCare+ attached to eligible products purchased outside of the promotional period is not eligible for this promotional rate.

note that this is not necessarily true/enforced - i have purchased MacBooks during Black Friday sales via AOC, and then received 20% off AppleCare+ at an Apple Store the following January :)

  • Hey op, I bought a Mac during Black Friday. Will I be able to access this offer if I visit a shop at the beginning of February (I am currently overseas). Thanks

    • +1

AppleCare+ can be purchased only within 60 days following when you purchased the Mac

      • Should be ok then as my laptop arrived on 6th December and 60 days should be on 5th February.

        • +1

I may be wrong but I think it begins from when it gets shipped (i.e. the invoice date). Give it a go though, they may be able to override it

          • @bananafishsalad: +1

from my experience, Complimentary AppleCare+ coverage commences the day after dispatch, and is actually for 14 days, not 7, to allow for delivery time

            • @tonester: I'd certainly hope so but my Mac (CTO MBA M2) was 7 days. I clearly remembered that because I had to wait the period out to purchase proper AC+.

              • @xmagic: one will have 7 days of Complimentary AppleCare+ from the expected delivery date, but it actually starts when dispatched on the invoice date, so devices are covered whilst in transit

                • @tonester: Went in store and no problems. MacBook Air 15 is $299 for 3 years

Pricing for applecare. I assume without discount.
    So Mba m2 13 = $330. => $263
    15= $380 =>$304

    • Thanks for sharing the link, Apple doesn't make it easy to find it.

    • thanks - deal updated :)

    • I just purchased the 20% off Applecare for an MBA m2 13 at the Apple Store for $259. I was able to use the $240 Apple Gift received from the purchase of the MBA m2 13. No student ID was asked for to purchase Applecare with the 20% discount.

I had talked with Applecare customer service on the phone and they said $299 was the discounted Applecare price and I could not use the gift card when purchasing over the phone or if they sent me an invoice link.

  • So I have to buy the apple care+ in store? Do I need to bring any ID to prove as an Uni student to buy it?

    • purchased directly from an Apple Store or the online Apple Store for Education

    • It’s available online???

  • Anyone know if you can use the gift card given with item to purchase apple care+ if taking up offer online?

    • -1

      Can't

    • +1

you can buy AppleCare+ in-store with gift card :)

      • And have to keep it in physical form instead of topping it up. Also need to purchase the one-off plans instead of subscriptions as anything AC+ online accepts credit card only.

        • And have to keep it in physical form instead of topping it up.

if one orders online, then a digital gift card will be sent/received :)

Also need to purchase the one-off plans instead of subscriptions as anything AC+ online accepts credit card only.

This promotional AppleCare+ Education Pricing is applicable only to two-year paid upfront AppleCare+ for iPad and three-year paid upfront AppleCare+ for Mac and is not applicable to any recurring payment AppleCare+ plans.

          • @tonester:

if one orders online, then a digital gift card will be sent/received

It’s irrelevant whether the gift card is in digital card form. If they accept physical gift cards then they will also accept digital ones no problem.

It’s when you have loaded the gift cards to your Apple ID balance that you will have issues buying Apple Care in store and online.

      • Do they even ask for student ID when buying AppleCare+ in store? If they do then I’ll ask someone for their student ID before I rock up just in case!

  • What is difference between applecare and the standard warranty you get? How long is standard warranty with apple macbooks?

    • +2

Standard warranty doesn't cover accidental damage

        credit/thanks to @Pobman - https://www.apple.com/environment/answers/, section 3.2:

For the purposes of our assessment, years of use, which are based on first owners, are modeled to be four years for macOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS devices. Most Apple products last longer and are often passed along, resold, or returned to Apple by the first owner for others to use.

  • Sorry if this is the wrong place. Which MacBook would you advise I buy my daughter in year 9?

    Thank you in advance.

    • Air should be good enough but can be pro If you want future prove. My son's MacBook pro 14 2018 just broke last month. Performance was still ok last year.

      • You sure the broken one was MacBook Pro 14? The 14 inch MacBook Pro only came out at the end of 2021.

        • Yeah, you are right. Should be pro 13 with Intel chipset.

    • 13” MacBook Air - before the bonus $240 gift card and any cashback or discount gift card usage, base models with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD:

      • M1 $1349
      • M2 $1649

however, whilst M2 chip is faster than M1, the 256GB SSD in the M2 MBA is slower than the M1’s, due to a different configuration

16GB RAM is recommended over the base 8GB - extra $270, making the M1 $1619 - it helps with future-proofing, as less memory can be more of a limitation/bottle-neck than a slower processor, and cannot be added/increased later

depending upon software being used, the M2’s higher speed might not be significantly noticeable

upgrading from 256GB SSD to 512GB costs $300, so an M2 16GB RAM 512GB SSD would be $2219

i bought M1 16GB RAM for my kids last year when they started year 7 & 11

  • AppleCare+ is finally showing up for my new MBP. It is showing $649 for three year, that is standard pricing isn’t it? Does that mean I need to go in store and get the 20% discount?

    • That’s right.

      • Did you get your AppleCare+ for your Mac yet? Did they ask for student ID in store?

    • yes; no, only if you want to pay with gift card

AppleCare+ is only available: (i) in an Apple Store for 60 days following eligible product purchase; and (ii) on the Apple Store for Education for 30 days following eligible product purchase.

alternatively, if the education discount doesn't appear online, then contact/call them

      • You didn’t read my question carefully. It does appear online but only showing full price.

It is showing $649 for three year, that is standard pricing isn’t it?

        • was that the education store?

maybe you didn't read my answer carefully:

if the education discount doesn't appear online, then contact/call them

          • @tonester: I’m going to contact them because it’s not showing the right discount. Think I will hit the store because I want to use the bonus gift card on AppleCare.

            • @FrugalNotStingy: I contacted support via phone. They can only see $579 for education discount. So I went to the store, they gave me 509 without question or ID.

              • @vihand: Did you just go in store and tell them you bought a Mac via the education store and should qualify for the 20% AppleCare+? Did you also need to bring the Mac in and let them do a diagnostic test?

                • @FrugalNotStingy: Yes and yes.

                • @FrugalNotStingy: Was your computer still within the 30 days from purchase or had it gone past that? I was advised in an Apple Store and online via Apple Support that within 30 days Applecare+ could be purchased from my device (yes it is available for purchase for $649) or by calling Apple and they will apply the 20% education discount. When calling Apple today they also said the maximum they can do over the phone is 10% which is their normal education discount, not this current promo.

Their fine print online at https://www.apple.com/au-hed/store also says 'This promotional Apple Education Pricing on AppleCare+ is available for eligible products only when the eligible product and AppleCare+ are purchased directly from an Apple Store OR THE ONLINE APPLE STORE FOR EDUCATION (caps mine) during the promotional period only and cannot be combined with non-promotional Apple Education Pricing. AppleCare+ attached to eligible products purchased outside of the promotional period is not eligible for this promotional rate.' Very clear that this current 20% promo should be available from the online Apple Store for Education or by calling the online store for Education as they do have a number.

                  Disappointing….

                  • +1

@letslightafire: Same thing happened to me, I just went to Apple Store to buy it in person without any issue. No ID check either.

                  • @letslightafire: I just called Apple Support today, purchased MBA in Jan and I wanted to purchase AppleCare. Online original price is $329, talking with the online staff, it came down to $299.. That's so strange because they said $329 * 0.8 = $263, the price not include GST yet, and after GST it comes to $299… I got no idea how they come up with this number.

                    • +1

@codinghelloworld: No the $329 should be including GST. If you add 10% to $299 you get $329. That would be the GST component. But taking 10% off $329 would bring it to $296 inc gst…

Something doesnt match up - what have you decided to do?

                      • @letslightafire: No decision yet. As last week, I came in person in Apple Castle Hills, they asked me to show student ID. I think some of the stores/staff now ask in person if you walk in store now.

I probably try to call Apple Support again to clarify about the numbers.

                        • @codinghelloworld:

they asked me to show student ID

That’s not good because we need to take the MacBook in store for them to run the diagnostic test. Lugging the uninsured MacBook to a busy shopping centre and have Apple not honouring the AppleCare+ 20% discount is quite risky.

                  • @letslightafire: Yes, it was within 30 days from purchase (It was around 12 days) and it’s now still within the 30 days.
I’ve been too busy to go to an Apple Store to buy the AppleCare+ but I will probably do it this week. I won’t bother calling Apple because people (and you) in this thread reported back that Apple couldn’t do the 20% discount over the phone.

              • @vihand: Can I ask which store you went to?

                • +1

@codinghelloworld: Hornsby one. You could mention you tried to call Apple support and they can't do 20% off online so they directed you to store.

                  • @vihand: Been to Hornsby today, they said I need a student ID. Much disappointed. :(

                    • @codinghelloworld: Honestly, I don’t get why the Apple Store staff insist on customers presenting a student ID before getting the EDU AppleCare even if it’s because of the 20% off. They should be welcoming people wanting to buy AppleCare with open arms because it is lucrative and a ‘product’ with possibly the biggest profit margin. Even with the 20% discount, it is still not cheap.

                      • @FrugalNotStingy: I was in Castle hills last week and Hornsby today, first I approached a staff, then (not sure if they see me Asian appearance) they said someone will come to help me. In few mins an Asian staff (in both stores) came by and said I need an ID to purchase, need to be an student ID (not high school ID - the laptop is for my high school son). I'm not sure why I did not get welcome by the first staff or person I spoke to. The person who talked to me today is young Asian lady, told me that because this year the discount is huge, so they will check every person who want to purchase AppleCare+ (not sure if she is telling the truth - lol) Anyway, I will go with $299 online offer a few days ago.

                    • @codinghelloworld: That’s too bad :( Maybe you look too young to have a Uni kid? Or they just changed the policy?

                      • @vihand: haha probably I look young, but I'm late 30s now. I would love to hear other experience when walking in to purchase AppleCare, to me it feels weird and disappointed when going through these, not welcome by the first staff, second staff rejected and asked for ID.

                        • @codinghelloworld: Well, I think that might be some training or policy thing. I had the same thing—the 1st staff asked me what I want then handed over to the 2nd staff. But the 2nd staff didn't ask the student ID.

                        • @codinghelloworld: Maybe you should have told them you wanted to buy AppleCare for the MacBook that you bought for uni for yourself instead if you look young. They might not have asked you for ID!

Bought an Apple MacBook Air M2 13” (CTO order) on the education promotion (online), middle of Feb, shipped end Feb.
Initial 7 day AppleCare+ expired on 6 March. Couldn’t find a way to buy online with the correct 20% discount (was $299 online).
Went to the Apple Store in Adelaide on 7 March, the retail assistant said I could have called the number and done it via phone.
But anyway, she assisted with the purchase. She did ask for a student ID (my daughter was with me, so all good).
Couldn’t pay with the Apple Balance. She did say a physical card would be ok.
Paid via credit card, price paid was $229 which is lower than the 20%
    I’m not complaining :-)

    • Wait how did they come up with the $229 number lol

      • +1

        No idea… I thought I would at least be paying $239.20 ($299 less 20%)
She rang it up at $229 for me… I just quickly paid lol

        • haha yeah, can't complain. I need to get applecare+ on mine. Thought I would call them to get the discount applied. Now I'm tempted to go in-store.

          • +1

@GJT: Yeah, if the store ain't too far. May be worth a try.

On another note, I actually got Apple to refund me $360 as the new Macbook Air M3 had launched and the price of the M2 had dropped.
Luckily I was still within the 14 days Apple price protection and quickly called them after checking the price difference.
Was tempted to return the M2 and get the M3 but decided to stay with the M2 and get the lower price (with the refund).
Daughter wasn't going to do coding or anything.

            • @syngen: Good to hear they honoured you the new price. Saves them a return and saves you time :)

  • Is apple care+ really worthed? Especially if you are a careful person that won’t accidentally drop the macbook air?

  • For anyone who has to make the purchase after the promo end date, below is my experience.

So mine expired yesterday. I tried buying AppleCare+ directly through my device, and it showed the non-discounted $449 price. I called Apple, and they were only able to give me the normal student discount over the phone, which makes it $399. I explained how I made the purchase during the promo period and also went on to explain how, because of the deferred sales rules in AUS, I couldn't purchase AppleCare+ straight away. The rep was from the USA, so he set me up with a callback from a supposedly AUS AppleCare+ rep. The rep called me back at the scheduled time but was clueless as well about the 20% off promo. I was told the best course of action would be to return to the Apple store so I could make the purchase at the discounted price.

I went into the store today and said I was here to make the AppleCare+ purchase. The person who assisted me told me that since the promo period is over, I could only make the purchase now at $399. Since I had a screenshot of the promo page, I showed her the deal terms and conditions which specifically list "To accommodate Australia’s deferred sales rules, the promotional Apple Education Pricing for AppleCare+ will be available for eligible products purchased during the promotional period for 10 days after the promotional period ends." She also saw my point of view and then went on to get in touch with her manager. Later on, she came back and informed me that since she can't edit the price from the system, they will bill me for $399 (Normal student discounted price) but put that I paid by $40 cash and the rest on my own payment method. This way, they were able to match the discounted price for me.

Overall, it's a long and lengthy process. If you have your student card and think it's worth the extra $40 hassle, go in-store to get your discount. Otherwise, ring them up, and you can get the $399 student discounted AppleCare+.
